This is a wonderful breakthrough for we who have thin hair or even hairless. I hope that this will be affordable when it is approved and marketed.
Think about how many men and women who have great talents may not have been chosen for the career they would have liked because of hairloss.
How many balding women are in Beauty Pagents or chosen as models for clothing or makeup, or a PR person to represent many beauty products?
If I would have had thick hair I would not have wore so many hats. I would have went swimming more, rode on a motorcyle with a friend or went boating without wearing a hat. Heaven forbid if I do not have my hairspray!!

This research sounds encouraging. Many, including myself, when asked will say they are not bothered by their hairloss - mainley because there is no cure and we have no choice but to accept it. However, if a cure was discovered, I'm sure that those that are currently content with their hairloss will be lining up in droves for their dosage. At the age of 53 I was diagnosed with Alopecia, but no one can tell me why this happened. I have had numerous test, the obvious would be autoimmune, but test show that isn't the problem. As of January 27, 2008, it has been one year! I haven't given up, I have an appointment Feb 20th with an Alopecia Specialist in San Fran, CA, as there are none in Atlanta. I do have new hair growth, if you can call it that, it is very fine with no pigment. I would be very interested in signing up for the study, if it would work for alopecia.

My son lost his hair when he was 6 years old. He was diagnosed with Alopecia Arenta. We tried several treatment such as steroid injection into his head to topical creams, with no success. He is now 17, and just yesterday we went to University of Miami Dermatology Dept.to one of the experts for Alopecia to see if there were any new treatments. As far as avaiable to the general public there is no cure. It is a shame that the goverment considers this issue a cosmetic not medical codition. Which means the funding is not offered and ins does not always cover the treatments. My son is a wonderful young man who has always said even at 6, "mom it is just hair, it is not who I am." I would not ever want to jeopardise my sons health with a treatment that may have risk greater then hairloss but I would like to know how to contact the Doctor to get more information and to see what maybe possible. I've been balding rapidly since age 22, now 27, it's affected everything in my life, it's destroyed my confidence, i won't go out in public unless i've got on a baseball cap or kangol for formal occasions. it makes me feel and look much older.

Hi, I was so thankful to hear this story on the Today show. Our daughter had a malignant brain tumor removed when she was 11. That was 1996, and today she is doing very well. However, the radiation treatment, kept her hair from growing back. She has dealt with the eye sight loss, not being able to drive, etc., but she really misses having her own hair. This would be encouraging. Hopefully there will be a sucessful trial. WOMEN>>> If you have benn suffering with hair thinning/shedding, hopefully you have gone thru testing to see if you have a medical condition. Firstly, thyroid (hypo or hyper) problems are common causes of hair loss and shedding. Get your iron tested as well, even if you are a "12" (which is a low normal), you still may see hair thinning as a result. Talk to a specialist, do research yourself, ask all the questions. Sometimes it is NOT genetics that are causing your problems.
Let's cross our fingers that this new study is a cure for any and all alopecia sufferers.

The doctors say it could be alopecia but are not sure. My hair grew well while I was pregnant. I have had thinning of hair and was diagnosed with alopecia, I used all of the topical drugs given to me by my Dermatologist it didn't work. Propecia, was stopping any hair to fall out, but then it stopped working so I thought. I had hair transplants that took, but i could you thousands of dollars worth of additional transplants. I hope this really works and hope it's allowed to be sold on the market...and that the price won't be prohibitive....Please keep me informed. This sounds great, but before we count our hairs before they grow, there may be one flaw in this theory. The hair grew back in mice because the follicles were damaged. In male pattern baldness, healthy follicles die in the first place because of a flaw in the blood supply to the follicles. So I am afraid if you grow new follicles in the scalp, they will be doomed to die again because of the genetics going on in the scalp itself.
As someone who is follicley challenged, I hope my theory is incorrect. I would like to hear what they experts think about this.

They can always shave if they REALLY wanted to be bald!! At least we would all have a choice in the matter. And yes I believe the world would be a better place for it! I have soo many freinds that actually tought about suicide at one point in their lives due baldness(including myself) so it's no laughing matter!!
