At 6:56 a.m. ET, just four minutes before we went on the air, TODAY producer Matt Carluccio called the control room to let us know that Ann and the crew had successfully landed at the South Pole. She purposely stays in the background and makes all those around her look good. She doesn't push her own accomplishments in peoples' faces, yet, she has many. She's well-educated and knowledgeable in things of the world; lives a simple, but outstanding and admirable lifestyle; has a sense of humor; is gracious; and would be a wonderful ambassador for this nation that all would accept. RUN FOR PRESIDENT, ANN! I remember well when I got off the plane in late 1956.

I am Patrick D. “Rediron” McCormick a Antarctic veteran of Deep Freeze I and II and member of USN Mobile Construction Battalion Special (Seabees), the all volunteer battalion that began construction at McMurdo Station in December 1955. I wintered at McMurdo with ninety-two others in 1956 and was a member of the twenty-four man construction team that began construction of the first South Pole Station in late November 1956 where only seventeen men had ever been before we arrived. Beginning on November 20, 1956 we built six prefabricated buildings with tunnels connecting them before leaving on Jan. 4, 1957.

I am in awe of what has happened since our humble beginnings of living in tents to the new super modern elevated station. Savor your time there and take lots of pictures because once you go to the Ice it gets into your blood and never seems to release you.

My best regards,

Redion

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Our family has been watching these segments with interest since my son, Andrew Hughes, and nephew, Brian Kennedy are at the South Pole right now. They're both plumbers and mention should be made of all the service people who brave these extreme conditions so that the researchers can do their jobs....after all, the scientists have to eat, sleep, keep warm, etc.

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Only a true Oregonian would make it to the South Pole!!! Congratulations Ann and the Today show team!!!!

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Congratulations Ann! You are an inspiration to me. You have such integrity and zest for life that I strive for. I admire your willingness to try new ventures.
Safe travels back to NY!
Carrie

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

I think it was quite rediculous that NBC spent all that time and CARBON fuel to put on that show "Ends of the Earth". I have been watching intently the series because I find it fascinating, but also because my daughter Roseann Meyer is working at the South Pole with the support crew at the airstrip. This is her second "summer trip" there and loves it and all the hearty souls she works with. They are a special group on an adventure of a lifetime.
In response to Bob Faenger's comments about the series being a wasteful farce, I have to disagree. I would only hope that people watching will be inspired to act in a more responsible way after seeing first hand what we could lose. How many years did Al Gore preach the truth before anyone listened. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Thanks for seeing this through the end, Ann.

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Being a former "ice person", 1996 - 2004, I enjoyed the segments from Antarctica. It made me a little homesick. It was great seing some of my friends in the background shots. Although you were able to show only a very small part of what goes on on the ice, my thanks to NBC and their Antarctic crew for bringing it to the viewers.

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

WHOO-HOO! I hadn't really liked all the touting of being green, but I do say that people need to have awareness of what goes on in the world around them. This is first and foremost the lord's creation, and each one of us must do our part. Ann, you remind me of myown courage. Though I have not been to the South Pole ( and probably never will go), I had a time on a pioneer trek that we took in honor of our ancestors where I could have gone ahead to the destination to get my medicine, but I decided to go the rest of the way, whichthe whole trip was 16 miles, something I, like you with the South Pole, have never done before. Thank you, Ann. You have inspired some people to try it themselves. Please be safe, and I along with some in this comment bracket will pray for your safe return. Please pass this on to your any in your family, so that they will have it for generations to come.

Daniel Cowan

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

This has been a fantastic and enlightening segment. Ann rocks no doubt about it. I want to thank her very patient family for giving her up so often so that we can learn and enjoy all that Ann and the technical team and everyone else behind the scenes can bring to us.

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

CONGRATULATIONS ANN, MATT AND AL:
WHAT YOU DID WAS GREAT AND 99% OF US LOVED IT! Being the great great nephew of Roald Amundsen, I always had a great appreciation for his numerous historic accomplishments and his perseverance to reach the pole first. After watching you at the pole and your description of its adverse conditions, I now have a much deeper appreciation for what my uncle accomplished during an era before our present modern technology. Sailing to Antartica on a wooden ship and utilizing dog sleds to reach the pole, it is inconceivable how he survived those conditions you described. Brought me to tears when I heard you reached the Pole! I hope you are doing well. You are bringing information to much of the world that would never have it, and by doing that are helping to save our planet! Your travel’s and stories have made me feel in touch with more than just the greening of our planet—my son, Clay Johnson, is now working his third year at the South Pole Station as a construction supervisor. As you know, that’s some extreme construction! We, of course, miss Clay terribly when he’s gone, but are very proud of him and the work he is doing. Every position/job down there is so important! This will be (if not already) the most advanced research facility on the planet! It takes many, many tough and dedicated people to make it happen. Ann—THANK YOU! Not only for making me feel closer to Clay when he’s gone, but for the awareness you are giving the world! You are astounding!

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Today,

CONGRATS..What a wonderful accomplishment!! Unfortunate for the human race.

2) Did you thank each and every one of us who took the time to read each post only to be brought down by your negativism? I think we deserve some gratitude as well. Oh wait. I guess we won't get it because I am sure you are too busy feeling good about your comments.

Now on to this. I have a good friend who has been trekking to McMurdo for the last 3 or 4 years. And I've heard stories, seen pics of the mammoth planes that carry her there, heard a bit of the potpourri of personalities, PhDs, artists, that come to inhabit the place, but seeing it on TV was quite something else.

Ann, lucky you. I know it must have been quite the adventure, and..a bit iffy (?) at times, but I was delighted to tune in to watch these segments. I can't imagine you captured all the personalities and the 'life' at McMurdo, and surrounding areas, but it certainly helped me flesh out, even more, my friends tales of life there. Despite the hardships/uncertainties, I hope you enjoyed the experience. And thanks for bringing a bit of clarity and color to my friend's tales! Though hm...she never told me about that bowling alley, or the three bars.. Just the rugby games in the snow!

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Hi Ann-
Just heard that my daughter Kelly Jacques was on the flight from McMurdo to the South Pole with you! WE have watched every minute of coverage this week, and hoping that NBC will highlight the incredible work going on there. Kelly is part of the support crew monitoring the drinking water - first trip to Antarctica, a civil engineer from Montana State (and home in Wisconsin!) Thanks so much for showing us her new workplace!

Ann Made it to the South Pole!

Ann! The last 4 seasons were as the Fixed Wing Supervisor. I was civilian working closely with the 109th Air National Guard and Kenn Borek Air, I cannot find enough words to describe their dedication and professionalism. It was truly an honor to work with the Air Ops folks. It would be nice to see the Today Show do another segment about Antarctica focusing on the men and women who make up the community. I miss the "ICE" and the wonderful people. I got very nostalgic watching this series. Thank you for reminding me of what a spectacular and beautiful place the "ICE" is.
