My late husband was the glaciologist with the first Wintering Over Party 1957-58 at the South Pole Station. He donated his film to National Geographic. The expedition was featured in the National Geographic edition of April 1958. There aren't many left of the original 18 men that spent the first winter. Incidentally I met my husband in Christchurch on his way down to the Antarctic, but that's another story.

Ann Curry on her way to the South Pole

Ann, you are such an adventurer! They drill a hole 1 1/2 miles deep, with hot water, then they drop a probe into the hole which then freezes over. When nutrinos pass thru the ice (smaller than atoms) they make a blue flash which the probe picks up and they can map where in the universe it came from. My friend Dennis Duling is there , he also left Monday for the Ice. My husband will be leaving CHC Friday and will be on the ice Sat.or Sun. I would have like to see you going somewhere other than pole station. Which by the way has been rebuilt many times. I first went to antarctica in 1955 with Operation Deep freeze 1. I helped construct the original Mcmurdo station and little America 5. At that time we slept in tents on the ice.I was lucky enough to visit scotts hut, believe me it was very interesting. This was not as glamorus as it may sound. I returned again on Deep Freeze 2. This the original Mcmurdo station was operational and we were well on our way to do our best to change the face of a very pristine place. I went back again during Operation Deep Freeze 64. I wintered over that year at Hallet Station which was in the middle of a penguin rookery. The station was shared by the U.S. and New Zealand. It was a most interesting Year. I won't go into details now, but I do have a lot of interesting stories about that Year. By the way it was the last year that Hallet was used as a wintering over station. I understand that it was used for a while as a summer station. I still have close to one thousand slides that I took and developed during my winter at Hallet Station. It woild be nice if you could visit so of the other stations. Also Little America five no longer exists. Have a safe trip hope to view your trip when it airs.

Ann Curry on her way to the South Pole

Ann,
Guess that light jacket, cotton skirt and open-toed heels aren't going to work this time? My uncle, Ens. Maxwell Lopez is one of them. We know exactly where they are, how to reach them, and have an experienced team gathered, the cost reasonable. Why is now not the time to recover them? This is the question we have asked of the Navy and await Secretary Winter's response.
Please, talk about these courageous explorers and the resolve of the family members to see the George One/Operation Highjump Crew Recovery succeed, you will honor these men.

Ann Curry on her way to the South Pole

Greetings from Idaho, Ann!

I am truly looking forward to your stories from McMurdo Station. My son, Danny Uhlmann, age 24, is stationed there this Antarctica summer as a Field Safety Trainer. He has created an online journal including wonderful photos of his ongoing extraordinary experience.
