It would seem that the reason they wore those things in the first place was becuase it was appropriate for the era in which they lived. So, if this gentleman kept all of the commandments, did he follow ALL of the commandments, such as to "remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"? The Sabbath day as ordained and given in creation was and STILL IS Saturday. Constantine changed the day to Sunday in order to fulfill his ideal worship to the Sun-god Ra ... we all need to obey the commandments and keep the Sabbath holy!

Did AJ participate in ANY of the ordained FEASTS of the LORD? The pagan holidays such as Christmas and Easter are all tied bag to pagan sun god worship, or to mythical greek gods.

I think it's wonderful that instead of decrying what's wrong with the world, AJ set a positive tone. I agree with the respondent who stated that when Jesus came he came to rewrite the mores and beliefs of Old Testament which has its moments that one would not take literally but still the majority of churches still follow. Christianity is the New Testament and we were even given an ideal in the form of Christ to follow and this ideal said emphatically, "love one another as I have loved you."

Anything made more difficult than that command has run off course. So, a challenge to all of us - "just do it!" And then you'll find how challenging it really is to be called Christian.

I think following the old testament is needed to follow the new testament. I have studied many religions so that I would know the truth; but they all choose what they will adhere to or not. I believe if you hunger and thirst, God will give you food and water. I would like to know how you plan to live now and what you will teach your children. Life is challenging and living by God's rules more challenging. I decided to live by the basic laws of all the religions and being a native American, I cause no harm, leave the world in it's natural state, treat people with love and compassion, offer a helping hand when the opportunity presents itself, ask to be forgiven each day and in turn forgive every person every day, I am faithful to my husband of 26 years and have been since we married, I actually love every single person in the world, although I do not love their actions and choices. I hope your experience included a trip to Jerusalem, I pray I will get to go before I die, because you could not literally live the Bible without walking in the sand and heat and seeing a man tending his flock of sheep day after day. There is a lot to be said for people of this era that can actually bear the boredom, ridicule, and discipline required to follow the rules of God. The bible was written thousands of years ago. at the time there world only consisted of what they saw. People still beleaved the world was flat for a thousand or so years later. God knew what the world was for he made it. I guess the bible was written for the people in just a small area for the people that they knew then. A. J. Jacobs states that he lived "by the Bible" for a whole year emphasizing the Ten Commandments. Yet, on your website, (I haven't read the book) nothing is said about all of the sacrifices and atonements that were commanded in the Old Testament. And what about the pilgrimages to Jerusalem to the temple, etc?

And where in the Bible does it say that they wore white robes all the time? Living under the Old Testament or old law was a very difficult task. But, we are not to live under that law today, thankfully, because Jesus Christ nailed it to the cross when he died and now we have a much better law, one that can save us eternally, which the old law could not.

As is stated in several of the other coments, he needs to look further. Also, the New Testament teaches that the Pharisees stood and prayed publicly very eloquent prayers to get attention. Christ teaches that if we are Christians, we don't have to tell the world, for the world will know by the way we conduct our lives.

This morning on an early morning talk show an author was interviewed about a book he had written. The title, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble (humble?) Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, caught my attention. I did watch the interview. The author, AJ Jacobs, decided to write a book of a true life experience. He consciously created the true life experience knowing he would write about it. He seemed like a nice enough guy, smiling, laughing. But what was he smiling and laughing about? God, the Bible? Yes. Blasphemy? Possibly I suppose.

He grew a beard wore sandals and a white ("In the Bible, there's a line in Ecclesiastes that says, "Let your garments always be white." So I tried to follow that literally.") robe for a year. He changed his diet, his appearance, his lifestyle and to some degree even his way of thinking about the Bible and Christianity. He purposely made a spectacle of himself in public to get various people's reactions. He played instruments of Biblical times twice a day literally(in public). (Psalm 147:7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God upon the lyre!) He even at one time stoned an adulterer "literally" he said. It seems a man approached him in a park and inquired as to what he was doing. The author explained that he was attempting to follow the Bible literally. The man admitted to the aspiring author that he was an adulterer. The adulterer asked what are you going to do stone me? He threw pebbles at him.

When asked what was the main thing he learned from this experience, he said, he had a rude awakening. He was surprised at how much he sinned on a daily basis. He said no matter how hard he tried to be a good person and follow every rule in the Bible, even the Levitical laws such as not wearing clothing of mixed fibers, he always messed up pretty regular. Jacobs was astounded how much he sinned. When asked what "rules" he broke the most, he said, lying, gossiping, and coveting. He even admitted he had probably sinned during the interview.

The Truth that Jacobs took away from this year of trying to live it literally was this, he said, "If you take the Bible, too literally, you will miss out on the beauty." He said he continues to honor the Sabbath day as a day or rest because he needs the rest. He said, "Whether or not there is a God, we should be reverent of holy things." He ended the interview by saying that he learned it is important to be thankful for hundreds of little things everyday that we take for granted.

I guess if I could interview him I would want to ask who is it that he is thankful to if not God. I would ask him if he had figured out that none are good, no not one, even someone attempting to live the Bible literally, does he not then realize that he literally needs a Savior.

Mr. Jacobs said his major purpose for this project was a young son. He said when his son asked about religion he wanted to know what he should tell him.

Today's devotional ends with this prayer request. Please pray A J Jacobs will come to a literal saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and can teach his son the beauty of our Savior who loves us so much that He came and literally died on a cross to save us all, AJ Jacobs included.

Firstly, if I may...
Those who feel this is an opportunity to extol Jesus, ok well, it's not. I am a Christian, but this story isn't about being saved, it's about triumph and dedication in God's name and one mans mission to try to accomplish that.

Lastly, Thank you for doing this. I think, for myself, I will give this a "go", but in a more modern sense (as suggested by others here). Not ancient garb, but all white, modern (albeit humble) clothing.
Being an actor, this won't be easy as most of the time, wardrobe does not permit white as a color to be wear on set... but I will try as to my best ability. And in the end, I hope, and pray, to see what you're experiencing.

As a messianic Jew who knows, accepts and follows Yeshua as my King, I have to reply to the people who say they are belivers and yet want to abolish the Tanakh, or "Old Testament". Where exactly did Yeshua say it was done away with? Certainly not in Matthew 5 when he says "I have not come to do away with the Torah (Law) but to fullfill it"
As in the sacrificial and priestly system. And thats not even done away with per say, in a physical sense yes, but not spiritually. If you believe HIS blood covers you, then the Levitical sacrifice system is still in effect! Also, the only sins that demanded death in Torah were the willful, defiant sins. The others, accidental and such where what the sacrifices were for!
I might add one other thought.....the Biblical (not Jewish) feast days are for us, through all generations, permanent, thats what God's word says, now do you think HE was in error and changed his mind? Or are human beings in error? The feast days are when he not only has promnised to be here powerfully among us, but also a rehearsal for things to come. They are prophetic. Passover (Pesach)- Exodus form Egypt / Yeshua on the cross and His resurrection, Pentacaust(Shavuot)- Torah given at Mt Sinai / gift of the Holy Spirit, Rosh Hashanna - His return Yom Kippur - The day of judgemnt Tabernacles (Sukkot) Yeshua's birth / The wedding feast

Sadly he got so much wrong. There are no commands to eat crickets or locusts (just that they are kosher/fit to eat), there are no commands not to cut hair (except for certain tribes of Israel), and the only day our garments are commanded to be literally white is on Yom Kippur (otherwise they are to be AS white as wool; i.e. - we are to be clean from sin). Every command in the Old testament was affirmed and followed by Yeshua (Jesus).

His attempt may have been to follow the Torah (G-d's eternal and unchanging law), but all he succeeded in doing was living as closely as possible to how people lived in biblical times. I pray that his experience will encourage him and others to search the Scriptures, walk in Torah, and follow Yeshua.

"Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud ( ) or a stroke will pass from the Torah not until everything that must happen has happened. This guy was obviously just starved for attention and out to hoodwink a bunch of unsuspecting consumers into buying his book. To literally follow the Bible (the Old Testament), one of his first responsibilities would be to exterminate all the pagans in Canaan. Did he do this? No, because he was just trying to get some attention. Did he tear down idols and destroy other religious "temples?" No, he would have been arrested. He was probably home on the weekends playing PS2 or Xbox and only dressed up in his get-up when he went out on the town.

Someone else mentioned that when his wife stopped kissing him, did he try to get a handmaiden? Concubinage was the practice of the day in the Bible, why did he ignore these seemingly less tasteful, but still literal, parts? And did he dash any babies' heads on rocks (Psalm 137:9)? Nope. This guy didn't try very hard to be literal.

This man may have meant well but he seemed to be more interested in being extreme than in being accurate. EG. failing to read carefully in order to determine what is a metaphore versus what is a command.
Being as the man said he was trying to follow the "BIBLE" not just the Torah, he would have recognized that the Jesus had fullfilled the ceremonial laws for us, and being as he was not living in the Theocratic state of Israel (for it doesn't exist anymore) the civil law does not apply to him anymore either, leaving only the moral law.

The study of the moral law should have made him realize that he was guilty of being a lawbreaker and was under the wrath of God. The law says not to lie, steal, take God's name in vain, dishonor his parents, looking with lust makes him an adulterer at heart, calling someone an idiot (or worse)or flipping them off in traffic makes him a murderer at heart (according to the Bible) all of which he, you and I are abundantly guilty of. This should have made him flee to Jesus (in repentance and faith) who experienced the wrath God on our behalf when He died on the cross.

If he genuinly was trying to follow the Bible this is where it would have led him, not to wearing white robes and eating crickets.

The question I have to ask is what Bible was he following? What is his religious background? If he is of the Jewish faith, then he is following the Bible that he knows, trusts and believes.

If he is a Christian, then I agree that living the Old Testament, as Christians call it, was a good walk of faith, but now he should try to live the New Testament.

When Jesus came he freed us from the law. Not the 10 commandments, but the law that man created to separate them from the gentiles, pagans, heathens, whatever you want to call them. I agree, no mortal man could ever live up to all the "laws" that were created... Though the law had its purpose, the law was an eternal yoke of bondage to the people. Keeping the law was the way to make God happy, a way of earning good status with God.

That is why when Jesus came and freed us from that yoke. It is throgh him and his grace that we have righteousness with God. Not by living a list of rules or laws.

Jesus wanted us to live by the new commandments: "Love the Lord your God... and Love your neighbor as you want to be loved"... Are these replacements of the 10 commandments"? Nope, they are a summation of the 10 commandments! If you live by them... you live the way God wants you to live..... in love!

However, regardless of his religious background.... Kudo's to him for the life changing journey he took! Imagine what the world would be like if everyone went on a quest like this!!

Just goes to show why we are to "rightly divide" the Word of Truth when it comes to Biblical application. Although it may appear admiral to do what you did, it is out of context. We (Jews and Gentiles) live under Paul's instructions today (1 Timothy 1:16). The Law of Moses and Old Testament commandments are not operable today. See Galatians 5:18.

Ah... what an inspirational read!

After finishing, I looked out my window and watched the wind blowing through the trees. The leaves of these living creations of God really do appear to be clapping - pretty cool!

Cudos to AJ for the choices in his his quest. There will always be those who find fault, but his journey clearly touched not only AJ, but many others' as well.

I think it's great that this man's year was strictly positive in it's concept. Amidst all the non-positive news we hear each day, this story shines though and reminds me what a truly awesome God we have.

As we continue our earthly journey, each of us looks for guidance. I choose to believe that Jesus is God's Son thus saving me from my human inability to be perfect in God's eyes.

Way to go brother AJ!

Having been raised in a Christian home, I appreciate the groundedness that it gives you. When I grew up and found out about the Holy Spirit--wow--and that "the letter (of the law) kills, but the Spirit brings life." II Corinthians 3:5-7 The New Covenant in the Bible became real to me. I Corinthians 15:44-45 says that Jesus was raised again as a life giving Spirit and I never heard that talked about growing up. There is life in the Word...seek Him.

I see no contradiction on Mr. Jacob's part as his title states clearly, "One Man's Humble Quest," as in "attempt" to follow the bible as literally as possible. There are no grounds to attack him for writing this book. Maybe his next project will be to attempt to live his life like Jesus. Oh, wait a second...how did Jesus live his life? As a Jew?

I get really confused by the New Testament. Can someone explain how if Jesus was really God, or God's son, or whatever, why he wouldn't have known that he would be returning to his rightful place in the heavens? What actual sacrifice did Jesus make for everyone if he knew that he would rise to the heavens? Afterall, dying a mortal death seems sort of symbolic, even insignificant, if you are immortal.

That adulterer stoning incident was funny but it misses the point of the Old Testament injunctions, in that they were addressed *to the community*, not to individuals. No individual was licensed to perform executions, only the community was to decide which individuals were harmful and should be removed.

Not that I'm advocating stoning, I'm a pacifist Mennonite. The point I am making is that the whole OT lifestyle is a communal one, not an individual one, and so although your experiment was fascinating and brave, it lacked one essential dimension: the communal.

yikes. some responses here are amazingly bitter. i am christian turned atheist and am so much happier without the pressures of christianity in my life. trying to force myself to have a relationship with someone/something i made up in my head was all too much. also, I think it's obvious why someone like myself would let go of religion- just looking at what christians have posted makes my point even more.

What about accepting, or at least trying to understand the oral law. When the Bible Says "An Eye for an Eye" but also says "Do Not take revenge" Ya think Maybe there's some need for explanation.
The Famous Bible commentator Rashi understood it to mean monetary compensation - which is indeed the actual Jewish law.
There is no group of scholars in the world who have literally given their lives to learn, analyze,teach and be enlightened by the Torah than the the truely righteous Rabbis throughout the Jewish People's 2000 year exile. Do you think maybe the've gleemed some information on the Five books of Moses, the Prophets and The Various Writings of the Bible.?
One does not have to be Jewish to recognize the scholarship that the Jewish people have aquired over the centuries. Mr Jacobs - if you're really open minded - go to a Yeshivah in Jerusalem or Moncie, NY
you'll be surprised just how relevant the Bible is for you and for all mankind.
