As a primary school teacher, I can't begin to tell you how important it is to keep children connected with famiy history. Sharing activities and memories of your father with Jack helps develop his sense of who he is and how he 'fits' in the world. So many kids have no personal identity and seek this out with deadly consequences. Oh- take your daughter fishing, too!

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

My first fishing experience was not until I was past 40. One of our dockmate in Ohio was an avid fisherman and took me out on Lake Erie. I caught my first perch and he took a Polaroid picture of the fish and I. He has passed away, but I always remember Tino and how he gave me an experience I'll never forget.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY. I set the hook and told her she'd better check her line. She let out a yell, "I've got one daddy". We still have a picture of her and her fish and I still get teary eyed looking at it. I've always told my kids that fishing and golf, aside from the cost of the equipment are 'very cheap therapy'. Some of my best days either with my kids or alone have been on the course or the water. He was more than my dad, he was my best friend..... Your story brought back memories of my dad and I fishing together..... We made many trips fishing and have so many memories of them.... Anything from problems encountered to the fish we caught, ALL of them good no matter what.... At this time I don;t have children of my own but hope to adopt the son of a woman I love deeply.... At the moment they are 9000 miles away in China... When we come together, GOD WILLING, one of the first things I want to do with him is go fishing.... I wish my dad would join us, BUT I know he will be there.... Lastly I see you and your son are like my dad and I becoming best friends thru a timeless endeavor..... Don't ever stop doing this with him, let the bond grow and enjoy the beautiful relationship you created by it.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

It was a beautiful story.I am a reader from the other side of pacific. It reminds my childhood with my father outing fishing and the life were gone.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

I live in International Falls Minnesota and sometimes because we have such an awesome lake(s) and river we take fishing and boating for granted. I remember fishing with my dad and my grandpa, in Mo. at Table Rock Lake, and James River, around Cape Fair, Mo., when I was very young, then my grandpa died when I was a teen and then my dad died in a car accident in 83 and I still hold those memories very close and dear to me. My dad went on to make memories for me my kids until he passed. My oldest daughter and her children now live in Cape Fair, on James River and owns a bait and tackle-convenience store owns a store. I also took my kids and their kids and my mom (who just recently passed away, whom I miss so bad) fishing so they will have those kind of life long memories when I am no longer with them either. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! ANY QUALITY TIME YOU SPEND WITH CHILDREN IS WELL WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT YOU HAVE PUT INTO IT, THAT IS HOW WE MAKE GOOD MEMORIES TO HOLD ONTO BECAUSE IN REALITY THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE LEFT WHEN ONE PASSES. Thank you very much for sharing it with the world. I have been bugging my husband to sell our camper and boat this year as we didn't get to spend much time with it and I could see where we won't be using them to awful much next summer either. The kids are getting bigger & their lives are getting more busier, but the 8 year old still loves to fish with his dad! He would rather fish than breathe!!! They go out fishing every Saturday & Sunday morning all summer long when we get the chance. The older son used to love it just as much but now his intrestes are sports and girls ( he is going to be 14 yrs old this November). I truly think that our younger son will continue to love fishing all of his life so long as he gets to spend that time with his dad! I have a nephew that turned 21 this year and he still loves fishing more than anything. He typically goes to Jones Beach from April 1st until the summer where he enjoys fishing all summer long in the bays in Cape Cod where he catches striped bass all day long. This year he took my older son with him to go fishing on the cape & he really loved it and caught a 28 inch stiped bass and was very excited about it. Thanx again Matt, I am not going to sell my boat now, there are way to many memories to be made yet!!!

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale
Matt,

You are super duper!

Fondest regards,
Ana

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Great personal story Mr.Lauer! My dad taught all five of us to fish, and we'd go fishing from either a boat or off of a nearby pier or bridge. Fishing isn't just about hooking a fish, killing it for bait or food, or tossing it back in the water if it's not the right kind. It teaches you about being quiet, being patient, and being careful with the hooks, the bait, and the fish, some of which have sharp fins (catfish), poisonous barbs (stingrays), and very sharp teeth (the occasional small shark). When we fished, we were often surprised with what was on the other end. Of course, there's the part where you have to scale, gut, and filet the fish, before you cook it.
Best of luck as you and your kids create your own traditions and memories, each time you go fishing.
TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Matt -
Thanks for showing us once again how 'real' you are and how you 'got reel' with Jack...now you need to bring him up to Alaska and "really reel" in some "REALLY" big fish - together!!

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Matt, when I was a kid I went fishing with my uncle, I had a stick with a line and a hook, and I caught the big catch of the day "My thumb". What a great story, and a great reminder of the times I spent fishing as a kid. My dad put in a pond at our house in Virginia and stocked it with fish so we could go fishing any time we wanted. We would have barbecues down by the fond, while mostly doing catch and release. Finally, my dad bought a 19-foot angler so we could go out fishing on the Chesapeake bay. We spent many great summers out on the bay, fishing, crabbing, and just enjoying life.

Thak you for bringing back those memories!

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Matt and Jack,

What a team. I know what it is like to see a smile on little faces. We have 4 beautiful children and they love the great outdoors. They love fishing and tadpole catching. This year they ruled out Disney (yeah) and we opted for the Mountain at Lake Lure. It was one of the greatest experience for us this year. Having just moved into a new home, children entering new schools and grades, meeting new neighbors, the trip was just what we needed. We climbed Chimney Rock, Kayak, Horseback riding, visted farms and enjoyed the sand at the beach. The cabin was breath taking. We could view the mountains from our back Deck and Lake Lure was tucked away around the corner. Matt keep up the great work on Today Show, you are the reason why I watch it. I don't normally write on blogs but when I realized who the subject was, I couldn't pass up the opporutnity to see what my favorite host was doing. She will benefit greatly from the time spent with you as well. I loved fishing with my dad and the experience it provided and the closeness it created. My dad had 4 kids (3 boys, 1 girl) and he used to say, "I have three boys but my daughter is my only son." and that was because I enjoyed fishing, camping in the desert, dune buggy's, etc while my brothers stayed home in bed. My son is the same age and is a budding angler as well.

Taking your child fishing (and the sometimes harder catching) builds trust, respect for Mother Nature, and memories that will last a lifetime. Now I'm going to take my son fishing!

Thanks and good luck!
TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Hi Matt - now I think you are not only wonderful to look at, but also a terrific dad. Enjoy every minute with the kids.

Martha
TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Mr. Lauer,
My family grew up in Galveston, TX, and my dad and I often wade fished in the Gulf of Mexico. Once, I was probably 10 years old or so, we waded out. I cast out and he walked out about 50 yards farther and did the same. In a few minutes, I hooked something and started yelling for him to help because I couldn't bring in in by myself no matter how hard I tried. It was windy and we couldn't hear each other clearly at all, but he started slowly walking back to me, waving his arms. I presumed he was encouraging me, so I began pulling with all my might, reeling in a little at a time, gaining on this monster. When he got close enough for me to hear him, he calmly asked me to stop pulling; I had hooked him in the thigh! We waded ashore, very quietly, and he sat down on a piece of driftwood and slowly removed the hook from his leg. I stood by, petrified, as he got to his feet, walked over to me and said, "I shouldn't have been fishing in front of you, my mistake; it won't happen again."
He passed away in 1992 and I still laugh and tear up thinking about that. We fished many times afterwards.
There's nothing like fishing with your kid! Keep it up.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Aloha! Matt, spend as much time as possible with your family. Life flies by so fast, our kids grow up so fast, you wake up one day and realize your kids are on their own and have their own children, what have I missed? I'm writing you with tears in my eyes and wishing I could turn back the clock to 40 years ago, I'm now trying to spend lots of time with my grandsons. This Q&A has swayed me towards really liking him as a human being, and a Dad. My husband is passionate about fishing, and has fished with our sons from the time they were old enough to safely ride in the boat (they are now 24 & 22). Mr. Lauer's love & pride for his son is palpable, and I understand the bond of sharing that he describes. My grandpa and other family member had fish shacks and sold the fish that was some of the income and we would have big fish cookouts in the old big iron pans over fire outside best fish around. So i learned how to fish and clean them and fix them at a real early age. So ya there is alot of story with my family grandpa and dad and all. i would not change anything.I am now teaching my son how to do all of it he is 13 my daughter allready knows how to do all of it so now this is my last one to teach all of it to and also having fun doing it.thanks for a good story hope you catch many more with your son.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

I enjoyed your story. When I was a child I went fishing with my father. we fished in a small creek near our home. Judging from what's on most TV programs, we're a nation that raises our children on "Salacious Stew". Even shows that were once family friendly are now throwing in the inappropriate with the appropriate and contaminating the whole program. It sends a confusing message...one that is not healthy for kids.

What is healthy for kids...and parents? Stories like your fish tale. (Those on television who would make a sexual joke out of that innocent terminology are angering parents.) Great numbers of Americans are looking for family content rather than the repeated rehashing of raunchy stories and raunchy comments about raunchy stories.

This was a wonderful story of innocent family fun. Let's see more of that on The Today Show.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Very nice story. I cant wait until my kid is old enough to fish. One fyi though. A 20 inch Striper is not a "keeper". It must be released. It sounds like you did that. A keeper would give that little guy quite a workout.
TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

This is the neatest story. I have fond memories of fishing with uncles since I was very young. These memories will stay with your son all of his life. Cudos to you for making these little things important to him.

TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Well Matt, that made me cry.
