Britney, Paris, Lindsey. These are examples of too much too soon leading to a sense of entitlement and superiority. The same thing happens in professional atheletics. I have to ask, Where are their parents? Where were their parents, long before the situation reached this level. I believe all of these girls are victims of their parents living vicariously through them, caring more about the paycheck they earn than the values they are developing, or a lack of commitment to raising emotionally healthy children. There are examples of performers who have early success and yet lead responsible lives as adults. It is newsworthy as a warning to all parents who over indulge their children at the cost of teaching them responsible behavior. Unfortunately, that isn't the story the media presents.

Sadly, I think the answer to that question is that NO steps would be taken if Britney wasn't famous. No one would know or care about her bad behavior. Ordinary people behave like Britney every day - it just doesn't make the papers. If she was still in her hometown and had never become famous, and was having these kinds of behavioral and family issues, it would be dealt with by her family. She would have to be doing a lot more serious stuff for the state to step in and take her kids. Don't get me wrong - I think it is appalling what people get away with doing to children. But I used to work in a mental health center, and I have seen it all. The authorities in my state will not remove children from the home unless they are practically being beaten to death. At least these children have nannies to see that their basic needs are met while their parents are out partying and doing who-knows-what. Countless others are pitifully impoverished, abused and neglected every day, all over the country, and no one does a thing.

I think I'm with the majority when I say I'm sick and tired of hearing about these celebs and their problems. But what frustrates me more than the celebs themselves is the general public. We buy into the stories, we keep up with there lives, hell, so many of us are so superficial in todays world we try to emulate as best we can. It's not just Brittany either, for example the Iraq War was put on the backburner for nearly a whole month when Anna Nicole Smith died, condolences to her family and friends; but I don't need to hear about which three men in her life could be her baby's daddy. I just feel the American society as a whole has lost there moral compass, and have forgotten about what matters most in life. We talk about celebrities and how this fame and money does such and such to them, but it is us empowering them by paying attention and, yes, money. Mental Illness in the US today is rampant, and our laws do nothing to deal with it. Her family, friends, management, fans, the media, can only stand by and watch -- and film -- her self-destruction. First of all, let us all stop calling them names because we don't know both sides of the story. What we do know is what the magazines tell us. That being said, I believe Britney has put those children in danger (i.e. driving while her son was on her lap, taking them to Las Vegas....) But, we mothers do understand that when our children have babysitters, we do like to relax and have a good time, have a few drinks. Maybe Britney has taken her 'away time' from her kids a little to the extreme with cloth-less rondevouz in the tub, but, again, what are the magazines not showing us? I think Britney has a problem, for sure. Maybe lack of common sense, maybe something more that needs medication.
Children need stability. They need to be the center of attention at that age. The need to thrive. Divorce sucks, and they need to start trying to get along before the children get to an age where they understand that mommy and daddy don't like eachother. At the same time, moms and dads needs breaks also. But not to such an extreme. Maybe Britney should join a book club or make friends with women who also have small children who can be of some good influence to her. Anyways, good luck to those children.

I agree fully with those who have pointed out that Britney Spears is a margunal talent at best. She cannot actually sing (her voice is enhanced by computers in the studio) and you can see her style of dancing in any local strip club! --As a producer on a network news/infotainment show, Noah Oppenheim deserves credit for at least asking the question "What makes any of this news?" Unfortunately, his answers don't invite the same level of praise.
--Labelling Britney "multi-talented" falls somewhere between generous and hysterical. She has (had) one talent: being a pop music performer, expressed by dancing and looking hot in music videos; the singing has always been secondary. Her one appearance, with mostly favorable notices, in a movie hardly earns her the title "multi-talented".
--Calling Kevin Federline "a punch line from the start" may seem to be common knowledge but it belies some screwed-up public expectation that, in order to be her consort, he was somehow required to be talented or famous on his own; otherwise, he's seen as not worthy.
--"there is an understandable interest in how an outwardly successful woman could so rapidly decline". Well, that's a pretty succinct definition of the term "tabloid", isn't it? Something the Today Show seems to have no trouble or shame in embracing. It also perpetuates the myth that the only way a celebrity could possibly become rich, famous, sexy, and talented is if they were happy, smart, and emotionally well-adjusted to begin with; or, conversely, that becoming rich and famous is a tonic that magically makes those pre-existing problems go away.
--"The 'fall from grace' is a legitimately fascinating narrative arc". Yes it is . . . in the sleazy tabloids, in legitimate news stories (Ken Lay, Michael Milken), in fiction (Citizen Kane, anyone?), and in autobiography -- the distinction being that, here, the person who "fell" is choosing to tell their story, oftentimes in order to correct all of the misrepresentations of their story made by media outlets at all levels of respectability.
--Oppenheim asks the question "What does it say that we ... actually expect they'll grow into self-destructive addicts?" We do? Speak for yourself, Noah. While there certainly is a documented history of child stars having trouble later in life ("She was never allowed to just be a kid! She was forced to grow up too soon!") the root cause of most of their troubles -- as is the case with all of us -- isn't the cold, impersonal machine of the entertainment industry; it's the family environment in which they were raised. Dr. Drew may embrace the medium of television and radio, but he's also right about this: dysfunctional adults were started down the path to dysfunction during their childhood. Sexual, mental, or physical abuse; emotional abandonment; pressure to achieve perfection (stage mothers, anyone?); celebrity or not, these are the factors that screw people up. If it seems like celebrities suffer these problems more than the general population, that's probably an indication of a desire to escape a troubled past through becoming someone else . . . a star! If you want to know why Britney is the way that she is, why she chose Federline, why she continues to make mistakes in spite of her fame and money -- look at her relationship with her father, period. But you can't wish away your problems, and the glaring spotlight of celebrity only guarantees that when your imperfections bubble up to the surface the things you were desperately trying to escape are now exposed to the whole world. Is it really any wonder that they then respond with even more self-destructive behavior? That even at the pinnacle of their fame they can still feel like abject failures? It's bad enough to have serious problems; it's worse when the whole world knows about it. Yeah, Noah. By parading their mistakes through a mostly hostile public gauntlet you are the ones who are not only expecting the self-destructive behavior, you're priming it. You're feasting on it.
--"IF someone who wasn't wealthy or famous behaved in the same fashion"? As several other posters have pointed out, there are countless moms across the country who treat their children just as bad, if not worse, than Britney does her kids; the difference is that those non-celebrity moms don't have hundreds of photogs documenting their every move. Brit isn't receiving some kind of celebrity pass from Child Services, and (once again) that totally unjustified expectation -- celebs are perfect; therefore, if they aren't the greatest parents in the world it's a crisis and a major news story -- leads to silly questions like this.
--Bottom Line: Another way to phrase Noah's question could be "Are we [media in general and the Today Show in particular] justified in focusing on this story?", which in the post he immediately followed with his own answer "Yes we are."
Noah, that icky feeling might be entirely self-generated.

IQ means nothing if you don't have common sense. I have a sister with a mental illness and has more common sense on how to treat children and adults than my drug addict nephew. Britney has the classic drug addict personality. Drugs (includes alcohol) are priority over her children! Like usual the children suffer, and we wonder what has happenned to the world.

What steps would be taken to ensure the boys safety if their parents weren't famous? Probably none. The news is rife with stories of children left with abusive parents because the system is too overworked. The fact that these two children are famous is probably the best thing the boys have going for them in the long run. It may cause MORE scrutiny to be paid to their case, not less.
