Where were their parents, long before the situation reached this level. I believe all of these girls are victims of their parents living vicariously through them, caring more about the paycheck they earn than the values they are developing, or a lack of commitment to raising emotionally healthy children. There are examples of performers who have early success and yet lead responsible lives as adults. It is newsworthy as a warning to all parents who over indulge their children at the cost of teaching them responsible behavior. Unfortunately, that isn't the story the media presents.

Why Britney Matters

Britney is the girl next door. The girl many of us grew up watching and listening to. She's that success story of someone who came from basically nothing and nowhere and "made it big!" There's this little part of most of us that want to know how the "other half" live, and when we actually see that they make mistakes, have tough times, and are scrutinized (the way we all feel we are in our lives) we kind of like that. It's sort of a guilty pleasure to watch the ones on top--fall straight to the bottom. It's not something we would all admit--but deep down it's the truth.

Why Britney Matters

Where are the "famous" people when they are needed? She had a beautiful talent, and she let it go to waste. Not by having kids, but by expecting the world to throw itself at her feet and wait on her hand and foot. Children are returned to parents with a history of abuse everyday. Why are we making a huge deal when it comes to Brittany and her parenting skills! Does she hit the kids? Does she burn them with cigaretts and lock them in closet? Does she not feed her kids?
Everyday in America some children go through that, and nobody helps, even when it is reported.. I have listened to everything that has gone on in the Brittany and Kevin custody battle, and I can't find one thing that would make Brittany lose custody. I do feel that she needs help, and needs to get herself together, but to take her kids away... I think that would cause the death of Brittany Spears. Every parent has made some mistake while raising a child, but we are not followed, filmed or put across the TV for america to view and judge.... Why don't we just leave her alone!...

Why Britney Matters

Spears is testerday, let's move on to today and subjects/individuals of real interest.

Why Britney Matters

We are getting all the information from the media and paparazzi...remember that these people need to make money. They are going to put anything into their stories to sell it. Comfort the dying babies.
And after six months, move back to the States, settle down in the country and take an assumed name. Write music. Raise your boys. But what frustrates me more than the celebs themselves is the general public. We buy into the stories, we keep up with there lives, hell, so many of us are so superficial in todays world we try to emulate as best we can. It's not just Brittany either, for example the Iraq War was put on the backburner for nearly a whole month when Anna Nicole Smith died, condolences to her family and friends; but I don't need to hear about which three men in her life could be her baby's daddy. I just feel the American society as a whole has lost there moral compass, and have forgotten about what matters most in life. If there were as many people interested in our government, economical, enviromental issues as there are that read the tabloids, gossip magazines, and watch E! we'd be much better off. But unfortunately, as a whole our priorities are no longer straight.

Why Britney Matters

There is no riding the fence any more. Their minds are vast wastelands. Yes, Britney can sing and dance but she has no real understanding of the performing arts. I meet Britney in 2000 and she was a real cute sweet girl, with strong family ties. She should have gone to college, studied music and the arts. I think that we would be looking at a much different Britney now. Alot of teen stars do go to college or study online. It makes a big difference in their lives. I hope Britney wakes up soon that she is not the cute popteen star anymore and is a mother and should be a role model for other singers. Point being, for the most part you won't hear women throw around that accusation when a woman divorces her wealthy husband and asks for a tidy sum. They'll agrue, "she entitled to that." However, in the rare instance when the roles are flipped, i.e., when the woman earns the most money, we hear some of these so-called Womens-Libs gripe about how he's unfairly stealing her money. Unbelieveable! Like I said, I think Federline is screw-up himself, but in this instance, more power to you brother! She entered stardom at such an early age, that she never really got the chance to enjoy her childhood. The past few years, her actions have been normal to that of an early 20-something year old girl (who's hot and living in a major metropolitan city like LA). Now people just wont leave her alone. Let her be! She's trying hard to raise a family on her own. I may not agree with everything she has done (holding a baby in her lap while driving, etc), but there is no handbook on parenting. We all make mistakes, and we learn from them. If the paparazzi actually got themselves a real job, maybe all these young stars (Britney, Linsay, Paris, etc) wouldn't be lashing out making drastic decisions like shaving their heads or driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. What we do know is what the magazines tell us. That being said, I believe Britney has put those children in danger (i.e. driving while her son was on her lap, taking them to Las Vegas....) But, we mothers do understand that when our children have babysitters, we do like to relax and have a good time, have a few drinks. Maybe Britney has taken her 'away time' from her kids a little to the extreme with cloth-less rondevouz in the tub, but, again, what are the magazines not showing us? I think Britney has a problem, for sure. Maybe lack of common sense, maybe something more that needs medication.
Children need stability. They need to be the center of attention at that age. The need to thrive. Divorce sucks, and they need to start trying to get along before the children get to an age where they understand that mommy and daddy don't like eachother. At the same time, moms and dads needs breaks also. But not to such an extreme. Maybe Britney should join a book club or make friends with women who also have small children who can be of some good influence to her. Anyways, good luck to those children.

Why Britney Matters

Someone said Britney's mother should have the kids.... This young star was put into the spotlight at a very young age. She wanted to be a star and we gave her everything to do so. She is a beautiful girl and we all know we love beautiful young stars. Her life has to be hard because of all the attention she gets and soon as she makes any kind of mistake we are right there to shove her down. It's funny because we want to see people exceed in life and we want to see them fail. She is no different then anyone else, we all make mistakes in life. We all like to think we are perfect, but I don't care what anyone says, no one is perfect. Just let the girl live and learn. We don't need to know every little thing she does wrong. It also perpetuates the myth that the only way a celebrity could possibly become rich, famous, sexy, and talented is if they were happy, smart, and emotionally well-adjusted to begin with; or, conversely, that becoming rich and famous is a tonic that magically makes those pre-existing problems go away.
--"The 'fall from grace' is a legitimately fascinating narrative arc". Yes it is . . . in the sleazy tabloids, in legitimate news stories (Ken Lay, Michael Milken), in fiction (Citizen Kane, anyone?), and in autobiography -- the distinction being that, here, the person who "fell" is choosing to tell their story, oftentimes in order to correct all of the misrepresentations of their story made by media outlets at all levels of respectability.
--Oppenheim asks the question "What does it say that we ... actually expect they'll grow into self-destructive addicts?" We do? Speak for yourself, Noah. While there certainly is a documented history of child stars having trouble later in life ("She was never allowed to just be a kid! She was forced to grow up too soon!") the root cause of most of their troubles -- as is the case with all of us -- isn't the cold, impersonal machine of the entertainment industry; it's the family environment in which they were raised. Dr. Drew may embrace the medium of television and radio, but he's also right about this: dysfunctional adults were started down the path to dysfunction during their childhood. Sexual, mental, or physical abuse; emotional abandonment; pressure to achieve perfection (stage mothers, anyone?); celebrity or not, these are the factors that screw people up. If it seems like celebrities suffer these problems more than the general population, that's probably an indication of a desire to escape a troubled past through becoming someone else . . . a star! If you want to know why Britney is the way that she is, why she chose Federline, why she continues to make mistakes in spite of her fame and money -- look at her relationship with her father, period. But you can't wish away your problems, and the glaring spotlight of celebrity only guarantees that when your imperfections bubble up to the surface the things you were desperately trying to escape are now exposed to the whole world. Is it really any wonder that they then respond with even more self-destructive behavior? That even at the pinnacle of their fame they can still feel like abject failures? It's bad enough to have serious problems; it's worse when the whole world knows about it. Yeah, Noah. By parading their mistakes through a mostly hostile public gauntlet you are the ones who are not only expecting the self-destructive behavior, you're priming it. You're feasting on it.
--"IF someone who wasn't wealthy or famous behaved in the same fashion"? As several other posters have pointed out, there are countless moms across the country who treat their children just as bad, if not worse, than Britney does her kids; the difference is that those non-celebrity moms don't have hundreds of photogs documenting their every move. Brit isn't receiving some kind of celebrity pass from Child Services, and (once again) that totally unjustified expectation -- celebs are perfect; therefore, if they aren't the greatest parents in the world it's a crisis and a major news story -- leads to silly questions like this.
--Bottom Line: Another way to phrase Noah's question could be "Are we [media in general and the Today Show in particular] justified in focusing on this story?", which in the post he immediately followed with his own answer "Yes we are."
Noah, that icky feeling might be entirely self-generated.

Why Britney Matters

To the M.D.
IQ means nothing if you don't have common sense. I have a sister with a mental illness and has more common sense on how to treat children and adults than my drug addict nephew. Britney has the classic drug addict personality. Drugs (includes alcohol) are priority over her children! Like usual the children suffer, and we wonder what has happenned to the world.

Why Britney Matters

I am so sick of tabloids smearing people and judging people.KFED SMEARED BRITNEY FOR THE MONEY. ITS ALL GREED AND ITS A MESS. KFED WILL PAY AND THAT LAWYER TOO. THIS IS REALLY DIRTY. LOOK AT EDDIE MURPHY DIVORCES HIS WIFE WITH FIVE KIDS,HELL HE IS HAVING DIRTY SPICE PREGANT THAN MARRY A PRODUCER. NOW SOCIETY DOES NOT CONDEM A MAN FOR PLAYING AROUND BUT BRITNEY GETS CONDEMNED. I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS TWENTY I DID CRAZY THINGS. STOP JUDGING UNTIL YOU WALK IN OTHER PEOPLES SHOES AND STOP JUDGING BRITNEY'S PHOTOS WHEN YOUR NOT IN THE STORY. WE CAN ONLY MAKE ASSUMPTIONS ON THOSE PHOTOS. FOR EXAMPLE, THEY SAID SHE WAS A BAD MOM SINCE THE KIDS HAD NO LIFE JACKETS ON THE BOAT. WELL, MAYBE THE BOAT WASNT READY TO GO YET OR MAYBE SHE WAS READY TO GET OFF AND TOOK THE LIFE JACKETS OFF BEFORE THE PICS. AMERICA HAS TO GET A LIFE AND STOP JUDGING. GOD CAN ONLY DO THAT. UNFORTUNATELY THE DEMON KFED IS SMEARING BRITNEY AND BRITNEY IF YOU ARE READING THIS THE SMART THING WOULD BE TO HANG LOW AND NOT TRUST ANYBODY SINCE ALL THOSE MEN U FOOD AROUND WITH BRAG WHEN THEY MESS WITH YOU. ITS RIDUCULOUS. IF BRITNEY IS A BAD MOM THAN EDDIE MURPHY IS A BAD FATHER FOR HAVING THOSE DAM AFFFAIR AND NOT DEVOTING TIME TO HIS KIDS. MEN GET A WAY WITH IT AND WOMEN ARE CONDEMNED WHEN THEY HAVE AFFAIRS SOCIETY HAS NOT CHANGED!

Why Britney Matters

What steps would be taken to ensure the boys safety if their parents weren't famous? Probably none. The news is rife with stories of children left with abusive parents because the system is too overworked. The fact that these two children are famous is probably the best thing the boys have going for them in the long run. It may cause MORE scrutiny to be paid to their case, not less.
