The coloring of the dragon, more particularly the eye, leads me to believe that they're riding an Antipodean Opaleye, which is native to New Zealand and Australia. How would they have gotten one of those? Perhaps with the help of one Charlie Weasley?

I dont think this is Norbert. Norbert is a Norwegian Ridgeback, which is described as having "jet black ridges along its back." That sounds uncomforable to ride on. I think it is an Opaleye or a Romanian Longhorn.

A couple of observations... 1. It appears that Ron and Hermione are wearing robes (school robes?) and Harry is not. Perhaps a clue to the Hogwarts open or no and whether Harry attends for his final year. 2. It just fits that Norbert would return. Kinda makes ya all warm and fuzzy inside thinking that might be the case. Norbert knows his mommy!

Snape isnt a dark wizard. he did everything on dumblydores orders. Poor snape... High price to pay to prove your loyalty. But he and harry will never like each other. Just as good people sometimes dont get along. so do good wizards. For 2 ppl to not get like each other, it doesnt have to be one good one evil. As for why dumbly dore ordered snape to kill him or to throw a curse that APPARENTLY seems like a killing curse while he says a non-verbal spell silently, is anyones best guess. (remember, u really have to mean a killing curse, simply saying the spell doesnt work)

I can't wait till this book and movie 5 come out. Too bad this will be the final book in the series, but hopefully JK Rowling will delight us with a new project to keep us guessing for the next 10 years... Predictions: Hermione and Ron get together, as do Ginny and Harry. Voldemort croacks in the end due to running out of horcruxes. I do think the dragon has something to do with getting rid of a horcrux or two. I'm afraid Lupin will give up the ghost in this one as well. Snape is not the traitor everyone thought he was at the end of the sixth book, but chooses the non-dark side.

Norbert has been blinded in one eye in whatever adventure caused the tattered clothing and wings. They are rushing to rescue Hermione and Ron, who have been taken prisoner by Voldemort. Norbert is helping them because he was made into a horcrux by Dumbledore before he was sent to live with Charlie. He has returned upon Dumbledore's death to help Harry defeat Voldemort.

I work at a public library and my co-worker and I are big Harry Potter fans. We think that J.K. While I do hope that H,R,&H all survive; in the real world(it's very real to the characters), it would be miraculous that the determined/intelligent sect of the Deatheaters would be that imcompetent. As for Ginny, her character has grown stronger w/ each new volumn-she's a talented witch who many of her friends and classmates alike agree is gifted for one so young.I'm 41 years old and an avid reader - Ginny's character is NOT a waste! Harry cares deeply, so if Cho is his choice,let's accept it. Besides, in "Goblet", Herm made it clear that Ron is her choice. As for the dragon, I too would like for it to be Norbert, but unfortunately, the markings don't match his breed. Like one gentleman above, I would LOVE IT if it did turn out to be Hagrid. Or even another close friend that has not been pegged as an Animagus (possibly Neville?).

I think the trio is flying over Godric's Hollow, Harry's hometown, where his parents are buried. They've obviously been involved in some form of battle if their clothes are tattered. But, they're not done looking for Horcruxes and Harry probably hasn't had his final showdown with Voldemort. At the end of Deathly Hallows, Harry said he wanted to visit his parent's graves. This would be the first time since Voldemort's attack on his family, 16 years earlier that Harry is going home. There are bound to be poignant moments that await him.

My daughter was too young for the advanced English of the first book but we watched the movies and read books four, five, and six together. She is mostly too old now for me to read "to" her but I made it clear that we'll read the last of this series together no matter when it came out. This series is one of three that I got to share with her this way. The other Two were all seven books of the "Chronicles of Narnia" and all thirteen of "A series of unfortunate events." Pretty good reading memories all said and done.

Ok, in my opinion, the dragon could very well be Norbert. I mean the TriWizard dragon and Gringotts dragon would be too wild and untamable, thus, making them unridable. Ok, predictions: I'm unclear as to wheather J.K. means that 2 characters besides Voldemort will die or including him. So my guess is both Voldemort and Harry die, as Harry sacrifices himself to rid the world of the Dark Lord. If there is another to die then I guess it will be either Snape, Lupin, Moody, or Neville. If there truly is a reprieve for one of the dead characters then it has to be Sirius Black. After all, he escaped Azkaban, why not the veil too? I think Dumbledore will return, but as an imprint (ghost) to help Harry find the reamaining Horcruxes. Neville will get a measure of revenge/justice on LeStrange for what she did to his parents. I believe Dumbledore was dying anyways, due to smashing the ring in his left hand, so he had Snape kill him so he could rejoin Voldemort's army as a spy.

But she forced him to kill her and since then Dumbledore could trust Snape, because Snape's goal was clear and straightforward - get close to Voldemort and kill him.

I don't think the dragon is Norbert. It has no pupils, which would makes it an opaleye. I think ron and hermione end up going to school, but harry doesn't. I also think they are in New Zeland. The weather in the south is cold there, so it would explain why harry is wearing an ugly jaket. Houses in New Zeland look like the houses on the cover. And in the normal D.H. cover, harry is wearing something around his neck, that could be a fish hook pendant that are used in New Zeland as talismans. And opaleye dragons are easy to tame, so the trio would have no problem riding it. And New Zeland has many hills.

If this place is New Zeland, then it would make sense. I did some reserch on the history of south New Zeland, and I found the story of how it was discovered. Captin Cook lead the ship there; and onboard there was a 12 year old named Nick Young. Nick was the 1st to spot land, therefore they called the spot they found young NICK'S HEAD. Kind of like Sir Nickolas/aka/ nearly headless nick. Maybe this is just a quoinsidence, but I found this to be pretty cool. I found a relation between nick young and sir nick. and that is that they do not fufill the requirements. Nick young was too young to be accepted, and sir nick didn't have his head cut off all the way, so he couldn't join the headless hunt. I'm probably totally wrong. :p But it would be real cool if i was rite :)

I think that is it probably not hermione and Ron. It would look to be two younger students as they are wearing robes and are terrified. Harry on the other hand is determined looking, not scared. Ron and Hermione have also gone through many scary situations so I don't think they would look as terrifed as these two look. If you recall in the first book at the first potions class Snape tells of a potion that will make you seem dead to others. Also before Dumble. dies he is telling Malfoy to join them and they can make it look like he is dead. All of this leads me to believe that Dumble is alive. Remember, he just made Harry make him drink all of the liquid that was covering the crux... i love these Books!!!!!!

Where is Godric Hollow mentioned? Where is it said that you had to kill someone to make a Horcrux? Are the British versions different from the American, like do they give more info? I thought both spoke English (though a slightly different dialect) so the books were the same with a different cover. Also, where in the books does it say Snape was in love with Lily? Where does it say Ron was a Death Eater? Are you people making this stuff up because i reread the series and didnt see any of these things!!!!I need these questions answered!!!! Anyways, as for the cover, you can never really truly tell what is inside the book, but I think this story will take an unbelievable twist, so dont make speculations. My husband and I have read the entire series. We have enjoyed debating it on may different levels. Alot of what you all write has made us think in a different direction. Here are a few ideas that we have come up with. 1. Dumbledore will live on, but as a picture in the Hogwarts headmasters office. Hence, he can then converse with Harry again and visit him in other pictures as well. 2. Harry quit Hogwarts at the end of the last book to go after Voldemort. This is why he is not in robes. 3. The pendant around his neck is the horcrux from 12 Grimauld Place, it was in the cabinet mentioned in book 5. 3. Harry's guardian Sirius will return. Harry still has the magic mirror from Sirius to communicate with him. 4. We would love to think that the dragon is Hagrid since he is so big, but the eyes confuse us. Maybe he could be Draco.... turned good. 5. We do not think Harry is a horcrux, but the Neville may be since he is the other chosen one. 6. We belive that Snape also has a scar on his forhead that is covered up by "greasy black curtains of hair". OR EVEN BETTER! Snape may even be Harry.... okay that is going too far. But hmmmm. 7. It would be nice that Harry is reunited with his Mum and Dad. By killing Harry, JKR makes it so that no other author can pick up where she left off. All of the above are our opionion of course. But is is fun to guess. I like the idea of JKR writing books about Harry's parents and all of the characters mentioned to have gone to school with them. I think we should start a letter writing campaign....

As for me...another "older" reader...seeing the commentary on this site, makes me appreciate writing even more. I am taken aback though, by J.K.'s departure from this genre'. Take Star Trek for example; they finally woke up, and saw that there was a craving for it, and oh yeah...more money for the creator's as well!! to briana- first off, the content in the US and British versions of the books should most certainly be the same. all of those questions you asked are very prevalent parts of the books. i have no idea how you missed them if you read all of the books. so, in answer to your questions: 1. the dragons guarding gringotts bank were mentioned by hagrid in book 1 when he tells harry that you would be a fool to try and rob gringotts because of the dragons guarding the vaults. on the trip in the mining cart, harry even mentions seeing or imiagining a blast of fire that could have been a dragon. 2. godric hollow is where harry's parent's lived. metioned several times throughout the series so far by many characters. 3. horcruxes were the most integral part of book 6. you must have stopped reading halfway through to miss the explaination of horcruxes and why they are evil from slughorn, dumbledore, etc.. 4. nowhere in the books does it say that snape was in love with lilly. that is called an "inference". that word means reading something and making an ecducated guess about what it means, which is what most of the posters on this board are doing. simply sharing predicitons. the snape/lilly connection isn't something i ever considered before, but after reading some of these posts, it does make sense if you have actually read the books. 5. i don't recall any post on this board about ron being a death eater...maybe you were mistaken hope that answers your questions. maybe you should go back and read the books more carefully. it seems as tho you are missing some important content. oh, and it's fun to make speculations, and it's certainly not foolish to do so. most experienced readers will do this to test their prowess.

The dragon is not norbert, it is an antipodean opaleye dragon. If you are a hardcore HP fan you would have known this from reading "fantastic beasts and where to find them". The dragon is native to New Zealand though it has been known to migrate to Australia. It dwells in valleys rather than mountains. This dragon is not aggressive and will rarely kill unless hungry. Upon further research of the word "anitpodean" i found that in geography, the antipodes (from Greek anti- "opposed" and pous "foot") of any place on Earth is its antipodal point; that is, the region on the Earth's surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points which are antipodal to one another are connected by a straight line through the centre of the Earth. As is turns out the antipode of england is australia and new zealand.
As it turns out, today Jo released the third and final wombat behind the "do not disturb" door, and the questions look like cannon. One of the questions was "Does a witch or wizard need the authorization of a country if they are to use a portkey to travel from one country to that country? I think that Jo is trying to give us a clue here. I definitely think that harry, ron and hermione will travel to another country.

I am 41 and was very skeptical about the books until I had nothing else to read one day and read the first one in mere hours, I got hooked and could'nt put it down. These books have been great for the imagination of our younger generation where imagination has seemed to have gone out the door. I would love to see an 8th book where she writes how everyone who has surrvived is getting on with life after all the drama. Some of these caractater have become somone we can relate to for some aspect of their personalities. Everyone has come up with some great ideas and thoughts about the book, now lets all read it and find for ourselves how it ends.

Thanks, JK Rowling for an outstanding series!!! I will miss Harry Potter!! In this picture, it looks like they're frantic and in a hurry - either running from something or running to something.
I agree Neville is going to play a big part in book 7, because of the prophecy given in book 5, but I'm not sure yet what that is. Also, in the first movie, Hermione tells Harry, "As long as Dumbledore's around, you can't be touched. As long as Dumbledore's around, you're safe." Now that Dumbledore's not around to protect him, it makes me think that Harry is indeed in danger of being killed (however, I like the idea of Dumbledore coming back the same way a phoenix does). Harry's scar being a horcrux is interesting, and something that I have thought of before, too. Which means that Harry will have to sacrifice himself in order for Voldemort to be finished off (I dread that concept.) But, JK Rowling said that the book has a very satisfying ending, and I'm anxious to find out what it is ...

Okay I am 18 years old and I love Harry Potter to death. I also accept all opinions that everybody made on this website to, but my opinion is that I like Ginny Weasley for who she is, because she has an Irish background and me, I am a little bit Irish. But a legend told or what I have been told, I could be wrong or right, I don't know, but witchcraft has originated all the way back in Ireland. For example like Wiccan and some others that I can't remember. Who ever reads this and doesn't like what I am saying I am sorry. But also with professor Snape, I also don't see anything wrong with, but he turned on Harry Potter or something like that in one of the books if my memory is treating me well. I can't say exactly how,what,or what exactly happened in that book because one thing I read awhile back when it first came out and second of all it was a little emotional for me. To me I reall think that J.K. Rowling did a splendous job on plotting out the story line with the book. Then directors deciding to trasposing her books into the movie. I think evering who took part in making the efforts possible did an excellent job. Because without us and them, it wouldn't be possible to have her making the final book, possibly a hit right now.

Dumbledore did NOT create a Horcrux. He would have had to commit murder to do that (it's part of the spell) and he would NOT have done that. Nor would he have devided his soul.

Looks like there's a chase or battle of some sort going on. If you copy and paste it in paint or some such you can see more detail. When I looked at the small picture above I thought maybe it was the end (wishful thinking). Then enlarged you can see this appears to be in the midst of the action.

At the back of the book it mentions that Harry is on a journey to destroy the remaining horcuxes that Voldermolt has. So the dragon Hagrid probaly provided for their journey is going to help them get back to Voldermolts cave to find it and destroy the horcuxes.

Remember Dumbledore's Phoenix who would recapiculate into its live form after going to ashes. Has Dumbledore reformulated into a dragon? All I can say is that I will really miss the Harry Potter series. It is so sad that so few great stories are out there. What will we all read when Harry Potter is over?

A few things. JKR has made it clear that it is Ron and Hermione who will end up together. After the release of HBP, she was quoted saying she felt it was incredibly obvious since the fourth book that it would be Ron for Hermoine. Ginny is not a "waste". She's a talented witch who's just now realizing her potential. I'm afraid poor Ginny and Ron have suffered terribly at the hands of those who want Harry and Hermoine together, and I think it's sad and unfair.

To the person who said that Dumbledore may leave part of himself behind in a Horcrux...are you reading the same series I am? The fact that JKR has said definitively "Dumbledore IS dead" notwithstanding, to create a Horcrux, one must commit the supreme act of evil. Murder. Dumbledore is the SUPREME good guy. He would never commit such dark magic as creating a Horcrux. He isn't afraid of death, so why would he?

I can't wait for the last HP book and 5th movie coming out this summer. I think the author did mention something in the news about not wanting people to spawn off her main character (ie Harry Potter). Therefore, Harry would die in this last book, including his adversary, Voldemort. It's too bad that the series end soon. I really enjoy those books a lot.

Dumbledore IS dead (as is Sirius). JK Rowling has stated this definitively. And no, he didn't create a horcrux. Only dark wizards do this. Dumbledore is GOOD. As for the reprieve, she was referring to characters that will die in the 7th book. NOT characters who are already dead. So, unfortunately, it won't be Sirius who gets the reprieve. She was going to kill three "good" characters, and decided one didn't need to die, so it is down to two. My picks are Snape and Harry (there are reasons I think this which are too many to go into here :D), with Hagrid being the one who gets the reprieve.

Question: How do we know that there are any clues in the cover art? Could the cover art simply be the creation of the artist using "artistic license" without trying to give specific details about the story? Or, on the other hand, was the painting done under the direct supervision of Rowling or someone in the know? If that is the case, then maybe there are clues in the painting. By the way, has the artist said anything about the painting?

On another subject: did you notice that no one actually saw Dumbledore's body as Hagrid carried it to his funeral "pyre" (if that's the right word.) Could all of this have been staged to convince Voldemort to be more bold (read careless) because he thinks Dumbledore is out of the way? Actually I'd rather see Dumbledore kill Voldemort, or better, imprison him permanently, rather than Harry kill him. Just don't like to see Harry kill someone.

Finally, on yet another subject, did anyone notice that Neville was born on the same day as Harry?

Where to begin...
The picture - The dragon could be one of several breeds: Common Welsh Green, Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback, or the Romanian Longhorn but my best guess is that it's an Antipodean Opaleye that originates in New Zealand but there are Dragon "camps" maintained by wizards. I think Harry is wearing a dragonhide coat. Compare the coat to the dragon's skin. They're quite similar. Yes Hermione and Ron are with him and I think it's near the first third of the book because I think they are still hunting for Horcruxes at this point. I believe the town below is either a town that contains a horcrux or Godrics Hollow and the mist is the dementors breeding.
As for what is to come in Deathly Hallows: 1. Dumbledore is dead. 2. The trio will not return to Hogwarts for school but at some point will return for something - Jo did say that Harry would have seven years there. 3. It's completely irrational but I have this sinking feeling that Molly Weasley isn't going to make it. What are the odds that the entire weasley clan will live? Arthur, Ginny, Bill, and Ron have already had their close calls, the twins are too popular, Percy's not worth it, and Charlie's out of the country. 4. As much as I LOVE to hate Snape, really, truely despise him...he's a good guy. Drat. And I think he did love Lily and that was the real secret that Dumbledore had over him. Why else would Voldemort spare her life, telling her to get out of the way (he's Voldemort what does he care if she lives) unless it's at the request of his faithful servant who has brought him the information he needs (or so he thinks) about the prophesy? 5. R.A.B. is obviously Regulus Black but it takes two to get the cup from the cave but only one wizard could go. And the potion does bad things to the drinker. What about Kreature? Maybe Regulus took him and that's why the elf has gone nutters. He had to drink the potion. Even though Dumbledore was probably slowly dying from it, it has been said that drinks effect wizards and elfs differently. 6.Pairings: Harry/Ginny (duh), Ron/Hermione, Remus/Tonks, I'm not sure but I hope for Neville/Luna too. 7. A crazy theory: I don't think Dumbledore was right about all the horcruxes. Something doesn't feel right about the snake or the Gryffindor/Ravenclaw items. Even Dumbledore said that when he makes mistakes they are big ones. Maybe Harry IS a Horcrux. 8.How it will end: There will be a final massive battle and it's then when Harry might be starting to lose the fight that Snape will step in and reveal things about Harry's parents and possibly, if he becomes enraged enough, his love for Lily and his hate for James at stealing her from him. And somehow through it Ginny's love/Harry's love for her will save Harry.

Crystal, I was with you until the part where you said Ginny's love will save Harry. If Harry is a horcrux, he cannot live can he? I personally think it would be a brilliant ending if Harry has to sacrifice himself in order to defeat Voldemort. Its fitting of his character to put others before himself. Plus, anything that resembles a family (besides the Weasleys, and I to think one of them wont make it and it will probably be Molly) has been killed. One of the three will probably die and it wont be Ron or Hermione because they obviously end up together. Ron and Hermione will live happily ever after retelling the legend of HP's bravery their whole lives. And will most likely name a son after Harry.

Plus, this deters futher sequels which will ruin the brilliant story that Jo has laid out.

Hmmm... I'm not entirely sure that the last boy is Ron, because i mean it could be malfoy... cant say i havent expected for him to make up with harry for a while now. But as for the dragon, i'd beleive to be norbert-- wouldnt that be a nice ally to have during a war? But its eyes have no pupil, so it still could be the opaleye... the second girl is obviously hermione... where else would she be? I dont think rowling would kill her off... The town below, likely to be Godrics Hollow, but i could be wrong. The mist could be several things... after-effect of breeding dementors, a foreshadow describing an impending tragedy, or, well they are in the mountains, are you telling me its never foggy there? Grandpre couldve just made that so it adds to a realitsic scenery.

But some things cant be explained just by looking. Like Harry's new jacket, may be dragon skin... who knows. COuld also be a magical item he came across during his hunt for the horcruxes. And then theres the dragon... Ive already stated my views on that, but there could be other reasons

I bet Rowling is just loving that she alone knows whats going to happen, lording it above us... But thats the point, the books would be no good if readers new what was going on, would they? Im looking forward to reading DH, once i get it, Ill proboably read it nonstop until i finish, and probably several times in succession...

there are many possibilities, Harry is most likely not a Horcrux. But, it is possible. There is also probably a horcrux in godric's hollow. The village in the picture is not Godric's hollow. The dragon is Norbert it has a black ridge on its back. Harry kills Voldemort, I think. Snape dies I think Harry kills him.

I do believe that the dragon is Norbert. If it's not, well, it should be. Ron and Hermione are wearing cloaks, and Harry isn't. Could this mean that Harry doesn't return to Hogwarts?
I would also like to point out that in the first book, Hagrid makes a statement about being defeated over and over again that he'll (Voldemort) will eventually fail. IF Voldemort defeats Harry, wouldn't that be defeating the whole purpose of the books. Good triumphing Evil?
I think Harry will survive, and Ron and Hermione, as much as I HATE to say this, will die. It's kind of forshadowing! The good, muggle-born girl (Hermione), and the mischeivous, trouble-making boy (Ron--not that he is trouble making, i just couldn't think of another word for him) will end up getting together. (Hint-Lily and James) I think they might even sacrifice themselves for Harry to continue his search for the Horcruxes. (End of HBP Ron says that Hermione and himself will always be there for Harry.)
I also think that Dumbledore will return. Not as a human, but maybe as a ghost. Ms. Rowling has said that we will find out why ghosts are created, or left on earth. Dumbledore has said numerous amounts of times that he will remain as long as people believe in him at Hogwarts, or something like that.
Those are just a few of my theories.

I think that the Order has gotten wind of the battel that Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters are planing, so the Order has sent Harry Ron and Hermiony to somewere were they can be looked after and so they are not in the path of LV and the DEs but there flight was delaied so iam thinking that they got in the way of the battle witch would explain the tattered cloths, and Norberts wings. P.S notice Ginnys not in the picure maybe she was killed to get a hold on Harry.It does not affect Harry now but when the war is over he will regret it not at the loss but at the sorrow of her family.

A town. its possible they have visited the one and the only godric's hollow. about the dragon it could either be the dragon from gringotts, an unkown order dragon that has somehow be controlled(prolly got it from charlie), an agimagus(i cant spell for my life, but u get the idea), or just a dragon that harry, ron, and hermione somehow got under control. about the blond not red-headed boy i think it could be colin creevay or some family friend of harry that they met in godri's hollow. i dont think it is ron because Mary has like never made any mistakes in dipicting the books events. also the town is in the mountains. maybe they went there for some giant work...

I can't believe some people msg'ing haven't read the books (but then again, I haven't read all the msgs). I see a ridge on the dragon's back, and I don't think JKR would've made such an issue out of Norbert in the SS if she didn't intend to use him again (Ron makes a BIG deal out of him being a Norwegian Ridgeback). And I have always held that Snape, while being hostile and unpleasant, is going to be redeemed. I HOPE he is the character who got a reprieve, but I, sadly, must come to the conclusion that he will die. Who I think might be redeemed is, actually, Voldemort, when he gets a piece of his soul back from HP--a piece of soul soaked in love--and only THEN can one live and the other survive...perhaps HP will free Tom Riddle of his fear of death and allow him to die...? But poor Severus...as he probably not only DID heinous acts as a Death Eater, he lived a desperately unhappy life (like Lupin), so, as I said before, he must sacrifice himself.
BUT...I have been teased about this notion an awful lot, I think it is quite possible that Snape might REALLY be HP's...well, DADA...after all, Switching Spells, Polyjuice Potion, Love Potions, and HP even thinking to himself that maybe James forced Lily into marrying him...(OOTP)...aren't these clues, maybe...? And remember HP's offhand thought that (forgive, I don't recall which book) that Harry had as much chance of doing whatever-it-was as that of Snape adopting him...? Well, the publisher's rep said the last book brought him to tears, so something tremendous occurs, and as "The Great Snape Debate" says, Harry and Snape are like two freight trains on the same track, heading for eachother.

Okay, I read Harry Potter daily, book 5 and 6 cause those two are important to book 7, and I can tell you for a fact that im 100% sure that...

dumbledore is dead. Jk said this in a interview.

sirius is not dead. never said he was, he fell behind a curtain, thats it. he'll be back :)

Snape is on the good side. He had to kill voldy or snape would die causde he made the unbreakable vow and then we would have lost our top spy since voldy thought snape was on his side, and we didnt need dumbledore anymore because he already told Harry everything that he needs to know to destroy voldy, so dumbledore dying was better then loosing our top spy.

2 MAIN characters are going to die. Once again, she said so. Im counting on Voldy and I dunno who else, but she wouldnt put all 3 of em alive on the special edition cupboard if they werent gonna live and ive got bout 50 other reasons why the trio will live...

...tho ive always wondered why Voldy has never went after Hermione to kill/torture/set against harry/ etc...

Dumbledore HATED horcruxes! The only way to form a horcrux is to kill anoda human! No way would he even have ever come close to considering that! He believes that death should not be tampered with. And it is clearly said in the half blood prince installment that fawkes has left for good. And Mary Grandper has done a brilliant job.
