It is truly important to know about the background of ones family. The trip to Jamaica that you took with your mother sounds really enlightening to visit all those places connected to your family. I am happy that you were able to see the house your grandmother was raised in with her siblings. These things are so vital to pass down through the generations so that nothing is forgotten. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Happy Mothers Day to your mom!

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Dear Mr. Holt,

I am married to a beautiful, funny Jamaican for 17 years now and we have produced two great funny half Jamaican - half Ecuadorian daughters. My beautiful Jamaican husband will soon to deploy to Iraq with his Marine Corps unit, but before that happens, I have encouraged him to visit Jamaica with our girls while I stay behind and finish my teacher certification.

Both my husband and I enjoyed your Jamaica story and it is my hope that my girls will experience similar Jamaican stories when they visit Jamaica with their Dad, grandmother and uncle this summer. It is the best I can give my family before he leaves to serve the U.S.A.

I hope you picked up some Jamaican patua. If not, my daughter will gladly send you a patua dictionary.

God bless you and your mom. You exemplify excellence on television and we are proud to call you Jamaican.

Respectfully,
Marcella V. Holson

I am sure the trip was her best mothers day give ever given. I was born in Scotland in 1947, immigrated to this country in l950. Ohio has been our home. I have been back several times but after my grandmothers passing I went to her home. Another family is now living there. I wanted to walk up to the door and introduce myself. In this day and age that was not a good idea so I just took some photos and just stood and cried. It was so emotional. There is something about our roots that we long for. I am so glad you and your mother got to experience the trip together. I really enjoy you and Campbell together on the show. However in 1996, we organized a grand family reunion in Jamaica with over 200 relatives from the U.S., U.K., Canada, and of course, Jamaica. I was able to visit the graves of my grandparents and many other relatives in Albert Town, Trelawney Parish. Prior to her death, my mother asked me to ensure that her parents' graves wre maintained and I have considered it an honor to meet her request.

More recently, as the child of Jamaicans, I learned that I qualified by Jamaican citizenship by descent. I did so, to honor my parents, grandparents and great grandparents and --- I'm proud to tell you -- I am now a dual citizen - of Jamaica and the U.S. and am also the proud possessor of both a U.S. and Jamaican passports.

Hello Mr Holt,
I appreciate your recognition of the Rich Jamaican Heritage you have, and how blessed you your mom are to experience it. As you may know, now, Jamaica is a very diverse and beautiful place.
Many families have extended relatives all around the world. What is needed is more connectivity programs like yours to get families in touch with their heritage.

I am a Jamaican. I've three daughters, whom I raised to embrace both cultures (Jamaican & American).
They enjoyed the visits, foods, and their relatives.
There are many Jamaican families like yours, who need to make the connection. It is important for preservation of our diverse cultures and DNA. We should never forget our footprints in the sand of time, don't let the tide of time wash our precious heritage away. The Jamaican culture has been very influential for centuries around the Globe.

Thank you Mr Holt, may you and your family have a wonderful Mother's Day. Please continue the good work.

However, neither of us have been to Jamaica. The realization that my love for my heritage stemmed from mentally drawn connections instead of a physical one became clear when my father took quite ill recently. My father is the only tie I have to the history book in which I (and my son) will add its latest chapter. I am excited and inspired by your story. I would normally watch you on Sundays and for some reason, I did not want to head to the gym at 7am so I sayed in bed. I was so happy to know your story. It bought tears to my eyes and pride and joy as I watched. I was born in JA in 1962 and came to the US at 4 yrs. My family is from Mandeville and Sav as I'm told. I too am of Scottish, African & East Indian decent. I believe migration takes you away from not just your homeland but your history. I happy that you were able to share that experience with your mother. I have been reading and connecting with my family history thanks to my two daughters interest in there family history and the island that their mother was born. Thank you for sharing.

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Mr Holt My wife and I discovered jamacia 33 yrs ago on our honeymoon and hav been going back ever since because of how friendly and nice the people are. I called my mom with tears in my eyes to tell her to watch as well. Us Jamaican's are so proud of our heritage and of each other. I was so happy to see us presented in a positive light.
I am from Manchester not to far from the location where Lester's grandmother grew up. To see my home, my yard, on international TV absolutely filled me with pride.
No matter where we end up the the world, Jamaicans will always be Jamaican. We must keep our culture strong for our descendants.

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Welcome home Lester...nuff respeck.

I thoroughly enjoyed your piece about the visit to Jamaica with your mom. My parents are of East Indian descent and were both born and raised in Jamaica. They have been in the U.S. for 40 years and reside in Sacramento (Yes, I went to CSU, Sacramento, too)!! Your piece brought back memories when I went to the cemetary in Kingston to find the stones of my grand and great grandparents. I felt for you mom when she saw your grandmother's house. It is so nice when you can go back again. Out of many, we are one people. By the way, nice touch with the patties (I can totally relate to this)!!

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Hello Lester

In 1967, after I graduated, my mother treated me to a trip to Jamaica. Was I surprised, at the attitude towards education and pride in culture that I witnessed. I was also, impressed by the variety of shades of color

I was truly touched. A great programme, and a great showcase of our Jamaican heritage. The Herons and Wilsons are very proud of their heritage, and thank you both for assisting to keep the Jamaican heritage alive.

Lester's mother, June, is the descendant of Captain Alexander Woodburn Heron, JP, and Jessy Heron, both of Wigton plantation. In additon to Wigton, he was the owner of 18 other plantations in Manchester including Shooter's Hill, Williamsfield, Kendall, Russell Place, Glasgow, Chudleigh, Great Valley, Canoe Valley, among others, and Barbican Pen in St. Andrew.
Captain Heron was the son of Alexander Heron, and nephew of Robert Heron, of Wigtownshire, Galloway, Scotland, and later of Wigton Plantation, South Manchester, Jamaica.

She is the great-granddaughter of Mrs. Frances Eliza Heron Wilson, Captain Heron's daughter.

Captain Heron was involved in pimento and coffee plantations and shipment of both products overseas.
All descendants of Alexander Heron, Robert Heron and Captain Alexander Heron, his siblings, Anna Maria Heron McCatty of Montego Bay; Frances Catherine Heron Woodburn of Scotland, and George Robert Heron of Jamaica are welcome to attend the August 2008 Reunion in Mandeville, Jamaica.

Did you know that Doctor's Cave in Montego Bay was on lands owned by Anna Maria Heron McCatty and later her son, Dr. Alexander George McCatty"?

Did you know that the mountain top of the Shooter's Hioll plantation where Captain Heron is buried is now called "Heron Hill"?

Did you know that Gil Scott-Heron, the famous Jazz musician is a descendant of Captain Alexander Woodburn Heron of Jamaica?

Come and discover more of your family history at the 2008 Reunion.

Again thanks, Lester and June.

I am sure that this was a very nostalgic trip for your mother, and I am so happy that you were able to share those precious mements with her. Even though the program was specialized, will it ever be repeated? I hope so, as I would certainly like to see it in its entirety.
Hopefully, this will not be your last trip to Jamaica. If and when you return, I suggest that you visit the adjoining parishes of St.Elizabeth and Westmoreland. The "Old World Charm" still exists, ever though the coastal areas are touristized.

God bless you for the Mother's Day treat to your Mom.

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Mr. Holt, This is a great story with a nice change of pace to the usual depressing and sad stories we often here. I am a devout NBC Today viewer, so I watch you and Campbell every weekend morning, unfortunately due to it being Mother's Day, I was of course was on the phone, so tuned in late. However, from the little I saw I could tell that it was a very touching and enjoyable story. Is it possible to purchase a copy of the tape?
I am sure you and your entire family celebrated a beautiful Mother's Day.

It is such a beautiful island, its peoples so warm and hospitable and humourous; and a place to hold dear in our hearts. The segment was emotional for all of us and created so many questions which my parents were able to answer. It was so wonderful to learn of a part of my family history that I was unaware of. Thank you for such an inspiring tribute to our family legacy.

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

Mr.Holt, Thank you for showing the world Jamaica, Its a blessing that we do have people like you who want desperatly to know of your heritage. Welcome home!! The Herons, Somervilles and Wilsons were thrilled to have you both in Jamaica. A very beautiful show... The programme highlighted some of our Jamaican heritage so that the world could see some positive sides of Jamaica, instead of the usual depressing stories of crime. Firstly, over the years, another Heron descendant, Diana McIntyre-Pike of Astra Hotel in Mandeville has spoken of Heritage tourism. The programme higlighted the possibility of a new brand of tourism for Jamaica especially the parish of Manchester: HERITAGE TOURISM. Secondly, your programme highlighted the another positive of Jamaica -- Out of many races, one people. Thirdly, I was glad you all got the opportunity to taste and enjoy the "Tastee" patties and the "Juici" patties.
Judging from the wonderful comments on this BLOG, your trip will encourage many other perons with Jamaican ancestry to make a trip home. Hope you both will come again for a longer visit and attend the August 2008 Reunion at the Mandeville Hotel and Astra Hotel, Mandeville, Jamaica. Keep up the good work, June and Lester. Congrats on the promotion, Lester.

My Mom passed away 3 years ago immediately following Mother's Day, and the loss is still so heavy in my heart.Among my man cousins we have had 3 or 4 starts and stops with the family tree, so I am sharing your story with aall my relatives with the hope that we can really get it on'. I am born American as were my parents and grandparents, but live in my adopted home , Jamaica for 20 years ,Certainly can relate to the history of migration. My jamaican born husband has so many stories regarding jazz music in Jamaica and tales of growing up in the 40s and 50s, maybe this will inspire him to write about it , as I(and other friends} often encourage him to do.. Hope you do more on this ..Perhaps a series..Our ROOTS tell us who we are...... I am sincerely thrilled, elated and awe-strucked that you took the time out of your very busy schedule to travel to Jamaica to review some of your roots. As the Jamaican national motto ( Out of many one people) suggests, we Jamicans like to think that we are all one family indeed. So keep your eyes open for the cousins you already acquired. Yah Mon!
This might spur a few of us here to travel back to our roots, review the graves and tombs, make a cookout of curried goat, ackee and cod fish and mannish water which in the long run will assist the troubled economy the island seem to be undergoing.
Please let me hear about these suggestions.
I left the island thrity-seven years ago and Mon, it may be time to go home.
So happy to hear of your trip. Happy Belated Mother's Day to your Mom, a very special lady.

Lester Holt: To Jamaica with Mom

C.
