Ann continually states that they are climbing in terrible conditions and at the worst time of year. Again this is not true. The visual evidence confirms that they are enjoying decent conditions that are oftentimes far worse and much colder, regardless of the time of year. Finally she goes to great lengths to promote the fact she's carrying a twenty pound pack. I'll bet that outside of when the lens is trained on her, she is not carrying anything. The guides are fastidious in their insistence that the porters carry everything, and they would never permit an ordinary climber, let alone a celebrity, to carry their own pack. In conclusion it's a shame that Ann feels compelled to sensationalize her efforts. They undoubtedly deserve our acclamation but she should be required to report honestly and candidly. Anything less undermines the veracity of the Today show and the NBC news network.

Views from the mountain trail

Wow, Ann, you ROCK!!

Views from the mountain trail

Ann, Dont give up ! You can do this! It is difficult an painful but the end result will be worth it. I'm pullin' for ya!

Views from the mountain trail

You go Ann, I can't believe that you are actually doing some of the things you do...Take it easy.

Views from the mountain trail

Ann, What does your husband and children think about these challenging and what could be dangerouse trips you have takenl ie: Antartica and now Mt. Many years ago, my Navy spouse and I climbed Mt. Fuji while we were stationed in Japan. I had been in a Navy hospital stateside some months earlier for surgery and was on a ward with a lovely Japanese war-bride who was severly disabled due to her Rheumatoid Arthritis. I had RA since a child, but was in much better health at the time. I told her of my plans to climb Mt. Fuji and she said that she had always wanted to climb, but was unable to. She said for all Japanese people it was a sacred thing to do, to climb Mt. Fuji. I told her I would do it for both of us. Well, Ann, it was truly a difficult thing, but I did it with the help of a loving, supportive husband. All the while, I kept saying this mantra "Etsuko, For You. Etsuko, For You." And of course, I asked God to help me. I will never forget sunrise on Mt. Fuji, and my greater purpose in climbing the volcano. The Obelisk on Mt. Fuji reads, "May Peace Prevail On Earth" in several languages. Ann, in addition to all of the good advice and encouragement you are getting, I would say to remember your greater purpose for doing this. May God truly bless you and your TODAY show buddies for bringing the Global Warming challenges and risks into everyone's consciousness. Thank You!

Views from the mountain trail

wow! im so happy u are taking this journey up Mt Kilimanjaro. the summit is absolutely breathtaking! i just returned from Kilimanjaro myself. if it is true that the glacier may be gone by as early as 2020, the urgency to experience it's beauty is growing, and those few souls that can truly appreciate it may want to travel there very soon. Not only is Tanzania a fantastic country with welcoming people, but the mountain is a huge source of much needed income for the locals. I took what was called the Western Approach, a modified version of the Western Breach, which was closed in 2oo6 after three trekkers died in a rock slide. Has the original route been re-opened? If you drink gallons of water, eat everything they put in front of you, and always go pole pole, you will do fine. At least one night make yourself get out of your tent in the wee small hours to see the beautiful night sky and stars. The stillness is unbelievable, and you really do feel like you can reach up and touch the stars. You will find that once you are home, your heart is still on the mountain. Don't stop till you make it to the top. Have a great time.

Views from the mountain trail

I agree with Alistair, it's a shame that they are not quite accurate and overdramatizing. The majority of the guides and porters are not Massai they are Chagga. Ann and crew are definitely not eating "local" food the way the porters do, the climbers i.e. "guests" eat delicious food recognizable to any westerner. Every day we had popcorn and tea/chocolate/coffee at the end of the hike before dinner, peanut butter and warm soup as appetizers and either chicken or meat and often pasta for dinner. Delicious (to be fair she did say it was tasty, it's just not exotic as she led viewers to believe). The oxygen is not standard for most climbs NO ONE climbs Kili with oxygen except some lame Japanese tourists. Please also discuss that many scientists think an important real reason that ice is melting is because Kili, like the glaciers where Al is, are on top of active volcanoes so a lot of the melting is due to geothermal energy coming from within it's important to understand how geology works. It's not a bad climb until the last day so there is no "struggling" early on. That being said good luck to everyone it will be wonderful when you make it, just keep the exaggerations down or you will discourage others from climbing and that would be a shame.

Views from the mountain trail

Hello.
Good luck Ann!I am liming,It was a challenging and magical experience. one step at a time and pole pole (go slowly) The view from the top is well worth it. You are fortunate to be able to do so. I was a part of a grop of 8 climbers from Raleigh, NC that went for the Kili adventure in Jan. 2001. Only 2 of us were able to summit. Two were hosptialized from altitude sickness at Fischer Camp(west side)12,300 feet. Four others were forced to descend at Arrow Glacier 15,300 feet. The prehistoric looking Senecio trees are favorites of mine. I summited and was above 18,000 feet for 24 hours. Because all cellular regeneration in the body stops above that altitude my body suffered tremendous muscle wasting. It took 6 years for me to rebuild my body. Recovery is tougher than the climb. All of my group is healthy now. Eat protein and weight train as soon as you get home even though you will be exhausted. The unsung heros of the amazing trek are the local porters. I hope the TODAY show will take time to highlight and shower praise on these dedicated climbers. My group started with 50 porters for 8 tourists! I thought that the village had come out to give us a send off on the trailhead. I was shocked to learn it was our personal porter team just for us to get our stuff to the top and food for 9 nine days. I am forever grateful to Benhadad Mality, expedition leader, who's humor, singing, and "take diomox NOW" got me to the summit! Ann and crew, do this for those who can't. You can make it.

Views from the mountain trail

Ann,
You're our "I can do it" TV hero. You can read about journey on my website, www.fatwomanonthemountain.com. I was also featured in the October issue of Self magazine.

You're in the thick of it now -- the very unglamourous part of trekking, fighting the altitude to achieve great heights. I often compare the mountain to my own weight loss journey -- It's slow, and hard-going but if you keep trudging along, eventually you'll get there.

Take it easy now. I had a huge headache at about 15,000 feet. I rested and was fine after that. But most importantly, listen to your guides they know what they are doing. Your summit on Kilimanjaro can be anywhere you want it to be.

I'm returning to climb Kilimanjaro in December 2009, as the finale to my Save the World Diet effort. Each month during the New Year, I'm taking on a physical challenge for charity (from the Penguin Plunge for Special Olympics in February to the Flying Pig Marathon for the American Heart Association in May) with the hopes of by the New Year I'll be healthier and the world will be a better place.

I want you to know that I think your reporting on the mountain has been fantastic and your progress thus far has been amazing for only three weeks of training. (I had six months to prepare!) Your reporting and efforts everyday -- and especially on Kilimanjaro -- make the world a better place.

I'm leaving you with a mantra helped me on the mountain, it's something my yoga instructor Reina always says: "Keep up and you'll be kept up."
Views from the mountain trail

With trails beings already used, do you have to look where before your step? I'm guessing most people leave there feces without burying it. Did the NBC crew bring a shovel to bury theirs? Does Ann have to ask the others look the other way while she finds a rock or bush
to get behind?

Views from the mountain trail

Jambo, and "Ashante sana" (Thank you) NBC Today Show for bringing us such exciting information from amazing destinations! My husband is from Mombasa Kenya and relocated to the States in July 08. Each time I would fly to see him, the flight from Nairobi to Mombasa, you could always see the majestic Mt.Kilimanjaro out the side of the window of the plane. It is my dream to not necessarily climb the great Mt., but to at least stand at its foot and look up! We hope that everyone takes a closer look at Africa and its many wonders. Ive been to S.Africa and Zambia. Victoria Falls is another great wonder. Africa the holy land and its people deserves our help and attention. Help build "Wells" in Africa remote areas. Fight against the wars in the Congo, Somalia, Zambabwe etc...Africa is our friend, they are our neighbor. Thanks for bringing awareness NBC--we should report from other countries within Africa. Many people don't know that Egypt is in Africa. Yes, where Moses walked. You can take a "Bus" from Israel to Egypt. Education is KEY. Knowledge Is Power. The beauty of all these locations highlighted in these NBC segments. The Bible says that the "eyes" have not scene nor the ears have heard what Jesus has for us. Umbwe which is reserved for those with previous altitude experience and mountaineering background). Rest assured, the crew is taking their time on the mountain to ensure proper acclimatization (they are spending 8 nights/9days on the mountain). Ann’s colleagues and viewers of the show expressed their concerns about the crew’s safety; something that we take very seriously. Aside from the massive support crew (including 2 trip leaders, 5 assistant guides and 2 logistics managers) who are trained in high altitude medicine and WFR (amongst other certifications in which they receive training for on a bi-annual basis), we bring oxygen, gamow bags, and medical supplies. We monitor each client’s health twice daily above 13,000ft using medical devices and routine questions/check ups. Needless to say, our friend Ann and her crew are well looked after! In addition, they are eating well to nourish their bodies to maximize their summit success. This is why we have a 98% summit success rate on the mountain.

November is the beginning of the rainy season in E. Africa, however, people should keep in mind that mountains, especially ones of this size, tend to create their own weather. By viewing the show and receiving updates from our office in Arusha, I’d say that the climbers are experiencing average weather this time of the year. At Arrow Glacier (16,000ft), they camp just at the base of the challenging Western Breach (the crux of the climb). The Western Breach is roughly 2 miles in distance with an altitude gain of roughly 2,500ft (takes 6-8 hours). They will reach the crater floor in the afternoon in time of view and explore around the receding glaciers at the “Roof of Africa”. On Friday, they will summit at 19,340ft, and descend back down to 10,000ft at Mweka Camp for their final celebratory night. This should be lots of fun!

I also wanted to address one particular blog about how this climb has been sensationalized for television: it has not. Having climbed Kilimanjaro myself (and other mountains), I know that everyone’s mountain experience varies dramatically (altitude and pain affects people in different ways). The Western Breach is the toughest/steepest and most direct approach to the crater floor (without any technical climbing). Not all routes take you to the crater floor, in fact, most climbing companies bypass the crater floor and head directly for the summit with the alpine start. Our crew will actually spend a night in the crater floor and summit the following morning. In addition, you can rest assured that Ann is not carrying a pack just for the cameras; in fact, all of our climbers carry their own day pack with additional clothing layers, water, snacks etc. This is not staged.

Lastly, I’d like to comment about our mountain staff. We hire a diverse staff including the Chagga and Maasai. In fact, the Maasai are happy to work for us and all of our staff are very well looked after (we have the highest standard for staff care on the mountain). I think times are different from when some of our climbers last climbed and I’d like to assure all of the Today Show viewers that the story is not being sensationalized or facts manipulated just for TV.

If you’d like to climb Kilimanjaro with Mountain Travel Sobek, please visit us at www.mtsobek.com
Views from the mountain trail

Ann you are the best! what a trooper...NBC take care of her and the team...She is awesome.

Views from the mountain trail

You can do it!
