Texas, Florida, Indiana and Massachusetts have the huge and expensive atom-smashers needed to generate protons. The protons give up less damaging energy on entering the pelvis and expend all their power on the prostate itself, so you have less damage to your urinary tract or bowels. It's rare and costs more, but proton therapy is superior and will be much more widely available in the near future when more cyclotrons are built. I'm about half-way through my 40 treatment schedule at Mass. General in Boston and feel Bob Marckini, George and thousands of other men have made the very best decision possible.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

R. A year later, after wearing pads and diapers, I opted at the encouagement of a local Urologist to have a male sling implant. He said I would be back to normal in a very few days. Wrong!! I wore a catheter for approximately 3 months before they removed it. Then back to male pads and diapers for several months. I finally saw another Urologist in Arlington Texas (a Godsend) who ran many test and found the male sling had been improperly inserted and had rubbed a hole in my urthrea. He immediately (within 2 days) removed the sling and I had to wait and see doctors for 1 year to let this "botched job" heal. On July 28, 2007, my doctor in Arlington inserted another male sling and within 3 days, I was almost dry. I will never be completely dry but oh my what a difference. Another downfall doctors dont seem to tell you when the prostate is removed, all sexual activity is over. There are some items which can be used to temporarily enhance your ability but that does not interest me in the least. It appears Mr. Lewis, you have had great success and I applaud your decision. Have a great life!

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

George, I am a Loma Linda Aumni of 2006.......What a great experience at LLMU, as you well know..You went to the right place.
My PSA was 4.8 and is currently 0.9.
Thanks to LLMU and many discussions with Bob Marckini.
As he would say, Lower PSA's to all.
All the best

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Mr. Lewis, I watched your report about your prostate cancer experiences on the Today show this morning. My husband, Rupert Wentworth, was diagnosed with prostate cancer 13 1/2 years ago. He wanted to do proton therapy ( he was a chemist and understand the principles of external, internal, and proton radiation), but because there were only two facilities at the time, he opted for brachytherapy at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Unfortunately, that procedure did not prove successful and in 2000 his cancer metastasized. By this time we had read and read and became convinced that a wholistic approach involving not only exercise and spiritual and emotional support, but also diet was the best way to deal with cancer. We went to the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care in Evanston which offers conventional approaches along with the diet, etc. Rupert had intermittent hormone blockade and adhered to the diet and exercise regimens prescribed by Block. For seven years, Rupert lived a full life, even though he had been told two times that he had a year to live. Last February 2007, he was bicycling in Florida, but sadly, by April he was becoming symptomatic and became weakened by various treatments. He died on 5 September 2007.

Yes , Rupert did die, but he and I and our friends are thoroughly convinced that his diet, exericse, and attitude allowed him to be fully engaged in life until last May. More and more research points to the importance of a good diet and lays fault at the door of the typical American diet for most of the cancers. I know that doctors rarely emphasize diet and some even scoff at the notion that what we eat affects our whole being. But, Dr. Block believes it, Rupert, the skeptical chemist believed it, and now Johns Hopkins has even acknowledged the importance of things considered "alternative" in the treatment of cancer. I hope that as you continue to live and appreciate life, that you might investigate all of the work being done relative to diet and disease. Challenging the dietary mores of Americans is not easy, but our health depends on it. Rupert would say so.

By the way, Rupert wrote a book about his life with metastatic cancer
called CAUGHT WITH MY PANTS DOWN. The small section about treatments is outdated, but the bulk of the book is informative, inspirational, and humorous.

Best wishes as you continue on the road of dealing with cancer. May you have good health.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

My comment is about the girl in the GREEN dress on today show.... PLEASE get her a bra she may as well not have anything on! I wish you all the best and thanks for sharing your experience and information with the public. I just wanted to comment on one item in that the Radiation therapists who you mentioned as a friendly team of technicians are actually technologists. I am a radiologic technologist performing CT, MR and Mammography. I am registered and credentialed both in California and nationally with an education and training by an accredited program. We are technologists because of that. To title us as technicians is incorrect and implies that we just push a button on a machine without any thought to what we do. I wanted to educate you and the public about that as we have many states in this country who do not require that education, training and credentials that we have in California. I went the radical prostatectamy route. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 57. My Gleason score was 7 out of 10. Sure I was scared about the side effects but I wanted to live a long time to see my grand kids and I wanted the cancer out of my body. I went to a top physician at NY Columbia Presbyterian who felt the same way. My bladder control was great within about a month. My sexual sensation was not so I had a penile implant which works great all the time. All prostate cancer patients should know this option. There is no discomfort with the implant and I reach orgasm like everyone else, I just do not have any semum because the prostate gland is gone. Since I am not having any more children it does not matter to me.

If you are satisfied that is all that matters. Again I wish you all the best.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

KIM SIMMONS, ST. But I think the real lesson is to ask a lot of questions and don't assume that the doctors know all the answers.

In my case, at 62 the doctors said my PSA should be in the 5-to-6 range and my test came back at 18.5!

They said ominously that it had to be prostate cancer and scheduled me for a prostate biopsy. They took 21 samples and found no cancer in all but one, which contained "transitional" bladder cells.

They then did a cystoscopy (the most painful procedure I have ever been through) but found no bladder cancer. But by this time, my prostate was so enlarged that urine flow was completely blocked, the bladder becoming distended and I started going into kidney failure.

Because of earlier double-hernia/hydrocele surgery (which started this whole thing) they could not perform prostate surgery until I had sufficiently recovered from that. I had to wear a Foley catheter for about ten days, then to self-catheterize every few hours for about six weeks.

Now for the good news: the prostate surgery was successful, they removed most of it and found cancer cells in only one percent of the tissue. They believe they got it all.

My bladder control is now fine and, with one exception, my sexual function is normal. The exception is what they call the "dry orgasm".

When I asked my doctor later why he hadn't mentioned that I'd have no semen, he said he couldn't imagine at my age why I would care.

It probably would not have changed my course of treatment had I known, but it's a reminder that doctors can be awfully arrogant about other people's lives. Ask a lot of questions and do online research.

All in all, I was very lucky. It was quite an ordeal but, as they say, that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

And no one has been able to explain that off-the-chart PSA. It turns out the test is only about 25% accurate!

p.s. You won't remember me, but we met at Mojave airport where we were both covering the flight of SpaceShipOne.
George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Jon S. My sister utilized proton beam radiation in Boston for chondro sarcoma. Loma Linda's machine was "not working" at this time. I went with her and she served as a guide for Boston right after her treatment. Sadly, she recently had a craniotomy (2 frontal lobe tumors) and suffered a stroke during this surgery. I had no family history or symptoms. My PSA went from 2.6 to 5.8 in one year and a Gleason score of 7. My Dad was diagnsed and the urologist did the same thing recommended and even PUSHED for surgery. Then in passing mentioned that HIS father had Proton ( so it was good enough for the surgeons dad?) mode, with PSA tests every three months. It is getting close to the point where additional treatment options will need to be considered.

This is getting long, so I will try to wrap it up. In the last 12 years, I have learned many things about prostate cancer, and even more about myself. The two most important are 1) never give up hope, and 2) which you touched on in your report: Like you, I would never have made it through this without the love of a good woman. My wife has been by my side through all of the ups and downs (some of the downs were VERY down). She has been my personal angel.

Hold your friends close, and your wife closer, and never give up hope.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Hi Mr Geoge im sorry that your going trough your situasion but i can teel that you are very strong and tuff person and im pretty sure that god is looking out for you and your going to come out just fine like a brand new man take care you and your family god bless everyone

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

DEar George: This is Jimmy Miller. I had a radical prostatectomy in January of 2004 at age 61 with a PSA of 4.13 and a Gleeson of 6. Today I am healthy, running 30+ miles a week and trying to raise the level of awareness about Prostate Cancer and overcome the stigma of incontinence and impotence that permeates the disease. I run an antique car show on Long Island New York at which we provide free PSA testing and donate the money raised to free PSAs to be offered here on Long Island.
To date (2006/2007) at the show we have done 270 PSA screens and caught six elevated and sent these men on to their doctors for further testing and evaluation. Anyone who would care to start heir own show or participate in my show please log on to www.licruizinforacure.com and see what we are all about. If you are over fifty five, this will also bring back memories of the fun days of the fifties and sixties with the nostalgia of the old cars.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

George-

I too was diagnosed with early stage prostate cancer. As an oncologist, I was knowlegable enough to know that most men with early prostate cancer don't die of the disease. I elected to have robotic surgery. I was home the next day, at work within 5 days, and have minimal side effects (meaning erectile dysfunction is not a problem). I am curious as to why you would choose a procedure that required 45 days with no certainty that all the cancer was irradiated.

-Steve

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Congratulations, George, on a great story. I was so thakful that you have had your treatments and am continuing to do well my prayers are with you. I lost my father to the horrible death of Prostate Cancer. He went from a strong, proud big man , to just wasting away. He was 6'5" and weighed his highest at about 265. When he passed away he could't have weighed more than 100 lbs. I ask that every male reading this story to please go and have a prostate check when they are recomended by their physicians. Trust me a few minutes of being "uncomfortable" is nothing to what could be. All five of us children as well as my mother stood around his bed and watched him take his last breath. In a way it was almost a relief because we knew he was not in anymore pain. I had prostate treatment five years ago and only told my wife and son. It was hard to talk about, I think a lot of men keep silent. I elected to have external radiation plus seeds. My PSA was 6.5 and Gleason was also 7. I had a early psa bounce and then my psa has been on the way down. It took five years for my psa to reach undetectable... now I want to talk about it and tell the world. We all need to let it out and not hold back like I did. Low psa to all. Will

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Dear George,
From someone currently receiving proton treatment for prostate cancer at Loma Linda, I want to say thank you for sharing your experience. It was great to see some of my technologists in the video. You were definitely the talk of our Wednesday support meeting tonight (and yes, we do laugh a lot). Being here is a great experience.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

I have been diagnosed prostate cancer, my worry is what kind of treatment is available for me as I'm diabetic and with a pace maker with defibilator. I'm 63 years old.

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

The one thing that I wnat to warn men about radiation, such as George Lewis had, is that in the event it fails, there is no option for surgery. Your ptostate site becomes toast! The Proton therapy George had also takes many weeks to complete...9-10!
All at Loma Linda.

The treatment protocol that a man decides on should not be decided on lightly. Age, general health, tumor size, whether it has spread, grade,Gleason score all play a role in the treatment chosen. I elected to have laparascopic surgery and my PSA has remained at .10.

Men must also remember that surgeons want to surge and the radiation docs want to: you guessed it...radiate you.

Use your gut and your wife's intuition. It will help you make the right decision!

Buy the book: So You're Having Prostate Surgery, get three pair of PJ bottoms, some adult diapers, bed mats and a tube of deadning jell of some kind for the area around the catheter where it goes into the penis.

You might have incontinence and you might not. Buy a few supplies for it just in case. The older you are, the more problems you will have getting an erection.
It takes time and it is partly a mental thing as well. Don't sweat it. You can take pills, shots or even have an implant.

I do two Prostate Cancer TV shows a year with three Santa Barbara Sansome Clinic Urologists and speak publicly on the subject to organizations.

Ernest Salomon

You may contact me ernstsal@aol.com with any questions. My phone is 805 565 3025

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

George, you are so blessed to have found it early, and I know for a fact at the stage they found it, you will be just fine, my husbands was found at 50, psa was 265, was given one year to live and lived six, if only they had given the psa earlier, they would have found it, he had no symptoms at all until it was to late, headaches, backaches, his prostate was ok by physical exam, I write this on here so other men can read this and not wait till they are 50, his doctors said that it should be given earlier. he had no one in his family with any cancer. But when I read yours I was so happy that it was found at this stage, I know so much about it now that you will live many years and will die of something else. God was just not ready to take you quite yet, He has used you for a purpose, and I think this may be one of them, you will bring alot of attention to this and this is what I pray for, there is not enough talk out there about this and I tell every man now that I meet PLEASE GET THE PSA TEST AND NOT WAIT TILL 50!! More and more men are getting it younger. George you will be in my prayers please know that and you must go to USTOO.COM it is wonderful. and also PROSTATE POINTERS.COM , GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY, SANDRA , ARLINGTON, TEXAS

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

Dear George:
Very well done. I too have prostate cancer and consider myself quite blessed to be able to receive proton treatment at Loma Linda. It seems like last week that I began the process, but I've already completed 25 treatments. The time goes quickly here. It was good to see you focus on all elements of Making Man Whole (Loma Linda's motto). Yes, eating right, getting plenty of exercise, and reducing emotional stress are all key to the healing process. As someone told me the other day, "doctors treat the disease, but God heals the body." Like you, I too have felt blessed to be here, and know that I'm not at Loma Linda by chance. Most men who receive the dreaded news from their urologist that they have prostate cancer are NEVER told about proton therapy treatment. Is this an oversight on the doctor's part, or does he not know about this type of therapy? Probably both. However, urologists earn their living by performing surgery, not sending patients to other treatment centers. As soon as I return home, I plan to make an appointment with my doctor and share my experiences with proton beam therapy. In the meantime, I'm anxious to somehow obtain a copy of your interview and include it with presentations in my community, and to also give my doctor a copy. Again, George, the segment was well-done. Kudos to NBC

George Lewis's Fight Against Cancer

CHARLES L.
