I think the story was very touching. I am very upset that David would make fun of the story not once but several times. I am not sure why the Today Show would do a story just to have the "guest" host make fun of it. I would have thought better of the program that alway delivers great stories as well, as at least on air, anchors that care about the news and stories that they are telling. I not so sure David is a good mix when Matt is away if he thinks his duties includes taking something that means something to someone and have so much fun at their expense, I just hope that the men in the story were not watching to see something so important to them turn in to a joke. I think the Today Show should rethink what kind of program they want to be. Give David a pen a parting gift and find someone who repects the peoples life they are reporting on, seeing how the pen was more important than peoples feelings. Thanks

inspite of the comments by susan from Freeport, Il., I was very touched by the video and to wondered why we haven't heard about this escapade before. what a touching remake of "Elsie". I too am wondering what happened to the young men who raised Christian as a cub and in their heart had to let him go free. Kinda like raising children. My husband was playing suduko when I said can we flip to "you tube" because they have been talking about this lion for over an hour and I was getting anxious. He did as I bidded and I have watched all the segmented videos. Each and everyone has brought tears to our eyes. Thank you "TODAY" for bringing attention to heart warming news. The news is so filled with tragedy such as the kidnapping of that ever so cute little girl in Florida to the conflicts of war that this warms our hearts in a time when our hearts need a little assurance. That being said I would like to mention that my son, Michael, who is 40, is now in Irag leaving behind a wife with 3 children and another on the way. My husband's only son is in Afghanistan. so we are always thankful for some heartfelt news. By the way thanks to the internet, which we are novices at best appreciate the input. we are working the internet as best we can and we love it.

The video footage was shared with me yesterday by an old zoo colleague. It is touching and should be appreciated. Many people have dedicated their lives to learning about and caring for wild animals -- most of them rescued from a cruel and unfortunate fate. It was George Adamson, "Father Of the Lions" from Born Free (Elsa) that accepted Christian into his pride and helped him on the road to freedom. There is a DVD called Christian the lion, that I highly recommend , it is suitable for the whole family . It is a film that documents Christian the lion's journey :) Christian stars as himself.
There is also an old out of print book A Lion Called Christian, very hard to find but, such a great read.
The DVD can be found on ebay as well as on Amazon.

ge pa - if you ask Sigfreid or Roy, they will tell you their cat was trying to 'rescue' Roy from himself while he was having a stroke on stage and the the bulk of the damage ocurred when people tried to stop the cat from getting Roy offstage. They truly believe the cat had no intention of hurting Roy. And there is always the lady who rescued Leo and who visits him regularly (smart girl, she greets him with a gate between them but he still wraps his paws around her shoulders with his claws inhibited.) I found the most amazing thing about the Christian video was that the female lion, who was not raised by humans, allowed the humans to pet her.

I have to be the voice of reality here and agree with Ge'Pa'- this is the exception- not because of the lion but because of us humans. Normally, the "exotic pet", which in reality is a wild animal, is not nearly so fortunate as Christian. Once they outgrow their "cuteness" and become the adult animal they are, their owners aren't as well off as these 2 guys financially and they get sold to a circus and tortured to do tricks for human laughter(like the lion that attacked Sigreid and Roy) or end up being "euthanized" or kept in a too small cage,and left to half starve to death outdoors. Just seeing that the lion remembered the two guys should help us all understand that animals have feelings and memories and we should treat them with the respect and care they deserve.

this is interesting. Incidentally I watched this several weeks ago while browsing on u-tube...the whole playing on the church lawn was not there, nor the documentary thing, nor the corny Houston soundtrack...it just briefly stated that these guys had set it off in the wild after they'd had him as a cub. they went to go visit and it recognized them when they came back.

you dont see the faces of the guys in the beginning - only in the last part of the video.

seems more to the story now than before...as well as all the mush about the lion coming to the camp the nite before after not seeing him for 3 months...

little expansion for hype??

I do love that last clip with the lion, but please - keep it real.

After waiting 1-1/2 hours after the initial segment was announced to be coming 'next' - I was moved to tears by this old footage. It does tug at your heartstrings. I then went to 'you tube' and watched the next 10 videos of 'Christian, the Lion Who Thought He Was People.' Amazing! Ace and John must now be in their 50s. I would also like to see a follow up story on them and hear their story first hand. What about that 'Today?' After waiting for the story to air, I was extremely disappointed in David Gregory's laughter (I normally enjoy him). He took that moving, sweet sequence and made it a joke. It was NOT appropriate for this story. But thanks for airing it - I'd like to see it again on your show - sans the laughter and inappropriate comments - Meredith's tears mirrored my own!

I have seen and re-seen this video so many times and it makes me cry everytime. As Christian approaches cautiously at first and then recognizes his old 'pride,' you can see that recognition in his gait as he bounds towards the two men. For anyone who has a cat, you can recognize the 'marking' that Christian is making as he rubs his face all over his human friends' faces. He is acknowldeging their position with his family. The obvious joy on the faces of Ace and John was heartwarming.

As for David Gregory, his unfeeling and stupid remarks were uncalled for. So what if Meredith was crying? She is human, with a loving and compassionate heart - something obviously missing in David. If David has pets, they have my sympathy.

However, I wish to address an issue this brings up...exotic animals should not be pets. John and Ace AND Christian were lucky. He was able to make the conversion to living as a wild, successful male lion, with his own pride. Other pet/captive animals are not always so fortunate. Look at the story of Lucy Temerlin, a Chimpanzee who was taught American Sign Language. Her story can be found on the Wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_Temerlin_(chimpanzee). When her human care givers were no longer able to care for her, she was sent to a Chimpanzee rehabilitation center in Gambia. A young Chimpanzee, accustomed to the comforts of living as a human, including a nip of gin, was poached and skinned. Humans had not been her enemies and she died for not knowing to be afraid and cautious. Most animals that have been raised in captivity would find the same fate if 'returned to the wild.' Christian is the exception, not the standard.

I absolutely Loved the "Christian" video on The View. I was so touched that I watched the same thing one hour later on a different channel so I could record it. Then came to work today and what do ya know! It is all over the internet and I had most of the girls here in the office crying showing it to them. its all "real" rent the DVD Christian the lion or read the book by ANthony Bourke "A Lion Called Christian"
The footage of the church is from the documentary/film.
Christain was released into the wild by George Adamson, same man who raised Elsa from Born Free.
There are many clips of Christian on youtube that was taken from the film. The reunion also features George Adamson in the background..he is the one walking towards them at the end older man with shorts.

This was the most beautiful and touching story I have ever seen! I have watched it 3x's today and I've cryed the same, each time. These men are just amazing with how they raised this beautiful animal and what they did for him. If these two can respond, what do they think happened to Christian, since he was never seen again??

To ge 'pa' have you not heard about siegfried & roy's thoughts on the so called 'attack' by their beloved lion. The lion hauled him off to it's cage because she was protecting him because she sensed that he was in danger which he was because he was having a stroke. The only problem was that she didn't realize that her lion teeth would puncture human skin and cause more harm. But you are correct in this story being the exception. It's never a good idea to try and make something wild a pet or to revisit a re-introduced animal.

I was very touched by the video and it was actually the 2nd one I have seen of a lion being reunited with it's care giver. My family had a similar experience in 1964. My father, while on an expedition in South America, brought home a mountain lion cub who was orphaned. Her name was "Cleopatra" and she lived in our home in a suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. I was 5 yrs. old and soon Cleo got to be too big and a bit aggressive in the house. Long story short, we were able to find her a suitable home at a place in central Ohio and when we went to visit her, she did recognize our whole family! Therefore, this story about "Christian" really hits home! Too cool!

What a wonderful story! I truely believe animals can and do bond with people. I worked for a veterinarian for a number of years and one of our clients raised exotic animals. We treated several big cats and they would always remember us, especially the cats that we treated from a young age. We (the technicians) became close to a lioness who spent about 10 days with us. In the mornings she would greet us with paws wrapped around our necks and a big cat kiss! I never felt threatened by her, even though at 9 months old she could have hurt us badly. We learned how to read her moods and always respected her wishes (like not bothering her during her afternoon nap!). I personally don't believe that anyone should own an exotic pet and I'm very glad Christian was successfully returned to the wild, but I'm thankful that I was able to meet and work with these wonderful animals. I'll never forget them.

I have read all the information on this story although I havent actually seen the video (which I will as soon as I get home from work) but it touches my heart. I commend the 2 men for caring for the lion and in loving it as much as they obviously did, realizing its real place was out in the wild. The old saying "if you love something let it go" truly comes into play with this story. It takes people with selfless love to be able to do that. Wow! This story was just so beautiful and amazing. I wish it could be seen by every human on Earth. Perhaps more people need to learn how animals are more like people. Some people can't even love or be loyal. I think that the human race needs to embrace animals and realize they are more than just fur. They have hearts and emotions. Seriously, how do we teach humnakind we are not superior. After all, I think more people could learn to love the way these men and this lion do. This is unforgettable and I certainly hope no one would ever make fun of this. For this is just so remarkable and beautiful. It just shows so much depth and spirit. They say eyes are the windows to your soul and clearly if humankind stopped and looked into the eyes of any animal they would see that soul. We have hunters that kill lions for the rush and fun of it, poachers that are humab scum defined. How can we educate the ignorant and heartless. This video should teach every human that even wild anaimals when given love and loyalty can blossom into amazing family members. Let's all be a voice fort eh voiceless and start to save beautiful animals such as this lion and the millions of others~ We also need to start and change laws in the animals' favor both in America and all around the world.

Odd. This film was shot before the UK required licenses for "exotic" pets and the story has it that many owners let their cats go.
Then they were outlawed completely but since the '60s, people all over Britain have reported "large" cats, when Britain hasn't had an indegenous population of them in thousands of years.
Called ABCs (Alien Big Cats-alien as in foreign, not extraterrestrial), no one has proven their existence.
The most famous of these is the so-called "Black beast of Exmoor" which is credited killing large numbers of livestock.

This video is just amazing. Anyone who doesn't think animals have emotions hasn't spent much time with them.

A few years ago, I watched a documentary about this group of elephants as it migrated from one part of its territory to another. Along the way, the group came across some elephant bones in an area that was what we would call a graveyard. Even without the audio, the group was CLEARLY agitated upon encountering the bones. Also, one of the elephants touched the bones in what we would call a "respectful" and "heartfelt" way. It was very touching.

Another show I watched about animal rescues, involved another elephant that had been a circus elephant and subsequently retired. At the "retirement" home was another elephant a few stalls away. The 2 started making noises at each other and when allowed to interact "greeted" each other as if they knew each other. Unbeknownst to the staff at the time, both elephants had performed together (in a circus I think) 20 years before and had later been separated. After all that time, they still remembered each other.

I also watched a documentary about a group of chimpanzees in the reserve where Jane Goodall did her research. One, a young male, was very close to his mother and remained so even after he "grew up". After she died, he sort of lost all his interest in life and died shortly after his mother.

These are only the stories caught on film or told in books by humans motivated enough to tell them. Does this make them the exception? IMO, The animals are not so different from ourselves.

over the last 30 or so years I have rehabbed probably over 200 animals ranging from snakes to coyotes. The domestics I have often gone back to "visit" after a year or so and with just a few exceptions they have all remembered me. But of the undomesticated varities, I have only two stories of reunion with "wilds" but only because they were both so badly damaged that they could not be re-introduced to the wild, and I was able to visit often to the "ranch" where they now reside with the vet who provided the medical care necessary to get them back on their feet. One was a crow and the other an eaglet that had fallen 30 feet from a cliffside into a tree, where my husband was able to climb up to retrive it. Those experiences alone have always made me feel so blessed to have been just a part in their survival.
But this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an unbeliveable rush that had to have been! It is just even further proof that animals of all kinds retain memories and FEELINGS!!!

This has got to be one of the most awesome Video's on UTube! And the love that those two men had for Christian is unbelieveable because of the danger it could have posed. They really did love this animal and this animal loved them just as much. It's ashame they couldn't have kept going every year to keep in contact with Christian. Pets love there masters. They know who takes good care of them and they don't forget. I will never forget we had a dog named "Butch" and we had to leave it behind with the home dad sold when we moved to Australia from Oklahoma and when we came back and my dad went back to the old home place to see if Butch was there, if he would remember him and he did and he came home with my dad. We lived in Australia for two years before we came back to live in Oklahoma. But this video is just heartbreaking. I know they didn't want to leave Christian alone again but they had too. Maybe it's because my husband,sons and son-in-law have the same kind of humor and they are all sweet-natured animal lovers. I don't know about this. Call me skeptic, call me cynic, but I don't know. For one thing, it's very difficult to raise a predator such as a lion in captivity and then release it into the wild without disaster as a result. A lion's hunting skills are learned from it's elders and honed over a lengthy period. To assume a lion raised in captivity can be set-free as an individual - remember, lions hunt in numbers - and then successfully make its way to the warthog-wildebeest-zebra buffet is a bit far-fetched. Second, most prides are headed by a brotherhood of very large aggressive males. Typically, two to four brothers are ostrasized by their father from their birth pride as they approach sexual maturity, stay together as bachelors until they reach their prime, then physically take over a distant pride by fighting off or even killing that pride's aging males. These alpha males typically weigh in the neighborhood of 425-450 lbs. and almost always have heavy dark manes (lioness' prefer heavily maned males over males with sparse manes). So if the story as presented is true, then Christian the friendly lion defies all of the following odds: 1) after honing his hunting skills on a soccer ball, released into the wild and finds that, yep, its a grocery market out there, catching prey all by himself is not an issue, 2) doesn't get killed by other male lions (male lions crossing paths with a single male will attempt to kill the individual if possible), 3) despite the lack of a prominent mane and being undersized (as pride leaders go), is able to not only take over a pride but all by himself fight off any and all other suitors and maintain the harmony of his pride over a period of years. You know that cell phone that the Packers issued to Brett Favre, you know, that phone that the team was able to track all calls on ....

I saw the story about the lion "Christian" who was saved by two men. As many viewers I was very moved by the story. I must say however, that the way the story was presented or should I say made fun of by David outraged me.
David, a true professional no matter what their profession, is first a human being,,, The fact that you made such a joke of this heart warming tribute to two wonderful men that had the compassion to save this lion is incomprehensable to me.
Your actions spoke volumes to your true character... what little you apparently have.
The next time and there will always be a next time, that a story like this one is presented I think the producers of the Today show should put David in a cage throw away the damn key and let Meredith go solo.
She is a professional in every sense of the word, and her compassion after the story had been shown was not only extremely compassionate but professional.

Yes, this is a touching video. Every time I watch it I cry. Non human animals' love is the same as ours. We are just not used to seeing something of this nature from what most would call a large, powerful "wild animal". Many species of animals would be very loving if the members received the same type of long term intensive training as we do. Unfortunately we have not fully recognized the tremendous companionship which can occur with these. Why should we be so surprised something like this can happen. After all we are really more alike than we are different. You often hear mentioned we want to venture to other worlds to find evidence of life there so we will not feel so alone. I hope we will realize before it is too late that we are not alone as a species. Other species are all around us. We just do not know how or refuse to let them in to our lives. One step in the right direction would be to understand our place in our evolutionary heritage, to stop referring to all animals as "wild creatures" and then to try to begin to learn how we can better understand and communicate with our furry brothers. Maybe our animal brothers can help us to learn how to be more loving to our human brothers!!

My girlfriend sent the story to me this a.m. knowing that I too raised a wild animal from a cub. This happy reunion brought tears to my eyes. Alley didn,t have such a happy ending though. It’s incredible footage that strikes a chord with so many people who have an innate desire to connect with wild animals. But the way this story was told will encourage some people to go out and purchase an exotic pet. Unfortunately the never-ending cycle of breeding big cats for profit is still big business in this country. It’s legal in many states to own a lion. But when these cats outgrow their homes there is nowhere for them to go. Many end up in canned hunts, roadside zoos or worse. There are few people like the late George Adamson who have the knowledge, resources and political connections necessary to teach an animal like Christian how to live in the wild. A 30-second mention of why big cats don’t make good pets would have been a responsible way to wrap up this interview. To the people who commented that Christian was the wild animal "exception," not the rule: You are absolutely correct. The difference here though, was that two young men addressed a wrong they did not create and established a bond that overrode Christian's instinctual hard-wiring. And they did it with love, respect and the knowledge that they were never really Christian's owners. To their further credit, they recognized the necessity of returning Christian to the world he was always meant to inhabit and they've been instrumental in furthering that goal for other wild animals.

Bottom line and a major part of this story: Wild animals belong in the wild. No wild animal should be performing tricks for a few hours a day, spending the remainder of it bored, mistreated or both. Leave these creatures where they belong. Do not buy exotic animals or support the circuses and shows that encourage unnatural behaviors that inevitably lead to the animals lashing out--with horrible consequences for both the animals and any humans who happen to be in the way. This story had a happy ending because 2 people knew a lion shouldn't be in a house but among his own kind. Let's all learn from it.

This is a beautiful story of love. It fills me with hope whenever I see it, but also seems somewhat bitter sweet as lion populations are dwindling faster and faster. I was very happy the Today Show covered this story and interviewed the two gentlemen who loved Christian and were able to bring him to George Adamson. I have to say, I was more than a bit disappointed in David Gregory's comments regarding the video. I like David Gregory and it just made me cringe to see him act in such a way that seemed so "out of touch". I was also a bit disappointed, that the Today Show did not cover more regarding George Adamson. He afterall, is the reason Christian the lion was successfully reintroduced to the wild and eventually became the leader of his own pride. The actors, who played George and Joy Adamson in the movie Born Free, Will Travers and Virginia McKenna, were long time friends of George Adamson. It was they, who put these gentlemen in touch with George Adamson. I found this to be an extraordinary story. Of all the things in my life, this has had the most significant impact on me and I am 66 yrs. old. It is a true love story. The genuine love between Christian and John and Ace is beautiful and shows that all things are possible with love. As a result of this, I have done a lot of research on George Adamson and Kora National Park. I am astounded by George and the wonderful work he did. I am now going to help all I can with the George Adamson Wildlife Preservation Trust and bornfreeusa.org. I will be ever grateful to the TODAY Show for having the Christian Reunited video on the air. I am also very happy to see pictures of John and Anthony as they are today. They were marvelous young people and they are still. I love Christian too!

The video was so very moving. You could truly see the love that Christian felt when reuniting with his former caretakers and it was to say the least "priceless". Truly beautiful. It definitely touches one's emotions way deep inside. And it has such a happy ending, Christian having a family and caring on his legacy. Reminded me of Semba in the Lion King which is a story i adore!!! :)

Some people are overly sensitive and need to lighten up. I love animals too, but I know that David didn't mean harm by his comments. Meredith's interview was just fine. And as for Candace Stebbins in Indianapolis: Grow up, get over it, and stop living in the past. Katie is gone and not coming back. And believe or not, some of us had more than our fill of her and couldn't wait for her leave.
