From Bow to Wow: BIG dogs edition

From TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport

It is that time again for my favorite segment: From Bow to Wow. This time I wanted to focus on BIG dogs, since their size does present a challenge when it comes to adoption.

At Animal Care and Control of New York City, we found four true beauties, all in desperate need of a loving home, and this was their lucky day! Starting with the females first, we found Sonya -- a gorgeous flat-haired retriever mix, who was sadly left tied to a pole, but she is so sweet and affectionate that she would be a gift for anyone. Next, there is Phoebe, a stunning Australian cattle dog with a heart of gold and eyes that will melt your heart.

Now for the boys, with Marcus -- the magnificent German shepherd whose owner had to give him up, but what a love bug this boy is! He is so regal and powerful, yet so gentle and sweet. And finally there is Jack the Jack Russell. I know what you're thinking -- no, he is not BIG in terms of his size -- but what a BIG personality he has! So he definitely deserves to be in this mix!

Each of these dogs is so filled with love, and just waiting to share it with you. As the owner of four dogs (two females, two males), three BIG ones and one small one with a very BIG personality like Jack the Jack Russell, when I look at this group, I feel like I am in my own backyard! If you have been looking for a BIG dog to share your life with, I hope you will consider one of these precious pooches. They have so much love to give, and because of their size, there is that much more to hug and cuddle with!

Dear viewers: If you're interested in finding information on how to adopt the dogs seen on TODAY, please visit the Animal Care & Control of New York City's site at nycacc.org.

Shia LaBeouf's 'love connection'

Posted: Thursday, June 25, 2009 9:24 AM by Ryan Osborn

It was one of those moments when cynicism about Hollywood fades, outshone by the light in a young woman’s eyes.

Shia LaBeouf was in Studio 1A to talk about his new film, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” when Matt Lauer, mingling outside with the crowd in Rockefeller Plaza, spotted 20-year-old Samantha Previte from North Brunswick, New Jersey, a fan who was hoping devoutly to catch the actor’s attention, if just for a fleeting second.

Within moments, Samantha found herself in Studio 1A, where LaBeouf was talking to Meredith Vieira. Vieira yielded her seat to Samantha, who suddenly found herself face-to-face with one of the most popular young leading men in Hollywood.

“I’ve been planning this all week,” exclaimed Samantha. Animated valentine hearts were almost visibly dancing around her as she pointed to her cheerful floral skirt. “I bought this... I can’t believe this!”

“You look great,” LaBeouf said gallantly.

Gently prompted by Vieira to ask the 23-year-old actor a question, starstruck Samantha admitted, “I don’t know what to ask... I’m in shock.” But then she recovered enough composure to seize the opportunity and inquire, “What kind of girl are you interested in... honestly?”

“All kinds,” LaBeouf replied suavely. “What are you doing the rest of the day? My day is boring."

A secondhand horse sanctuary

From TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport

In the luxurious land of the Hamptons in eastern Long Island is a private sanctuary dedicated to taking care of horses left at death's door. The Sagaponack, N.Y., farm is called Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue. It's run by a local woman named Christine Distefano, who has loved horses her whole life and wanted to make a difference in their lives.

And boy has she ever! In just four short years, she has rescued 88 horses, and has gotten 44 of them adopted. Many are retired racehorses, some former show horses, or lesson horses with one thing in common: Once they were no longer money makers, they were given up to die! That is, until Christine was notified and literally pulled them off the truck when they were on their way to slaughter. Her farm survives solely on donations and the kindness of others who have opened up their hearts and wallets to help this wonderful place.

As a horse lover/owner I am so fortunate to know firsthand what wonderful majestic creatures they are, and just because their careers may be over, that should not mean their lives are! Thanks to Amaryllis Farm, they're not.

Find out more about Amaryllis Equine Rescue and how to help the horses here.

Charlie Todd, the founder of "Improv Everywhere" was on the show this morning.

Formed in August of 2001, the group is known for causing "scenes of chaos and joy in public places".

While Todd is now out with a book called, "Causing a Scene: Extraordinary Pranks in Ordinary Places," the group is probably best known for their "mission" called "Frozen in Grand Central". Since first being posted to Youtube it has been viewed over 17 million times.

The Today Show Final Four

This morning, Richard Sandomir and Mark Reiter were on the show to talk about their new book, "The Final Four of Everything".

The two write: "The bracket is a unique way of organzing information that dates back to rise of the knockout (or single elimination) tournament, perhaps in medieval times...You, of course, may be familiar with the bracket format via the NCAA basketball tournament pairings each March...We take the idea one step further and apply this knockout format to every category but basketball."

They built a site to accompany the release of the book where you can go and build your own brackets.

To have a little fun, we built the following bracket. Who is your pick to come out on top?

Seen in Matt's dressing room ... spotted in the makeup room ... and also in our control room, this morning "Sleestaks" invaded Studio 1A.

"Sleestaks" are the half-reptile and half-alien creatures from "The Land of the Lost".

When asked for an interview about their roles in the movie, they just hissed.

From Bow to Wow: Pooches get a second chance at life

From TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport

When we first did this very special Bow to Wow segment, the response was overwhelming. All of the dogs were adopted within minutes of the story airing. I feel so blessed to be able to do it again. This time, I went to one of the busiest pounds in the country: Animal Care and Control of New York City. Here they take in more than 6,000 dogs a year ... all waiting for that special someone to give them a second chance at life. I decided this time to pick three dogs that had very challenging situations either because of their breed or age. WATCH VIDEO CONTINUED >>
