Cat scratch fever for crazy nail art

It's no secret around the studio at TODAY that I proudly share my affection for nail art. Whether I'm in search of a fresh color trend or the latest in design decals, I’ve been known to approach strangers on the subway just to find out where they get their nails done. I’ve even come across a technician in L.A. who was able to create a snow globe on an acrylic nail (by sealing water into an air pocket!), and I still want to go to a big nail competition show.

Another guilty pleasure? I freely admit to being a big Hello Kitty fan despite being 30 years older than most of her current fan base.

My love for  nails and for that adorable cartoon kitten knows no bounds, so imagine my excitement when a very interesting entry over at bellasugar.com featured a nail whiz who, funnily enough, I had come across before while perusing my favorite DIY-ers on the Etsy marketplace site. I wandered over to Pinky-anela’s Flickr page, which is a must-see for all (behold some of the finest Hello Kitty nail art, as well as some outrageous and innovative colors, patterns and designs).

I know some of these (and these) looks are a little avant-garde, but I’m curious to know:  Am I alone in my fascination with designer digits (no need to respond, Kathie Lee, as I can feel your disapproval as I write this) or is this something you can join me in appreciating? While these photos are extreme, I’m interested in knowing:  Is nail art in general a do or a don’t?

I think if you have to ask if something is a do or a don't you should just automatically assume it's a don't.
I don't like long nails or any type of nail art. To me, nail art is a definite "low class" look. In fact, I think that long, painted fingernails instantly ages a woman.  The "in" nail look is very short and a not much if any color.
where can i see a pic of the snow globe nail?? would love to see what it looks like.
Yuck!  I absolutely hate nail art and think it is about as tacky as you can get.  But then, my fashion taste is ultra conservative.  I don't mean to offend anyone.
A DO!!!!
I'm so glad that as a beauty editor, you too are torn as to whether or not nail art is a "do" or a "don't". I have been getting nail art done for a couple of years now, and I still get so excited before each manicure! I get compliments all the time on my nails. I'm already dreaming up my next design...
I don't know that much about fashion, but I do know about being a mother.  So, let me give you some motherly advice:  Seriously,   life is short.  Most of us spend way too much time worrying about what other people think, to the extent that we make ourselves unhappy.  God made all of us different.  We are NOT supposed to be cardboard cut outs of one another.  Individuality should be celebrated.  If you like Nail Art, and it makes you happy, and you cause harm to no one else, then GO FOR IT.
I have nail art done every manicure.  It makes me feel renewed, with different pleasures to look at.  I feel young ( I am only 35 ), frisky, and feminine.
I am generally of the opinion that it's a don't... I will, occasionally, get a flower on my toes, but I can't even bring myself to paint my nails a color because it completely sends me over the edge when the polish chips and I don't have the same color to at least fix it!!
I LOVE IT! If I could find someone close in L.A. to do it inexpensively I'd love to try. However I found only a few shops in O.C. do this and it can be expensive ($90+) p set. However, Like all types of fahion and accessory wild nails may not be right for all events/ work sites/ etc.
I loved your wonderful, albeit too short article. I am also a nail art aficionado. My best friend and I get our nails done together every other week and always compete to see who gets the cutest design. It gives us a chance to bond, relax and have fun all at the same time, what woman couldn’t use a little more of that in her life. Yes some people may not agree or like your nail art but in the end the decision comes down to which is more important to you; your happiness or a stranger’s approval? Happiness wins for me every time :) On a separate note I too am a huge Hello Kitty fan. I have ordered several limited edition HK dolls/stuffed animals from Japan and display them in a small curio cabinet in my home. My husband thinks I’m a bit crazy but seems to love me anyway. So I say live it up girlfriend and go get those nails done!
