From TODAY correspondent Jill Rappaport What a great way to start the month of October: with a new installment of From Bow To Wow. This time, my producer Vivian Fel and I went to
Animal Care & Control of NYC , and picked out three fabulous dogs all hoping to find the perfect home.
First, we have the lovable Betty, who was tragically found next to her owner who was deceased. Needless to say she is terribly sad, but despite her trauma, she is so affectionate, but desperately in need of a loving home now.
Next we have Max, the energetic, young golden retriever who was given up by his owner who sadly is homeless ... now Max is, too. Finally there is Ollie, an adorable Maltese mix puppy, whose owners just gave him up! All of these dogs are healthy, sweet, affectionate and beautiful. The only thing they do not have is a home ...
Dear viewers: For more info on adopting these animals, please visit the
Web site for Animal Care and Control of New York City .
Editor’s note: After today’s segment on “Stiletto Stoners” we received the following submission. While we do not necessarily agree with or endorse the viewer’s opinions and do not condone illegal activity, we include it here as an interesting sidelight to the topic of young professional woman choosing to smoke marijuana rather than drink a glass of wine to unwind. She asked that her name be withheld.
What a wonderful topic, Stiletto Stoners was a great segment on the TODAY show today. I think the estimate of 8 million women smoking marjiana is very low. I smoked pot in college casually in the early ’80, graduating in 1987 from a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. There really wasn't much going on in the drug world on campus other than cocaine, to my knowledge. I really had no experience with pot after college: I worked hard, married, had kids, saw the occasional smoker at various parties, but that was it. When I was divored in my late 30s, a friend suggested that I use pot to relax my nerves and that it was less complicating than alcohol. I gave it a shot, and she was right.

Wish your jeans could do the flirting? A new line of pants features mesmerizing custom graphics on one’s derriere that “wink” while you walk. These “Winkers,” in styles from owl eyes to clap boards, make good use of curves, but can cost between $140-$160. During TODAY’s chat, Hoda jokingly claimed she “might do the owl [style]” but Kathie Lee insisted she “didn’t want to draw attention that part of my anatomy.”
Are they cute or creepy? And would you ever wear them?

From Style Editor Bobbie Thomas The fashion scene in France is dividing at the seams over a proposed law that would require retouched photos (including advertising, press photos, political campaigns, art photography, and packaging images) to come with labels clearly stating that they have been altered. It’s no secret, at least it shouldn’t be at this point, that most of the images we see in magazines are doctored before they make it to print — be it simple color correcting or dramatic figure altering. Now on the heels of recent issues involving the likenesses of such famous ladies as Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Winslet and Kim Kardashian, this law has people questioning the potential harm associated with passing distorted images off as the real deal. With teenage eating disorders consistently on the rise and unrealistic standards being set, lawmakers hope this regulation combats the negative body images that pervade popular culture.

Kathie Lee had "big news in our family" to share with viewers this morning. For the past seven months, her son Cody has been dating Claire Schreiner, "a beautiful girl" from Gillette, Wyoming -- and on Sunday night, she was crowned Miss Wyoming USA, meaning she will go on to compete in the Miss USA pageant next April. Cody sent his mom a text saying "I'm really proud of her."
"She was focused to get ready for this," Kathie Lee commented to Hoda Kotb. "Sort of like me every morning getting focused to be with you."
Check out how Claire looked winning the crown and see what a cute couple she and Cody make. Watch the video after the jump.

Carrie Fisher stopped by our studio this morning to talk about her new Broadway show, "Wishful Drinking."
The actress had some great lines and we wanted to share her wisdom here.
Here are a few quotes:
"You are only as sick as your secrets."
"I invite people to my show not to look at my house but to listen to the furniture."
"When you are a teenager you are horrified by everyone."
"I don't know that anyone in our family is comfortable."
"I now get awards for being mentally ill."
"I say, 'I was invited to a mental hospital, you know and you don't want to be rude. Right? So you go.'"
"My target audience..gay, mentally ill, sci-fi, alcoholics..."
"I knew celebrity was just obscurity biding its time. I mean, you know, it is all going to run into a wall."
You can read an excerpt from Carrie Fisher's memoir, "Wishful Drinking," here .
From TODAY correspondent Sara Haines You may have seen some of the behind-the-scenes pictures that I have been posting to Twitter and on this blog . Now, I am taking it up a notch and adding video to the mix which I hope to share with you here on allDAY. This morning, Dr. Nancy Snyderman was on the show to talk about a new study that claims, "the more a child was spanked, the lower his or her IQ compared with others."
As the segment aired , here were some reactions on Twitter:

Here is what Hoda and Piers discussed this morning:
After a great reaction to the story of two brothers and now two sisters who were all reunited this morning on our show , allDAY reached out to Don Carrigan, the reporter at NBC affiliate WCSH6 in Portland, Maine, who first broke the story. Here is his guest post: What are the odds? Just think about that -- what are the odds of two guys going to work at the same place, then discovering they're brothers? That's one reason so many people have loved this story, and why I love this story. But another reason is that these are Maine kids, taken from their birth parents by the state so many years ago, suddenly, beautifully discovering they have family. How can you not love that? I got a call at home from one of their co-workers the day the brothers announced it to the rest of the crew at Dow Furniture. But I didn't get the message in time to be there for the party. So the next day we arranged to come by. To tell the truth, I didn't know what a great story this was until we got there, met Gary and Randy, and heard it from them. It was then very clear that this was a terrific story to share. Placing them in the truck for our interview seemed natural. And then when Gary made his now-famous comment "nothing good ever happens in Waldoboro", it was too perfect for words. You have to know Waldoboro, Maine is a town of about 5,000, and a place that's had more than its share of problems. The worst was this spring, when one local woman was killed, another badly injured in an attack by two other supposed friends of theirs. It really shocked the town. Beyond that, its been a hard year for people who harvest clams, which is one of the towns major businesses. A hard year for everybody, including the furniture store where Randy and Gary work. So maybe that's the best part of all. This time, something good happened in Waldoboro. We need good things every once in a while to remind us that life has ups as well as downs. The economy's still bad, summer's over, winter's ahead. But these two brothers -- and now their sisters -- have just brought a smile to every face. I'm hoping they'll let us be there for Thanksgiving.
A TODAY viewer says she has made an amazing connection while watching our show this morning. During the story about two co-workers who learned they are long-lost brothers and then found their sister , Kat Cooper posted this on her blog :
Meredith Viera (sp?) asked about another sister that they have never met and were still looking for, Joanne said yes, her birth name was Claire Marie, she would be about 39 years old. That's me. I'm Claire Marie.
I knew the second I saw Joanne sitting on the couch, I knew who she was. We went to high school together, had a study hall, lunch, and gym class together. At one point during those high school years, my sister Jo and I talked to Joanne, we asked her if she had a sister, her last name is my birth last name, she said no, but that's because she didn't know that she even had a sister back then. But Joanne and I are identical, we look even more alike now than we did back in school. ...
That's my sister Joanne and my brothers that I never knew that I had, Gary and Randy. I have a sister and brothers, I'm meeting them tomorrow morning on the Today show.
You can read more of Kat's blog here (including her initial reaction which we couldn't share!), and check out the video that sparked this amazing realization here .
Tune in to TODAY on Wednesday to see Kat Cooper's reunion with her siblings.

Today producers and allDAY contributors Mary Ann Zoellner and Alicia Ybarbo are once again a part of the momversation .
The site asks :
Healthy competition is good. It pushes you to become a better version of yourself, whether it's in sports, gaming, or even the workplace. But when it comes to moms competing over their children, well, that gets a bit sticky. Do we really need to compete over kids' grades, the price of their clothes, or which mom bought the most expensive toy for Christmas? Does competition over these things help anyone? Shouldn't we set mommy competition aside and instead support one another?
How do you deal with super-competitive moms?

After Meredith read the “Parks and Recreation” star her horoscope from the New York Post, Poehler was presented with a birthday cake. It's important to have role models in life. Growing up, I always looked up to my dad. Well, my dad and Kirby Puckett. He was the epitome of a baseball player -- athletic, smart. He was not only a leader in the clubhouse, but in the community as well. The same can be said about my dad. Except for maybe that whole athletic thing (sorry dad). But he served as the perfect example when it came to a work ethic that I still strive to duplicate.

Good morning!
Here is what Kathie Lee & Hoda discussed this morning:
One of the world’s most anticipated publishing events is rapidly approaching, and America’s number one morning television program will be on the forefront. In an exclusive weeklong series, TODAY is launching a countdown to the release of bestselling author Dan Brown’s new novel, “The Lost Symbol.” The eagerly awaited release is Brown’s follow-up to his No.1 international phenomenon and bestselling adult novel of all time, “The Da Vinci Code.” “TODAY's Search for the Lost Symbol” begins Tuesday, September 8 and culminates with a rare sit-down interview with Brown and Matt Lauer on TODAY Tuesday, September 15, the day the book hits stores. The interview will be Brown’s first television interview for the book release. In recent weeks, Lauer has been busy travelling to top-secret locations that play key roles in “The Lost Symbol.” Beginning Tuesday, September 8, TODAY will reveal exclusive clues to these locations, one clue a day through September 15. The book’s most important scenes take place in these locations, and viewers are encouraged to log onto TODAYshow.com each day to try to solve the mystery. TODAY will reveal the answers to all of the clues Wednesday, September 16, after the book’s release. TODAY will also take a behind-the-scenes look into the making of a bestseller with exclusive access to the manufacturing and printing of “The Lost Symbol.” On Tuesday, September 15, TODAY will air a sit-down interview with Brown and Lauer from Brown’s home. This marks the first time Brown has done a television interview from his home. “The Lost Symbol” will be published in the U.S. and Canada by Doubleday, and will have a first printing of 5 million copies.“The Da Vinci Code” is the bestselling hardcover adult novel of all time with 81 million copies in print worldwide.
