Join Al and 'Lend a Hand' to those in need!

From TODAY researcher Michelle Fanucci

Monday, June 22, marks the start of TODAY's special Lend a Hand series with Al Roker. Al is traveling the country to surprise five exceptional charities with truckloads of donations. We're excited to share their stories and show how they're restoring hope and opportunity in their respective communities.

The Lend a Hand team has been working nonstop for months in preparation for this upcoming week. We've been fundraising like crazy to exceed anyone's wildest dreams. In the midst of an ugly recession, and with corporate giving down, this hasn't been an easy task. But we've taken a page from David Copperfield's book of tricks -- and performed magic! Our Penske trucks are filled with computers, clothing, cars and kayaks -- and we're ready to deliver.

This will be a week of recognition -- a week of gracious giving, and endless possibilities. It has been an absolute privilege and joy to work on the Lend a Hand project for the last two years. I've witnessed the power of this series, and have been inspired by its history, significance and growth.

Lend a Hand began in 2002 as a way to jumpstart smaller, lesser-known charities, which lost donations as money was diverted to September 11th philanthropic efforts. In the past seven years, the series has brought Al to 34 cities in 28 states, encouraging viewers to give locally and work to improve their own communities. Lend a Hand started with a $120,000 giveaway and ended last year making history with a million dollars worth of donations. This year, I'm proud to say, we've hit a new record.

Lend a Hand is an example of what we can do, as a community and as a country, to help folks when they're down and in need of a hand to lift them up. This series would not be possible without Al's enthusiasm, energy or spirited drive, nor without the dedication and hard work of our talented producers. And let's not forget the generosity of our participating company donors, without whom we would not have anything to deliver to the communities in need.

To all, we express our heartfelt thanks. Even working through a recession, we have collectively found ways to give.

Be sure to tune in next week and visit TODAYshow.com if your company is interested in donating. I will personally respond, accepting donations all next week.

The way to heal a country is to start with one community at a time. Lend a Hand is the vehicle to get us there. Won't you hop on the Lend a Hand Express with Al?

Wow, Michelle....thank you. You are a great writer! Can't wait to watch next week. I've been following Lend a Hand since 2002. Good luck to Al.
As a community and a country..... gracious giving.....endless possibilities. This is what makes the American people so special.
Congratulations to all involved!!!!
GO LEND A HAND!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK , TODAY.
In times like this its glad to see that Lend a Hand is going coast to coast to help people.  What keeps Al Roker going?  What's in his coffee?  He is always in a great mood, he needs to share his secret.
After attending Bible study last night, I have learned that it is always better to give than receive.  It has always been a joy for me to see those on the receiving end.  Often times I wish I was the giver.  During these trying times, wherein we all appear to be in an economic crunch, we fail to remember that God is the actual source of all our needs.
Anyway I can help in charlotte?? I have a lot of free time. I'm very hard worker, educated, willing and able..

Thank you, Al Roker, Michelle Fanucci, and all the staff and donors for making this massive effort to help those in need in our country !
I was touched by this story. I myself volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Sarasota Florida on Saturday mornings. I have been looking to volunteer more but am having a hard time finding a place to do this. I have a Monday thru Friday job and volunteer on Saturdays, Was hoping to find an orginization at nights or possibly a few times a year for a week or two? Is there anything that you are aware of?
Did Al say what cities he'd be in?
I heard that Al will be in Portland,OR.
Hi Al - I am in the Portland OR area and would love to help with your lend a hand charity, is there anything I can do while you are here to help?

Michelle you are and inspiration to every american, big efforts do start small!! I hope my daughter will grow up like you!
Hi Al,
I always admire your "Lend a Hand" efforts.  There are so many needy organizations trying to do a lot with a little.  How are organizations chosen for "Lend a Hand? Keep up the great work!!
I am flying to Portland today. Where will
Al Roker be in Portland tomorrow?
I work for a charity in Virginia and would like to know how my agency could become a beneficiary of Lend A Hand Today.
Hi Al,
I have been watching Lend a Hand since it's beginning. The group you sponsored in California on June 22, 2009 is wonderful and deserving.
I work with underpriviledged youth and their families in Rural Appalachia, Meigs County Ohio. Is there a process where groups and apply? I would love to add the Mulberry Community Center on the list because of all the good works it does for Meigs County residence.
Keep up the great work?
Lend a Hand to those in need is doing a great work for our youth and community.  We are a now profit organization working with at risk youth from proverity stricken and drug invested communities.  How do we apply for this great program?

Wow, Mr. Roper this sounds like a dream come true for some. I love the title Lend a Hand, because there is truly a great need for this around the world.  Please tell me how my non profit organization could receive any help.  We are now at risk of losing everything we can't afford to pay the mortgages and bills. We need help.
Mr. Roper this is a great thing you are doing.  One questions how does the cries of the "little people be heard"? We have been crying!!!
Wow, what a way to give back, a love the scripture that reads "to much is given, much is required", Michelle your not just taking your giving. Where do agencies sign up to be a part of this selection of needy organizations.

My grandson (8) loved the show this morning.  I'll be visiting Portland for 4 days and he wants me to take a picture of the playground.  Can you tell me which one it was?  Thanks, Maureen
I am thrilled Al will be visiting Galveston, Texas. This will help the community tremendously, while still recovering from Hurricane Ike. Although it has been close to a year, people outside of the community don't realize the challenges faced everyday with the recovery efforts. Thanks and kudos to everyone that makes this happen!
I know of an organization that has been working many years on a project and could use a helping hand.  With our local timber based economy hurting and the local sawmill closing it's not a pretty financial picture for these grass roots organizations.  How do I get this event in touch with them to see if they qualify?
Hello Mr. Roker,

I've been watching you with "Lend A Hand" for several years.  I am very intrested in getting the organization I work for considered by "Lend A Hand".
What do I need to do?
I have seen Al and his "Lend a Hand" project for the past several years and I think it is absolutely wonderful. I work for "The Hope Center" in Lexington, KY, a nonprofit charity. I was wandering if you could send me information on how you pick your organizations. I would like to get an application for our organization. Thank you
