From Bow to Wow: BIG dogs edition

It is that time again for my favorite segment: From Bow to Wow. This time I wanted to focus on BIG dogs, since their size does present a challenge when it comes to adoption.

At Animal Care and Control of New York City, we found four true beauties, all in desperate need of a loving home, and this was their lucky day! Starting with the females first, we found Sonya -- a gorgeous flat-haired retriever mix, who was sadly left tied to a pole, but she is so sweet and affectionate that she would be a gift for anyone. Next, there is Phoebe, a stunning Australian cattle dog with a heart of gold and eyes that will melt your heart.

Now for the boys, with Marcus -- the magnificent German shepherd whose owner had to give him up, but what a love bug this boy is! He is so regal and powerful, yet so gentle and sweet. And finally there is Jack the Jack Russell. I know what you're thinking -- no, he is not BIG in terms of his size -- but what a BIG personality he has! So he definitely deserves to be in this mix!


Each of these dogs is so filled with love, and just waiting to share it with you. As the owner of four dogs (two females, two males), three BIG ones and one small one with a very BIG personality like Jack the Jack Russell, when I look at this group, I feel like I am in my own backyard! If you have been looking for a BIG dog to share your life with, I hope you will consider one of these precious pooches. They have so much love to give, and because of their size, there is that much more to hug and cuddle with!

Haute hounds: Ambush Doggie Makeovers!

On Monday, July 6th TODAY will be ambushing three lucky dogs on Rockefeller Plaza with a doggie makeover!   

If you are in the New York area and think that your pup needs some pizzazz, stop by the Plaza and your dog may get a new 'do. Experts will be roaming the crowd starting at 6:45 a.m., so be there early to get a good spot!

How much do you think you can say in 140 characters or less?! Twitter has been an instrumental new tool in the world of social networking. Some people tweet on the latest news & happenings in Iran. Others ... simply to tell you they just finished their grilled cheese sandwich from last night.

Shia LaBeouf's 'love connection'

It was one of those moments when cynicism about Hollywood fades, outshone by the light in a young woman’s eyes.

Shia LaBeouf was in Studio 1A to talk about his new film, “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” when Matt Lauer, mingling outside with the crowd in Rockefeller Plaza, spotted 20-year-old Samantha Previte from North Brunswick, New Jersey, a fan who was hoping devoutly to catch the actor’s attention, if just for a fleeting second.

Within moments, Samantha found herself in Studio 1A, where LaBeouf was talking to Meredith Vieira. Vieira yielded her seat to Samantha, who suddenly found herself face-to-face with one of the most popular young leading men in Hollywood.

“I’ve been planning this all week,” exclaimed Samantha. Animated valentine hearts were almost visibly dancing around her as she pointed to her cheerful floral skirt. “I bought this... I can’t believe this!”

“You look great,” LaBeouf said gallantly.

Gently prompted by Vieira to ask the 23-year-old actor a question, starstruck Samantha admitted, “I don’t know what to ask... I’m in shock.” But then she recovered enough composure to seize the opportunity and inquire, “What kind of girl are you interested in... honestly?”

“All kinds,” LaBeouf replied suavely. “What are you doing the rest of the day? My day is boring."

Baseball season may be fully underway but did you know that TODAY competes in a little softball league of its own? Although the weather here in NYC has not been cooperating, we've been training and gearing up for Opening Day in Central Park . When the rain finally stops and our team is ready to take the field, we mean business. 
 
While many of our producers, researchers and other colleagues behind the scenes are TODAY softball all-stars, I couldn't help but wonder which TODAY anchor would be the most reliable to go the distance and bring us home the big "W."
 
In this week's "Getting to Know TODAY," we ask the TODAY family: In order for the TODAY softball team to remain undefeated, which anchor would you put on the mound?

Buzz Aldrin: Astronaut, author...rapper?

This morning, astronaut Buzz Aldrin (video) talked about his new book, "Magnificent Desolation: The Long Journey Home From The Moon."  The book details his amazing journey to the lunar surface, and his battle with depression and alcoholism after his return.

In the 40 years since he walked on the moon, Buzz Aldrin has continued his interest in the space program focusing on space tourism.

In addition, he recently teamed up with the folks from Funny Or Die.com and made a hip-hop music video with Snoop Dogg. We didn't get a chance to get the video during his segment due to breaking news, but it's definitely worth a look!

When my boss asked me and my colleague Ian Wenger to produce a piece on the Los Angeles-based charity A Chance For Children, I wasn't expecting whale watching, truck operation or granola storage -- but I got a taste of all of the above. It's a dog's life (on the waves)

Scott Chandler surfs big waves for a living – BIG waves – the kind that look like the mouth of a giant whale about to swallow the pipsqueak human beneath the curl. “Whenever I surf those 65-foot waves, I risk my life – so I get some press and my picture gets around,” he said.

 

However, it’s the waves Chandler catches in waist-deep water that have people clamoring to see more, because of the adorable accessory atop his surfboard: a 12-pound Jack Russell Terrier named Zoey.

 

True to her terrier breed, Zoey also digs in the sand and chases squirrels. But what can we say: This dog loves to surf! Riding the waves in tandem with Chandler and his daughter, Zoey does it all. This week she won first place at the Loews Coronado Dog Surf Contest in San Diego.

 

About 1,000 people attended the event despite the fact that it was cold and drizzling (after all, this is California – 65 degrees is freezing!). And I have to say it was one of the nicest crowds I have ever encountered at any event. No one was rowdy, drinking too much, or obnoxious. And with so many dogs around having a good time, it was impossible not to smile.

 

The event was also an excuse for people to showcase their incredible devotion to their dogs. There was lots of doggie talk, doggie sponsors, and wacky dog costumes.

Life can be a whiplash.  While Twittering from DC this morning, I suddenly got a call asking me to host a big deal UNHCR World Refugees Day event starting in an hour because CNN's Anderson Cooper's plane couldn't land in the rain.

UNHCR helps millions of refugees all over the world, so "no" was not an option.

Monday, June 22, marks the start of TODAY's special Lend a Hand series with Al Roker. Al is traveling the country to surprise five exceptional charities with truckloads of donations. We're excited to share their stories and show how they're restoring hope and opportunity in their respective communities.

The Lend a Hand team has been working nonstop for months in preparation for this upcoming week. We've been fundraising like crazy to exceed anyone's wildest dreams. In the midst of an ugly recession, and with corporate giving down, this hasn't been an easy task. But we've taken a page from David Copperfield's book of tricks -- and performed magic! Our Penske trucks are filled with computers, clothing, cars and kayaks -- and we're ready to deliver.

What's best for Latino students who struggle with English? Should they be taught through bilingual education or are English-only programs the way to go? The answer for a school district in Charlotte, N.C., seems to be a strong combination of both. At the Collinswood Language Academy (kindergarten through sixth grade) students spend half their day learning subjects like math and science in Spanish and the other half being taught history and social studies in English. Living on a hyphen

I am a first generation American. A Hispanic-American if you will.

Notice the hyphen.
 
With my light skin, hazel eyes and brown hair you wouldn't know it right off the bat. My name Vivian doesn't give it away either as my parents officially dropped the last "a" so it would sound more American, another way to assimilate after immigrating to Miami Beach from Buenos Aires. (Certain friends still call me Viviana because they know I secretly prefer it!)
 
I'll admit that my preference for the Spanish version of my name is so that in some way, I would have an instant giveaway about who I am or a quick way to bond with someone who is also Hispanic. The truth is though, that the dangling "a" still doesn't solve a personal quest for identity, nor would it reveal all that I am. And I do know who I am in terms of my values and what is important to me. It is this life on the hyphen, this grey yet colorful place between the Hispanic and the American that can be a little harder to define.

Kerry Sanders: What I learned from living in Peru

Hip is something I’m not.

I like to think I’m not a total square but when I started working on a story about Hispanics and pop culture, I will admit I was unaware of Ozomatli.

Their music is now on my iPod, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

Some of my Latino friends joke that I’m an “honorary Hispanic" -- that makes me smile.

Growing up in Peru
It may be because as a teenager (mid 1970s), I lived in Lima, Peru.

My American mother grew up in Lima, and it only seemed natural to her that I’d one day know what her upbringing was like.

I attended high school there (and you thought chemistry was difficult in English!), played futbol and most importantly, jumped with two feet into the rhythms of a different culture.

I was a fish out of water, but not for long. My then-girlfriend and cultural ambassador, Magaly Messarina, gave this “gringo” some lessons in the Latin “ritmo” (rhythm).

Plus, you had to learn to dance. Not only to fit in, but to make the evening fun. Evening parties were very long affairs.

Peru had it’s political problems back then, so each night, there was a government ordered curfew (toque de queda).

We danced toque to toque. The party would end with the curfew, shortly after sunrise.

Summer officially begins on Sunday, and with the weather warming up and vacation on everyone's mind, some parents may be gearing up for a little getaway. But what does that mean for your kids?  It's never an easy task to leave your little ones with just anyone ... even a TODAY Show anchor.

Inspired by the success of the recently published "TODAY'S Moms" book, we decided to go straight to our TODAY show moms and dads (here's lookin' at you, Al) to see who among our TODAY family would be recruited for babysitting duties.

In this week's "Getting to Know TODAY," we ask the TODAY family: If you had to trust your kids with another TODAY anchor to babysit, who would you choose and why?

David Fishman may only be 12 years old but his food reviews have already been published in "GQ" and "Time Out for Kids." David recently paid a visit to Studio 1A where we put his taste buds to the test. After trying Hoda, Kathie Lee and Sara's favorite recipes, he whipped up this review below !

It was a dark rainy day when I awoke to the usual sound of my mother telling me to get up. School was over for the year. This is an OUTRAGE. Something was different about today though. Oh yeah... I was headed to the TODAY show.

A large black car with comfortable leather seats and bottled water in the cup holders sat waiting to leave with it’s passengers: my mom and me. We were whisked through the city and arrived at 15 Rock just on time: 9:20AM. I walked into a medium sized room called the“green room” and sat down along with about 6 other people waiting to be on the famous TODAY Show. Seconds turned into minutes and minutes into hours (meaning time dragged on for awhile before I was asked to sit down for the teaser).

Finally at 10:15 am I sat down at a round wooden table next to the big NBC kitchen with four set places and chairs. Three prepared dishes were on the table. One was a Buffalo Chicken Dip recipe, courtesy of Sarah’s mother. Another dish was Lemon Chicken, courtesy of Kathie Lee. The last dish, a dessert: Velvet Cake with cream cheese frosting – this was Hoda’s recipe.

The cameramen were set up (with my mom and dad on the other side) and I was on in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! I ate a tostito chip and that was it. Soon after the teaser, Kathie Lee, Hoda and Sarah walked in with a sense of belonging and sat down at the table. Hoda started to talk to me and I of course became very nervous, but kept my cool. The cameraman said, “ We’re on in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.”   Live TV!

A secondhand horse sanctuary

In the luxurious land of the Hamptons in eastern Long Island is a private sanctuary dedicated to taking care of horses left at death's door. The Sagaponack, N.Y., farm is called Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue. It's run by a local woman named Christine Distefano, who has loved horses her whole life and wanted to make a difference in their lives.

And boy has she ever! In just four short years, she has rescued 88 horses, and has gotten 44 of them adopted. Many are retired racehorses, some former show horses, or lesson horses with one thing in common: Once they were no longer money makers, they were given up to die! That is, until Christine was notified and literally pulled them off the truck when they were on their way to slaughter. Her farm survives solely on donations and the kindness of others who have opened up their hearts and wallets to help this wonderful place.

As a horse lover/owner I am so fortunate to know firsthand what wonderful majestic creatures they are, and just because their careers may be over, that should not mean their lives are! Thanks to Amaryllis Farm, they're not.

Carl Quintanilla: Families torn apart by immigration

No matter what your views are regarding immigration laws in this country, it's tough to watch the story we have for you Tuesday morning on TODAY.

It's about what they call "mixed-status families" -- families made up of both legal and illegal residents who are trying to stay together despite being separated by immigration laws that they have violated.

Take Jose Zaragoza, a legal resident since 1987. He met Ana, the woman he wanted to marry, while visiting Mexico. They married, then waited and waited to get legal papers to bring her into the country. When their patience ran out, Ana came into the U.S. illegally to join her husband, and they had two children, Daniel and Steven.

But Ana eventually paid the price for sneaking into the country. She was deported and now lives in Mexico, away from her kids, who -- because they were born in the U.S. -- are automatically American citizens. They see each other maybe every six months. They must choose between staying in the U.S., where they can build on what their father has done for the past 30 years, without their mother, or they can move to Mexico to live as a family, forfeiting the life in America they legally deserve. I’m often asked what it mean to be a Hispanic American, and I’ve even been told "you don't look Hispanic."  I always reply, "Funny, what does a Hispanic look like?"   With more than 20 Hispanic nations, we are all so different, and there is no standard for what a Hispanic looks like.  We are blond, brunette, redheads, blue eyed, green eyed, and brown eyed.  But for the most part, our culture, our language, and our passions define us.  

We hope to explore these defining parts of culture, as well as the wide-ranging issues facing the Hispanic community, in next week’s series called “We the People.”  Why cover these issues now?  Because we recognize the profile of who we are as America is vastly changing.  The Hispanic population is booming in just about every region of the country; the Census Bureau is predicting the Hispanic population will triple by the year 2050. It is the fastest-growing minority group. Hispanics are breaking ground in just about every way -- in government, business, sports and entertainment.  We may soon have the first Hispanic Justice in the Supreme Court.

End-of-school-year madness!

Most people think that December is the busiest time of year. There are decorations to put up, gifts to buy, parties to attend, vacations to put in for, good will to spread. It's downright madness between Thanksgiving and New Year's, and you can't skip a beat, gain a pound or lose the meaning of it all as the days blur past.

But as the month of May slides into June, it signals the end of the school year, and all the hubbub surrounding it breezes in with the subtlety of a hurricane. My son Jack just graduated from Kindergarten - my little boy! - and my daughter Lucy graduated from nursery on her way to Pre-K. These past two weeks alone my husband and I have had to juggle a pajama breakfast, concerts, a tae kwon do promotion test, kindergarten graduation, parent reading day and picture day at gymnastics.  And that's in addition to the birthday parties, half-days, dentist appointments and play dates that are already on the calendar.

It seems that no parent is immune from this pre-summer process. NBC’s Brian Williams recently sat down with the first lady, Michelle Obama, during his behind-the-scenes look at the Obama Administration. In "Inside the Obama White House" Michelle Obama shared, "This is one of those weeks where it's the end of the school year and there are concerts and potlucks and end of the year everything... and I think I've been at their school two or three times this week. But that is no different from what I did before all of this and it's no different from every parent that I know.”



It's busy, it's crazy. But would we want it any other way? I think we all know the answer to that question. From the excited but proud look on my son's face when my husband and I walked into his classroom for the graduation... to the sad little tug my daughter had on my husband after her last day of nursery school... Those are memories you can neither buy nor repeat. Message to this madness? Take it all in. Charge those camera phones and Flip videos. It's days like these that should be celebrated with hugs, kisses, and maybe a special cupcake or two.

'Causing a Scene' on Today

Charlie Todd, the founder of "Improv Everywhere" was on the show this morning.

Formed in August of 2001, the group is known for causing "scenes of chaos and joy in public places".

While Todd is now out with a book called, "Causing a Scene: Extraordinary Pranks in Ordinary Places," the group is probably best known for their "mission" called "Frozen in Grand Central". Since first being posted to Youtube it has been viewed over 17 million times.

Today is Best Friends Day and while I’m not 7 (I’m...well... considerably older than that), I still  honor and respect the gods of friendship who declared this a national (semi-celebrated) holiday. So in honor of BFF day, this morning I interviewed psychologist Robi Ludwig about the health benefits of having a BFF, a best friend forever.

I honestly can't think of a better remedy for pain, heartbreak, loss, anguish...or a better sounding board for anger, jealousy, ire, fury....or a better cheerleader for happiness, success, love, and luck than a best friend. My best friend is Marni. Why? Well, do you have a couple hours?

The Today Show Final Four

This morning, Richard Sandomir and Mark Reiter were on the show to talk about their new book, "The Final Four of Everything".

The two write: "The bracket is a unique way of organzing information that dates back to rise of the knockout (or single elimination) tournament, perhaps in medieval times...You, of course, may be familiar with the bracket format via the NCAA basketball tournament pairings each March...We take the idea one step further and apply this knockout format to every category but basketball."

They built a site to accompany the release of the book where you can go and build your own brackets.

Free Doughnuts!

Did you know that today is a holiday? Today is National Doughnut Day.

In honor of the occasion, Krispy Kreme is giving away free doughnuts to all customers.

The company says, "no purchase is necessary" and all participating stores will offer "one doughnut per customer."

What they call "Freeday" is part of a trend of companies giving away free stuff in hopes of getting some buzz online.

allDay: Why did you decide to have free doughnut day?

Chef Ron: Krispy Kreme has been celebrating National Doughnut Day for about one decade. What’s better than a shopping spree? A free spree!

TODAY Style Editor Bobbie Thomas recently hosted a clothing swap party -- the fashionable new trend for ladies looking to save some cash (this is the painless, delightful preventative step that comes just before Suze Orman confiscates your Saks card).

The rules were easy: For every item you brought, you were handed a colored ticket which corresponded to three sections – low (Wet Seal, GAP, etc.), middle (Bebe, J. Crew), high (Michael Kors, DVF) and “deal or no deal” (items you’re willing to exchange/barter). You wrote your name on the tickets, which were then thrown in a bowl. The host picked out three at a time for the lucky ladies to “shop” the collection. Whoever snagged the Chloe bag first won (no, not really ... but kinda!).

'Sleestaks' from 'Land of the Lost' invade TODAY

"Sleestaks" are the half-reptile and half-alien creatures from "The Land of the Lost".


When asked for an interview about their roles in the movie, they just hissed.

If you’ve been around TODAY long enough, you know you can depend on Style Editor Bobbie Thomas for the most envy-inducing beauty items. Her office is a Sephora-jacked Wonka factory in which you’re offered everything from hair extensions to rhinestone-studded lollipops to fashion tape – basically, anything you’d expect to spot in Christina Aguilera’s emergency bag. It’s like living next door to Santa. You find yourself looking for any reason to schedule a meeting (“Bobbie, can we discuss Kate Gosselin’s hairstyle?”).

So I was more than thrilled when Bobbie invited me to test-drive the latest celeb trend: Minx nails. Imagine metallic Lee Press-On Nails that can last roughly four weeks, but look more like grillz for your fingers.

Will ‘Land of the Lost’ make Matt a film star?

You can never be sure what’s going to happen when Will Ferrell visits TODAY, but even by his wacky standards, the staged appearance the comedian makes on the morning show with Matt Lauer in his newest movie, “Land of the Lost,” is off the charts.

TODAY co-host Meredith Vieira introduced the clip Monday, noting that it reveals the real star of the movie – Lauer. Shot on the TODAY set, the scene puts Ferrell, as none-too-respected scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, together with Lauer for an interview about his latest book, which has not been kindly received by its critics.

“Stephen Hawking says, ‘This is nonsense.’ That’s his word,” Lauer tells Dr. Marshall.

“OK, you know what? This interview is over,” Ferrell says as he gets up and angrily pulls his lapel mike off his explorer’s vest.
 
“It’s a fair question,” Lauer insists.

“No it’s not. It’s a hatchet job,” Ferrell/Marshall says as he stalks off the set.

Unmoved, Lauer teases the next segment of the show: “When we come back: ‘Trampolines: Summer fun or silent killer?’ ”

As he’s finishing, Ferrell and another man crash back onstage and onto the couch, locked together in combat. Without saying a word, Lauer takes in the situation, grabs a fire extinguisher, and sprays them both down.

“Land of the Lost,” based on a popular 70s TV show, opens in theaters on Friday, June 5.

Dave Matthews Band: Live concert this Friday

It will be the band's first live performance on a morning show.
