Oh, Deer! Matt's Bicycle Bang-Up

UPDATE: Matt will be back tomorrow!  And he will finally be able to respond to Tony Kornheiser's accusation that he did not actually hit a deer...

Where in the world was Matt Lauer Monday morning? Brazil? Cambodia? The exotic Seychelle Islands?

Somewhere considerably less scenic, unfortunately -- the TODAY host was laid up with an injured shoulder after a mishap while bicycling on Long Island. "He was riding his bike over the weekend and he had a run-in with a deer," co-host Meredith Vieira explained.

Vieira added that although Lauer's shoulder was hurt, his sense of humor was intact: He joked in an email that he thought “the deer was hired by the competition.”

“I’d hire the deer -- but just to graze him,” Vieira quipped to Weekend TODAY anchor Lester Holt, who filled in for Lauer.

Vieira said that the deer apparently leapt in front of Lauer, who slammed on his brakes to avoid a collision. The sudden stop threw him off the bike and onto his shoulder. Luckily, Lauer was wearing a helmet.

Lauer, 51, is an avid cyclist who has ridden a bike on TODAY on a number of occasions, most recently around the Olympic velodrome in Beijing. He also rode a bike last year in the Netherlands during his annual “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” globe-girdling trip.

Matt is scheduled to have surgery on the shoulder Monday afternoon. But in true show-biz tradition, he is hoping to be back in his anchor chair on Wednesday. Viewers can convey their best wishes to Matt by commenting on this post. However, viewers who want to leave their best wishes for the deer are on their own.

Matt, get well soon. I Love All, the host on the show but I have to say, Ann Curry should get an OSCAR! She goes everywhere. Her trip to the top of the mountain was TOPS. She has much courage and has inspired me as a teacher and all of my students. BUT, IS IS THE SPIRIT OF HER HEART, that is most inspiring. She is a good example to all of us.
Best Wishes for a quick recovery!!
Get well soon!
Matt, Matt, Matt.....LOL !  I think Tom Cruise sent the deer as a message.  Seriously, I'm wishing you a speedy recovery, and hope to see you back on air real soon !
And how was the deer?  Hoping you're back on the show fast.  We miss You.

Just want to say how happy to hear you are well - and to say how lucky you are Matt!!! No matter though, I have to admit... I am chuckling a bit at the visuals flying through my head of your aerobatics over the handlebars. I've ridden for years so I know how delicate a dance that is LOL! KUDOS to you for handling it with humor - now, I'd love to see SNL do a skit of your deer encounter!!!
Matt,

Matt, Matt, Matt.....LOL !  I think the deer was sent as a sign from Tom Cruise !  Just kidding.  Hoping you are feeling better soon, and looking forward to seeing you back on the air soon.  You are missed !
Matt, I recently broke my arm due to an unleashed dog on a bike path.  Be glad it's just a sore shoulder and not a head injury.  Bones and muscle heal, brains don't.
Deer Matt,
I understand your pain.  A friend and co-worker recently hit a deer on his bike on one of our local rural roads here in Maine.  He flipped over the handlebars, landed on his head & back and split his helmet.  He got a ride in an ambulance as a trauma patient to our local ED.  Fortunately he was only battered, brusied, scraped, and a bit embarrassed. The deer was not as fortunate.  It was knocked into the oncoming lane of traffic and was killed by an oncoming car. The driver of that car had rights to the deer of course and immediately took it home to dress out for his freezer. My friend showed up for work the next day, at the same ED he was taken to as a patient, with a new title that has since stuck....."Deer Slayer."  He didn't even miss a shift.  This is Maine after all.  Good luck and be well.
Matt; We wish you a speedy recovery.   We've missed you on the Today Show.  It just isn't the same without you.
Matt:
We watch the today show every morning to get a bit of news in for the day before we go off to work and school. My 7 year was very confused (yes, he likes to watch in the morning as well) when he didn't see Matt on the show this morning. He said "Mom, when is Matt coming back? Did he get a new job?". I replied that I thought maybe he was still on vacation. Then Meredith announced Matt's accident and my son's reply was "you can't hit a deer on a bike, he is trying to play hookie from work". Needless to say, at Matt's expense, we all had a nice laugh to start our Monday morning. Matt, we wish you a speedy recovery. Maybe you should put one of those deer whistlers on the front of your bike. Some people say they work. Just teasing.

Hey...who  gives a rat`s patoohie for old Matt...how is the deer doing?
Oh Matt!
What some people will go thru to get a day off!
It's unique for a New Yorker though- a deer?
Seriously Matt, I miss your face! Get better! Meanwhile savor the moment. Sometimes life has to slow us down lest we miss the sweetest moments.
God bless!

Dear Matt,
I had the same accident last August with a mother deer and baby at her side. The only thing that saved my life was the helmet.I was on bed rest for 10 days.I hope you feel better soon.My co-works gave the nickname Deer Runner.
I have watched the today show for 30 years and it is as good as it has ever been.  When Katie Couric left I thought you should have hired Ann for the co-anchor spot.  I was a little miffed when you didn't, but I have come to like Meredith very well.  There is wonderful chemistry between every one.  I even like all the people who fill in!  I particularly enjoyed Al and Meredith in Ireland. Al is just a hoot.  What ever he asks for - give it to him. You got to keep Al!
As an after thought - Kathy Lee gives me a pain.
Hope Matt is on the mend.  Keep up the good work!
Matt,

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Matt, please get well soon.  The Today show is never as interesting when you are not there.  You lend a great blend of humor and compassion.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Oh deer!!! Get better soon, that has got to be THE best 'get some time off' excuse ever!! Not that I would want to try. Speedy recovery to you..
Dear Matt;

Just wanted to WISH you WELL, hope your feeling better soon! Miss you in the mornings!
Hey Matt,

Too bad there was no "Mat" there for you
to land on. I guess your on Matt-ernity leave
now.

Nicole
Though I was not riding a bike when I was hit by a deer, I was riding a snowmobile.  Years ago, my second time out, riding with expeirenced sledders, I was the one that it ran into.  It didn't hit the sled, it slammed into me.  Luckly enough we were going fairly slow, the deer found it's footing and scurried back into the woods, but I was bruised all along my side.
Hey Matt ... my name is Barbara, I'm 67, from Chicago and I had a bike mishap two years ago when my front tire went into a rut covered by gravel and I fell off bruising my left arm and knee ... fortunately I had a kit with me to stop the bleeding and then got on my bike and resumed my ride.  Kuddos to you for being a cyclist and wish you a speedy recovering and back on your bike.  I'm sure the deer was as surprised as you were.
Deer Matt,
Does this come under comp or collision? I was hoping to hear the "call from Matt Lauer" on Today this morning before I left for work, but had to read it on the internet instead. Meredith and Al will never let you live this one down. Brace yourself for a long ride! Glad to read you are well and have an intact sense of humor about the whole incident.
I really missed you this morning since you were out the previous week. I recently fell while riding my bike and sprained my ankle, so I understand how hopeless you probably feel at this moment. Hope you are better soon...take care.
hope you're feeling better soon.  Please always wear a bike helmet!!! We miss you!
I am so sorry! Amazing how a moment can derail your plans. After what happened with Ms. Richardson last week, though, I know you are thankful it is not more serious. BE well!
hope you're feeling better soon.  Please always wear a bike helmet!!! We miss you!
Just found what happened to you, Matt.  I was worried something was going on internally and I wouldn't be seeing you again. Take care.  Look to see you back soon.
Matt, the deers should look both ways before crossing a roadway. I have noticed alot more deers running around here in Indiana- more than usual. Get some rest and take care of yourself. Maybe you should eat some deer meat to make you feel better!! LOL. Get well soon...
Matt, my wife and I thought you were "on Assignment"
but then learned you were "On your a-- with a deer?"
At least you were wearing your helmet RIGHT?  We are
glad you didn't have a collision with a deer and auto, which can also be dangerous.  We hope you and the deer "make up" your differences!

Matt,  Be glad you weren't cycling here in Craig, Colorado.  We have deer and elk big enough to total full-sized pickup trucks!!
Hope you feel better soon!
Matt, happy to know that you are doing well. Be very thankful!  It could have been much worse.
Dear Matt,
My brother-in-law was riding his bike a few years back near a forest preserve.  A woman in a car going the opposite direction hit a deer.  That deer flew through the air and hit my brother-in-law, knocking him off his bike and breaking his collar bone, orbital eye socket, arm, etc.  He has made a full recovery but your incident brought back those memories to all of our family!  Get well!
No funny quip, just wishing you well.  After all, you make the TODAY show worth watching as you have for years!  a fan,
