Centenarians share enlightening encounters with Edison

From John Rutherford, Producer, NBC News, Washington

Thomas A. Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, apparently was more at ease in a laboratory than he was mingling among his employees.

Mary Fackino, 104, often saw Edison at the alkaline battery plant he owned in West Orange, N.J., but she was never able to meet him.

"I'd see him in the hallways, but he never stopped," she said recently. "He'd walk by with his head down. He was quiet. I never talked to him. He never spoke to the people in the hallway."

Mary's mother, however, knew Edison's wife.

"My mother couldn't speak English, and she wanted to learn, and Edison's wife wanted to learn how to speak Italian," she said. "But it didn't last long. It didn't work out."

Mary had gone to work for Edison in 1917 at the age of 13. Edison was not only a famous inventor, holding 1,093 patents, the most issued to any individual, but he was also an industrial leader, creating companies such as his battery plant for the manufacture and sale of his inventions.

"I had to go to work," Mary said. "My mother needed help when my father died young. I didn't even graduate grammar [school]."

One of her fingers and a thumb still ache from working on a power press at Edison's battery plant. After three years, she switched to the plant's in-house magazine, the Storage Battery News.

"I was a reporter when they took me off the factory work," she said. "The guys thought I was too good to be in a factory like that."

As a reporter, she covered the plant's Assembly and Test Department. Edison died in 1931, but Mary continued working at his plant until 1944.

"I volunteered to help in World War II," she said. "I used to write the boys, and they would write to me, and I used to send them packages. I used to knit sweaters, too. When they came back, they used to meet me. Quite a few later passed away or were killed."

Mary celebrated her 104th birthday on Oct. 8 in Mooresville, N.C., where she now lives.

Another centenarian who crossed paths with Edison was Nancy Roberg, who was on the front porch of her home in Caspian, Mich., in April 1924 when a large black car pulled up. A man rolled down the window and asked directions to the Berkshire iron mine.

"She was tickled when she recognized the man was Henry Ford, and in the car with him were Harvey Firestone and Thomas Edison, who were touring different Ford properties in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan," her daughter Mary Ann said.

Ford, Firestone and Edison were three of the most famous industrialists of their time, or of any time, for that matter. They were riding around with no police escort, not even a chauffeur. Just three (rich) friends out for a ride.

Nancy was 15 when they stopped by. She's now 100, having passed the century mark on Oct. 12 in Crystal Falls, Mich.

Mary and Nancy were two of the centenarians featured by Willard Scott on NBC's TODAY show. If you know of any centenarians who've had a brush with history over the past century, please tell us a little bit about them in the comments section below and be sure to fill in your return e-mail address so we can get back to you for more details

As Time Goes By
by Matthew Bellamy 1998
As time goes by
  sweet memories fade away
Some decide to cry
others hope for a brighter day
Cant keep asking why
but the truth will set you free
Sometimes the truth will remain unknown
then it is best to let it be
As time goes by
  the good are easily forgotten
Some good hearts whither and die
others live on, but their souls feel rotten
But who is really the judge of good and bad
it has to be the masses from the experience
  that I just had
That is right, the majority rules
is congress, church, or when dealing with small
time cats who violate thinking that it's cool
Is that not in almost all cases so so sad
As time goes by
  the wounds will heal
Some give in and never try again
other pick up the deck and deal
It is easy to rob someone of their hopes and
ambition; utilize lies, mind games, or live
  amunition
But what goes around comes around is what they say;
no matter what hand is dealt to stay in the game
one must always but ready to play
As time goes by
we realize that the past is a stepping stone
Some will continue to lie to get by
and others learn to leave liars alone
Cant keep lying and then ask for trust
Liars are like Iron and Water(Fe2 O3)equalling
  rust
Rust decays some of the most beautiful things just
as lies destroy the best of relationships even
those with the biggest wedding rings
As time goes by
  everyone has a reason
The Water Runs Dry
to some betrayal is called treason
Cant keep asking why
but the truth will set you free
Sometimes the truth will remain unknown
then it is best to let it be
Never keep asking why
it is best to let it be

and just as a reminder when you google me on the google i am the missing person(Matthew Bellamy) who is in charlotte ryte naah with my shit stolen and why would anyone want to steal something like dat

John,

Your blogs always interest me.  They bring a smile or a tear, but they always speak to my heart.

Keep up the good work.
I can not stand oprah she is not as great as people think, unless there on the recieving end...She said this is the first person she supported ok stick you foot in your mouth oprah you should be shamed of yourself......you may have money but you have no heart lady.I am happy she lost alot of her viewers because of her comments and support......
I just hear clips from MSNBC, Oberman, Matthews, Gregory & I think Campbell (No Bias, No bull?) ......you all should be in category of TEEN magazine or COMEDY with your  crass, vile EXTREMELY looney reporting.  Why don't you all shut down & move over with the other EUROPPEEEEASERS???  PLEASE, get out before you further destroy this country.
I was flipping through or driving by & watched about 10 minutes of Campbell I think comparing some wacko made-up political fight with some other horrible RACIST stories........COME ON!!!!!  The fawning & pro-Obhamas slant of reporting is beyond ghastly.  talk about TORTURE, over 5 minutes of watching bafooonery is cruel & unusual.  You all could go whine with your latte-sipping Europpeeeeeeeasers, can't you?
A MORTGAGE CRISIS SOLUTION ....I'm a Real Estate Broker in California with just a little food for though. If we could create an over view consultancy agency  which would re-qualify Existing Home Buyers of existing personal residence on their mortgage's to allow them to stay where they now house their families at a reduced mortgage payment, without a reduction on the Principle Balance, allowing the market to rebound at a later time. And if  this idea would help lesson the exodus of the American Families from their Home's and therein help stabilize the market. Then the lenders wouldn't have to take the properties back through foreclosure and eventually the lenders would be paid off. Most lenders would have to have an offset for the loss of income from the existing loan payments, this is where we become creative. We need to offer the lenders an INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT  of some sort, to help ease the loss of income during the reduction of payment period. This in my opinion would help stop the down turn in our economy and therefore restart some needed housing projects throughout our GREAT COUNTRY. In addition this type of Mortgage Paper would have value to any TAX PAYER looking for tax deductions.  If you need additional input I'll be available.  Examlpe: Homeowner's "A & B" were qualified and bought a personal residence in 2005 worth $350,000.00 with monthly payments of $2,980.00 per month P.I.T.I. included. Then in 2007 Homeowner "A" is laid off from a construction company and shortly thereafter the Homeowners are unable to make their house payments but certainly want to stay in their home. Homeowner's "A & B" seek the help of a qualified consultancy agency, recognized by the Homeowner's mortgage company to assist in a re-evaluation of the Homeowners ability to make a lower house payment and only until Homeowner's are capable of making their full monthly house payment as previously agreed. Mortgage Companies will not be required to reduce the Principle Balance, but would agree to accept a lower interest payment during the recovery period. For accepting a lower interest payment during the recovery period, the Federal Government and possibly the State Government would allow an INVESTMENT TAX CREDIT for a percentage of the forgiven interest payment, this would soften the loss of expected revenue and hopefully stabilize our housing market and bring added value to the Mortgage Notes.  Respectfully Joseph A. When I saw that Mary said "as a fair and balanced media outlet, why does NBC not report on the following". Mary here is your "News Flash"  NBC is NOT fair and balanced. NBC, CBS, MSNBC, ABC, CNN ARE Liberal Idiots that have no clue about fair and balanced. They all have their head so far up Barack Hussein Obama's ass they have no judgement and are going after the people who speak out against the democrats (liberals and Queers who want to be called gay) They will all burn in Hell together as liars, cheats and Queers ( God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve ) and I hope all their children grow up to be queers ( probably will ). As we know, we can only grow to be what our example in life teaches us. This Great Country was built by men with God, Guns and Guts and that gave us the Glory and put the Fear and respect in the rest of the World. When the Terroist are knocking on the doors of the Liberals and Queers, then they will be calling on those with Guns and Guts to save their ass. To those I say don't call me unless you need a spectator to watch the Terroist kick your ass or blow up your family. My reply will be "go out and talk to the Terroist, Im sure they will negotiate with their liberal queer ass ). But then again this could be a positive way to get rid of their stupid ass ways. What Idiots.
Great story.  Too bad most of the comments on here were about something OTHER than this story.
This country was built by people who weren't cowardly enough to let terrorists scare them into abandoning the principles upon which the country was created: freedom, democracy, and sovereignty. Maybe if you get worked up enough, you can preted that we do not live in a world built upon a global economy, and that we can isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. Maybe if you really try hard enough, you will be unable to see that your screen name is based upon a dishonest person, who gave a fake name, who isn't really a plumber, and who would actually do better under Obama's tax plan. Good luck.
I saw Joe the Plumber this morning and his statement about Marx.  That looked so rehearsed.  I am sure the McCain people are telling him waht to say over and over.  SAD.  McCain again is clueless.  His speech where he keeps say Obama wants to control wealth and he wants to spread it.  Yeah spread to his bank account and his other cronies accounts.  Spread the wealth...WEALTH...not spread out money.  Republicans only know wealth.  Have you ever sat and listened to a group of stout republicans.  They are so sure they have it all and they want to keep it all.  They don't know anything about spreading anything.  Sharing the wealth is more like it.  Sharing it among themselves.  Obama may need to control the wealth.  It is the wealthy and greedy that has gotten us into this problem.  They want more, more, more, wealth.  Obama was us ALL to share in the 'wealth'.  Sharing versus greed.  Which side are you on.
This is great information. Thanks for sharing. We need to take care of the body we have been giving daily.
Wellness & Blessings to you

What an amazing story! A very exciting time in history.
Dr. Nancy Snyderman needs to go.  Everytime I see her on the program, I want to change the channel. After her rude treatment of Matt this morning during their discussion of the causes of Autism, I will change the channel the next time I see her. She consistently belittles those who hold opinions that differ from hers. She is not a medical professional who is iterested in conversation with others; she only wants to be sure her position is put forth and dominates a conversation. I cannot bear such a personality being put forth as the spokesperson for this television program and I will not tolerate her again. I feel she owes Matt a public apology for interrupting him and not allowing him to finish what he was saying. That is nothing more than bad social etiquette.
It really irks me to see all of the media surrounding a man like Barack Hussein Obama. Of course Colin Powell is going to support him, he isn't stupid. Colin Powell follows what is popular and well who knows why else. I thought I was a stout Democrat, but in my heart of hearts, I can not with good conscience vote for Barack Hussein, I just can't. I feel like he is a wolf in sheeps clothing, I pray to God that I am wrong.
Just wondered how you get Willard Scott to acknowledge a 100 year Birthday for my Mother on TV.  She will celebrate this event on Nov. 23rd in a  Rohnert Park,Ca. Retirement home.  Her legs won't cooperate but her mind is still sharp. Living through the depression
and all the inventions during her lifetime gives cause to many memories.
I realize President Elect Obama has made history.  I don't think the media should focus so much on race.  You, the media, are making it an issue not the country.  In addition, when you MATT Laurer interviews other and say now our children we can tell them they can be anything, what about girls?

You should clarify this point.  And give more attention to how the media helped destroy women in the white house (candidates on both sides) to help elect Obama because you, the media, wanted to make a statement about race.  Why don't you give gender as much attention as race?
Or did you wanted to support Europe's wishes in this election.  It would be nice to know the truth behind your bias views.
I am happy to support our president because he is our president.  End of story.  It is not about race.  You the media make it about race.  Clearly that is your agenda.  Just think of the dis-service you did to American girls & women by not giving them enough attention.  It is always an after thought when you talk about making history.  I hope you did not do this country a dis-service by supporting so strongly a one sided congress & administration.  I hope the american people do not get lost in the democratic agenda.  We want Obama to be the voice of the people, not the first black president or a democrat.  You as the media need to support the people more rather than your own agenda that get you more money and viewers.
History was made with the election of Obama as President of the United States, however the media keeps referring to him as an African American and let me remind you that he is just as much white American as Black, not that it makes any difference to me. Let me remind you that he is a American with a black father who was not involved with his up-bring. He was raised by his white mother and Grandmother. Lets make history today and stop reminding Americans of Color. Obama was elected by majority of whites as well as black, all being Americans. I am a white voter who voted for Obama because of his values and fresh ideals and the enthusiasm he brings. I only hope he is judged as a American and not for his color. Why must we keep talking about the issue of color?

I don't have time to try and find the appropriate place to write this so I am just going to write here......I am sick and tired of hearing about our first African American President.  He is  our president...drop the rest...it's irritating.  Actually he is a biracial or interracial so either say it correctly or drop it.  He ran as an african american because it gained him votes.  I did not ote for him but race had nothing to do with it...I wasn't actually impressed with toe McCain package but I picked the lesser of two evils...not sure evils is the word I want to use but you get my drift.  I am whit and some of my best friends in high school and college were "african americans"  my roommate in college was "interracial"  Indian/Black and she was very light skinned and would of been mistaken for possibly being mexican....she grew up in a community where she said the other black kids really didn't want her to be a part of their group because she wasn't dark enough.  Back to my point....Obama is just as much white as he is black so either call him the President or the biracial President.......call it what it is.  It's things like this that keep racism stirred up.  All you high powered, well educated, important, financially well off people keep racism stirred up way more than the rest of us who live in this country.  You all need to get over it.......seems to me alot of us little people have been over it for a long time.  Had to vent....I vented. Thanks.
I am a 50 year old working American woman and I can't believe you continue to hound the McCain/Palin campaign. I turn on the Today Show and almost the first story is about Sarah Palin's wardrobe, shame on you NBC Today, Get Over IT! President Elect Obama wants change and even though I didn't vote for him I will stand behind him and hope and pray for a better America and I hope to see the networks concentrate on issues worth talking about not the gossip we expect from Hollywood tabloids.
All I ask is that the media stop covering Governor Palin. Let her go away and just focus on Alaska and hopefully she will pick-up a book and read it.  Let her fade into obscurity.

What is more disturbing about those few that can't see past race is if the tables were turned and if the candidate for VP was African-American with just one degree; a Bachelors in Journalism no less, and had a "typical" pregnant teenage daughter, and could not coherently answer questions what would the dialogue have been then? Honestly when McCain (and shame on him) selected Palin they should have given her a test on basic world affairs.  Although I am a news enthusiast and I do read as well view online and via television, I could have answered Charles Gibson's questions much better than Palin. Forget Katie Couric's interview, those questions were so easy it was ridiculous. The "estblishment" should not have needed to stuff her with facts, she should have come to the table with basic knowledge. McCain failed with his selection and his judgement was beyond repair. Tim Pawlenty or Mitt Romney would have really made the overall outcome tighter although I believe that Obama is THE BEST person for this time; on both domestic and international fronts.

So for all of the hatas out there get over yourselves. Obama has 2 degrees from two of the best schools in the world!  In addition Biden has atleast 2 himself. This ticket was the best educated and the best informed!  Let's not forget that.
This is off topic and I couldn't find anywhere else to ask.  Why has there been no mention of Obama's grandmother's funeral?  Every day I expect to hear of him and his family traveling to Hawaii for her funeral.  I've heard no mention of her since her death.  Has he forgotten her already?
you r gay
My son was in Iceland last year and he swam in some kind of hot spring. How is this possible when it is so cold there?
