Survivor: Cancer was an ‘odd blessing’

Kathy Brickman, the 66-year-old winner of “Everyone Has a Story,” has a particularly interesting and inspiring tale: she credits breast cancer for “saving her life.” A few years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but when she went in for testing, doctors found something even more alarming – stage-4 lung cancer. No one thought she would live long, but she managed to beat both cancers, and this Thursday, she will celebrate her victory with TODAY.

“Cancer can knock your socks off,” Kathy said, “but once you catch your breath, you realize there is so much hope – you should never let go of that.”  Watch video

Learn more about Kathy’s journey by reading her winning essay:

"Everyone has a story" – my goodness! I hear that phrase all the time, because I am a cancer survivor and survivors can all relate to that phrase.

My story began in January 2005, when I was diagnosed with the earliest stage of breast cancer. Easy. Have a lumpectomy, some radiation and be cured. Even so, there's nothing like the word "cancer" to knock your socks off.

My husband and I planned to go to Florida early in February, so my lumpectomy was scheduled later in the month, after our return. I had the usual blood work, an EKG and a chest X-ray during the week before the Sunday we were to leave. The surgeon's office called on Friday to say there was an abnormality in my lung and I needed a cat scan. The CAT scan was done that same day. My oncologist called and said she would push for the results on Saturday because she did not want us to go to Florida with that hanging over our heads. She called again Saturday evening to say we would not be going to Florida and that I needed a biopsy on Monday. Tuesday evening we met with her and learned that I have stage-4 lung cancer. The breast cancer was put on hold. I have always said "God bless the breast cancer." I had no symptoms of lung cancer and would not have found it expect for the breast cancer. Scary. You would think your body would tell you.

It has been over three and a half years and I have beaten the odds so far. In fact, my surgeon told me that when I was diagnosed, no one thought I would live very long, so the breast cancer was a non-issue. But since I fooled them, I had to have a mastectomy this month to take care of the breast cancer. Now I can forget about that little pest.

People I come in contact with tell me that my attitude is terrific. All I know is that although I would never wish cancer on anyone, it has been a sort of an odd blessing for me. The other patients I have met during chemo are the most wonderful people. It's almost like we belong to this private club that no one wants to join. We don't sweat the small stuff anymore. And I realize how this cancer thing isn't just mine, it belongs to my whole family -- my husband, our son and daughter, grandchildren, my sisters and then to my wide circle of friends. I am so fortunate to have such support.

No one is promised tomorrow. We need to fill our days with hugs and lots of laughter.

Tune in to TODAY this Thursday for a musical performance inspired by Kathy's essay.

"Everyone has a Story" was so poignant. Kathie Lee, you were so sweet to Mrs. Brinkman. Kathie Lee, why wouldn't you toast the ladies? Have you stopped drinking? Where is Cody going to college? Happy anniversary to you and Frank!
This story portrays a double miracle from God.

I would also like to know how I can get a Hoda and Kathie Lee coffee cup.  It looks really cool on TV.
Thank you so much for that beautiful segment on Kathy's breast cancer story, and especially for that beautiful song "No One Is Promised Tomorrow". How can I get a copy of that song? My husband committed suicide 10 years ago and since then I have had a bout with breast cancer.  The song covers it all.  I would love to pass it one to my adult children.
This feature is absolutly the best feature on TV. There is soooooo much wrong in our world today...this
is right no matter how you look at it....Kathie Lee,

Thank you
Thank you all for giving me the sign I was looking for.  On Tuesday my 36 year old son (who has Angelman Syndrome) went in for treatment for his colon cancer. We just recently found that it has spread to his liver after 1 1/2 years of cancer treatments.  His cancer has spread inspite of the all the treatments availabe and is stage 4.  Because he is disabled and unaware of his illness, I had to make the decision whether we were going to continue on with treatments or stop since we have not been able to see any improvements.  Last week his doctor told me she would study his charts all weekend and get back to me.  Her decision was to try one last combination of treatments and it was going to have to be my final decision whether we would continue the treatments.  I prayed for a sign and the following morning I watched Kathy's story and I feel that it was the answer to my prayers.  Thank you all for the encouragement to go on!
Everyone has a story has been great so far you can't help but to be touched by the stories. Hoda I just want to say thank you also for your story. In July 08 I was told that I had 2 lumps in my breasts after a mammogram and an ultrasound I was told that I needed a biopsy. I just turned 40 this year and lost my grandmother in June 08 who had colon cancer and was on dialysis. Loosing her was still on my mind and, I had to wait over a month for my biopsy and in waiting I had lots and lots of time for all kinds of thoughts to take over my mind. I had times of tears and times of prayer. One day I didn't know what to do so,I went to the Today Show website because I remembered that Hoda talked about her breast cancer I found all the video that she did about her battle and it really helped me to just put things into perspective. I finally had my biopsy and it wasn't cancer it was a fiberoadenoma. My prayers and the prayers of my church members who prayed for me had been answered. I know that God answers prayer. Looking at Hoda's story was a blessing to me during a time when I felt like I didn't know what I would do if it were cancer. I'm still not completely out of the woods yet because I have to go back in 6 months to have the other lump check and to be recheck from the biopsy but, seeing all the stories has truly helped me it is wonderful to see people like Kathy Brickman and Hoda turn a negative like breast cancer into something positive.  Thank you Today Show and thank you Hoda for listening to the man on the air plane who told you that you have to tell your story. Also I noticed that Hoda is wearing a pink band on her finger where did you get that? I would love to get one as well. Thanks again.

Where can I find a copy of the song that was sung at the end of the segment with Kathy Brickman, it was inspiring?
Kathie Lee, we're so happy to see you back on tv everyday!  "Everyone has a Story" showcases your God given talent in such an inspiring way.  Don't hesitate to mention God on tv and in your songs because He is good and does good regardless of what life throws at us.  (Psalm 119:68)
