Dara Torres: 2012 Olympic Games a 'possibility'

Dara Torres finished second in the women's 50m freestyle at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
After winning three silver medals in Beijing at the age of 41, swimmer Dara Torres swore the only way she would be at the 2012 Olympics was as a commentator.

Just over a month later, however, the only American swimmer to compete in five Olympic Games is already showing signs of changing her tune about a sixth.

“I don’t think I’m done swimming,” Torres said after appearing on Wednesday’s TODAY (video).

Torres underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery at the end of August, and was back in the water two weeks later.  Many of her teammates, including Cullen Jones, Brendan Hansen and Aaron Peirsol, who appeared with her on TODAY, have yet return to the pool.

“Normally, after the Olympics I don’t want to get near the water,” Torres said.  “But I don’t have that feeling like I’m done.”

Torres, who will be 45 at the London Games, says that’s “a little old.” But at 41 she is still the fastest American woman in the 50 m freestyle, having set that record in Beijing.  She took silver in that race, just .01 seconds behind German Britta Steffen.  She also won silver in the 4x100 freestyle and 4x100 medley relays -- an impressive feat for anyone, let alone a 41-year-old mother.

Still, for the ultra-competitive Torres, having taken silver rather than gold might mean she has unfinished business.

“I don’t know yet,” she said.  “We’ll see what happens.”

Dara Torres is just a total babe!!!   Beautiful, great personality, courageous, patriotic, everything great rolled up into one.
Does she have anything else to do?
just goes to show you -- its not that it can't be done -- its that no one ever tries.  Kudos to her for not only trying but blowing itout of the park!
Quit counting and just do it!
Dara Torres, like Sara Palin, is a real inspiration to women of all ages. We just need more of them.
you go girl!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a WONDERFUL example of the Olympic Spirit that the WORLD will salute!  GO Dara 2012!  May the AMERICAN OLYMPIC SPIRIT be with you!  GODSPEED!
I agree with topgumm, Dara is absolutely terrific.  However, while I admire her sand, for her sake, I wish she would pursue something else more interesting and rewarding.
she was so great in these olympic games, i'd say why not to her in another one.
Move on and give someone else a chance.  When she qualifies she is preventing someone else from realizing their dreams.
I agree with Hammer..quit counting and just freaking do it. You say yourself Ms. Dara that the water doesn't know your age but you keep bringing up that fact that you'll be 45 in 2012..who cares?? Do lawyers, doctors, construction workers retire at 41? Why should you feel the need to quit if you still have it (and you definitely do) just because societies "average joe" says you should? Keep rockin' girlfriend. You are totally hot and the coolest!!
she is amazing
GO DARA 2012!! She was my role model as a swimmer back in my day and continues to be for all she has achieved.... She is NOT preventing anyone else from their dreams.. they are jsut not as good as she is, plain and simple. The water does NOT know your age, onyl you do.. its about your connection to yourself and your dream and that burning in your gut... I would LOVE see her in (hiopefully) Chicago 2016 but that is a loooong stretch... you got it in you, keep doing it.
