11 questions for Meghan McCain

Posted: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 10:43 AM by Jen Brown

After Meghan McCain spoke with Meredith (video) about the new children’s book she’s written about her father and about working to help her dad reach the White House, we sat down with the would-be first daughter to talk about everything besides politics. Meghan, who writes candidly about her experiences on her blog, was an open book when it came to dishing on campaign fashion, revealing her Decision ’08 crush, helping her dad become tech savvy and (possibly) sharing nachos with fellow Columbia alum Barack Obama after he appears with John McCain in New York on Thursday.

Below are excerpts from our conversation:

Q: Since you’re here talking about your new book, “My Dad, John McCain,” let’s start with a question about your dad.  A lot of our viewers want to know: What’s your fondest memory of your dad on the campaign trail?
A: That’s a tough one … every day is fun. In the beginning, when I first started campaigning, there was this hotel that didn’t have an elevator and had lots of stairs, and he carried my friends’ and my bags up and down the stairs, which they still love (laughs). He was like, “You girls shouldn’t be carrying your bags.”  Now there are people that help out. There’s a person who is in charge of everyone’s luggage, so we don’t have to do that anymore.

Q: Switching gears here: Are you still thinking of going into fashion design after the campaign?
A: Possibly. I think I want to go into fashion when this is over. I think I spend an overly significant portion of my life taking things that I have access to and showing them to other people. I’d really like to do something like Jessica Simpson’s done, taking high-end things and making them accessible to everyone. I have so many things in my life that -- because of who my dad is -- I have more availability to, and I’d like to make that available to the masses. It’s what I think I’ve done with the blog.

Q: Who do you think is the best dressed on the campaign trail...besides yourself?

A:  My mother. We have really different looks, but I love the way my mom dresses. I just think it’s very classy and first lady-esque. I just think she looks beautiful all the time.

Democratic National ConventionQ: It’s only fair, since we asked all the Olympians who their Olympic crush was … who is your Decision ’08 crush?
A: Do you know who’s cute is Luke Russert. I just met him at the convention. He’s a cute guy, and he’s very nice.

Q: Sticking to the random theme of this conversation, what’s on your must-see list for television this season?
A: I’m addicted to reality television.  I love “I Love New York.” At the end of the day, all I want is brainless television, period. I just don’t want to think about it, I don’t want to watch newsreels. We watch them on the bus and on the plane. We watch news all the time. It’s always serious … At the end of the day I just want brainless television. I really like  VH1, I really like “Rock of Love.”

Q: Do you watch it with your dad?
A: No, but I watch it with my friends.

Q: Are you helping your dad become more savvy with the Internet?
A: Yes. Actually, we bought him a Mac  Air. That was my Father’s Day gift to him, in addition to registering as a Republican. I think it’s been very overblown, how technologically behind he is. He knows how to pull up the New York Times on his computer, and I’ve got him texting now too. I know that’s not so savvy, but …

NYC - Morningside Heights: Tom's Restaurant by wallyg.Q: Your dad is coming to Columbia this week to appear with Barack Obama for a Service Nation event. Since you went to Columbia, where are you looking forward to taking your dad around your old stomping ground?
A: The Hamilton Deli, it’s where I used to eat every meal. I also really love Tom’s. That was my dad’s favorite thing about Columbia -- that it was by Tom’s Restaurant. He used to tell everyone, “Meghan and I ate at the ‘Seinfeld’ restaurant!” He could have taken me to Nobu, but we went to the ‘Seinfeld’ restaurant (laughs).

Q: Since Barack Obama went to Columbia as well, can you see the two of you sharing some nachos at The Heights after the event?
A: I don’t know if his campaign would want that, but I would love to if he wanted to!

Q: Speaking of nachos, how’s the food on the campaign trail?
A: Terrible. TERRIBLE! I eat pizza for breakfast. I’ve gained so much weight, which isn’t even that big of an issue. I’m not totally health-food conscious, but I have a friend that’s a vegan and another friend who’s on the macrobiotic diet and I’m like, “I have Snickers and Diet Coke for breakfast, then Swedish Fish for lunch and then pizza and pasta for dinner.” So I don’t know why I’m gaining weight (laughs).

Q: Last question: What do you think is the best quality you inherited from your dad?
A: Not apologizing for speaking your mind. My parents never made me censor myself, and I love that about my parents. Being in politics, that’s kind of rare, especially with children. I meet a lot of political kids who have a wall up, and they feel like they have to act a certain way. I’m always who I am, which is why I think people have related to the blog. I’m not afraid to say things like “I’m not a size zero, I have bad days.” It’s complicated, what I’m doing, but I love my friends and I love my dad.

Thank you Meghan McCain for making yourself available for interviews like this.  Your openness and honesty and so welcome in this tough campaign! Your kind nature, respect for your parents, and wellspoken manner are a wonderful testament to John and Cindy McCain! One more good reason to vote for John McCain.
Thank you TODAY SHOW for having Meghan on, and Meredith your interviews are awesome!
Thanks for a first hand glimpse into John McCain! You can always find out how someone is by asking them what its like growing up. I was deeply impressed Meghan and I hope your fashion dreams come true!

Vote for John McCain!!!
I think Meghan and Luke Russert would be an awesome couple!  Why don't you guys help out with the matchmaking?
Meghan you sound like a chip off the old block I served with your dad on the Forrestal 1967 I also got to talk to him here in maryland and had him sign his picture in my cruise book I pray he will be our next president can't wait to read your book
I was never crazy about John McCain as our president.  But I am starting to learn John as another person through Meghan's upbringing.  It just shows how John will conduct nation's business and treat people when he becomes president.  One vote from me.
Meghan McCain is an example of the tolerance her father has for other points of view. Sounds like she inherited the straight talk gene.
I would also like to see a Today Show interview with award-winning children's book author Nikki Grimes about her book "Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope," which is now #5 on the New York Times Bestselling Picture Books list.
I could have read 111 questions!!!! The whole family is fabulous!

MCCAIN/PALIN O8
Meghan,

You are truly a wisp of fresh air and open honesty.  I admire you for sticking to/with your free spirit of expression versus caving in to the ways of American political norms and becoming someone or something that you are not.  So go out there and beat the dank out of normal status quo.  Go girl go!!
did Meghan state that she was pro choice on the today show?
I enjoyed  seeing Meghan this am on the view.  A
wonderful girl who came from a wonderful family. This
election to me is a Hero against a Zero!
Megan, I admire you for speaking your mind. And my salute to your mother (Cindy)who always do chartiy work but never brag about it or the media is so bias they don't want to publish it.  Wake up America....and vote for McCain/Palin ticket.
Meghn, What do you want to do for a life long career?
Do you have a degree?  What college did you attend?
You mention fashion degree is that area you have studied?
Megan,
What a breath of fresh air, maintain your style and stay the course. another vote for Mr McCain.
Wow, John McCain knows how to pull up the New York Times on the Intertubes! Way to go, Big Mac!
Too bad Meghan isn't running instead of her father. She sounds like a young lady with a good head on her shoulders.
What a positive young woman you are!!!!! Go McCain!
I think I need to buy a book!!!!

I am so glad you shared what your dad said about "....if Meghan were preganat at 14"...  That showed me what type of man he is. I have watched him for years.  I first registered to vote in 1971 as a emocrat and have been one until this year--I registered Republican and am voting Republican.
Pretty like her mother!  How wonderful that she is actively campaigning for her father.  I would like to see her more on the different TV networks and possibly making rounds at the different college campuses.
Our whole family is proud of our JOHN,PALIN and now
MISS MCCAIN..SHE DID ANOUTSTANDING JOB ON THE VIEW.
I am quite impressed by this interview! I appreciate parents who do not censor their children.  I might not completely agree with politicians(esp. this year), I am always impressed when their children have a mind of their own and set great examples for them.  This goes to all four men and lady in the race right now.  Kudos Meaghan and to your parents for raising you to be you!
Meghan McCain seems very real in this interview, I like her style. I just wonder if you will be interviewing Obama's daughters as well, or restrict the media hype to just one of the two potential first families.
She said "No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period."
You gotta be kidding me.
Meghan McCain represents herself and the McCain family very well.
Wow. The more you get to know the McCains... the classier they look. They don't talk about themselves much but character ALWAYS shows through. John and Cindy McCain have it... and Meghan gets it from them.
I'd be interested in interviews with McCain's children from his previous marriage.  It'd be interesting to hear what their views of their father are.
Yes. Let's elect the old man based on glowing commnts from his daughter. No qualifications necessary -- just image. That seems to be what the GOP has made this election about.
I like this interview, Meghan McCain does come across real. These children are under a lot of pressure to perform and she seems to maintain a sense of self. It might not be fair to have the same expectations on the children of the candidates as we should of the candidates themselves. But for someone who has had this much opportunity and access to education, Meghan takes only a slight lead over the spoiled and culturally removed Bush twins.
All of John McCain's children have maintained good relationships with him.
While I don't agree with John McCain's overall political views or the direction he would like to keep the country going (rather than a different direction to take it), I can respect the man, and I totally respect Meghan McCain for being herself and supporting her father on the campaign trail.  Good for you!  :)
Hi Meghan , You have a great family and your family in the White House will be good for our nation.
Cereal for breakfast would be a better choice for breakfast.
his other children from his first marriage probably don't have very nice things to say about him
I want to hear from Bridgette Mc Cain,Why is it she doesn"t get to talk? she appears to be the stranger in the house. If she has developmental problems so what? It hasn't stopped Palin from using this tract.
The McCain and Palin families are outstanding in every sense. I am voting McCain/Palin for our next leaders.  These two candidates are true Americans putting the good of the citizens before themselves.  God be with us in this election, save us from a Socialist Government.
Obama's kids are a little too young I think to sit for an interview...
Wonderful job on the interview Meghan.  I am glad you did not limit the questions on the View like Michelle Obama did and that instead you were candid.  Looking forward to buying a book and keep up the positive attitude.
John and Cindy McCain are what Americans are all about. Both have true Grit!  I met Meghan's mom and dad at a New Hampshire Town Hall.  He has the strongest hand shake and looks you straight in the eyes and thanks you for taking the time to hear what he has to say. And your mom is just a beautiful lady and such a great humanitarian. And Meghan you are a wonderful credit to your parents. Can hardly wait to buy your book.
Meghan McCain came to the defense of her father as would be expected. She implied that her family is the only family that knows about the effects of war, period. I take offense at that Ms McCain. As the mother of a soldier who has done two tours of duty in Iraq I know full well what it's like. Try watching your son and his wife go off to war leaving behind to small children, one with special needs. Or better yet, imagine finally being able to talk to your child while he's in a war zone and hear the sirens go off in the background, and suddenly he has to duck for cover. Senator McCain and his family know about war and the devasting effects on families, but they don't hold all claims to those feelings. I don't think Meghan gets it either.
I'm VOTEING FOR McCain.  "Non sibi sed patriae (Not self but country)"
Great interview, great girl but still Obama/Biden 08
Meghan is a wonderful representative for our generation - intelligent, interested, and involved in the future of our country. She may not run for political office, but she certainly leads by example nonetheless.

Check out her blog for clarification on her comment regarding her family and the war.  As the sister of an active duty service member in Iraq, I can tell you I knew what she meant - that the family of those that serve know war better than others. We live it.  She didn't mean HER family alone as she explained.

Did Meghan McCain really say "No one knows what war is like other than my family"?  I would like to remind her that thousands of families KNOW what war is like! Her family has a happy ending. My brother-in-law was shot down in Vietnam in July of 1968.  Our family is still wating for his return!
He (John McCain)was like, “You girls shouldn’t be carrying your bags.”  Now there are people that help out. There’s a person who is in charge of everyone’s luggage, so we don’t have to do that anymore." Oh how sweeeeeet ~ you have people. The McPains are so down to earth.
One thing for sure is that Cindy will be the best looking 1st lady in history. She is always looking classy.
I thought "families" are to be "off limits."
What do you think about the jokes about your fathers age. I am sisty seven and got a assosiates degree at sixty five and plam on ggetting my Bachlers in human services. I respect your additude and also your fathers . He has my vote
wow, I love a good distraction! Thanks MSNBC for feeding me full of puff and powder so I don't have to think about the failing economy, two wars, international strife, and above all who is actually qualified to run the country...

No disrespect to M. McCain. I am sure she is a nice girl. I just want a press that asks tough questions so I can make an informed choice instead of running this BS...

Gee, Thanks!
Always been a McCain fan, and thrilled others are seeing the real man and not the trumped up muck from the Democrat side. Go! McCain-Palin!!
I didn't see the interview, but after reading the posts about it, you must have been great!  My family and I are all voting for McCain/Palin!!!  And yes, your mother knows how to dress.  What's with the floral print dresses and lack of class with Michelle Obama?  Your mother and Sarah Palin out do her by far!  We're seriously praying to God that your dad will win this election.  If he doesn't, this country is in serious trouble.  Keep up the good work!!
It is so sad that so many people cannot see past these personalities and look at the issues. The fact that McCain has an apparently appealing daughter should not distract from the cold hard fact that he does not have any real plans to solve the very real problems of this country.
