Matt and Al: First synchro, then the luge, now...

From Al Roker, TODAY anchor

It’s become a tradition for Matt and me to learn a new sport at each Games.  In Athens, we almost drowned trying to compete with the synchronized swimming team...

....and in Torino we risked life and limb when we got on the luge together:

So the bar was pretty high coming into Beijing, where I was tasked with choosing our next adventure into Olympic competition.

I eliminated anything involving guns and shooting right away. (Talk about Hindenburg potential!) Equestrian was out; I’d rather ride an elephant than a horse. And track and field?  Now that’s just laughable.

I settled on rhythmic gymnastics, where the greatest physical danger is death by embarrassment.

We got some expert help from Canadian Alexandra Orlando, the only North American to qualify in rhythmic gymnastics for the Olympics. They call her “Alex the Great” in Canada, and after a few hours in the gym, it was easy to see why. She makes twirling those ropes and ribbons and hoops look easy. It is not. Trust me.

After a few hours with Alex the Great, we were “ready” for the big time. Let me tell you, Matt and I put on a performance unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. In fact, I’m not even going to try to describe it.  You’ll have to watch with your own eyes. WATCH VIDEO HERE

So, what did I learn from this whole experience? One, I know what it feels like to be a sausage (see photo of our uniforms). Two, rhythmic gymnastics has reinforced my belief that the sports that look the easiest are actually the hardest. And three, it’s a great sport with a lot of growth potential. It’s already big in Asia, and if our performance doesn’t send the world of rhythmic gymnastics into a downward spiral, I think it’s really going to catch on.

You two were soooooo funny this morning!  I laughed so hard, I cried.  Good job Matt and Al!
Matt and Al, I must commend you for trying these new sports, but I must say your attempt at the rhythmic gymnastics might be your best attempt yet. I was laughing so hard I almost choked on my morning coffee and it was the funniest thing i've seen...well since last nights re-run of King of Queens. I can see Brian Williams is a big fan also. You have the best morning show on TV. Keep up the great work. Could ya work in a kiss for Meredith for me between the ribbon work??
I wasn't sure you guys were going to top the luge but I stand corrected.  This is awsome.  I do have one question:  judging by the training clips you guys were having a great time poking fun at yourselves.  How did you get through the routine without cracking up?  That's the most amazing part.
But my favorite part was watching Brian Williams, waiting patiently -- and maybe a little disdainfully -- for his turn with the ribbon on a stick!
Thanks for the laughs (sparing us your Beach Volleyball uniforms).
Hey, there's always single sculls (1x) Men or Weightlifting for the next Games.
Hi, Matt and Al.  I'm a Rhythmic Gymnast with North Shore Rhythmics in Illinois.  Thanks for choosing our sport this year.  You're right.  Rhythmic is a lot harder than it looks!  You guys did great!  You just need a little more practice.
My favorite part of the Olympic coverage on the Today show is when Al and Matt "compete" in an Olympic sport. How you keep a straight face, I'll never know. How brave you both are to put on those costumes. Nice job guys! P.S. The luge is still my favorite.
Matt and Al were hilarious this morning. I laughed so much I almost cried!!!
That was the great. I give you at 10. I laughted so hard, I was crying. You guys were so serious and it was great, nice landing.
Just watched and have to say it was the funniest, most bold and courageous performance. Now that ranks as an Olympic Games Classic...it was Saturday Night Live worthy.
I did not think Matt and Al could top synchronized swimming, but they did!  I loved the rhythmic gymnastics spot!  Well done!  A gold medal for entertainment value.  Way to go guys!
OMG...I just watched Matt & Al's "Rythmic Gymnastics" and I must say it was halarious!  I just love the Today Show because they know how to have a good time!  You made my day watching that!  I just loved the serious, focused faces...what wonderful concentration they had in their performance.  Keep up the good work guys!
Matt and Al syncro was hysterical this morning!  I have never seen them so funny together!
You guys were fabulous. The vision of you two will make house cleaning a much better experience today. I have never laughed so hard. Your display of rhythm and grace far exceed anything you have ever done. Thank you so much for warming my heart, and causing true pain in my side with out of control laughter.
You two are hilarious!! When your laying down and the hoops drop over your feet!  I am still laughing!  I can hardly wait for Vancouver!  Thanks for the fun!
I watched the performance of Al and Matt this morning.  It was really quite good and you guys looked great in your outfits! Having Al and Matt showcase their athletic ability is something to look forward to in the Olympics.    Al, you chose a great sport to highlight.
Thank you Al and Matt. I began my day with a hugh smile because of your performance?  I do not usually laugh at things on tv, but this segment was extremely funny.
Great job, I've never laughed so hard but you are both great sports and I can tell you love your jobs!
Keep up the good work!
Worthy of Youtube!

You and Matt are too cute!  You brought a smile to my face as I chuckled watching the two of you.  I was most impressed at how you both kept a straight face during your performance!  You all genuinely seem to have a great time together--and graciously bring the rest of us along for the ride! Bravo!
I've never been a rhythmic gymnastics fan but I can appreciate the dedication of any athlete who trains for years to reach the olympic level. Watching Al and Matt perform was distubing on so many levels.
Matt and Al's rhythmic gymnastics routine was HILARIOUS!!  My one question is:  How did they keep a straight face?
GOOOOO ALEX!!!!! love, cousin Lauren!
Somebody buy those guys a beer!!!!!!!!!!!
HA!!! LOVE IT!!!
There are no words that can even begin to capture an Olympic feat of this magnitude!!  The world of sports will never be the same.  Michael who???
OMG!!!I have never laughed so hard, but this doesn't beat the JLO outfit that Matt wore one year for Halloween.  Really, you guys were great and it was fun to watch.  Enjoy the rest of the Olympics.
I just have to tell you how funny Matt & Al's rhythmic gymnastics was this morning!  I have watched the Today Show for many years and saw their escapades on the luge, synchronized swimming, etc., but this was the best one ever!  Give those boys 2 gold medals!
What?  Are you anti-gun, too?  With proper training, you and Matt could do worse!
It was a delight to watch you and Matt this morning.  You guys seem to enjoy having fun like this as much as I enjoy seeing it.
I've seen the synchro swimming which was highly amusing, and the luge nearly had me asphyxiated with hysterics, but this...I have no words. So overwhelmed with emotion for the grace and beauty, I couldn't even react.

Kinda like watching a bungee jump. Looks terrifying, but no one got hurt.
Keep your day jobs.
Oh please! I just could not watch Matt & Al attempting
rhythmic gymnastics. I love you guys but that was just plain sad!
Al and Matt you made me "SMILE" watching your gymnastics floor routine.  Thank you.  Jennifer Minnesota
Matt & Al,

Again, the Today Show Has done a fantastic job.  Your story on Rhythmic Gymnastics was spellbinding.  In this day and age, it is quite refreshing to see two grown men, not afraid to poke fun at themselves.  You guys do a great job in your serious and not so serious journalist activities.  It is a nice change of pace to see that you have the courage to do these kind of stories.  It was especially funny to see Brian Williams get involved in this also.  Thanks again for all of your hard work.  We Americans are very pround of you and the work that the entire Today Show puts on everyday.  You are wonderful representatives of the American people, and you should be proud of the jobs that you do.
Thanks again, and keep up the great work.
So funny, thanks for giving me a good laugh this morning!  My two year old daughter said, "Oh, Mommy, those boys are really good!"  Her favorite part of the Olympics is watching the "magicsticks" (gymnastics), mine is waiting to see what Matt & Al come up with!
Al and Matt, I watch the today show almost religiously!  I've seen you do a lot of crazy things on TV.  I laughed when I watched you do the luge and the sychronized swimming!  Guys, to do what you did to rhythmic gymnastics was beautifully......painful!  Thanks for giving us, that are not athletic, hope!  You keep up the good work!  My day wouldn't be the same without the today show "family!"
Too funny, these guys are amazing athletes!
If you had pointed your toes on  the final pose as the hoops descended from the stratosphere - I would have given you the Gold.  Overall, good performance but I would keep your day job.
Al
I have to say first that I never written a blog to anyone before and this urge to write was undoubtedly, jumpstarted by the airing of your jymnastic debut, with Matt this morning on the Today show.

While I have never been known to stay so glued, to the olympic floor excersizes before, You and Matt have changed my view of the floor excersizes forever.

The grace and coordination by which you guys seem to move, in a sendom ever seen syncronization, has left me speechless!

Talk about your gold metal performances!

It was really worth being a little late for work this morning.

Moved to write,

Andre` Tramble

P.S. I have to tell you that I will never see the gymnastic floor events quite the same again!

   :)
Al and Matt, as a devoted Today show watcher, I have to say that this morning's rhythmic gymnastic's routine was absolutely hilarious.  The tears were streaming down my face.  Absolutely brilliant.
Nice work Al and Matt! You done us American's proud!!! Perhaps in four years you will qualify for the London summer Olympics in Rhythmic Gymnastics! Train hard and watch out for Brian Williams...
I laughed so hard I was in tears.  This is a classic, for sure!!
You looked maaaaahvelous! Hahahaha!
Just watched the video. Simply brilliant. One of the greatest laughs I've had all week! Thanks for the best alternative to world events and politics! Can't wait to see what happens in 2010 - perhaps, with the grace just shown, you will be ready for ice dancing!
You guys are so funny. Hammy but funny!  Love it
Al and Matt - Oh my gosh - I just watched your video - I haven't laughed that hard in YEARS! You guys are very brave to actually put that on the internet. Congratulations on your rhythymic debut - it was fabulous.
omg that is the supidest and funnest thing i have seen in a long time.
So graceful, so beautiful. But my favorite was the shot of Brian Williams patiently (maybe disdainfully) waiting on the sidelines, in uniform, for his chance to shine.
Y'all crack me up! It was so fun to watch you this morning. You made me late for work. Looking forward to 2010 Winter Olympics. Maybe couples skating?
