Standing up to cancer

Posted: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 8:00 AM by Jen Brown

(From Tammy Fine, TODAY producer)

I remember exactly where I was when my mother first told me she was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was just home from college for Thanksgiving vacation.  We were on the way home from the airport, and she told me on that car ride. I cried the whole way home.

I remember exactly where I was when I first learned my father was diagnosed with Lung Cancer. I was in Minnesota, on a bus following Jesse Ventura on one of his "get out and meet the voters" tours. As important as my work was to me, I couldn't wait to get on the airplane and get to my family. I cried the whole way home.

C-A-N-C-E-R.  It's such a short, simple word, and yet it has the power to scare like few others. And while diagnostics and treatments have improved, there is so much more to do. Sadly, few people make it through life without being touched by Cancer.

I always felt lucky. I lived through my parents battles, and, more importantly, they did too.
But in January when I had to try to explain to my 3-year-old twins why I was going to the hospital, and now, five months later, why Mommy has mastectomy scars on her breasts, I can't help but wonder if these the conversations that will be passed down generation to generation in my family? Will we all be touched by this dreaded disease in some way?

I'm not sure, but there is one thing I know. We are a family that survived cancer. And that survival has to count for something, because as scary as a cancer diagnosis can be, the fact that so many people are living with it, instead of dying from it, is an important fact.

That is why today's announcement by the NBC, ABC and CBS networks to join together and air a broadcast special on September 5, 2008, "Stand Up To Cancer," is such a wonderful development. If these networks can harness their power to fund raise, educate and motivate people to fight on, it's something we should applaud, celebrate and participate in --  the fact that together we all can make a difference.

5/28/08 Thank you for this effort. I have uterine cancer and my son was just diagnosed with testicular cancer two weeks ago. I only hope that someone, somewhere will find a cure soon...for all of us.
Its great to see influential people taking a stand for causes that have effected our lives for centuries. Personally I have had three immediate family members pass from this horrible disease. That is why my children and I and our school are teaming up May 31st, June 1st and June 4th for "Operation Lemonade" to raise money for Pediatric Cancer all over the U.S. This campaign began with a 4 year old little girl having a dream to help find a cure for cancer. Although, we personally didn't know her she has been an inspiration all over our country. R.I.P. Alex  One girl's vision everyone's mission. Thank you.

What was the intent of CBS and NBC to have the 3 network news anchors on the 3 morning shows?  Was it to promo. new and needed funding for cancer research, or was it to "Bash Bush" for the Iraq war?
The folks at ABC made them stay with the subject and
did so with compassion for the subject matter.
Cancer affects our lives in so many ways -losing loved ones, fathers, mothers, siblings, husbands, wives, seeing them suffer through painful treatments, financially, emotionally and physically draining. Patients and caregivers have their lives taken over by this disease.
My husband has been fighting brain cancer for 13 years, 6 surgeries, numerous chemos and now on hospice care.
Thankyou, thankyou for doing something about this. Our presidential candidates can raise millions in a few weeks -surely we can surpass that amount within a few hours for a much better cause that affects every human being.
Hi
I am a two time survivor, my first ancer saved my life from the second. I survived pancreatic cancer.
I was going for my checkups from the first, they found the tumor and I was lucky it was found in time.
Cancer is a tough disease, tougher is after. Try and get life insurance!!

I try and raise as much awareness and money for cancer reasearch. I would like to start a college fund for Students who's parents has had cancer.
"The Cancer College Fund" I just do not how to start.
Stand Up To Cancer is a powerful and inspiring idea.  But why was there a segue to the Iraq War?  The segment on finding a cure for cancer deserved the hosts and guests complete attention.
This disease has touched everyone in one shape or form. What a wonderful way to join together. This disease has killed several of my family members and my aunt is fighting for her life in the hospital today as I write this. This is something we all need to help fight against. Its taken too many loved ones from me.
Cancer- Iraq both are highly important to our society / lives Today.  I am so excited for this promotion to fight cancer.  We need to take care of our home (US) to help fight the bigger battles.  Cancer has affected so many- including my family.  Lets find the cure before it continues to take more precious lives-
My husband is so important to my family.  He holds us together and we are scared because he has stage 4 brain cancer.  We would love a cure to be found for this disease. It would help families both emotionally and financially. In our case,  it costs so much - $600 AFTER Blue Cross/BlueShield insurance every month just for the treatment to raise his white blood count and that doesn't count all the other drugs and surgeries!! We are lucky that we have been able to afford this so far - I can't imagine what it would be like not to do so.  Thank you so much for putting this program together!!!  If we can spend billions a week for a war wouldn't it be nice to spend some for a cure???
My mother is presently on hospice.  She was diagnosed with Lung Cancer which had mestasized to her Liver back in October.  She tried chemotherapy which proved to be successful in the Lungs however the liver just never responded.  As I have watched my Mom go through this process I have wondered what signs we missed that might could have saved her life.  I applaude the three networks to join together and bring more awareness to this deadly disease that affects people each day.
Our family lost our sister due to Cancer 7 years ago.  It was hard  on our mother as she was still alive.  She said no child  should go before the parents.  My sister would visit Mom everyday or at least a phone call daily.  She was such a grand person  thinking  nothing of herself but always of others.  This is such a wonderful pprogram that you are  doing.  Thank you for the program.
Hello and my thanks go out to all the network TV anchors for their time and interest and energy. I am not writing to get my note posted. (In fact, please don't.) But I DO HOPE someone will read this note and that someone who can do something with it will respond to me. I know it's asking a lot but a lot is at stake.

I am currently battling stage IV kidney cancer. By rights I shouldn't still be alive but due to some great doctors and recently approved meds I have been staying one step ahead of death. Prognosis is bad but I use whatever energy I have to do some good whenever I can. Please help me be a catalyst for good today.

I have come to know two cancer researchers who the world desperately needs and deserves to hear from. Their names are Dr. Ercole Cavalieri and Dr. Eleanor Rogan and they work at the Eppley Cancer Research Center connected to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

(Google “cavalieri rogan cancer detection prevention” and click on either of the first two hits. The first 2 PAGES of hits in fact are dominated by their most recent discovery.)

For over 30 Drs. Cavalieri and Rogan have been researching cancer at the chemical/molecular level rather than the physiological. As such they have discovered that cancer is a naturally occurring event in all of us – and that it is part of the way nature is designed!! Estrogen is the key. We need estrogen for procreation but estrogen is inherently dangerous because it is very susceptible to an extremely dangerous kind of DNA damage. Evolution has provided us, however, with natural mechanisms of “cleansing” this carcinogenic material and flushing it out with our waste.

Cancer risk is detectable (with a urine test!) and cancer prevention is achievable – easily.

I’d bet my medical insurance you have never heard about any of this.

Why haven’t you heard about it? GOOD QUESTION! Your new TV show could change that – and change the world. I hope it will.

These good and dedicated people’s discovery came too late for me and the 1500+ people who will die today and EVERY DAY from this cursed disease. But it’s not too late to make sure future generations are safe. DO SOMETHING GREAT! Talk to these folks and listen to what they have to say.

As I said before, even though you must get deluged with notes on a blog I DO HOPE someone will read this note and respond. PLEASE. CALL THEM! Call it my single dying wish.
I cringe when i hear the word cancer. You would think somehow some way there would be a cure by now. My aunt and second mother passed away 2 years ago when cancer spread throughout her body. It was a horrible loss that still hurts me today to think of. I commend any effort to help find a cure. God Bless.
I applaud the Stand Up 2 Cancer initiative!  NBC and ABC have chosen intelligent and professional commentators for the Sept. 5 broadcast.
My husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2006.  Thank God we made it to Johns Hopkins, where its amazingly talented and dedicated people operated, got him on a clinical trial, and tried a modality that had not been tried before.  Two years later he's incredibly healthy.  While we know it may not last forever, Johns Hopkins' talent is second to none in coming up with new treatments and ideas for keeping this beast at bay.  We applaud and honor all of the incredible health care providers who devote their lives to defeating this awful disease.  And we love the idea of the star.  Our entire family is doing it.
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to see Katie, Brian, and Charles standing up and doing something important for cancer. My father passed away from lung cancer in 1974, and I never thought that 34 years would pass and still have no cure for lung cancer. I applaud them for this wonderful venture. Lets hope we can finally find a cure for ALL CANCERS.
HI I wanted to say thank you for doing this! I've lost 2 grandparents to cancer! It is such a devestatign disease. BUT, I'm here not to talk about my grandparents, but a little boy who just recently (3 wks ago) Lost a 4 yr battle with ALL. Here is his Website. http://www.samuelbackus.com/Samuel.html. He was diagnosed when he was just 2 yrs old, and started treatment, only to have the treatment kill his colon, and have other devestating side effects from the drugs given to him. He still stayed and fought for 4 years, and his parents were there every single step of the way to help him, to ease his suffering, to bring him to the doctors, the hospitals, and reasearch themselves to find alternative treatments to help along with the chemo. This little boy died from both a dead gut and cancer, had the chemo he was given at the start of the disease not killed his colon, who knows, he may be still here fighting today. But he is not, he is free from pain, from torment, from this devestating disease. His parents are now morning his lose, missing him, but not missing his suffering and pain.

I would ask on behalf of this family i've never met that the anchors doing this stand up to cancer will think of this family as well. Maybe even include them in your broadcasts.

Thank you for this chance to help cancer research.  I was diagnosed wo\ith small-cell lung cancer 14 months ago.  I all the chemo required and then six weeks of radiation directly on the lung.  The cancer went into remission but small cell is historically known to move onto the brain.  In November I had four weeks of straight cranial radiation, every day, as a preventive to the cancer reaching the brain.  This is supposed to have an 80% sucess rate.  I was in the 20% unsuccessful.  I now have a grape-sized tumor deep in the left side of my brain.  BUT . . . . because of new research there is a type of surgery out there that does not involve drilling into the skull to remove the tumor.  It's done with radiation, something like cyper-knife.  Tomorrow, May 30th, I will have this new surgery at St. Peter's in Albany.  Since this is a new form of surgery I only pray I have better luck than the cranial radiation.

If anyone want's to know more about this surgery St. Peter's Cancer Center and Doctor Savage (radiation oncologist) do have web sites.  They have only had their maching since November, that's how new this is.  Wish me luck, folks!

Also, if anyone from the research group reads this and would like to ask me questions about this new procedure feel free.

Thank you
There seems to be more and more awareness of cancer and I wish that in this lifetime that a cure will be found.  My mother died of Bile Duct Cancer (in the liver) on May 14, 2007; my father HAD prostat cancer but beat it and doing great - Thank you God!  My aunt (mom's sister) died of breast cancer a few years back; my uncles (dad's brothers) died of cancer; another uncle (mom's brother) died of cancer; my grandmother (my dad's mom) died of stomach cancer.  As you can see, we have this dreadful gene and I am one of 7 daughters and we all take good care of ourselves and pray that it will not be something we will have to deal with.  I pray for a cure and I pray for all those who have passed on from this terrible disease and those having to deal with their losses.
If only the oil companies would decided to donate part of the billions of dollars that they have profited from oil in the last few years, we could possible find that cure for cancer.  Just think, it could be the dollars they donate, that finds the cure, that could possible save someone they love.
I have breast cancer.  So far I'm doing well.  I hope and pray for a long and healthy life with my family.  My greatest wish, is that we support those, who work day and night trying to find the cure, in hopes that my child or anyone else will never have to live this horror, life robbing demon.  How can we spend so much money on a Bush war, when we have the truest of killers here, taking the lives of our children, women and men?  Why aren't we putting our money there? Imagine a cure.  The truest of battles would then be won for all through out the world.
