Hoda to grads: Your job is waiting for you

Posted: Monday, May 12, 2008 4:33 PM by Jen Brown

Over the weekend, Hoda had the honor of delivering the commencement address at her alma mater, Virginia Tech.  Here's the text of her speech:

Hello, graduates!

I asked my friends one question before I came here, and that question was, "Who spoke at your college graduation?"  Do you know not one person could remember?  No one could remember who stood at a podium like this one and spoke at graduation.  They couldn’t remember the speaker, but they all remember the message.  It was always the same.  It was always poignant, always memorable and it went like this...

"Wa wa ..wa wa...wa wa” (a-la Charlie Brown’s teacher)

Class of 2008, I am going to remember you and I want you to remember me.

I am Hoda Kotb -- and I am a HOKIE!

I am a TODAY Show co-host --  and I am a HOKIE!

I am a breast cancer survivor --  AND I AM A HOKIE!

I am addicted to my iPod -- and I am A HOKIE

People ask me all of the time, "How are the kids from Virginia Tech doing?"  And then they give me "the look."  You know the look -- the one that says, “Awwww,” the look of pity.  I always answer the same way, “Have you ever MET anyone from Virginia Tech????  We are not-curl-up-under-the-covers, suck-our- thumbs kind of people.  We are people who RISE UP.”

There is a saying: "If you fall, fall on your back. Because if you fall on your back you can see up.  And if you can see up you can get up.  And you can keep going and going and going.”

People say a lot of things.

They said it would be tough to recover after such a tragedy.  It would be tough to heal, tough to rise up.

But you did.

They said new students would not come to Virginia Tech.  They would be too afraid.  They would not set foot on this campus.

But they did.

They said it would be tough to separate the tragedy from the tradition, that you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the Virginia Tech experience like Top of the Stairs, the ACC championship game, the girls softball team beating the U.S. Olympic team …

But you did, and it felt good.

Ok, so now it is time to look forward, time to look ahead.
How many of you have jobs?

(kids screaming0

Ok, I see where the engineers are sitting.  Some of the rest of you may be travelling.  Who is going back home to live with mom and dad????

(roar)

Parents, you must be so proud.

OK, this part of the speech is for those of you WITHOUT a job.  DO NOT PANIC.  Your job is out there waiting for you.  You just have to go get it.

Here's how I got my first one.

I graduated from Tech, had my college degree in one han, my resume tape in the other, and ONE job interview set up.  I had on a brand new green suit, borrowed my mom's car.   I told her, “Mom,  I am going to drive from our house in Alexandria, Va. to this T.V. station in Richmond.  I am going to get hired, then I am going to bring the car back, pack and move to Richmond.

She said, “Of course you will.”

So I drove to Richmond, met the news director, looked around the newsroom and thought, “Hmmmmm.  I  will sit THERE, and I will date HIM.”  Seemed promising.  The news director put my tape in the machine, played it for about 30 seconds. popped it out and said,  “Hoda, I am sorry but you are not ready for Richmond.” Hmmmmmm.  I asked him if there was any tips he could give me, advice. He said, “No, you are just not very good right now.  Good luck and buh-bye.”

As I was leaving, he said, “Hoda, wait a minute.  I have a friend, a news director in Roanoke.  He is hiring,  but he is leaving tonight.  If you catch him I am sure he will hire you.”

I said tell him I am coming

So I called my mom about the car and said, “Mom, I did not want Richmond. I want ROANOKE."  So I started driving south, got to the newsroom, looked around and thought, “This is ok. I will sit THERE.  And I will date HIM.”

The news director put my tape in, played it for 30 seconds, popped it out and said, “I am sorry, but you are not ready for Roanoke.

I couldn’t believe it.

He said good luck to you and buh-bye.  As I was leaving, he said, "Hold on. I have a friend of mine who is hiring.  He is in Memphis, Tenn.”

Now Tennessee is the long, skinny state, and Memphis is at the other end.  And I said tell him I AM COMING.

I drove across the great state of Tennessee, met the news director. He put my tape in the machine and promptly said, "Hoda, I am sorry but you are not ready for Memphis.”

I almost died..  Oh yeah, and then he said "buh-bye."

As i was leaving he said, “Wait a minute.  I know someone who will hire you.”

Graduates, I was in the car for 10 days.  I got 27 rejections.  Twenty-seven news directors told me no.  I got rejected throughout the entire Southeast. Does anyone know where Dothan, Ala. is?  I got rejected there.  I made my way to the panhandle of Florida.  There was nowhere else to go.

I decided it was time to drive home.  I was sad, listening to James Taylor on the radio, and then I got lost.

I got lost in Mississippi.

You know how they say God gives you a sign?  Well, he gave me a sign alright.  It was a real sign.   It said, "Greenville, our eye is on your CBS," or something like that.

I went to the TV station, and that man HIRED ME.

So I am telling you your job is out there waiting for you, you just have to go and get it.

I told you I am a breast cancer survivor. If you survive a tragedy, you get some unexpected gifts.  You get some gifts, you have to look for them.  Breast cancer taught me two things.  Number one: my life has margins and is to be valued and not wasted.  So I say not one more minute.  I will not waste one more minute. So I held onto the things I love, and got rid of the things I didn’t.

Number two: If you survive a tragedy you get four words.  You get  YOU CAN’T SCARE ME.  Nothing will be worse than what you faced.  So let’s say the tax man is on the phone.  Ok,  let’s say your boyfriend breaks up with you via text message.  Ok, you can handle it.

Ok, I have a little surprise for you.  I told you I am addicted to my iPod, and I have it right here...a little song i think you will enjoy..

(I put the earbuds on the mic, and blast “Enter Sandman” by Metallica.  The kids went completely nuts)

I want to close by saying they said it would be tough to recover after such a tragedy, tough to rise up.  But you did.

They say it will be tough to change the world.

But you will...

You go girl!!!  My respect and admiration was always there for you, but now it is stronger than ever!!!
Those students WILL remember you and your message!
I attended the VT commencement ceremoy. Hoda's speech was amazing! It was directed at the studens, was upbeat and inspiring. I heard nothing but talk o the speech the rest of the weekend. Thank you for such a great gift to these students who have been through so much!
I went to the Tech graduation - as awesome as it is to see your son graduate, having Hoda make that inspiring, kid centered speech was a perfect way to spend the night.  Thanks for making it ABOUT the kids!
I also attended the VT graduation to watch my daughter.  The atmosphere was electric and the ceremony was uplifting.  Hoda's address was inspiring, funny, touching and will be remembered forever by these students and their families.  Thanks Hoda for making the weekend even more perfect.  GO HOKIES!!!!!
Hoda,

This past month I have been enjoying seeing you with Kathy Lee and now to come to the Today website and see "Hoda's Talk to Grads":  then you are speaking at the VA Tech's Graduation!  That made me stop and read your wonderful and inspiring talk. I know the grads will remember your talk and I also know you will continue to succeed!  Applaudes to Hoda!!
Hoda I just listen to  your  speach and it was awesome
keep up the great  work. Specially  working with  Katie  lee
That sounds like an awesome speech. I do know who spoke at mine; Maya Angelou. I didn't appreciate her at the time and skipped going. My mother, even though her daughter was absent, went just to hear Maya.
We also attended the VT graduation to see my husbands brother graduate and this was the best speech we have ever heard at any graduation we have been too.  You can tell Hoda is a TRUE HOKIE!!!  Keep up the good work Hoda
Hoda, you are blessed and you are a blessing....I'm sending this link to my young adult son who about to try to take the next step in his career which is a graduation of sorts.  Continued success and prosperity to you!
Hoda:
Thank you for delivering such a great speech.  My entire family was impressed and so was my son and that is not easy to do :).  Last year was very trying for all of us and feel blessed that we were all able to celebrate this year with my son, alive and well.  Thanks again for making this a memorable graduation.  Kim Kinney  Vermont   Go Hokies !!!!!
hoda's speech is very down-to-earth. anybody would remember it, not only thegraduates. I like it. congrats.
THAT was incredible!!!  You are a true role model for a lot of people, not just the Hokies of VT.
Hoda,
Our son graduated from VT this past weekend.  Hallelujah!  We lost our oldest daughter/his sister during his junior year and it really affected him.  He hung in there and perservered just like you had said in your speech.  We felt your commencement address was just for him, all the while knowing you were speaking to all of the students and their families.  You touched our hearts as well as his.  Be Blessed,
Hoda, I am a VT 2008 graduate and I will not forget your speech.  You are such an amazing person and I feel so priviledged to have had you give my commencement address.  You are such a strong woman and a great role model.  I love you, Hota!  Keep doing what you do, I'll be watching forever.  Thank you!  GO HOKIES!
Hoda,

Your speech at the VT commencement was great.  I have heard a few keynote speakers at graduation ceremonies and have rarely heard anyone address the graduation students in such a relevant and engaging way.  Our son graduated and we had 19 family members and a family friend join us at the graduation.  Everyone was impressed with your speech. Thank you for making it about the graduates and their accomplishments.
Blessings to you and continued health.
Go Hokies!
I heartily endorse all of the above.  I was privileged to be among that grand group of VT graduates, their families, friends, and outstanding commencement address by Hoda.
Absolutely fabulous! I have spent the last two days telling everyone about Hoda's commencement speech. I fell in love with her when she spoke about Tech last year after the tragedy and she just confirmed my feelings on Friday.  Thank you Hoda - you made us laugh and cry. As always, I am proud to be a Hokie!
Wow, What a gracious women!!!!!!
Hoda-
nice video/speech.

However, it is clear that the 4th hour of TODAY is the BEST it's ever been,so that's why the host chat with you and kathy needs to be longer, because after that I stop watching it. I loved seeing Rosie on it...she would be a great 3rd co-host!!!!
I truly do not remember who spoke at my graduation but I will remember who spoke at Tech in 2008. What a combination of inspiration, connection and thoughfulness. The Hokie Nation has forever changed the world with their strength and unity. Now they will touch us with their knowledge and committment.
I don't remember who spoke at my graduation from Mississippi State, but reading your speech today inspired me more than any of the graduation speeches I've heard.  I'm a second from 40 yrs old, but you've shown me what I need to improve my life and be as successful as I want to be!  Way to go girl!!
Hoda.......I am glad that I have this opportunity to express my deepest appreciation and thanks to you for an OUTSTANDING Commencement Address at Virginia Tech this past weekend.  My son was one of the graduating recipients and I can't imagine a more memorable send-off than the one you gave.  We have 3 HOKIES in our family.  I am a VT 1974 graduate, my daughter is a 2004 graduate and now my son....a 2008 graduate. We are proud to be HOKIES and fortunate to have people like you as fellow HOKIES.  Best wishes, Hoda.  May you continue to touch many people with your heartfelt messages.  HOKIE PROUD!!!!
Wow!! Hoda! You were awesome at the VA Tech Graduation!  I am a proud parent and when you asked us if we remembered our commencement speaker, I can honestly say I didn't remember mine from Fairmont State College back in 1983.  But I did remember my nephew's commencement speaker at SMU in Dallas who was Bill Cosby!  And you were as inspiring as he was and I don't believe that anyone will ever forget you and your outstanding address.  It was so uplifting for the Hokie nation!  Thank you!
I'm a class of 2008 Hokie graduate! And when I sat there and listened to Hoda talk, I felt as if she was talking to me directly. Her speech was SO inspiring and empowering, and it gave me hope for the future. I am still searching for what I want to do, but she really gave me the will and determination to want to follow my dream. My family loved your speech, my fellow graduates loved your speech, and I not only loved but NEEDED your speech. Thank you so much!
Hoda, you are a Hokie!!!
God Bless you,
Susan '85 and James '86

HOda, you are a very classy lady and a great selection to deliver the commencement speech to send the graduate into the world. My husband and I have always enjoyed seeing on the Today Show. I am not sure why you needed a sidekick. I am offering this quote by George Washington "Be courteous to all but intimate with few and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence." Thank you for not turning everything into a joke and for not poking fun at others, which I have never seen you do, please don't start now. Va. Tech is lucky to have you as an alumni.
My daughter is a 2003 graduate of Va. Tech and is now an Intern Architect(taking her tests now for her license) and is still a very involved Hokie!! What a great speech she forwarded to me. You are an inspiration to the up and coming grads and really moved me with your speech. Keep up the good work!
Hodie!  I wasn't at the graduation, but I read this speech when it was sent via email to our entire sorority listserv.  We love you, Hodie and I knew from the first time I met you in college that you were destined for greatness.  I love your story of perseverence after graduation.  Delta love, Faith
Thank you Hoda,  thank you.
Hoda,
You and your speech were amazing! I was at the ceremony to watch my sister graduate, and I will be graduating in 2010 from Tech as well! I wish I could have you as my commencement speaker, you're welcome to come back! I will always remember your speech, thanks you! Go Hokies!
I know a number of Hokie grads and they are resiliant, brilliant and terrific just like you, Hoda.  I loved your "first" job story, woman!  Fantastic.  You're the Best!
Marlene Pamer; Arlington, Va
Hello. I switched from the view to your show.  I have always been impressed w/ the sophisticated air surrounding Hoda.  On todays show (Thur 5/15) I was completely off guard to see her tan lines.  How tacky for a talk show host to have their tan lines show.  What happened?  Didn't the make up/wardrobe person catch this, and why didn't they use a bronzer to fill it in?  I am sad to say, the unprofessional look has turned me off on the show.
Hoda,
Thanks for making my son's graduation from VT such a memorable event.  As an academic I have endured more commencement addresses than I care to remember.  Yours will stick with the grads and all those present last Friday evening.  You really got everyone jumpin'.  Thanks.  Ron May
This was so inspiring !! I am proud of Hoda and my heart has been touched.  Way to go Hokies !
Hoda,
Your message was so wonderful and uplifting for these graduates and their families. Thank you for your bright, courageous outlook on life. I enjoy watching you and Kathie Lee on your show and I greatly admire you both!
Hoda, I applaud you for showing American women that cancer CAN be beat! I test every yr, and am happy to say I am ok this yr. I want to know how a 56 yr old single woman can find an eligible man as a life partner? I have tried dating services, social events, bingo, trips, and just cannot "click" with someone who likes dancing to latin music, speaks spanish, would like to go to Costa Rica, possibly live in the US AND Costa Rica, and wants a spunky, clean, colorful and creative jewelry maker who is loyal and loves intelligent conversation! Go to www.myspace.com/Ramafan1 I make SaratogaSpirals, the newest fashion rage. I've sold over 250 of my one of a kind creations, and name each piece of art! Yet...as creative as I am, I can't seem to create a relationship! eHarmony told me twice there is NO MATCH for a woman like me! Help! I am 5'4", 127 lbs, constantly evolving, think the most of myself, and lovely. During racing season, I buy the clubhouse season pass, thin king mayb e I'll meet some lovely gentleman to go to dinner with...nothing!
What is wrong with me??
Hoda,
You have always been fearless. Now you just know it. I predicted 19 years ago that you would be where you are today. God be with you as you travel into the future.
I don't remember who spoke at my graduation! It was just some guy nobody knew. Your speech has made a difference in MY life. Thank You.
