Matt and Meredith's Super Bowl bet

Superbowl 2008There's more riding on Sunday's game than the Lombardi trophy. 

On Thursday's show, Matt (a Giants' fan) and Meredith (a Patriots' fan) agreed that if New England wins the Super Bowl, Matt will publically admit defeat by having a plane fly over Boston with a banner proclaiming: "Patriots Rule, Matt Drools."

Should the Giants upset the team with the longest winning streak in NFL history, those in the New York area will be treated to a plane flying a banner with Meredith's face on it and the message: "Giants Rule, Meredith Drools."

That's cute and all but I thought Today was trying to Go Green.  Couldn't you take a full page ad out in the paper of each city - the papers are already accounted for so no extra waste of resources in that.  The plane fuel not green.

That's hilarious! Sounds like a brother/sister bet. It would be nice, though, if it was more enviromentally friendly. Maybe with the looser wearing a sandwich board on the corner of the busiest street and shouting the saying with a megaphone. Just a thought.

Good Morning Matt & Meredith,
         Thank you both for letting me voice my opinion on your Super Bowl bet. I think that it's a cute contest, but a big waste of money. I think the viewing public would get just as big a thrill, from hearing that the "loser" donated money to a school system. This could be used for books or teaching supplies or even sports equipment. The money could also be donated to another well known place: St. Jude's Children's Hospital. I'm sure that the children there would enjoy simple things, crayons, coloring books, or even Teddy Bears. I look forward to seeing Matt's plane flying over Massachusetts.  Please make sure it flies down around Cape Cod and the Islands so I can see it.  Also, it should fly around Providence/Rumford, Rhode Island so Meredith's family can see it.  New England will win!  GO PATS!!!!!

Since the emphasis on some of your shows has been about going green, how about something else besides the gas a plane would waste flying the banner.  How about one of the huge neon signs on the square.

I don't know I love Meredith, but I am going to have to go with Matt on this one. I am from Indiana so I was pulling for the Colts, so since our "Manning" isn't going to the SuperBowl this year I have to go with Eli and the Giants!! I am sticking with the Manning family!!

Instead of spending the money it would take to fly a plane with a banner, why doesn't the loser donate the amount that stunt would cost to a worthwhile US charity?  Seems like a better use for the money and then instead, the loser could wear a hat, or shirt, or whatever with the winning team logo on the show live on Monday.

I would think money could be better spent than

Although I am not a fan of either teams I will be rooting for the Giants.. However I do believe they have a tough game ahead of them.. I would love to see the patriots choke.. Due to the fact that he cheated in in the beginning.. I don't feel they should be representing an American sport when Coach Bill cheated in the beginning.. I am not disputing the other games after but if you cheat what kind of message does that send out.. Any other sports and I think it would of been a different outcome .. But enough of that.. I just hope it is a good game and not a disappointment.. Good luck to both teams and to all the players.. Go Giants!!!!

What a nice way to be passionate with your team. I think the patriots will win because they have the confidence to go with their talent. However, an upset is not unlikely because the Giants have played so well in the playoffs and have the momentum (if it has not been cooled during this two weeks!) Besides they have the motivation to embarrass the Patriots with their attempt to set another record.

The terms of the bet are not embarrassing enough. A better bet would be: If Matt loses, he has to do the Today show dressed as Meredith and if Meredith loses she has to do the Today show dressed like Matt(including hairstyle).

I understand that this is all being done in fun, and that this bet is not the only thing that Meredith and Matt will spend their money or time with. However, I think that they should look at a better use of their time and money. What would be wrong with donning the opposing teams jersey and doing volunteer work in that community?

I understand the fun of friendly betting but couldn't the money the payoff of this bet cost be better used for charitable purposes?  I know the cost of making the banner and flying it over a metropolitan area is not cheap.

Instead of wasting the money to fly a banner across the skies, why do they not just donate the money to the others charity.  With the cost of fuel and trying to stay "green", this seems like a waste.

How cute.  What will it cost to drag a banner around Boston or New York?  Wouldn't it be better to spend the money on bringing some under unpriviledged kids to the Big Game?  I think, who pays for this, should be the bet.

In a world with drained resources and a constant focus on living "GREEN", I am quite disappointed in their choice of a bet. Unless the plane is filled with food and medical supplies and will continue it's flight path to Haiti it seems to be a foolish waste.  Why not just have them wear a hemp made t-shirt with the slogan instead.
