The 'Miracle' Vet

Posted: Friday, January 25, 2008 9:23 AM by Dan Fleschner

TODAY's Jill Rappaport, an animal lover, shares her personal account of an inspiring doctor and her own struggle to help her ailing dog, Jack: WATCH VIDEO

Doctor Jiu Jia Wen is an incredible vet. But to his very special four-legged patients, who come from all over the country to his Long Island practice, he is much more than just their doctor. He is a "miracle worker."

You see, to them, he was their last hope for survival, and in less severe cases a hope for a better quality of life. Dr. Jiu Jia Wen specializes in alternative medicine. Herbs and acupuncture. And while he also practices conventional medicine as well, his true miracles have occurred through holistic therapy.

I came to Dr. Wen when my own dog, Jack, was diagnosed with bone cancer a year-and-a-half ago. As you can imagine I was overcome with grief and fear for my beloved pet.

What I really loved about this man was his optimism and the positive attitude he instills in his patients and their owners, to NEVER give up no matter how grim the diagnosis.

I started Jack on herbs that day. He unfortunately was very resistant to the amount required since he was never a great "pill taker" anyway. Well it was really difficult for me to try to disguise the herbs in every form of delicious food I could come up with, and Jack was becoming more resistant and distrusting of me every time I would try to feed him.

Needless to say this was not working for Jack. Then to my shock, I noticed Jack's tumor in his leg was growing and my heart stopped. It went from horrible to a true nightmare, when Jack ended up suffering a pathological fracture due to the tumor eating away at the bone.

At that point I was given no choice but to amputate my beautiful dog's leg to save his life. But conventional medicine for Jack was a true blessing. Eighteen months later, after his amputation and chemotherapy, Jack's cancer is in remission and he's living a beautiful happy and healthy life.

And as you may know, he is now the "ambassadog" of hope for specialized medicine. He is a true miracle. But trust me when I tell you that I feel it is so important that pet owners know ALL their options, whether it be conventional or holistic medicine.

Whatever works for your "fur angel" IS the right answer. And special people like Dr. Wen prove everyday, that miracles CAN happen despite the odds.

I would love to find out how to contact Dr. Jui Jui Wen.  Our beloved young lab, Tiki, has been diagnosed with sublingual squamous cell carcinoma and we have been told she has about a month to live.  I started her on holistic therapy as soon as she was diagnosed, and she is an otehrwise healthy, energetic dog, except for the tumor in her throat which will eventually strangle her.  The supplements I have been giving her have greatly improved her health, and I would like to learn more about more ways to possibly prolong her happy life.  I am a strong believer in holistic therapy; I can see the results right here laying beside me!
It is difficult to find a vet that practices Chinese Medicine.  I am currently studying acupuncture (for humans)and we see the remarkable changes in people's health with the power of such simple procedures as shown in this piece.  It is too bad that so many states have harsh laws that are biased toward Western Medicine in both humans and our pets.
Our dog, Chaggieboy, was dx'd with Cushing's Disease. He became ill on Saturday and I made an appt on Monday with our Vet.  Chaggieboy's sugar was over 300, he couldn't eat or keep anything down, he drank continually and urinated a lot.  I noticed he was drinking a lot beforehand and going out but I watched him and he would get better and then go back to the same problem.  I didn't realize he was so sick until I sat up with him all night.  I wish I had know about your system.  We loved him so much.  He was in to the Vets a month before he became ill and seemed all right.  Our Vets are wonderful caring people and they did their upmost to care for our Chaggieboy.  I am glad there is someone like you but I wish you were more well know.   Sincerely Chaggieboy's family.
Thank you sincerely for airing this program about this amazing vet! May I ask for a phone number for his practice? Does he have a website? More people should know about him because we all love our pets and have lost too many to cancer! Please advise?  Thank you!
How can we get in contact with Dr. Wen?
My dog Kelsey is going into kidney failure.I wonder if Doctor Wen could suggest a treatment that he could send me.
My dog, Lola, was diagnosed with nasal cancer in November.  We did the one-time-only radiation therapy and were still only given 9-12 months for survival.  However, just after New Year's her nose began to bleed again and we found out that the radiation did not work at all.  In fact, the tumor has now crossed over to her other nostril and up into her ocular cavity.  (You can actually see the lump on her head.)  I started Lola on Grapeseed Extract, a raw and juice diet after her initial diagnosis...all to no avail.  She is now on Protocel.  But still the cancer grows.  I would do anything for my little girl since she is my first child.  How do we contact this "miracle doctor" and find out what to do next?
How do I contact Dr. Wen?  I have a wonderful cat "Woodrow" who I rescued after he had been beaten up in a cat fight.  After 7 days in the hospital he became the newest addition to our family.  A couple of months later, he began throwing up every time he ate.  Our vet performed blood tests and took an x-ray.  He said Woodrow had a tumor that was pushing his intestines to the right side of his body.  He performed surgery and removed the tumor (1 pound of fat).  We have restricted his food but he is hungry all the time.  We had to put child restraints on the cabinet doors where we store the food.  I had a thyroid test done recently but the vet said there was nothing wrong with him.  He continues to gain weight and I'm stumped.  I don't know where to go from here.  Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thank you!
I would be very greatfull for information on how to contact Dr. Wen, my dog Flash has had surgery for an insulinoma but has a very high chance of developing this dread tumor again, as several small " Brown-spots were found on his liver. We also have to give him insulin injections as a result of his surgery. This would be his last chance, if he could either be cured or at least go into remission, I would be most gratefull.
Thank you, Flash's Dad.
i would like phone number for Dr. Wen and his address so we can contact him about our dog Murphy.

My ten year old Chow mix was diagnosed with Cushing’s in late November and with diabetes in December.  His sugar was over 800 and even with Insulin therapy we were only able to bring it down to 300-400.  He became blind two weeks ago and this past week he became very disoriented, agitated, and walked in circles.  It was extremely hard to watch his quality of life deteriorate so much.  Our beloved dog passed away yesterday.  Our Vets provided Porter with the best of care and I would thank each of them.  I just wish that I had considered a holistic approach in his care.  I am glad to see that there is such hope and success in Doctor Wen’s methods.
I would like to try Dr. wen's herb's. I wonder if there's a phone # and how much a consult is. I'm on disability , so money is beyond tight. But my dog had a mast cell tumor removed a few months agao. I don't want it to come back!
i talked to a vet that deals w/Dr. Wen, but the herbs were over $200 a month! i can't afford that.
i wonder if Dr. wen himself would have a cheaper product i could use.
By the way i paid $50 to get a copy of what he should eat and the name's of these supplement's, but couldn't afford to speak w/the vet. Nor would they tell me what was in the herbal concoction. i was hoping to make my own, as I am familiar w/herbs, but not many of the chinese herbs.
if anyone out there has any info on MCT and Dr. Wen, please let me know. My pet's are therapy for me and my best friends, as I am homebound.
thanks so much!
Claudia
I wish I would have known about him when I lived in NYC a few years ago.  I had a Pug that had to have surgery 2 times for slipped discs.  He had a 3rd one in July that shut down his intestinal system and I had to put him down.

But I live in Minneapolis now, and my other pug see Dr Leilani Hoteling at the Minnetonka Animal Hospital who is similar to Dr. Wen.  She practices western and eastern medicine.  Accupunture treatments have kept my other pug from having to have surgery and have definitely improved her physical abilities.
Please tell me if there are any doctors in Manhattan practicing like this...does Dr. Wen have any association with The Animal Medical Center on East 62nd Street? Thank you.
Do you have a way to contact Dr. Jui Jui Wen?  I have a 2 year old lab mix that has a fungal problem.  He has been to the vet twice and after taking the antibiotics and anitfungal medicine he gets better but it only lasts for a few weeks.  The antifungal medicine is quite expensive and I don't mind the cost but it is like throwing good money after bad.  If it worked as a permanant solution, great but it doesn't.  After some internet research, this is a common problem in some dogs and it is referred to as "leaky belly syndrome".  I changed his food to a holistic food but I don't think that is enough.  He is not in any danger with this problem but it does make him uncomfortable and he continues to loose hair in the places where this fungus "leaks" from his body. Anyway, I would like to contact Dr. Wen about my problem and get his advice.
would like contact info on Dr. Wen, have a 15 year old dog with severy authritis and would like to know what herbs he should be on i have a herbalist here, but would be happy to purchase them from Dr. Wen. He is alread undergoing accupuncture on a monthly basis.
The story of Dr Wen began with a Mastiff with Wobblers that was successfully treated with herbs and acupuncture.  Another site:  www,syllysylvia.com also deals with the successful alternative treatment of wobblers through acupuncture, and gold bead implants.
I would like to know how I may contact Dr. When for I too have an Angel in my care. She's protective, loveable, and loyal, however, she has a nasty habit I feel can't be healthy for her.  Our Vet claims there is nothing we can do. So I was wondering if any Chinese Herbs would stop her bad habit of eating her feces. Please help her!
My two mini dachshunds have been patients of Dr. Wen's ever since one (Emmett) had his second surgery for a slipped disk. Once recovered and walking, Emmett began weekly acupuncture and herbs, and now goes for acupuncture every 3 months (but takes the herbs twice daily). I wouldn't let ANYONE else touch my dogs other than Dr. Wen, I think so highly of him. The Hampton Veterinary Clinic is located at 176 Montauk Highway in Speonk, and can be reached at 631-325-1611.
As was M. Wolforth Massillon's pet, our pride and joy, "Sparky" was diagnosed with Cushings last August.  The vet has changed his insullin dosage numerous times and has another appt 2/4.  Being on a fixed income, over $2000 since 8/1 has been a bit much, but anything for our boy.  I'd also like to know how to contact Dr. Wen for any possible recommendations he may have.  Good luck 2 all of u in the quest to ease the comfort of your pets.  They ARE a part of the family.
I have 6 dog's, (all over 50lbs) 3 cat's and 1 rooster. Is there anyone in the Atlanta, Georgia (30134) area who Dr. Wen recommends for myself and my animals? Dr. Wen RULES! And, how may we contact Doc?
Debbie Fuller Gray, Hiram, Georgia
Jui Jui Wen, thank you, thank you, thank you! You are one amazing person.  I tried to find you to email you myself. Holistic meds are not considered in the US because the Pharmaceutical companies would lose millions.  Kevin Trudel's book is amazing on these kinds of cures.  I'd love to tell Dr. Jui Jui Wen that I think he is amazing and I'm so proud of what he is doing.  We need to get our government to take western medicines seriously, they do work!!! It's just the Pharmaceutical company's won't make any money on it...so our Dr's don't get the information that is saving people and pets all around the world.  I'm living proof - when nothig else helped, western meds cured me!  :-)  THANK YOU Dr. WEN!
Hello,I saw that you could help the dog that was paralized with herbs, and acupuncture.I would love to see If something similar could help my husband who has Pls a rare form of Als.He Is slowly becoming paralized as well. You would be a true hero If you could help my young husband!!I know our four children would be very grateful for any help.
How do I contact Dr. Wen? Where is his practice?
Jill and Dr. Wen thank you for doing this important segment on alternative medicine.

My own pets life was saved from a debilitating skin condition that could have lead to euthanasia had it not been for alternative medicine.  Unfortunately in her case western medicine was iatrogenic and her condition deteriorated.  Our dog was cured by alternative medicine despite claims that her condition was incurable.  Once cured, we took our dog back to the traditional vets to show them a life saving alternative existed.  The traditional vets retested our dog and agreed she was cured. We have records documenting her medical history.

As a society we are fortunate to have access to outstanding advanced veterinary care utilizing both traditional and alternative medicines to save the lives of our beloved companion animals.

Linda, NJ

Please let me know how to contact Dr. Jui Jui Wen.

Thank you in advance.
Please send us a way to get in touch with Dr. Jiu Jui Wen.  We have a beloved dog that we feel would benefit from his treatment.  Nika is a very special member of our family that has developed trouble with her spine.  THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS ARTICLE.  He sounds like a very caring vet.!!!!!!!

Becky Gillman  Sidney, Oh  45365
Thank you so much for airing this segment on Dr. Jui Jui Wen.  I don't even have pets at the present but I made it a point to look on your website to find the video and write down the doctor's information.
As for any family member; when illness comes you go anywhere to get a chance at treatment that may be successful.  When I decide to add a family member with four paws, I will already have a good doctor's information in my blackberry!!!

Thanks again,
Eva
i would like to what herb you used and the mix. because i have a dog similer problems. and please
excuse the spelling.
How do I contact Dr. Wen and where is his practice?
love jill! would love to see her on nbc more often. it is refreshing to see that someone cares so much for animals as i do. thank god for dr.wen. i have a dog who is not going to survive her nasal cancer and i have never felt such heartbreak or cried so much in my life due to the fact that i can not afford her treatment i feel that i have failed  her.  i recently lost my home, job and now i will lose my best friend i dont know how much more i can take. i am so glad to here of so many success stories for people and their animals.
How do I contact Dr. Wen? Does he have recommendations for other parts of the country?
We have a 10 year old yellow lab that has been diagnosed with Cushings, I would love to use herbs rather than drugs to try to help her get this under control.  The thought of a drug to kill off part of a gland just doesn't sound like a good thing.
Please tell me how to contact Dr. Wen. Thanks. Debbie Jamsa, Prescott, Arizona
I would love contact info for Dr. Wen for a consult or refferal in the Northern NJ area.
hi, anyone in the philadelphia area practicing what Dr. Wen does?
I too need a number or website for Dr. Jui Jui Wen.  I had a tumor taken off my dog on Jan 3rd and when the biopsy came back they said she had an aggressive cancer that is in her bloodstream and limpnodes.  They only gave her a few months to live and I believe she had a lot more life in her than that.
I would like to get in touch with Dr.Wen to find out if he knows of docotors in other parts of the country that practice Western medicine on pets. I live in South Florida. This would be extremely helpful to me.
How do I contact Dr.Wen?I have a pekingnese with some back problems that I think Dr.Wen could help.
I have lost 2 dogs in the past year to cancer. My last dog has osteosarcoma. I have chosen not to pursue chemo or amputation because he has other arthritic issues and is not a good candidate. I had recieved some holistic advice and a medicine called Hoxsey. I also considered massage. I chose to use conventional medicine to control the pain due to the severity of his condition. Thank-you for airing the Dr.Wen segment. Too many people go to a conventional vet and give up. I hope that holistic/alternative therapy becomes a standard option for pets as it gaining popularity with humans. I would also like to see more documented studies of herbals for both humans and animals. We have the technology to do just about everything else under the sun, why are we not trying to improve our health using natural medicines. Thousands of years of use have to account for something. I feel synthetic medicines may also benefit from this research. I also hope in the near future conventional and alternative medicine learn to "work with each other". I believe it would benefit the doctor and the patient.
Our 7 year old cocker was diagnosed with diabetes 10 months ago.  Unfortunately, the diagnosis was not made until his condition was critical. With the help of two wonderful emergency facilities and a wonderful hometown vet, he is now doing well.  The turning point seemed to be the discovery of a wonderful holistic vet within our very own vet's office.  The addition of chinese herbs and attention to proper nutrition was definitely the turning point for our dog.  We are grateful for the exceptional care which has been given our four-legged family member and I encourage others who may be experiencing a difficult situation to consider this very valuable resource. This was literally a life saver for us.
We also would like contact info for Dr. Wen.
Does Dr. Wen have a website, or is there anyone in VA that practices Chinese Herbs for dogs? I would also like to know what mix he uses. I have a boxer that had a tumor removed.
I too would love to have Dr.Wen's contact information.  Thank you,
Melissa
The story said that he was in Long Island in West Hampton but I too would like contact information.  I have a GSD with hip displasya who is about to turn 8 but was diagnosed at 7 mos with this disease and has recently taken a turn for the worse.  Just this week I have started living in my living room as she can no longer make the stairs and I can't bear the idea of  forcing her to stay downstairs all night.
I have a beloved companion, Joshua, who was just diagnosed with tonsilar squamous cell carcinoma and given little time to live. PLEASE let me know how to contact Dr. Wen for an appointment. Thank you.
Hi-
We have been taking our dog, Rocky, to Dr. Wen for the last five years.  He is truly a miracle worker.
Rocky was diagnosed 5 years ago with a slipped disc that required a difficult surgey to heal, so it was not receomended. He had become lame in the front because of this condition. A friend of mine mentioned Dr. Wen.  We thought we would take the chance and use accupuncture for the pain.  Never had to do accupuncutre, but Dr Wen prescribed herbs for Rocky.  Within 2 days Rocky was running. We have been maintaining this for the last four years. Last year, Rocky was diagnosed with diabetes. 6 months later he  was diagnosed with MS (yes dogs can get MS).  MS in dogs is rapidly degenerative.  Usually within 3 months the dog is paralized.  Dr Wen put Rocky on herbs.  Within a day the difference was noticable.  Within 1 month the disease stopped it's progression and actually reversed itself.  Rocky will stay on these herbs forever, just like he will be on insulin forever, but Dr. Wen has given us additional time with our guy, and has given ROcky a much better quality of life.  I could never thank Dr Wen enough for what he has done for us.....
Can you please give out Dr Wens phone number or some way he can be contacted? Thanks
This was a great story and so timely for me.  My 10 year old yellow lab has arthritis and now hip displaysia.  He is already on Soloxine and now taking Previcox.  I have talked with my doctor and we are working on ways to cut down on the medicine and use better foods.  Would love to learn from a website for this doctor is there is one.
I'm confused with this article, correct me if I'm wrong, and I am by no way trying to criticize or attack anyone, I just want to make sure I read it correctly. The article is seemingly praising Dr. Wen, however his herbal remedies did not work for this woman's dog, she wound up having to amputate the leg and resorting to conventional medicine...then why is everyone asking for Dr. Wen's information, and why is this article even talking about him, if what he attempted, did not work? I apologize if I really did read it wrong but I read it twice now. ( I did notice that "christina" from south huntington has a success story and I'm really happy about that but I don't see how the main article did this doctor any justice.
Ferin, NY - Thank you for recognizing the inconsistencies in this commentary, as I was confused with the mixed message as well.  Wish my best for all the dogs, turtles, whales and ferrets out there, but let's be accurate when reporting on why a methodology is successful, and what part of that process leads to  harmony.  Muddy reporting is anathema to what it was meant to do, which, (if my education has any merit) is appraise the public of the facts without opinion.  Period.  On a lighter note, bless all the kids, pups,  guppies, herds, flocks, schools, prides, and species that walk the planet regardless of the medicine that works to save them!
In Appreciation,
