Al Roker on UFOs, Extra-Terrestrials

Posted: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 10:04 AM by Dan Fleschner
Filed Under:

Something happened in Stephenville, Texas, last week. Something...extra-terrestrial? Well, maybe. NBC News correspondent Don Teague looked into this story to find out whether people, as some of them claimed, saw a UFO. WATCH VIDEO

As he mentioned on the air, our own Al Roker is a firm believer that something is out there. He's never seen a UFO, as you'll read below, but he's sure there's something out there. Do you agree? Have you ever seen a UFO? Send us your comments below.

In the meantime, you can read my conversation with Al after the jump:

DF: So what's the basis for your belief that there is extra-terrestrial life out there?

Al: I just don't believe that we're the only ones. Why not? Why shouldn't there be? If we're out there looking for something, why shouldn't there be something out there looking for us? Not necessarily looking for us, per se, but looking for something like us. They're out there. I firmly believe that.

DF: I would bet that a majority of Americans would agree with that. Or at least want to believe that there's something out there.

Al: I'm not equating this with religion, but in a certain sense, it's a leap of faith. You can't see it, but you believe it.

DF: Have you ever seen a UFO?

Al: I have not.

DF: Would you like to?

Al: I would like to, yes. Perhaps from a little bit of a distance. You're never quite sure, what kind of a UFO it is. Is it the kind of UFO where, like in that movie coming out -- Cloverfield -- is it the type of UFO where things start exploding? If it's that kind of UFO, I don't want to see it.

Is it more like Ray Walston in "My Favorite Martian"? That I like.

DF: A nice alien.

Al: The idea that the alien is living over my garage. That kind of guy.

DF: A "Mork and Mindy" type.

Al: A "nanu nanu" kind of guy or woman. Or a "Third Rock from the Sun" thing. A befuddled guy and a hot babe.

DF: Can you foresee a situation, like in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where you would be interested in joining this race of aliens?

Al: Yes, but I would like an end date.

DF: You'd just want to visit.

Al: Yeah, you know, if I go, who will make the house payments? I won't know what will have happened with "Lost" or on "Heroes." If they can tell me that I'll be back in "x" amount of time, then I'd prefer that.

DF: We always assume that these other beings will be more technologically advanced than us--

Al: Well, if they show up in a '73 Duster or worse, a '76 AMC Pacer, then you don't really want to go with these guys. Even though they did get here, if they're in a Pacer, you don't want to go.

I believe Al is correct. I have no formal training in astrophysics but I do take it upon myself to read every piece of material I can get my hands on. From Stephen Hawking to the lastest space journals. With all that knowledge of the universe and it's vastness, how could anyone believe it's not possible that there is life existing in the far reaches of our universe? They are out there, they have to be. I just wonder how do they get here? Either they live for millions of years or they have found some way to move at the speed of light. You be the judge.
people who see ufos are subject to ridicule and scorn by the sheeple who fear what they cannot understand and will even deatroy those who are different. there are people on this globe who know more than the populace whom they keep ignorant by controlled propaganda of mis-information
There might not be UFOs. For sure, there are lots of life forms in our galaxy, the universe and perhaps other universes. Some people believe the world is to perfect be be created by chance. Religion is the easy way out, science takes more time and study. If you take a handful of seeds and toss them into the desert a few of them will take root and grow. Same with planets, a few of them will orbit around a sun at the proper distance in a developing atmosphere that will support life and in a few million or billion years intelligence will emerge and eventually explore the universe. It all takes time and that's what these 7 day miracle people don't seem to understand.
I too believe that UFO's exist.  I think it's egotistical to think otherwise.  Several of my friends believe as well.  My favorite comment by one of them was "if they do come to get me, I just hope they let me drive!!"  . . . Maybe you had to be there.
Even though this seemed to focus on humor, perhaps as a defense mechanism, it's good to see people in the media who are no longer afraid to lose their jobs or be labeled a nutbag for even giving consideration to the possibility of extra-terrestrial life.

Here're a couple simple facts:
1 - Sane normal people have been seeing flying objects that exhibit properties our science cannot duplicate and/or explain.
2 - The guy who came up with the infamous "swamp gas" explanation, who studied thousands of UFO cases for the government, eventually decided that UFOs are real and most likely originate from another planet.

Resolve that - and I dare it to be done without the CYA giggle defense.

You know, even if life is a stroke of luck, the universe has the numbers to support it millions of times over.
I have never seen a UFO,  but the universe is so vast that to think we are the only ones in it is a bit naive.  But do I want them to come and land here NO--because just the fact that they can come here--they have to be more intellegent than we are.  (we can just barely get to our own moon.) And if they are more intelligent than us, they can control us.  And we, as Humans
do not like to be controlled.

I've seen several U.F.O.'s in my lifetime, even chased one down. afew times I was alone, other times family members and others were arround. Never felt theatened at any time-rather amused at it all.One time in particular was rather quaint as it happened arround xmas.  they were never the same kind of object and they (acted in differant ways). I sort of have my own theories on these extraterrestial beings (whoose to say they're only one kind) and yes I do believe it in a Biblical way and I also believe its a very integral part of our history. p.s. My son is a flight director for Nasa P.S.s. tell Al his co-host  I love them in the morning and we would be (((LOST)) without them!
Ken, Doesn't Louisiana have a bad enough reputation without wacky people like you making silly comments like this on message boards?
And William, what makes you 'sure' that there is other life out there? I agree that there probably is, but, again, what makes you 'sure'? What do you know that everyone else doesn't? :-)
And Lindsey, you hit the nail on the head. If they are out there, how are getting here?
I’m a firm believer in UFO’s. For the main reason, why should we be the only intelligent life in the universe? I have also seen unexplainable lights in the sky which could have logical explanations or not. But the one thing that gets me the most is the government knowing about it and keeping it a huge secret. One of the reasons I could see why is if they release that there really are extraterrestrials visiting this planet  and they know everything about them, which I’m sure they do, everyone is going to want there alternative energy source which I guarantee is not oil. If that were to happen the world economy would collapse on itself. Its just that everyone needs to do there own investigation of the matter and come up with there own conclusion like researching Project Blue Book, or better yet just sit down and watch the Disclosure Projects 2001 Press Conference I can guarantee that will change your mind on what they think about UFO’s. I just hope at some time in the near future I hope that someone gets some hard evidence so that the government will release as much as possible about UFO’s. For the reason that we need to get off our dependency for oil and start taking better care of our planet and not to mention the technology we would yield as well. I would love to travel the speed of light and visit other planets and I’m sure everyone else would as well.
Several years ago in central Utah my father and I saw three round objects flying in triangular formation. They did not make any sound similar to either a jet or piston engine, rather it just seemed like the sound resulted from moving through the air at high speed. They appeared twice and we heard them once more. I don't remember being alarmed but my mother later told me that it really disturbed my father. I have not seen any object(s) of similar appearance since.
Everyone who reads this take it with a grain of salt. This weekend( Sun. Eve 1-13-2008 7ish) I was on my back porch (Central Texas) I was facing the south west looking up to the sky an saw 2 objects, not close but close enough to see.one small an bright an one much bigger then the other seemed like they were almost right next to one another but the larger one was very bright an red looking like it was all most flipping from side to side and back an forth very bright. In my mind I thought maybe a plane in holding? Thinking the two were to close. Kept watching about 15 min to me it looked like they were playing with each other the bigger one being the more agressive.at this point I said to myshelf go get my other half to see this, But not wanting him to say Im crazy. I stayed to myshelf.Thinking that they have not moved enough in the time I had been watching to be a plane?
I go on with my watching at this point it has been about 15 min give or take.At that point all was over just gone. No big show when it left, just gone? Did not say anything to anyone. Wes. mor.come's an my sis calls from New Mex. asking me if I saw anything in the skys in Texas? At that point I got chill's an goose bumps.I have never seen anything that I can't explain,But I say if were out there looking why do people think there can't be other's out there also? Don't hold me to what I saw. Im not even sure what it was but I know it was something. I will remember it for a very long time. Not knowing really what I saw? Goosebumps in Texas
I was not a beleiver until i saw something that i couldn't explain one night in Los Angeles.  I saw a flaming light shoot across the sky changing colors, and if i had not had people there to convince that i was not hallucinating.  It was definetly something not from this world, its funny how much you dont see when you dont look up.
Of course there are beings from another solar system, however, the upper 3% that run this world don't want anyone to believe that, because then they have lost control of it all, something bigger and smarter than themselves, that may take the control away from them!? holy cow!!

BY M.C.MULLEN (PUBLISH AMERICA)
I have seen ufo's and many other outspace objects since I was 2 years old , but the most dramatic one was the evening of 1985 around 5:30 pm when a collective experiance took place ,
If you want further "proof" of E.T. Sightings....Read my book, "VEGAS, The MOB and the dead pig on the dance floor"...   (www.booksbymikey.com)

I am a Las Vegas Pioneer of 50 years and I want you to remember, I sat in my yard and watched the Atomic Bomb go off in the 50's!!  If the wind would have been blowing in a different direction, I wouldn't be wriing this comment!!All the while, the government kept telling us..."Everything is fine"!!!  (Until 20 years later they decided it was bad news since the "fall-out" killed thousands of livestock and they never did give us a body count on humans...)  I sometimes wonder...why!
"The UFO Problem: Time for a Reassessment" by J. King, Major, USAF, dated June 1968,  apaper dealing with future or present ufo races and earth govts.
You do not have to take my own opinion, although i have been a ufo researcher since 1991. I have often tried to get my research findings on to news programs on tv etc  or local newspapers with no success. UFO Cover up ? Thats what the Major above in his college
report assume has been going on when he wrote it in 1968...eerie how it is still relevant 40 years later.
my own work online can be seen if you google the phrases "new jersey ufo" or "steve tobias ufo" -Derr

Do UFOs exist, of course!  UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object.  Any object that isn't moving like a falling rock in the sky is a UFO unless you can identify it as a plane, rocket, satellite, etc.

Is there life in the universe besides us?  Probably.  It is a really big place, certainly microbes must exist somewhere in our universe.

But, to believe there are INTELLIGENT life forms flying SPACESHIPS around earth is crazy.  Even if there were intelligent life on other planets, the odds of them having the capability for space flight far in excess of our own, let alone flying by earth (out of all the planets out there) in order to spy on Billy-Bob...

Possible, sure.  Probable, not.
Surely someone in authority could investigate the flight commands of all F16's in the vicinity of Stephenville on the date of the sighting. At least one witness said an "...F16 was chasing..." That would have happened under official orders.

My greater fear is my own government that does not have the presence of security to see such a large craft. I felt safe from anything because I live so close to the President's Crawford ranch, and enjoy watching the F16's and tanker maneuvers during his visits. If the Air Force cannot see a large airship over Stephenville, I wonder how safe the President feels his ranch is.
Yes  I have seen one, check back in fall of 1965 when people saw them over Michigan.  They were all
over the Air Force Rador Screen.  We were all on a
high alert.
Two topics are being discussed and interwined, it seems.
Is there life on other planets?
and
Are extra terrestrials visiting us today?

Belief in the former doesn't imply belief in the latter. To think that our planet is the only one with intelligent life is mathematically foolish. However, to admit the possibility of extra-planetary life does not end with the conclusion that they are visiting us. A number of people have asserted that there is a government-led conspiracy of UFO cover ups. If aliens were visiting us and chose to openly communicate with us I'm sure they could do so without official Earthly government conscent. Until that day I'll be filling UFO footage in the same nebulous, grainy category as Big Foot, the Lochness Monster, and other bunk that gets far too much air time.

Einstien said when asked are there ET's out there,If not it would be a terrible waste of space. As to the exsistance of UFO's I have seen the F117 and SR71 close-up and in the air also other stealth vehicles. Their manovers do not match what I have seen in my lifetime made by unidentified vehicles. The JSF and F22 come closer but still have audible jet sounds.
I'll have to see one to believe it.If there are "others" out there, why haven't they made substantial, public contact by now?
I have never seen a UFO, yet I have to believe they are there. We try to explore other worlds. Is it too far to believe other beings from worlds do not do the same? To think we are the only beings in the universe is a very narrow school of thought.
I hope to see it someday. Universe is incredibly vast and it would be unwise to believe that we are alone.  Yet, I'd doubt that other beings (aliens) have technology to travel to our planet.  The distance between our planet and other planets are so great that it would be unfathomable to believe that alines can visit our planet even with their supposedly advanced technology
Aliens, or UFO's, or whatever you want to call them, is all just part of a big scam. It was created to keep us focused on something other than what is really going on. If you don't think that you are a unique thing in this universe well that is your concern, but as for me, I take a much higher opinion of myself than that.
Is there anyone out there? absolutly their is, God is out there and has shown that He is in control of everything! Go to the book of Daniel, and look at the dialog between King Nebaceneszer, and the angel, not just any angel He is the angel of the covenant, The Lord Jesus Christ! Yes He is out there watching US, and He does not like the things that He sees.  He has already passed judgement on ALL WHO WILL LIVE UNGODLY IN THIS PRESENT EVIL WORLD!He goes on to say that hell has to enlarge its mouth to recieve the multitudes of those who refuse to believe Him and the WORD that He has sent to us to lift us up to his level. But We have brought Him down to our level, The God that the modern Christian is worshiping is not the Christ of Calvery, not the one who the Desciples worshiped. That Christ, if you lived and sinned like the professors of religion do today, He would call you a Devil, like He did Peter. But the cleargy of today, does not live where he is an example to the flock but a LORD OVER THE FLOCK! Some of them playing with whores, some homosexuals, some living like kings, on money that has been collected to spread the Gospel. Where are the wisemen, Tell me do you that live so low here on earth, expect to enjoy doing nothing but praising God and His Son in eternity? Where do you expect that big change to take place? At death? Death changes nothing, Where does this change take place. AT THE NEW BIRTH WHE THE CHRIST IS BORN INTO YOUR LIFE< THAT IS WHERE THE REAL CHANGE TAKES PLACE! You will never be the same again, you will not live in sin and enjoy it again, when you Fail to do what he says, He corrects you until He brings you to that place of perfect peace and rest in Him, That place where we are able to do rightousness at all times, and there is nothing we do that offends our God! As Jesus came to do the will of the Father, we now are here to do the same thing. Why wouldn't we, we have that same heavenly birth, if we have truely been "born again"   Paul makes this very plain when he said "Christ is in you or you are a reprobate" We are either one thing or the other, Thank God, For Jesus, they caused this all to be possible, and without Him nothing is possible, that counts.
I have never seen a UFO, yet I have to believe they are there. We try to explore other worlds. Is it too far to believe beings from other worlds do not do the same? To think we are the only beings in the universe is a very narrow school of thought.
A UFO is a UFO until it is identified. UFO does not mean alien space craft. Once you know what it is, it is no longer a UFO. I believe almost every person has seen a UFO some time in their life. I feel there is a good possibility there are alien beings somewhere, but will believe it when I see it. UFO's and Bigfoot have never been proven. Pictures and evidence always points to a hoax.
All things are spiritual. And so are these visitors. They mean us NO HARM in fact they will be here to help. There is only one GOD regardless of what book you think is the Truth. There is only oen Truth. Look into your heart.

Namaste
For any alien craft to come here from another galaxy it would be necessary to travel much faster than the speed of light.  Traveling at the speed of light, it takes 100,000 years just to cross the Milky Way! Perhaps there are such things as "worm holes" that warp space and time.  Of course, there's the possibility that these life forms have practically an eternal life span and can live in their crafts indefinitely.
As a God fearing person, I can't believe we still debate whether UFO exist.  It is right in the Bible in Genesis.

As a engineer-physician, it absolutely makes no sense to me that anyone with a statistic background would not have calculated the probablility that a star would not have a floating rock, "planet", that would not be exactly the same distance as ours.
I believe there is life out in the universe somewhere but we will never find it because even if we could travel at the speed of light it would take thousands of years to travel to any planet that could posibly have life on it.  Could some super intelligent life from a distant universe find us, I think we have worse things to worry about like  terrorists here on earth  who wish to destroy us.  I have always found it interesting to consider what could lie out there but I doubt we'll ever find anything in our lifetimes, nor will many generations to come.
Albert Einstein was very clear in his theory of relatively that any mass could not travel at the speed of light. Light can because the photons have no mass. How then could living beings travel to our planet? The nearest neighbor to our sun is approximately 4.3 lightyears away.  The next "neighbor" is over 12 light years away. That means, traveling at the speed of light, it takes 4.3 years to travel to our nearest neighbor, which is a star with no planets. Perhaps "we" have a lot to to learn about physics and space travel.
I live in the hills above Ventura, CA, and my dad, brother, and I all saw a shiny cylindrical object flying VERY quickly south along the coastline... It was a couple years ago, and recently I went on YouTube and actually found a VIDEO from LA county on that date showing the same object that we saw! Either some e.t. intelligence is checking us out or the government is hiding some amazing new technology from us... personally, I think it's the former.
Al, are you ever serious about anything?
Most of the above people must be too young to remember the mid 1950's flap of UFOs.  The best one I saw looked like a small bright blimp with it's light bouncing off the clouds as it passed slowly circling the area.  I was with a group of New Yorkers waiting for the next days papers at 9PM.  We all said it was nothing from earth.  Then it stopped
dead and silent in the sky for a short while before taking off accross the sky at a speed not matched by any technology we knew at that time.  Within seconds it was gone, and it never made a sound.
Hey Marian, learn to spell if you are going to publicly make an arse of yourself. It's aligned. Most of the concepts that were imagined in early science fiction have actually come to be. Even the communicators from Star Trek are the standard flip phones we now use. Don't be ignorant or small minded. Go look at the night sky, the universe goes on and on, we can't comprehend the notion that it has no end, and to think that our little stone in the Milky Way is the only planet out of the INFINITE number of planets that exist, is the only one capable of supporting intelligent life, well you'd have to be stupid, or religious to believe that.
Oh, this will make my day...First, look up the distance to the nearest star/solar system. Then, do some research on the distance to the nearest galaxy...Now, consider what it would take for ANY race to get to our world, and why would they come here of all places ? Do some research on lightspeed travel, and how the laws of physics relates to speed and the subsequent increase in the objects' mass...trust me, there are NO E.T. visitations.
Theere were two orbs Northeast and south west of Jacksonville,Florida in early December last year. also theirs are three Earth like Planet not far from here two have people sames as we are.
I believe people see what they believe to be UFO's.  However, I don't believe they are alien ships from space.  I am a Christian and I beleive that at times, the devil can show people things like UFO's to scare them or make them believe in something like aliens that arn't real.  In this sense, I believe people really do see UFO's, however I don't believe they are aliens.
I believe very much that there are unidentified flying objects. Although I did not see the one near Stephenville the other day, I have seen one close to the area about 20 years ago. Me or my husband could not explain it. Same description. Silent, hovering, dissappearing and reappearing. Who's to say what's out there! All I know is that it was a wild experience that i never forget.
I am a firm believer in UFO's.  Back in August 1984, in westchester county of NY. At a sleep-away camp I was 18years old.  At around 9:30p.m.-10 we were sitting in a hugh field, on a clear night.  The stars were shining very bright and it was a warm clear night.  After a while some one said that an airplane was about o crash and we all looked up to notice that it was not an airplane.  What ever it was, it totally blacked out the sky. It was as big as a football field we were sitting in. It was V-shaped and had colorful lights all around it.  It was flying so low that it just made it over the tops of the trees. The object was so low it seemed that you could have hit it with a rock. As hugh as it was, no sound came from the object.  It was seen for 2-3 nights in the same area.  It was all on the news stations for about a week.
i know me and my driving buddy seen one in 71 when we were out side of hondo tex.we watched it for a long time,it was in the evening it would come down and stay still then shoot back up in a split second
My uncle Marty was a Chief Master Sergeant stationed at Davis Monthan AFB in Tucson, AZ. One night, a family group saw strange lights between us and the nearby mountain range. The darting movements the lights made could not have been performed by any aircraft. When questioned about what the strange lights might be, uncle Marty acted very sheepish and squeamish, and retreated back into the house. He would never discuss the incident again.
I have twice seen UFO's.

The first time I was 12 years old (now 50).
My Mom, Brother & I were sitting on our front porch at almost dark, when a Silent, Green Glowing abject flew right over our heads. I can from behind the house & flew slowly forward. It was very low to the ground. My Brother & I looked at each other & almost cried. My Mom didn't see or here it.

The second time was at the Lake of the Ozarks last summer. We were looking up at all the stars & saw 2 huge lights flying very high, that went back & forth, like Zig Zagging. After they made there way across the sky, about 3 minutes, 3 very fast moving (fighter jets?) chased after them. I was sick that we didn't have our video camera with us!!!!
"If they're out there how are they getting there???" That is silly. GET THERE. What the heck are you talking about? How did we get here. Do you really think this is the starting line of all life and others have to travel away from earth to evolve. :) Come on guys and gals. Lets use our heads. Dark matter is evoked in expulsion and implosion through out the universe. This dark material bends and shifts gravity which effect light which creates quarks and light compounds that COULD "settle" and form protons/neutrons. This is the seed of life and it is ever present in the universe. We are not the begining nor are we the end. The different alien forms, and there will be, are simply the reaction of the building blocks of life to its specific environment. Crabon, Silicon or otherwise. Hope I'm not being rude.
My theory is that there are a few types of aliens and not just one.  And that one of the alien types are humans from the future.  Yes, we are also the aliens that 2 to 3 hundred years in the future have finally figured out time travel and are here to check on things or adjust things where necessary.  Those of you that are involved in worm hole projects and time travel know what I'm talking about.

Believer in California
OHHHH how do they get HERE. The folding of space time. Could I explain it nope, but I bet you that's how. Sorry I got you gals wrong.
If we saw an alien, would we recognize it as intelligent life? There is no reason to believe intelligent aliens would be bipedal with 2 forward looking eyes, 2 oppositional ears, etc.

They would likely be carbon-based - no other building block has the diversity of carbon.

Transportation. Consider that the human race has been transmitting intelligent signals for only about 100 years. Any alien responding to our intelligent signals would have be within 50 light years to have received, then travelled to Earth - and that's assuming they can travel at close to the speed of light. 50 light years is a tiny fraction compared to the size of our galaxy (100,000 light years in diameter). And there are billions of galaxies in the universe. Even if it's highly likely that super-intelligent life exists somewhere in the universe, it is far less likely that super-intelligent life exists with a 50 light year radius of Earth.

What's needed is a way to overcome the apparent speed of light limitation.

Modern physics has not ruled out 'warp drive' - it could be possible to compress the fabric of spacetime in order to overcome the speed-of-light limitation. Our science simply does not know at this time.

Worm holes are also a possibility - though if one were within a couple hundred light years from earth we would probably see evidence of it.

Lots of questions. Few answers.
