The 'Atonement' Dress

The new movie Atonement has been getting a lot of buzz and picked up seven Golden Globe nominations yesterday.

It's also getting a lot of attention for what actress Keira Knightley wears:

We had a version of the dress, designed by Jacqueline Durran, in the studio today, and it has been causing a stir with moviegoers, bloggers and in chat rooms. WATCH VIDEO

Some are saying that the green dress could become this generation's answer to Audrey Hepburn's iconic black dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Though the dress was in the studio, I decided not to try it on -- blue is more my color.

i dont think it's an iconic dress at all, its a fairly pretty one but the green makes her look even more like a huge preying mantis than usual
If she weighed 10-15 more pounds, it would look fabulous!
I WANT that dress. That is probably the most beautiful dress I have ever seen. It's so flattering in all the right places. Keira looks gorgeous in it!
The dress is nice, but it is no Givenchy and certainly not any more memorable than half the dresses you can see on the red carpet nowadays.
It's a lovely dress--but as Knightly's figure proves(and Hepburn's too, while you're at it), you really have to be somethiing of a stick willow to wear it well.
If I had Keira Knightley's hips, maybe, but oh my gosh! That's right where my eyes went. I don't know that the majority of women want eyes to go to our hips first. I personally hope that Audrey Hepburn's (little not necessary) Black Dress is in forever.
How does it stay up? Those straps look pretty flimsy and there's not much under it. Can anybody above a size 0 wear something like that?
i don't like it at all, she needs to weigh 10 pounds more at least!
The dress style is nice, but it would look better in a different color.
This is hideous dress and it's not flattering on her at all. My vote is still for the Hepburn dress.
Looks like a nightgown to me, sorry, not a dress.
She either has a belly piercing or an outee belly button. I can only dream of being able to get away with wearing something so clingy and sheer that every bit of my middle anatomy (or jewelry) is so obvious.
She is a very pretty lady, but I thought she was doing an advert for St. Patrick's Day. Either way the luck of the Irish is upon her. Would like to see this is blue or another color that reflects her beauty, not the dress.
The color is what makes it so breathtaking.  When she comes onscreen in it, you cannot take your eyes off her.
That shade of green is so stunningly beautiful!! Granted KK is a stick, but the cut of the dress really flattered her and gave her a bit more shape...I think it will be iconic as far as dresses that KK is remembered in (i.e. how Marilyn Monroe is often remembered in her white dress from the Seven Year Itch)
Very pretty but looks slightly odd because Keira is so emaciated.
I think the dress is very beautiful, but they should have done something abuot her midsection, it looks like she has a navel ring in it.
Please Do Not Mention Her  or that dreadful dress in the same breath as The beautiful and talented Audrey Hepburn.
That dress was a popular style back in that day-everyone's mum had one even if she looked like a sausage in it. Also, the colour, Ice Green, was terribly popular, too, so the dress was a win/win for women of that era. As for what 21st Cens are calling an Outie or belly ring, they don't know that sometimes one's garter belt twisted-a woman was not a lady if she went without stocking back then-and the twist would show through because of the close fit and the fluid draped fabric. The costume team for this production deserves an Oscar nom at the least for the dead-on accuracy. My mother was beautiful, and wore a similar dress back in th' day-
what is all the hoopla about? she is a beautiful anorexic looking woman in a nightgown!
It's a nice dress but not for the average female in the USA who is 5'6" 160lbs and a size 14.  The dress would look more like a 4 leaf clover in those proportions.
Wow! That is some dress! And when Keira wears it I am in heaven...it is almost as good as the new collection by designer Téddy Kówalski. It is articles like this that keep me glued to the Today show, although Dave Garroway and the monkey were better.  Nice aricle Dan.
I think she happens to look fabulous. I also happen to be a size zero.  The dress is meant for her body type, as it was made for her by the costume designer.
This dress is just breathtaking, its a fabulous green dream! very soon I'm going to a prom and so I'll need a ball gown and I would give hell of a lot to go with this dress! I think it IS an iconic dress!!!
why is everything today about size? If you love the dress and want to wear the dress, then wear it! Who cares? All it take to pull it off is a devil may care attitude and a little bit of confidence. And, maybe, a strapless bodyshaper, they do them in pretty much every lingerie department. To be honest, i'm an english size 22-24 (american size 600 or something, god knows) and i've had a lenght of green silk in my fabric bag for years, and as soon as I saw Atonement I knew what I was doing with it. And that shade is the green version of scarlet, not for everyone, but an absolute stunner. Like I said, attitude is all you need.
I agree that the dress seems very simple at first glance...but when I saw it on Keira in the movie, it was absolutely breathtaking. Such a simple design was brought to life by the vibrant color, and I also think the circumstances that were occuring during her moments in the dress actually made it more vibrant. Of course we've all seen much more extravgant dresses on the red carpet, but this will always be the one I'll remember.
