I Stand With Magic

Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie, were on the show this morning to talk about the I Stand With Magic campaign and their personal fight against HIV/AIDS. WATCH VIDEO

I always marvel at Magic whenever I see him on TV, because I can't help but think back to November 7, 1991.
I was in the seventh grade, headed to a tennis lesson when the news broke on the radio that Magic had HIV and was retiring from the Lakers.

It was a stunning announcement, a presumed death sentence.

Just months before, we had watched Magic and the Lakers in the NBA Finals against Michael Jordan and the Bulls. He was a seemingly immortal star, a global icon celebrated not only for his basketball skills but also his entrepreneurial successes.

The next morning at school, my teacher, Mr. Corzine, had written the poem, To An Athlete Dying Young, by A.E. Housman, up on the board. We talked about Magic's announcement, about HIV/AIDS and what it meant for all of us.

It was obviously a sad discussion, and the conventional wisdom at the time -- as well as the science -- told us that Magic was going to die within 10 years. It was hard to fathom: Magic Johnson, dead of AIDS?

Well, we're 16 years down the line, and not only is Magic still here, he seems to be thriving. And he's not taking his life for granted -- he and his wife are fighting to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS, which is particularly prevalent in the African-American community (according to the Centers for Disease Control, "African-Americans account for nearly one-half of people living with HIV").

And now, with Cookie taking on a more prominent role in the I Stand With Magic campaign, I'm sure her voice will be a powerful addition to the fight against HIV/AIDS, especially for African-American women.

Magic will never get the years on the court he lost because of HIV, and we can only imagine what we, as fans, missed as well. But what Magic is doing now is more important than any no-look pass, any MVP award, any championship.

Sixteen years after Magic's diagnosis, Houseman's poem has not come true. And not only are we still talking about HIV/AIDS, but thankfully, Magic is too.

As Matt Stated I remember where I was the day Magic Johnson announced that he was Diagnosed with HIV! I have been living with HIV for 13 years myself this month on the 26th. I also became involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS about a year later. It's not easy to be pro-active for 13 years let alone 16! There is always the chance of BURNOUT!! So I would like to thank the TODAY SHOW for bringing awareness this years' World AIDS Day to the public! I would also like to THANK, Magic and Cookie for keeping up the fight all these years! THANK YOU from the bottom of my HEART!!
This was a great segment, although I would have like to hear more in depth about what he has done to stay healthy. I would also love to hear more about the latest drugs, and his routine as well.  His wife is a saint, and her comments were well polished. God Bless and Merry Christmas to you all!
Matt Lauer, Thank you for the very responsible feature on HIV 11/29/2007. The medications, HIV awareness programs, educational programs re "safe sex" (translated NO SUCH THING) Magic Johnson, etc. etc. are all very important but you glided right over the most IMPORTANT issue. i.e. Your amazement regarding the number of infected individuals who don't know and furthermore don't want to know.

I wonder if you would take a quick look at our efforts to make a difference in this website

please see the NBC spot from Los Angeles.

Your evaluation and comments will be most appreciated

Thank you
MKK, M.D.
It is hard to believe that an athlete as talented and siilled as Magic Johnson was is infected with HIV/Aids.I am happy the Today show is getting people aware of this deadly diease and it also can be prevented.
I, too, would like to know how Cookie has remained unaffected w/HIV?  I know safe sex, antiviral meds,  & a healthy lifestyle has proven to enhance his quality of life & longevity; however, if I recall, they have additional children.  Knowing that our "Magic" is thriving is extremely enlightening in the educational process, but we need more information RE: infection free marital status after diagnosis of one partner. I,unfortunately, missed the show's airing & as a medical professional, I have an extreme need to know how to caretake.  Thank you.
I believe her, women can be vicious.  competition is not really healthy, is it?
Thanks for everything?  Quick question for you?  Who's the best player to ever play the game!?  Would you call it magic, if I said someone other than yourself?
God Bless This Couple!!!!I was always a fan of Magic & I still believe that he is #1.
I watched Magic and his wife Cookie. I'm always struck by Cookies, "unhappieness". Body language says so much...they sat so far apart and just didn't seem to have any connection with each other. I loved to watch Magic, play for the Lakers, he was so wonderful and full of grace.
