Miss Puerto Rico: Was It Sabotage?

Posted: Wednesday, November 28, 2007 8:27 AM by Dan Fleschner

Well, you've heard Ingrid Marie Rivera's story that she broke out into hives at the Miss Puerto Rico pageant because her makeup, evening gown and bathing suit were sabotaged. WATCH VIDEO

She claims it was probably pepper spray, while skeptics say that she was just having a nervous reaction, that there was no sabotage.

What do you think -- did one or some of her competitors try to knock her out of the pageant? Did she make the whole thing up as a publicity stunt? Or was this all just a simple misunderstanding?

Regardless, Miss Rivera will be competing next year at the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam, where she will presumably have a more stringent security retinue (her clothes, bag and credit card were also stolen during the pageant).

I think it's safe to say that she could find a few guys in the studio and here in the control room who would volunteer to keep her safe in Vietnam.

I am happy that Ingrid has been given the opportunity to share her story.  She has a lifetime of hard work and dedication and it should be taken into consideration.  Nothing in this world is just given, it has to be earned.  And she certainly has earned what she deserves.  Enjoy your crown and, believe me, us who know you well know how good of a job you've done to represent our island, PR.  We are proud of you.

Beauty Pagent Questions:
I'm sure they have medics etc at these events, why weren't they called to assist?
With all the cameras around, why no photos taken?
After hearing Ingrid herself tell the story this morning, I'm convinced the story is a lie to generate publicity for her.  I was at both the preliminary and the final and she never looked like she had a rash or anything.  The final gown was the best held secret and the designer himself dressed her backstage.  So it's impossible that it was tampered with.  And she said she had to take the dress off immediately?  I saw her with the dress on hours after the crowning, in an activity for the press, judges, etc.  There are plenty of pictures to prove it.  I'm in disbelief how the national press let's itself be manipulated like this for publicity reasons.

This story is a smoke screen for the real story, how she was unfairly favored from day 1 because of her close personal friendship with the owner of the pageant in PR.  She was even a JUDGE in last's years competition!!!  Everyone that was there saw how the final question was selected by the host among other questions, and how the envelop with the final result was delivered back stage before finally emerging on stage many minutes later.  This is the real story and the real scandal.  Although to be honest, as a puertorican, both stories make me very much ashamed of how the pageant is conducted in Puerto Rico.
Oh yeah.... it was definately sabotaged. Ive competed in pageants for a few years now, and I know first hand. Things seem ok on stage but behind the scenes its a battle. Last year a friend offered to iron my interview suit and scortched it. Thats how bad things get, anything anyone can do to keep you from winning they will.
Poor girl, she is so beautiful. I can't believe it!
Just one picture of the supposed huge red bumpy rash would do a lot to make it look like she's not a paraniod young women who thinks that all other women are out to get her because they're so "jealous."
How can ANYONE believe her? She is just another stuck up, snobby brat who always gets her way. Aren't young girls supposed to look up to beauty queens?? I don't think she deserves ANYTHING.
Now i know why she won, she's stunning and gorgeos and I believe her! good luck!
I dont really think that women in the pageant would do something like sabatoge herr clothes with pepper spray. After hearing the story you think there would have been more publicity about it but there wasnt even any pictures or anyone saying they say the incident. I dont know what to believe. but she better hope she's telling the truth or she could risk losing her crown and title .
She was the best!
THIS WOMAN INGRID, HAS BEEN DATING THE SON OF THE WOMAN THAT HANDLES THE MISS PUERTO RICO UNIVERSE PAGENT, MRS. FOBLES, AND THAT IS WHY SHE WON THE CONTEST, I AM SURE IT WAS BOUGHT OUT, DIDNT ANYONE SEE HOW WHEN SHE PICKED HER QUESTION FROM THE BOWL SHE PICKED UP MORE THAN ONE PAPER AND OSVALDO RIOS CHECKED THE PAPERS AND PUT 2 BACK INTO THE BOWL? THAT IS BECAUSE THEY ALREADY KNEW WHAT QUESTION TO ASK HER, SHE IS PHONY NOTHING HAPPENED TO THIS GIRL IN THE PAGENT, ALL SHE WANTS IS HER 15 MINUTES OF FAME. WHAT EVER HAPPEND TO PAGENTS THAT WERE REAL AND TRUE? THIS IS SO POTHETIC, I AM PUERTORICAN AND THIS JUST MAKES ME FEEL ASHAME! WATCH LA COMAI, SHE HAS BEEN SAYING FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS THAT INGRID WAS GOING TO WIN THE CONTEST BECAUSE SHE WAS DATING OR SLEEPING OR WHATEVER WITH MRS FOBLES SON!!! DESPIERTA BORICUAAAA!!!!!!
She's perpetrating...I think she did it herself and is using this opportunity for publicity just incase she lost.  She has some issues.
I just don't think I buy it... it seems way too much like a publicity stunt. If I am wrong then my apologies to the girl, but it just seems way too absurd to be true.
Wanda:

even though I agree with your post, I don't think this Ingrid has the brains to pull this out... I'm convinced that the orquestration came from Magali Febles' office... here is why:

1. NOBODY had access to the nightgown BEFORE she put it on, since it was in the designer's hands.... so, nobody, except the BOSS could have override the designer's chain of custody....
2. she claims she had to change inmediately.....yet, there are pictures of her in the gown HOURS after the event...
3. she could not have access to Osvaldo Rios prior to the contest, but Magali could!!!!
4. you need somebody with 'power' to by-pass the rule of thumb in this pagents: judges do not participate!!!!!
5. how many people do you know who can describe the texture of "pepper-spray"???? I don't recall ever having access to it...... and in some reports she was the one who first put out the "pepper-spray" version, before she attributed it to the security guard.....

hey, NBC... why don't you dig into this a little more????? I'm sure it will nto be a problem to find pictures of Ingrid with Mrs. Febles' son PRIOR to the beggining of the pageant...
SHE IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT MISS UNIVERSE 2008 , I KNOW DONALD TRUMP IS HAPPY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$  SHE IS BEAUTIFUL
Considering that a covering WAS found on some of her clothes while at the pageant, it's hard to believe that the whole thing would be her faking it.  The clothes are checked and rechecked, so for something to be found afterwards means obviously that it had been tampered with when nobody was supposed to be making contact with the outfits or makeup.  As for the accusation that she looked at several questions and chose one, or that the judges put two back because they knew which one to pick, after watching the competition I don't see anything to suggest this is true.  There's many accusations out there, but without a reason to believe there or even a shred of evidence, I can't just accept that they're true, no matter what I think of the character of the person being accused.
I believe that most of the people commenting bad about Ingrid do no know what her family values are.  She comes from a very religious family and wounderful parents.  I know, because I know them.  She would never invent something like that.  Is not her.  Also, she did not have to say those things to win,(SHE IS A WINER).
I got this from wikipedia..Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent as opposed to an irritant. It causes immediate closing of the eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and coughing. The duration of its effects depend on the strength of the spray but the average full effect lasts around thirty to forty-five minutes, with diminished effects lasting for hours.--- so if the pepper sprayed happened, how come her eyes are not affected, the white of her eyes are still white and isnt it other people around her should be affected too???? just asking
The case was proven to be truth just by reading this blog.  I do not know Mss. Rivera or have any relationship with her, but it scares me to read so much hatred by (what is obvious) family and friends of other candidates.  I saw the pagent, and she was by far the prettiest girl there and seeing her interview in Today, there is no question in my mind that she had what it takes to win. I hope the press put this to rest and we can focus in learning more about the econony and middle eastern conflict.
We believe her.
OF COURSE WOMEN WOULD SABOTAGE A PRETTY THREAT. DUH!! WOMEN ARE EVIL AND UNDERHANDED, ESPECIALLY PRETTY ONES. LEAVE THE DAMN GIRL ALONE. WHY AM I EVEN WASTING MY TIME ON SOMETHING AS STUPID AS THIS- AND YOU ALL NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SPELL
I cannot believe we focus still so much in beauty pageants and women get so into it that they would do things of this nature.  My best friend was training for the Miss Puerto Rico pageant many years ago (she dropped out) and she tells of the "brutality" and "abuse" they are subjected to, the "torture" to win, the humilliation associated with it.
I wonder, is it all worth it?

I don't doubt anyone would do such a thing, whether this particular case was true or not I don't know, but people are capable of anything in order to get what they want.  Envy and ambition go hand in hand and if you cannot differentiate between them, you fall pray to its "claws".

Everyone is entitled to their 15 minutes of fame.  Let her enjoy hers.  Maybe it's 15 minutes, maybe a year, we'll al forget who she is in 15 minutes too (or a year or two).  Go ahead ask me who was last years Miss Puerto Rico, I have no idea!  Which is very good, because if I remembered there would be something really wrong with me!

Of course, there I will be glued to my TV watching Miss Universe, cheering for Miss Puerto Rico, no matter what she looks like or who she is, if her win was fixed (as it pretty much always is) or not, if she is the dumbest woman on earth or not, it doesn't matter, I will always cheer for Miss Puerto Rico.
But come on, let's move on to other important issues.
I saw the interview with the current Ms Puerto Rico.
Anything is possible and the truth will come out! Ms.Rivera's claims of pepper spray on her outfits and make up wouldn't be made up!But if she is lying, she will be a disgrace to Puerto Ricans. I have good faith in the Lord and the real story is being investigated. The fact that she won because of her relationship with the pageant organizer is questionable.Perhaps pagent officials should disqualify those with any pagent relationships or previous judges.Rules are meant to be broken and anyone may had a reason to be jealous.I don't think by causing harm to others is a good idea. Glad to see Ms Rivera is a beautiful winner and speaks English also. I hope she wins in Vietnam. She claims she has overcome many obstacles and by winning the crown in Vietnam, she will again rebound.
Innocent till proven guilty! I hope they find the person who supposedly tried to sabotage the pageant.
Good Luck Ms Rivera and may the truth be found out soon! Don't let your people down! ;O)
pepper spray doesn't normally make you break out in hives, hives is caused by nerves
I cannot believe such a story made national news.  This contestant has been Miss World Puerto Rico before, and was a judge LAST year at this contest.  How can anybody believe she really competed and won fairly. Everybody in Puerto Rico knows this contest has always been fixed. Why the shock now? About the pepperspray, Have you seen somebody after being sprayed with this chemical? Very unconfortable for the person, which I doudt would have allowed her to look normal during the competition. Guess she now has to find a way to look like the victim and get sympathy from our community.  Let's see how she performs at Miss Universe. what story will she come up then???
Miss Puerto Rico Ingrid Marie Rivera is indeed very beautiful and deserving of the praise she is getting. Hearing some of these negative comments and bad excuses sounds more like we have haters. One who does not believe this type of behavior happens by beautiful girls/women in beauty pageants must live under a rock because it happens a lot or more than you think. To suggest one who has won Miss Barranquitas World 2002, Miss Puerto Rico Hawaiian Tropic 2002, Miss Puerto Rico Global Queen 2003, Miss Global Queen 2003, Miss Dorado World 2005, Miss World Puerto Rico 2005, Miss World Caribbean 2005, Miss Dorado Universe 2008 broke out because of a nervous reaction by being in a beauty pagent is just plan silly. Ingrid Marie Rivera met the qualifications to compete just like everyone else did. There are those who say she was a judge last year so that was supposed to disqualify her! Many others and I have judge many track meets and wrestling meets that we did not compete in. That did not give us an advantage when we did. We have two feet, legs and arms our competitors had two feet, legs and arms. It never gave us an advantage. To those who say it was not visible that Marie Rivera was in pain or discomfort so she is lying then you don't know what it is to be a winner. Many athletes when we are hurting do not let on or show that we are hurting or in pain we sucked it up, go out and win just like Ingrid Marie Rivera. I truly believe there are those who where afraid, scared of loosing and saw Ingrid Marie Rivera as a real threat to them. I saw the whole Today interview several times just to make sure I did not miss something because of the fictions accounts some people are saying. To the haters stop making excuses why the one you wanted to win did not or why Ingrid Marie Rivera did. When it came down to it Ingrid Marie Rivera was the most beautiful woman in the eyes of the judges and was the most qualified to be Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2008 and compete in Miss Universe 2008. I will be rooting for her to win!!!
For all those thinking it was made up, another story says testing has confirmed pepper spray on the clothing.
This sounds a lot like a reaction to a chemical. I've had rashes and burning, swellings, and stinging, etc., from chemicals, including airborne chemicals like dryer sheets and laundry detergents, but it tends to fade rapidly. You just want to wash it off and forget it ever happened. You don't want to tell other people because you don't want them to think you're nuts or deficient in some way.
I think this is all for publicity and she shouldn't have been allowed to run for Miss PR after being a judge the year before. I think the Miss PR organization is desperate to win Miss Universe, since last year Miss PR didn't even make it into the top 20 finalists and this is a good way to get PR in the lime light. If the pepper spray incident is true, which i don't think it is, I'm sorry it happended to her. But the truth of the matter is, she shouldn't had been in the contest in the first place with the experience she had as a judge. Plus dating the son of Magaly F. There were too many conflict of interest.
Who cares whom she was sleeping with? or that she has been a past judge? That's more reason for why someone would do that to her so she is obviously not lying. People are jealous of her because she is freaking gorgeous. Please leave her alone and get a life. Cause she obviously does not care about the jealous ones
Um Her skin looks flawless! where are the hives!?
She's gorgeous, darling, gorgeous, hope she wins.
Very seldom do I watch pageants because I truly believe that the winner has already been chosen.  As far as this pepper spray incident, I've never been sprayed or used it in any way but I've seen how others react to the spraying.  I really don't think she would be so brave and faithful to continue the contest if this is true.  And to bring God and faith into all of this is shameful.  How can you become so desperate over a beauty pageant, not remembering that beauty is only skin deep if God is actually in their life.  I can't believe Trump is hustling beauty pageants now. A man that is as brilliant as he is into beauty pageants that seem to be becoming more and more trashy.
Very Ironic.Rivera is without a doubt a gorgeous girl, but we have every existant proof to show that this is all made up. Especially the pictures of her wearing the gown hours after the competition. And who could of had access to that dress besides the designer? And if so, I think other people would of noticed some jealous girl putting some pepper spray on her dress, and this supposed girl would of had some on her anyways. Plus when she was talking with the press, she said : "This is a beauty pageant. Why would I do this to myself?" I mean this an absolute tell all. Also considering that beauty pageants are flooded with hatred and jealousy. But still not to forget that she was a judge only one year before becoming a participant... Coincidence? I think not. I really think all of this is a scam, and maybe prove me wrong. Need I say more?
This girl is drop dead gorgeous and shes going to win. please put me on her sequrity team.
Oh please! the girl was the most beautiful in the pageant. And theres nothing in the rule book that says that somebody experienced cant compete. It puts me to shame that ppl who are defending her are NOT puertorricans. These contests are fixed...all of them, theres always favorites; whether it is because of a "cinderella story", or because theyre wealthy. These kinds of pageants must pick girls who can handle the stress of it all, experienced and if this girl can put a pretty face while her body is breaking out in hives, she is the one.
It's like an April Fool's Day joke that went out of hand. I think this act of trying to "sabotage" one's chances of winning is more common than we think in any competition. This is kinda too much. Miss Puerto Rico handled it beautifully. Much kudos to her...
I'm allergic to everything and when I get allergy reactions from clothing, the rashes and hives appear only where the skin is in contact with the fabrics. The rest of the skin is flawless. Most of the time I won't see anything till I get my clothes off. And the itching and burning is horrible, but if I'm at an important meeting with an important client, I'm all smiles.
I can't wait to see her in Miss Universe 2008. She is beautiful and will give Puerto Rico the 6th Miss Universe crown.
MISS PUERTO RICO is a good example of grace under fire... your poised and intellect is a refulgence of your inner beauty!

Police should have dismissed this investigation immediately for 2 reasons:

1. The alleged sabotage occured Friday, yet the dress passed through tens of hands before being turned in to the police on Monday. Who cares if it tests positive for pepper spray? Someone had all day Saturday and all day Sunday to tamper with it.

2. There are pictures on the official Miss PR website that show Ingrid wearing her dress for HOURS after the final competition, laughing and celebrating among the press and her family. These pictures are all the evidence the police needs to prove that she was in no hurry to get out of her dress.

I can't believe this publicity stunt has garnered so much attention, or that the police are still going through an "investigation" in spite of the two previous points. Wake up, fools.
Ingrid I am proud of you even though you are not representing my city. You are extremely beautiful and I believe you. I know hands down your will win the sixth crown. I really dont think she would have invented a fictional story like that one. Good Luck Ingrid!!!!
Pepper spray doesn't cause your eyes to swell closed or your lungs to close up unless you inhale it.  If it is sprayed onto a surface that you later come into contact with, it will cause a welt-like rash on your skin, very similar to hives.  I know this because a friend of mine sprayed it all over his brother's socks once.  Talk about giving somone the "hot foot".  He had welts and blisters for days.
I find this entertaining to tell you the entire truth. Show me pictures or proof of the hives, the rashes, the red areas, medical proof and non affiliated investigator's final lab report about the substance in which Rivera claims so positively is Pepper Spray and I will not be entertained by this anymore.

I'm Puerto Rican too but this means a damn thing--I'm a US Citizen, Ex Marine family man and I'm not buying this one bit. I can tell you from my military experience how horrible it is to come fully in contact from head to toe with clothing fully engulfed in pepper spray and she would have be on the ground, teary eyed, vomiting with alot of mucus fluid uncontrolably being released instantainiously by such a chemical.

Miss Rivera posesses something myself and my fellow Marines do not have as part of the "make up" of the body because the complications of pepper spray severely and immediately altered our ability to perform normal footsteps let alone the routine of a contest and even remembering your last foot step.
Ingrid,
Keep up the good work on representing our island. For all those people who insist the story is a lie, stop hating and get a life. Why is everybody so concerned as to who she slep with? She's a very beautiful Puertorican who will bring home the Miss Universe crown in 2008.
This is nothing new I have watched pageant documentaries and one contestant had said that one other contestant's dress had been ruined.I think the others know she would win and that is why they sabotage her dress and swimsuit.Let's hope they will continue to do a search on how this incident even happened in the first place.
I have to agree with Iris from SanJuan.  What's up with the beauty pagents these days?  For years, you hardly hear anything about the pagents as interest in them has fallen off.  But in the past year, we have one queen in rehab, one kissing women in bars and now this.  I have to wonder if its publicity on a bigger scale.
For all of you who have not heard, the PR Police Chief informed the tests done came out NEGATIVE.  And even advised the Miss PR Organization that lying to the police is a lie and that he will investigate further and not allow police resources to be waisted on a publicity stunt.  The national networks that gave so much publicity to the stunt, should now also publish the negative results.

Networks should also cover the real story, how the pageant was a fraud from day 1, proven by the fact that the envelop with the final result was NOT handed directly to the host, but instead was LOST backstage for many minutes before finally emerging from BACKSTAGE and given to the host.  THIS IS FRAUD!!!
I don't think she is lying.  The problem in all of this is that she was badly advice.  First of all, where are the peagant organizers?  And whose idea was it to send her in front of the world without some real evidence.  Peagant security intially suggested that pepper spray was the substance in the dress.  Peagant organizers assumed they were correct and went with it.  Big mistake!  This whole thing could have been prevented had the organizers waited for some results from the police.  Lastly, does anyone know why this is being made such a big story?  Could it be that NBC has a major stake in all of this.  After all, they are part owners of the peagant and will be broadcasting Miss Universe 2008.  Maybe that's the reason the story was picked up so quickly and why she went in front of the cameras in such a rush.  My advice to her is to close her mouth until she has some real evidence that she can present.  However, that may not be an option in this case since The Miss Universe Corp. is owned by NBC.  I’m sure they’ll be pressuring her for more interviews.
i just want to say, "my cousin" "Ingrid" has worked extremly hard to get where she is, your kiddin yourself that she would throw away a lifetimes work and has proved that over and over again.......Please!.,
" Ingrid " we are all proud of you, and love you very much, Watch Your Back!!! ( Primo Raymond son of Clotilde, Massachusetts
