Half my size after losing 200 pounds!

(From Shelley Napier)

Hi! My name is Shelley, I am a hairstylist from Wadsworth, Ohio and I have struggled with weight my whole life. Although I was chubby as a child, and heavy as a teenager, it wasn’t until my twenties when I gained most of my weight. At my heaviest I weighed 326 pounds. Some days I felt so self-conscious that it was hard for me to even get out of bed. Just trying to find clothes and getting dressed to go out was a challenge. I always felt like people were judging me based on my weight and couldn’t see past it to see who I was inside. I was so unhappy most of the time, which I think also made me develop a bad attitude. I used food to cope and whenever I felt happy, sad, bored or lonely, I would turn to food.

Before I changed my eating habits I would eat whatever, whenever. My weaknesses were fast food and sweets. A typical day for me would be to skip breakfast (or eat a breakfast pastry), indulge in a fast food meal for lunch, and then dinner would be pizza or Chinese takeout. And when I would order fast food, it had to be with everything. If I ordered a burger, I would put bacon and heavy sauces on top. I loved heavy sauces. And I would add a super-sized fries and soda – sometimes with chicken nuggets and a frostie. I would snack on chocolate bars at night.

The turning point for me came when I was thirty-one. My twenties had flown by, and I felt that I had wasted so much of my life heavy and unhappy and I did not want to spend the rest of my life being overweight. I work in a salon, so it is very important for me to look and feel good about myself.

I had tried losing weight in the past – one time I even lost seventy-five pounds. However, it only took six months for me to put the weight back on, and it made me feel miserable. I felt worse than I had felt before I had ever lost a pound.

Then, I decided to try Slim-Fast and to start walking. I lost the first 150 pounds using the Slim-Fast plan. I stayed on it for a year and a half. I love sweets, and I liked the way it tasted, so I didn’t get tired of it. I would usually have a shake for breakfast, a bar for lunch, and then a healthy, portion-controlled dinner of fish, chicken or pasta with lots of veggies. I would add a couple of healthy snacks during the day such as boiled eggs, carrots or a couple of crackers. My nighttime snack was usually a low-calorie popsicle or something similar.

After losing 150 pounds, I switched to back to regular food and lost another fifty pounds. Today, my diet consists of oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and chicken or fish and veggies for dinner. I always snack in between on fruit and vegetables. The most important thing for me is portion control. I still enjoy food – and even splurge sometimes – but everything in moderation. When I go out for dinner, I will split dessert. I just try to make smarter choices.

When I first started with my exercise program, I started with about ten to fifteen minutes a day and kept adding minutes until I worked my way up to thirty minutes. At one point I was working out about forty or forty-five minutes, but that was hard for my to stick to, so I brought it back down to thirty. It wasn’t until I lost 100 pounds that I started running. I started slowly, and eventually I was running the full thirty minutes!

I was running thirty minutes, seven days a week for about a year, when an injury forced me to cut my workout down. Now, I have made peace with walking thirty minutes five days a week. When I first started losing weight, I was also doing weight training, but currently I do not do any weight training.

My advice is that it’s not about dieting – but rather about making permanent changes in your life. Find a program that fits your lifestyle and stick with it long enough to see some results. Plan meals in advance and always be prepared. This has been a long, difficult journey, but after losing 206 pounds, I know that it was definitely worth all of the hard work. Getting started was the hardest part. If you can just get started and believe in yourself, you can do it. Some days you might want to just pull your hair out and eat a whole bag of cookies, but it’s just not worth it. If I can do it, you can do it too.

Shelley,
Great job on Monday!  I really admire you for telling the ups and downs of your weight loss story.  People see you now, achieving your goal, but I want them to realize how many times you slipped up and started over.  It's a life lesson that when we mess up or when life is hard, we have to keep trying, that's what God wants from us.  And you have shown that to us with your weight battles.  Love, Jenny
Congratulations on your success! We love you!
You look awesome!! Congratulations on your success. You will reap the benefits for years.
My friend emailed me your story this morning! All I can say is WOW! I could relate ALOT with your story. I have been overweight my entire life. I am 25 and curently weigh 322 lbs. Within the last 3 months I have managed to loose 20lbs by exercising and eating right, after my obgyn told me I had to loose weight in order for my husband and I to have children! You are a huge inspiration to me, and I know its possible even for me to achieve!!!!
Hi Shelley,
Good Job! You have accomplished something that not many people can do on their own-including myself.  I've been struggling with weight for 30 years.  Sometimes food is my only friend.  You are an inspiration! How long did it take you to lose your weight?  I feel like there is hope for me.  Thank You, Beverly
Hello Shelly, I too strugle with weight loss and just two weeks ago, here at work we started a Biggest Looser Club and I think that that is what has given me a push towards weight loss.  I need to loose 50 pounds and one day at a time with help from co-workers and weight watchers I have lost 5 pounds.  I am sick and tired of being fat and I am ready to say good by to it.  p.s. you look fabulous!!
Shelley,

I can't stop thinking about your appearance on the Today Show! You ARE the same person you have always been - beautiful - and beautiful to everyone you know! Thanks for being courageous enough to share your story.
Shelley,
You have always been beautiful. And now you are radiant! It's not just your slim, healthy body but there is a glow about you. It's nice seeing that things have come full circle and that you are now so comfortable in your own skin. I am so happy for you.  You are an inspiration to all of us. Life can be difficult but you've proven that if you want something bad enough you can achieve anything. What an amazing accomplishment. I am thrilled that you are getting the recognition that you deserve. Way to go girl!!!! We are all so proud of you!
Shelley you are amazing and I just wish you the best of luck in all you do. Congrats on losing the weight and keeping it off, you look great!
Hi Shelley I am a friend of Danielle and she told our class about your truly amazing and inspirational story. I am EXTREMELY proud of you. Great job you look Fabulous.
Shelly, Way to go you are a natural on T.V..  What an inspiration you are.  I can only hope that one day I will be able to do the same.
Hey beautiful girl.  I am so proud of you and the determination that you had to do so. You looked amazing on the show. You are awesome. Love you mama!!!!
First I just got to address those who have sent in critical emails. I know Shelley personally, which means I've seen her in person and no she's not too thin. She has worked harder than most will ever know to get where she is today. She lost her weight the old fashioned way, through eating right and excercising. She should be celebrated for having the courage to share her story.
Shelley I just want to thank you for being so honest about your struggle and caring more about helping others than about what some might say. Honey you are an inspiration and may I say Bad Ass!!! I am so proud of you! Thank you for all the talks we've had that have helped me along in my weight loss journey. It has always been so wonderful to have somebody who understands exactly where I'm coming from and isn't afraid to be real about it!! Keep being you Mama 'cause you're doing it!!
Love~ Melissa
Shelly, Congratulations! You are very inspirational. Thanks for the motivation.
shelley, I am in the health care field and treat all my patients the same.  But, let's face it looking great means feeling great.  We have to see ourselves everyday and the extra pounds make you more tired and less self confident.  Hooorrrraaayyy for you I am so glad you made it.  I need to loose about 30 pounds but it is my fault I haven't lost those pounds. If it is to be it is up to me.  I am going to keep trying and I am extremely happy for you. God bless you.
I have given up on weight loss, I am sorry but I have tried everything.  I just can't control myself, and my job for the past year sitting on my backside for 9 hours a day on the computer has cut my exercise down to zero.  I feel alone.  My job is stressful, and I pick at stuff I should not eat.  I belong to the local Y but can't find the time to get there when they have open swim time, etc.  I feel horrible.  Congrats to you all because you have more guts than I do.
This story is really inspirational. I have never been "small" always size 10-14.  I thought then I was big, only to realize 7 yrs after high school, and now a size 18 I loved the way I looked in size 10-14.  I have never been much on foods, but the older I get, the more I want to try different foods. This has led to me craving these foods.  My favorite shows include anything on FoodNetwork.

I saw "Today" about 4 wks ago and saw Shelley and thought to myself, "my God, what's my excuse." I don't really know what happened that day, but I decided then that I would get control of my life while I'm in my twenties.  Being 25 and overweight is tough on the self-esteem.  I made a list of things that stood in the way of my success and realized that lack of consistancy and discipline was the common denominator.  I have been working out 7 days a week at least 30mins, and I drink 70 oz water (with lemon) each day, I enjoy an apricot smoothie with wheat germ for breakfast ( trust me it's delicious), a light BLT with canadian bacon, 11 baby carrots and an apple with milk for lunch and baked boneless, skinless chicken breast, broccoli, and a baked potato for dinner.  The most amazing part is I've stuck to this routine for more than a week which I've never done before.  Thank you so much Shelley for my life altering decisions and health.  I'm really proud of you for your determination and dedication to lose those lbs. To everyone else, be encouraged.
WOW YOU REALLY MADE ME WANNA TRY AND KEEP UP WITH MY DIETING AND EXCERSISE
Oh my GOD!!!! I am 26 years old and 3 weeks ago my weight was 283 lbs. I started on a special diet and so far I have lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks ... you are an inspiration for a lot of people..... I do not know why I took so long for me to realize that my weight was killing all my aspects of my life, I used to wake up  and din't feel like even getting out of bed because I had to dress up and no clothes would fit in...NOw my life has changed my husband is very excited ,my eating habits turned  100% and my life has a  new meaning and reason to be other than thinking about food all day long. Way to go girl.... I wish I could achieve what you did !!!!!!!!!!Congratulations
