Half my size after losing 200 pounds!

(From Shelley Napier)

Hi! My name is Shelley, I am a hairstylist from Wadsworth, Ohio and I have struggled with weight my whole life. Although I was chubby as a child, and heavy as a teenager, it wasn’t until my twenties when I gained most of my weight. At my heaviest I weighed 326 pounds. Some days I felt so self-conscious that it was hard for me to even get out of bed. Just trying to find clothes and getting dressed to go out was a challenge. I always felt like people were judging me based on my weight and couldn’t see past it to see who I was inside. I was so unhappy most of the time, which I think also made me develop a bad attitude. I used food to cope and whenever I felt happy, sad, bored or lonely, I would turn to food.

Before I changed my eating habits I would eat whatever, whenever. My weaknesses were fast food and sweets. A typical day for me would be to skip breakfast (or eat a breakfast pastry), indulge in a fast food meal for lunch, and then dinner would be pizza or Chinese takeout. And when I would order fast food, it had to be with everything. If I ordered a burger, I would put bacon and heavy sauces on top. I loved heavy sauces. And I would add a super-sized fries and soda – sometimes with chicken nuggets and a frostie. I would snack on chocolate bars at night.

The turning point for me came when I was thirty-one. My twenties had flown by, and I felt that I had wasted so much of my life heavy and unhappy and I did not want to spend the rest of my life being overweight. I work in a salon, so it is very important for me to look and feel good about myself.

I had tried losing weight in the past – one time I even lost seventy-five pounds. However, it only took six months for me to put the weight back on, and it made me feel miserable. I felt worse than I had felt before I had ever lost a pound.

Then, I decided to try Slim-Fast and to start walking. I lost the first 150 pounds using the Slim-Fast plan. I stayed on it for a year and a half. I love sweets, and I liked the way it tasted, so I didn’t get tired of it. I would usually have a shake for breakfast, a bar for lunch, and then a healthy, portion-controlled dinner of fish, chicken or pasta with lots of veggies. I would add a couple of healthy snacks during the day such as boiled eggs, carrots or a couple of crackers. My nighttime snack was usually a low-calorie popsicle or something similar.

After losing 150 pounds, I switched to back to regular food and lost another fifty pounds. Today, my diet consists of oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, a salad for lunch and chicken or fish and veggies for dinner. I always snack in between on fruit and vegetables. The most important thing for me is portion control. I still enjoy food – and even splurge sometimes – but everything in moderation. When I go out for dinner, I will split dessert. I just try to make smarter choices.

When I first started with my exercise program, I started with about ten to fifteen minutes a day and kept adding minutes until I worked my way up to thirty minutes. At one point I was working out about forty or forty-five minutes, but that was hard for my to stick to, so I brought it back down to thirty. It wasn’t until I lost 100 pounds that I started running. I started slowly, and eventually I was running the full thirty minutes!

I was running thirty minutes, seven days a week for about a year, when an injury forced me to cut my workout down. Now, I have made peace with walking thirty minutes five days a week. When I first started losing weight, I was also doing weight training, but currently I do not do any weight training.

My advice is that it’s not about dieting – but rather about making permanent changes in your life. Find a program that fits your lifestyle and stick with it long enough to see some results. Plan meals in advance and always be prepared. This has been a long, difficult journey, but after losing 206 pounds, I know that it was definitely worth all of the hard work. Getting started was the hardest part. If you can just get started and believe in yourself, you can do it. Some days you might want to just pull your hair out and eat a whole bag of cookies, but it’s just not worth it. If I can do it, you can do it too.

congrats.Doesnt it feel great to be healthy. You look awesome .Inspirational.
I find this article about Shelley sooooo inspiring.
I don't even know her...yet I'm proud of her!
I am only 15 lbs overweight but just cannot seem to lose it.  I go down 3 lbs..then up 3 lbs.  Of course I am now over 65 yrs old and believe me....it was much much easier to maintain my weight 20 years ago.
Please Shelley....stick to it.  You look terrific!
(hmmm, guess I'd better start walking faster/longer)
Kudo's to you Shelly! I too struggle w/ being over weight since high school (236lbs top)I know I need to start taking myself seriously and only I can make it happen, since I will be 40 next May it will only get harder.  I have a beautiful size 13, 5' 9" 15 yr old daughter and handsome lil 3yr old son and I miss hearing from my spouse the word "beautiful"!  We are all beautiful inside, but it's nice to hear it in reflection to our outter self also.  So if nobody's said it yet Shelly~ YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL INSIDE AND OUT!D-St. Louis, MO
This is for Shelly.  I am interested in doing the Slim Fast Diet, too.  Did you do anything to jazz up your shakes, like adding any fruit, whey or something to thicken them.  Also did you use the blender at all?  And did the shakes and bars really keep you satisfied?  I am also a sucker for sweets and the Slim Fast Shakes and bars are really delicious.

Thanks for your answers.

Wow - I could have changed nothing but the name and locations in your story and it would have been me I was talking about.  (At least up until the weight loss success, which I still haven't had!)  Thanks for sharing a remarkable story and reminding me that I'm not alone in my struggles, weaknesses, or ability to change.  You look amazing and I wish you the best.
I am so envious of your determination and discipline.  I was up to 320 five years ago and had gastric bypass surgery.  I lost 120 pounds, and then began to give up some of the disciplines - drinking water, exercise, eating enough protein.  I have gained back about 30 pounds and I am just sick about it.  I am going to be 60 next month, so I know that it is harder for me to loose because of metabolism issues, etc.

I was going to start swimming this morning, but couldn't  get myself to put on that suit.  I still need to loose 75 pounds.  I have to reach my goal, for once in my life.

I tried to do a liquid diet like you did with Kashi - it has a lot more protein than Slim Fast, but I got tired of it.  Perhaps that is the answer, at least for a while.

Good luck - you are terrific.  wish me luck.
Your story gives me inspiration. Thanks.
Well first of all congrats on your weight loss!!! I've been struggling with weight since I was a teen and your story has encouraged me to make a change. Thanks for sharing your story!
The story is inspirational indeed but after seeing how Shelly looks, I cannot help but wonder if she has taken the weight loss a bit too far. If one considers that the camera adds 5 pounds +, she appeared extremely thin. Let's be cautious as to what message is being broadcast to the women of America; be healty not anorexic, please!
Hi!  Like you, I was overweight.  Key word:  WAS!  I was at 200 pounds for a few years.  I kept gaining, and gaining, and gaining.I did the Provida diet and stuck to it!  In 13 weeks, I had lost 51 pounds.  I am down 60 pounds and feeling much healthier.  Great job Shelley!  You had more to lose than I.  It all boils down to will power and determination.
Wow, Shelley, you look really amazing, and thank you for sharing your story with us and for allowing us to share in your joy and struggles. It's an awesome message of what we CAN do when we are determined to change! And it was absolutely the best thing on TV, this morning -- those pictures are worth more than a thousand words of inspiration for everyone who thought they couldn't! Yes, you can!! XOXO
Only caught the tail end of your story this morn on the show and decided to go on line to check it out, truly inspirational and motivating. Thank you soooo much for sharing your story. I am going to start today and give it my all. God Bless
wow ! yOU LOOK great !!! i SAW YOU ON THE tODAY SHOW THIS MORNING   : )
You look so terrific!  I would like to go on the 1400 calories a day but would like the break-down of how many many fat grams, carbs, etc. you eat per day.  It was on the TODAY show but I didn't get to write it down on time.  I think this would help me start my weight loss.  I need to lose about 35 lbs. I have hypothroidism and have a hard time losing weight. Maybe this would help me.  I am 65 years old so it is much harder for me to lose the added pounds.
Shelly, you look GREAT!!! I need to lose alot of weight. I have tried the Protein diet and lost 20 lbs but it seems like something happens to make me not care anymore and I go back to not eating right. How do you keep lifes ups and downs from making you give up? I will be 43 years old in a few weeks and I just get tired of fighting it...since I've had to fight it all my life..Can you help?
Wow, you go girl! You look so amazing and you are going to motivate and inspire so many people. I know it wasn't easy to finally decide to make the lifestyle changes needed to become healthier...but you did it!  You proved that it can be done with hard work, willpower and perseverance!  Thank you so much for sharing your story.
Well first of all congrats on your weight loss!!! I've been struggling with weight since I was a teen and your story has encouraged me to make a change. Thanks for sharing your story!
Shelley your so inspiring. I am 46 and and need to lose about 90 pounds. I have 5 grand babies and want to be around to see them all grow up. Todays the day I start to live a healthy life. Thanks to you. If any of you who wrote in would like to e-mail each other for support, I'm willing to help and will need help too. Writing are feelings out is a good way to realize different thing about ourselves. Maybe NBC can help us to stay in touch.
Wow Shelley you look beautiful. My name is also Shelley and I need to lose about 100 lbs. I just can't get started, the motivation isn't there. I've had a lot of very bad things happen to me in the last 2 years and I don't care about anything anymore, not even me. Sometimes I just want to die. Like you, I use food for comfort. Do you have any words to help me find the motivation and care for myself again?
Shelly, I'm so happy for you! Thank you for the inspiration.  I actually lost my job after 14 years of military service because I just couldn't seem to lose 75 lbs I put on after a car accident stopped me from working out. You have inspired me to keep trying and not to give up.  Thank you!
It would be interesting to hear more about the therapy for binge eating. What are the tools one uses to stop these binges and are there therapist that specialize in this area?
Hello Shelley,
I saw your story this morning - very inspirational! What you have done is quite an accomplishment! I have never really struggled with weight, but I gained over 60 pounds when I was pregnant and then lost it.  I too suffer the sagging skin after the weight loss. I recently found Teresa Tapp (t-tapp.com) and there is a skin tightening system in there that might help you. I just started using it, so I might not be the best one to ask about if it would work for you or not, but email Teresa or an Instructor and see if it would help. Good luck and I wish you well!
Thank you for sharing your story Shelly. I saw you on the news this morning was very inspired by your story.  I am a mother of a 4 yr old.  In 6 yrs, I have gained 40 pds.  I am so discouraged. It is hard for me to count calories.  I am interested in doing the Slim Fast Diet, too.  Did you add anything to your shakes, like adding any fruit.  I use whey protein in a shake with fruit, icecream, and milk. I do walk 3 days a week for about 15-20 minutes.  I have back problems, so I can't do much more than walking.  I would appreciate any advice you can give me.Thanks for your answers.

I lost 35 pounds in about 6 months, by writing down what I eat and aiming to stay at 2000 calories each day.  Some days I go over, some under, but overall I meet my daily goal.  This calorie limit helps to force healthier food choices.  Exercise also helps.  I walk, use weights or do yoga 5 to 6 times each week.
I think it is super that you have lost so much weight it takes a lot of willpower to keep going I have gained forty pounds over the years and now I am still struggling it is great you are able to inspire all the overweight americans it is so very important to stay fit , I bet your family is very proud of you, thank you now I will keep trying good luck to you...
You look fabulous! What an inspirational story.  Thanks for sharing.
I am beginning my journey.  I have quit smoking and have not had a cigarette for six weeks.  That was the easy part.  I wanted to do that first so that I could breathe when I tried to start walking.  I weigh over three hundred pounds and I will have my congrats day next year. Great job and thanks for the inspiration.
Great job! wonderful story to read.  One question, one of the people who responded said she did the Provida diet?? I've never heard of it.  What is it?
While I veyr much admire your weight loss, it would be best to be even more concerned with the actual loss of body FAT as opposed to just weight in general, as you can be what we call a "fat skinny" person.  And, unfortunately, if you were to read the actual labeling of Slim-Fast, it is indeed junk food; so, nutritionally speaking, you're just putting more junk food into your body and spending lots of money in the process.
Dear Shelley, I am amazed with you! I saw you on the internet and I was like "What the heck? If she can do it why can't I?" Please I need your help I weigh 346 lbs, and am a single mom of 2 little boys. I was given a sentence from a surgeon of 10 year lifespan if I don't lose weight. I need help. I need a friend that will help me do this. My family tries, but it always turns out more negative than positive. PLEASE HELP ME STAY ALIVE FOR MY KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow.  What an inspiration.  I keep gaining weight and now I am well over 100 pounds overweight; I assumed I could never be thin.  I kept telling everybody I have too far to go so why bother trying, I go to fast food places pretty much every day, but if Shelley did it, one step at at a time, then I should try it.  She is beautiful!!!  THANK YOU, Shelley, for sharing your story.  You are an amazing woman!  So many of us struggle in the same ways you used to struggle and you are motivating us to not give up.
my boyfriend just told me about your story and I was amazed. We are both really overweight. He is really making me nervous because he has a hard time breathing. I am very tall and although it is no excuse, I have an easier time hiding my weight compared to him. About seven years ago he lost about 250 lbs. and then he put it all back on prior to meeting me. We have been dating for 4 years now and eating out is our thing. It is sad that I can only think of one time when one of us cooked a meal! I think we are both ready to make a change. I would love to marry this man and be able to fit into a nice wedding dress. I really think we have to get serious about our health because we have been out of control for too long. It really has affected our sex life too. He is almost 400 lbs and I am 240.... You inspired us to get to the root of our problem and really get healthy. I have the slim fast in the fridge right now and I will start drinking in in the morning. Thank You!
You look amazing Shelly! You did what thousands of women need and want to do. You have realized your dream. I struggle with 50 lbs and it's ridiculous how I allow myself to make excuses or turn a blind eye in the moment. You have inspired me to take a stand on my health and create and realize my dream. Rock on. MCculloch
This is so awesome I am overflowed with joy for your success. You have been able to endure and concur a victory. Just about every woman who is struggling at this point with weight loss including myself want to get that victory and inspiration. I pray that all who are having a hard time continue to hang in there because nothing beats a failure but a try and we WILL DEFEAT THIS
IT was really amazing to see you like this shelly.

Shelley,
Congratualation on your weight loss.
I'm having trouble lossing weight. I need to lose 100 pounds. I'm not doing very good.
To Tammy King, Roseville, MI. I sure would like to work with you on supporting each other. Please liet me know. You could have my e-mail.
WOW...you have done a fantastic thing.  During your weight loss did your loss stall no matter what you did?  I have lost 75 lbs now and have been stalled for about 8 weeks despite adding excercise and not changing anything about the diet.  I still have about 90 to go.  It is really frustraiting!
Shelley, thanks for the inspiration.  I have recently joined a club and go 3-4 times a week.  I have a grip on healthy eating but still struggle with portion control.  Your story motivates.  You look great and you gotta be feelin' great.  Keep up the good work.
girllll you look amazing.
Tia, if you are a reader there are some great books out there about binge eating.  The one that changed my life was Debbie Donowski's "Why Can't I Stop Eating?"  This is a great book about food addiction.  I recognized myself in this book and was finally able to understand the binge eating process.  It may be helpful to you in breaking the cycle of binge eating.  I hope that you are helped by it as much as I was, if you choose to read it.
I'm curious about all the extra skin? What happened to that? Did you have to have surgery?
Congratulations on your success!  You are truly an inspiration for others struggling to get healthy. I watched the video clip from the Today Show and then read your story and I was very moved by your determination.  I too struggle with my weight, which is very frustrating for me because I am very successful in all other aspects of my life, but cannot seem to control my weight. I constantly beat myself up about this.  After reading your story, I realize that I do have the internal strength to do as you did.  Thank you so much for sharing your journey and allowing others to gain strength from your words.
Shelley, you are an inspiration. I am struggling with my weight and can't even get up from a sitting position without assistant. I had gallbladder surgery and thought with the change of eating habits I would lose weight. I have actually gain another 30 pounds since the surgery and I'm very depressed. I have a special needs daughter so I have to keep going and its so hard and I don't want to do another surgery so you are an inspiration that you can lose weight without the surgery. Thanks.
Still speechless after watching your video on the web...What a change, well done....
Way to go Shelley!  You always were a beauty...and now you're a super model!  You're an inspiration to all of us.

Shelley, great job, I love the fact that you didn't spend gigantic amounts of money on exercise garbage and nutrionist, chefs etc. that most "normal" people can't afford.  What it all boils down to is loving yourself more than you love the food.  I wish I could remember that more often,  Thanks
Go Girl!! You look fantastic!!

Shelly,
congrats, I also want to tell you what everyones its telling you.YOU LOOKD OWESOME. I'm struggling to lose 30 that i gained under a year ago, you are an inspiration.
Shelley, You truly are an inspiration.  You had all the determination needed to lose the weight and to keep it off! At times it was a struggle, but you did it! Congrats on everything girl!!
