The Afterlife For Lost Luggage

Posted: Tuesday, October 30, 2007 10:08 AM by Dan Fleschner

(From Janet Shamlian, NBC News Correspondent)

It's not easy to get there, but it's worth the trip. If you've ever lost your luggage permanently, the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama could be its final resting place.  Producer Jen Gentile and I checked it out for a story airing on TODAY this morning. WATCH VIDEO

I wasn't sure what to expect; would this be a warehouse of half-used tubes of toothpaste or a Mecca of new designer dresses?  Truth be told, it's a mix -- with plenty of treasures at bargain prices for anyone willing to give a few hours to the hunt.

With rows of iPods and stacks of those pricey noise-canceling headphones, the store fills a city block. From outerwear to underwear, there are racks of clothes alongside merchandise you'd never expect to find in checked luggage... including swords and surfboards. How do you lose a surfboard?  I was sad to see such an extensive collection of wedding dresses and hoped the brides had lost them AFTER the ceremony.

How does it all end up here?  While most lost luggage is eventually returned to its owners, thousands of bags never make it home. After 90 days, many airlines sell the orphaned bags to the Unclaimed Baggage Center. Workers painstakingly sort through them, discarding about a third of the items (so no toothpaste) and giving another third to charity.  The rest is washed and prepped for the showroom floor, brought out at the rate of about 7,000 items each day.

How are the prices?  Low enough to make the store among the biggest tourist attractions in Alabama. Let's just say Jen's bag and mine were both heavier on the way home!

What were the names of the stores that the lady mentioned after the video piece.  She was talking to Jhoda, and I'm particulary interested in the hotel surplus item reseller and the place for the handbags.

She spoke so fast that I could not understand the sotres or webiste names for the vintage and handbags.
I live in Huntsville, AL not far from Scottsboro.  Unclaimed Baggage is hit or miss.  Sometimes you can find premier designer goods.  You really do have to search.  Often the store prices things higher than the same merchandise, new not used or preowned, can be found at sales. It is best to really know values of items.  Electronics are good values, though check that all is in working order.  Remember someone lost this or didn't go back to claim it at the airport.
I love Unclaimed Baggage!  I shop there every time I visit my parents in Decatur, AL. (about 3-4 times a year or more).  The one of a kinds are worth the trip!  I especially love the jewelry.  I have bought some of my most wonderful pieces there!  The handbags can be a great find too.  The best tip is to get there when the doors open and plan to be there all day.  Try to go back because they are always putting out new items.

I would like the website for the mirrors and throws and also the handbags. Thanks.
I'm so aggravated.  The segment kept saying people left their items so they were sold to Unclaimed Baggage.  That is not true. My luggage was lost by a major airline and I have tried to find/retrieve it since July.  I even called Unclaimed Luggage to try to buy my stuff back if came there. Unfortunately, they discard all personal items and sell the rest.  They do not even sell items on the website so that I can look for my lost items to buy them back. Signed, Still looking for lost luggage
You can type in hotel surplus in your search engine and there you will find everything.
I am surprised more people aren't mortified at this practice.  Instead it seems to be a snooze ya loose attitude.  I don't believe these items aren't being searched for by their owners.  People traveling are often gathering items to serve as a sentimental reminder or receive gifts from family.  At a minimum money should be directed to a good cause, like the environment we are polluting by our insatiable desire to jet set around the country and world.  What about offsetting the carbon emissions associated with air travel?  I wouldn't personally buy anything from a store like this, just like I would never buy a forclosed house so I could benefit from another's misfortune.  Am I insane?  This just doesn't seem right.
For those of you that haven't found the store yet, here is the address and other info.:

Hey, Being from Alabama and living all across this country, while working construction, it ain't hard to get there. Because it ain't hard to ask someone there. And it ain't hard for them to answer!
The one thing that still bothers me about this story... After having lost baggage twice now, note: I said lost not "forgot" it is disheartening to know someone is profiting from my loss... With such extravagant and odd items you would think a little more effort from the airlines could match up some of those "lost" items with the true owners.
