Ann Curry on her way to the South Pole

(From Ann Curry, TODAY Anchor)

The C-17 that will fly us to Antarctica is warming up, and as I write this our NBC news team is on the tarmac, feeling like we are about to jump into the unknown.

Producer Matt Carluccio says he's "psyched." Cameraman Mike Simon is pacing himself trying not to get "too excited."  Leave it to Bobby Lapp, our soundman to see the downside, "I'm too hot in all this gear."

We are sweating, wearing three layers, and heavy expedition rated snow boots and huge coats, what we need to survive on what the scientists call "The Ice."

Ninety percent of all the ice on the planet earth is in Antarctica.  It is the world's air conditioner, and if it stops working we are all in trouble.

Video: Ann Curry discusses her journey

Climbing aboard, we can see it's going to be a full flight.  Most of the best and the brightest scientific minds on climate change want to be in Antarctica now, as it offers a pristine place to get evidence, and November is the beginning of its spring season.  It's going to be cool to let America hear what they are discovering.

But what has Mike, Bobby, Matt and me feeling a bit giddy is our plan to see the South Pole, fly over Mt. Erebus, an active volcano, and hang out with penguins.

We're told tourists are not allowed where we are going, so we are going to try our best to show you what we experience, so you feel you are along with us.

So long as we come back with all our fingers and toes.

The doors to the C-17 are about to close.  I have a feeling Bobby will soon have no complaints about our gear.

Oh Ann you are such a lucky lady, I will love to be in your place.  Live it to the fullest
I'm excited to see Ann's adventure since our daughter Jena has been working winters in Antarctica for 7 years and loves it.  To actually see the places our daughter has been, and to hear Ann's reaction to it all, will be very interesting.
keep safe anne /have a nice trip/tell me all about it on the show .

                  your amigo
                     Old Nick
Good luck Ann and come home safe.
I think it's exciting and can't wait to hear your reports.
The only dissapointment is that you will not be part of  the annual  Halloween costume exhibition that the Today Show is famous for.
Why did they pick NOW to send you to the end of the earth????grrrrrrr.
Anyway, good luck, good luck..at least we still get to see you!
I am looking forward to seeing Ann Curry's pictures from the South Pole. My late husband was the glaciologist with the first Wintering Over Party 1957-58 at the South Pole Station. He donated his film to National Geographic. The expedition was featured in the National Geographic edition of April 1958. There aren't many left of the original 18 men that spent the first winter. Incidentally I met my husband in Christchurch on his way down to the Antarctic, but that's another story.
Ann, you are such an adventurer! Is there anything you wouldn't do? You are a joy to watch on these daring and off the beaten bath excursions.
Hi. My husband and myself are employeed here at McMurdo Station. We are excited you are coming to our town and hope you enjoy your visit. We watch you when we are at home. Safe Travels. Bob and Dana Morris
Ann, Thanks for the trip down memory lane at ChristChurch.  I on the Deep Freeze mission of 1976, Oct/Nov.  I was part of the airlift crew and was lucky enough to make 2 trips down to the ice.  I think your trip will be one you will always remember, I have.
Ann, what an exciting adventure.  I learned alot about Antartica that I didn't know before, just by reading these few paragraphs.  I didn't know November was the beginning of spring season, I didn't know Mt. Erebus is an active volcano, and I certainly didn't know tourists went there.  I think I will cancel my trip to Florida next month and go to Antartica instead!  I can't wait to see the live broadcast Nov.5.  PLEASE KEEP YOUR FINGERS AND TOES WARM, AND HAVE A SAVE TRIP!

It is truly an amazing place.  Enjoy every minute of the incredible scenery and people that work there.  I had the great opportunity to work in McMurdo for 3 summer seasons and will always keep the experience close to my heart.  Enjoy
Hi Ann, You Have such a soothing and calming personallity. It's a joy to watch you on the Today show. I didn't realize it takes that long to get to Antartica. Good luck.
C'mon, Ann - to me and your NBC "crew" are on another boondogggle that makes it look like NBC is one jump ahead of the rest -- but just what do you think you will be telling us that we don't already know from NOVA, the movies and specials we have seen - and seen some more.  Do you expect to get a different slant on it -- forget it.  I have been down many times and it has been all done by others and those who have the scientific expterise. . including all the slants on global warming. . truth and fiction.  How far does NBC go to get any sort of coverage anyhow?

I am absolutely THRILLED to follow this trip.  I have wanted to go to Antarctica since I was about 9.  I literally dream about it.  I WILL go one day..hopefully before it melts!
ann this is like a thrill seeking adventure.way to go lady i will  watch ever second cant wait to see more.
Ann, you are soooo fortunate to be going to the South Pole and I am glad tourists are not allowed on this pristine place on our Mother Earth.  Learn all you can and educate the rest of the world on the importance of saving the South Pole.
Ann,
Are you aware that the earth "wobbles" on it's axis? Can you do a segment on the wobble and let us know if you can feel it?  Have a great time.
hi ann,
you are the best personality on a great show. everybody on the show is great but you would be missed the most. have a great trip and i will be wathching for your report.
Ann, I'm so jealous!! I'm an animal control officer and penguins are one of my favorite animals. Have a safe and wounderful trip.
Hello Ann
I am looking forward to your reports on "The Ice".  We will be there in January so please throw a lot of info at us!
ANN,HAVE A GREAT TRIP. NOT MANY OUTSIDERS GET TO GO WHERE YOUARE GOING. I WAS THER OCT. 63 TO FEB.64 WITH USN MCB8. WE BUILT THE WATER DISTILLATION PLANT AND PIPE LINE. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY TOLD YOU BUT IT HAD OR HAS ONE OF THE FIRST NUCLEAR REACTORS FOR GENERATING ELECTRICITY. IF YOU GET A CHANCE GO TO HUT POINT YOU WILL BE AMAZED AT WHAT YOU SEE. GOOD LUCK.
Ann:  Why do the white penguins come toward you but the black penguins run away?
I am really looking forward to your report how lucky can you get I wish I can go there I am also looking forward to mondays segment "to the ends of the earth"
Admiral Richard Byrd's snow cruiser crashed on a bridge in Gomer, Ohio in 1939.   My parents made money parking cars and selling hot dogs to the thousands of people, who came to see the crash.   The snow cruiser was traveling from Chicago to Boston then on to the Antarctica.    When it got to Antarctica, it sank.   There is a replica of the snow cruiser with photos and articles in the Gomer Welsh Community Museum.    I thought it would be interesting to know where and how it sank and add this to the display in the museum.
Ms, Curry--You're a true professional.  I guess this surely breaks the routine of warm comfortable living with your daily show.  Have fun, enjoy it, give your us your reports, and save the videos and photos for your family and grandchildren of the future!  Return safely with the rest of the CREW!
Hi Ann. I lover all of you at NBC. I am so excited foryou and all the crew. Be safe and stay warm I know your family will miss you and wish they were there. God Bless and a safe journey. Kiss a penguin for me.
Hello Ann. Glad you had a safe trip to the ice. I knew you would as soon as I heard that you were on your way. My son, Lt. Col. Jim Mcgann who was ypour pilot on the way down  called me last night before they left there on their way back to Christchurch and told me that all had arrived safely and it was timne for him and the crew to return. Ann enjoy your trip and god speed to all your crew.
god bless you and the crew ann. be safe and take lots of penguin pictures. they are my favorite, have been for many years. maybe you can put some battery operated heating pads in your boots. i can't imagine the cold down there. this is truly a lifetime experience.
Hi Ann, You are very lucky to be headed WAY down under. I know the Air crew of that C-17 will get you there very safe. My brother, Lt. Col. Jim McGann is scheduled to pilot that flight and he and I'm sure the rest of his crew take great pride in thier duties. Best wishes, Brian McGann
Hello Ann

GO for it!!!
when is the telecast from Anarctica on tv for viewers to see?  (day, time, etc)
When is the Artic Circle on? When is the Equator on?  I haven't found this information. Please advise.
Good luck on your trip. One poster said "If it melts". Let them know if it is melting, it's out of our control and humans aren't going to destory the planet.

God's speed!
It has been a very long held dream and wish of mine to experience Antarctica.  All the information is so captivating.  Please return with a "some of the people that live there" story to share.  Such stories tingle the adventurous soul.  Have a great adventure!

Glad to know that you can almost spell, and that your pessimism is undaunted, could it be your a neocon, and the fact that global warming could be "a slant" for the story has you worried?  That you've been wrong all these years, and now, will be proved wrong on national tv?  Is it your political standpoint that makes you so  disagreeable?  If this is so, keep you hate speech for someone who'll eat it up, mainly, the neocons, and the so called evangelical right. (grow up, and become real christians, instead of the pawns and puppets of big business that only have one thing on their minds, profit! (people like this, are what makes the world a less joyful place to live, to concerned with things that have little to do with governing, and more to do with religious fanaticism.)
Ann
I am excited to see the trip.  My late father was on the Byrd expedition to Antarctica for aerial mapping and the aircraft crashed. They were lost for 13 days. They were eventually found and had to walk to where they could be rescued. Some of them never made it back.
Ann,

Best of luck with the trip!  You're one of my favorite people on NBC!  I hope to be able to watch it all!  Such an amazing trip!

Take Care, God Bless and hurry back to NBC...

Ann

I was in the Navy from 81-85 flying people all around Antarctica. It is truly a magnificent place, and we must preserve it as best as humanly posibble
Ann, I love watching you on the Today Show. You are
such a beautiful and adventurous woman. Best of luck
in Antartica and have a safe trip home.
Ann, I know you are probably scared to death but you will do fine. The best of luck to you and you crew. We all are watching and stay warm.:)
Dear Ann, I love watching you on the Today show and can't wait to follow your trip to Antartica. Be safe and warm! Have fun.
Hi Ann!  My friend and husband work at the Pole every Oct-Feb working on a very interesting project called Ice Cube. They drill a hole 1 1/2 miles deep, with hot water, then they drop a probe into the hole which then freezes over. When nutrinos pass thru the ice (smaller than atoms) they make a blue flash which the probe picks up and they can map where in the universe it came from. My friend Dennis Duling is there , he also left Monday for the Ice. My husband will be leaving CHC Friday and will be on the ice Sat.or Sun. I'm looking forward to your show, maybe I'll see some of the places my husband has told me about. Stay warm.  YOUR THE BEST!   PATTY MATT
Ann,
I know you will enjoy every moment.  You are now a member of a very rare group of humans.  I worked for the University of Alaska Fairbanks for over 15 years and they send students every year.  It is the chance of a lifetime for them.  The two women I know who went had life changing experiences.  One was proposed to on her second trip at Mac Murdo (sp)!  We will enjoy seeing through your eyes.  Christie Thomas
Hi Ann - My husband and I and the rest of our family are looking forward to seeing you on the "Ice".  Our daughter, Kate Koons and her husband, Kevin Emery are working there- He's the head of Search and Rescue and she's part of the support team.  They just got married in June - how's that for a newlywed adventure.
ENJOY!!
Ann, What a great assignment! Stay warm and safe. I'm looking forward to your reports and learning more about that continent.
Dear Ann
I hope your trip is a great one. Our son is on his way there. He will be building the new buildings going up at the South Pole Station. They have a big crew going there. He will be there for 3 or 4 months. Maybe if your still there you could stop by and see them. Take care and stay warm.
Hey Ann,
I'm glad you're taking your biggest adventure yet. Probably when (and hopefully when) you read this you already completed the journey. You are just the right person for the job. I'm excited to see you on ice!
Ann,

Travel safe and good luck;I look forward to the broadcast next week. Stay warm!!
Ann, our whole family is anxious to see your adventure! Remember dry socks are lifesavers!! Have fun and be safe!
Ann,
I'm just jealous casue you get to go somewhere cold. I'm in Baghdad. Have fun.
This is so wonderful! Best of luck!  My 70 yr old mother and sister leave in about two weeks to visit Antartica so this will give them a wonderful insight into what to expect! It has been my mother's lifelong dream to go to Antartica and now she is going to live that dream!!!
