Valerie Plame Wilson: 'You can't make up some of the stuff I've seen'

Posted: Monday, October 22, 2007 9:40 AM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Elliott Walker, TODAY Producer)

CIA veteran Valerie Plame Wilson was never supposed to be famous. For 20 years it came naturally to her to lie to her friends and family about being a spy. (She says none of them were mad at her when they found out.) She used false passports and work names and disguises. WATCH VIDEO

She was the best shot with an AK-47 in her mostly-male CIA training class.

She was good enough that, with infant girl-boy twins at home, she went back to work at the CIA, less than full time, and was chosen to be Director of Operations for the Joint Task Force on Iraq. When Condoleeza Rice told the country we didn't want the "smoking gun" in Iraq to be a "mushroom cloud," it was Valerie Wilson's job to mount the operations that would discover if Saddam actually did have nuclear weapons. And from time to time, she did it with two toddlers playing under the desk.

She thinks being female and blonde may have made her more effective on operations, because who expects a spy to look like that? (Obviously not her boss on her first foreign assignment, who made her come into his office, instructed her to turn around, and announced, "Great, great. You'll do fine here.")

She doesn't read spy novels and laughs at shows like "ALIAS" (about a beautiful young female spy) because, as she puts it, "real life is so much better."

But when her husband angered the Bush administration by criticizing the war in Iraq, and she was "outed," it was tough. Wilson writes that the stress she and her husband faced almost ended their marriage. They were financially devastated when his consulting business dried up.

And scary things began to happen - scarier than being called names in the paper. She worried that al Qaeda might target her family. She got death threats and crank calls. She gives no details, but her former colleague, Larry Johnson, writes on his blog, NoQuarterUSA  "in 2004 the FBI received intelligence that Al Qaeda hit teams were enroute to the United States to kill Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, and Valerie Plame."

Wilson knew about the threat. Yet the CIA turned down her request for security for her children. She taught her nanny counter-surveillance techniques herself.

In her book, "FAIR GAME: MY LIFE AS A SPY, MY BETRAYAL BY THE WHITE HOUSE" (Read a Book Excerpt here) she also recounts being audited by the IRS in 2005 for the first time in her life, and the mysterious but alarming discovery that the structural bolts that had connected her elevated deck to the back of her house were all missing, one year after it was completely renovated.

She also believes the CIA went after her book more aggressively than the books of other ex-spies. Roughly 10% of it is "redacted" - here on page 50 and 51, all you can see are the periods. We'll probably never know what she wanted to tell us on that page, or many more.

That's not all we don't know. Valerie Wilson and her husband are still in civil court, suing Vice President Cheney, his Chief of Staff Scooter Libby, Karl Rove, and others, because the one mystery this spy never unraveled is ... who started it all? Someone knew her secret and told others, who told reporters, who told the world. Now the woman whose career was ended when she was "outed" now wants that someone "outed" as well.

Yawn,  Valery who?  You mean the one that had no problem lying to friends and family and told Katie Couric she was now partisan???
So she got used to lying early and often in her professional life.  I'm not suprised.
She has no credibility whatsoever, looks like she is just trying to push her book.I personally don't believe a word she says.
What they did to Valerie Plame is nothing short of espionage! I have always stated to friends about this case the fact that hundreds more agents were outed as the white house outed this agent.
The president states that "he will not stand for this type of behavior"; then he pardons Libby immediately after sentencing.
This has only proven Bush's personal involvement in the whole thing!
Halliburton has enjoyed years of tax exemptions; now at a time when congress was going to tax Halliburton was about to be taxed, they conveniently move operations out of the United States for good. They now are developing their own country; "Halliburtonca" possibly. We know where we can find Bush and Cheney once they leave the white house; they will be on "Halliburtonca" at their own private resort enjoying cocktails with their friends and coincidentally the recipients of multiple Hundreds of Billions of American dollars!!!!
I voted for Ronald Reagan; I would never vote for George Bush. But that doesn't matter either because with friends such as Dibold voting machine programmers who personally wrote Bush a letter stating "don't worry we will pull Ohio for you". Diabold was found guilty in civil court of this behavior.
The power of this Bush/ Cheney regime is deplorable as they will rot in hell for their evil selfish ways.
I hope there are those out there who will always pursue justice against this Bush/Cheney regime!!!!!
Good luck Valerie and may God Bless you!!!
You said on your show that no one has been charged with leaking her name.  Thats true but you make it sound like no one knows who did leak it.
Why not mention his name.  A clue,  It wasn't Rove.
Lets hear the other side.  Have as your guest Robert Novak and we would get closer to the truth than what we heard today.
Wow, another piece on Plame by the press without mentioning Armitage....hmm...why is that?
I bought the book and will read it. I noticed how so many lines are blacked out, shame on whomever did this as I really wanted to read the real story. I have so much anger towards the current government that her story will not make me less or more angry. My anger already reached the max, but I can't do anything at all. I am just a small ant to the US government. The only thing I can say is that when I was young I used to live in a communist country and now living in US really reminds me of the years I lived under the communist regime.
The ENTIRE Bush Administration is a bunch of white color criminals and worse, run by The-Idiot-Who-Stole-the-Presidency, George W.! No one should be surprised in the least that they outed Valerie to retaliate against her husband. Look at everything they have done in the past 8 years! And that is only the stuff we KNOW about!! We are living in the scariest times this country has ever seen and its all thanks to that bumbling monster (and his horrific staff) we have sitting in the White House. Fact is not only stranger than fiction, it's scarier because it is real! I've never looked so forward to a presidential election in my whole life.
not a covert spy.  she drove to cia headquaters and reported to work where all could see her.  she and her husband are demacratic hacks and the leaker was richard armitage not libby or rove.  her husband lied that is documented and bush got angry and said lets put the whole story out their.
I quite frankly don't believe Valerie Wilson's telling the whole truth. It's just a hunch, but she has given me the impression that she knew her time in the spotlight would be short, and that she needed to get it while she could. Her expose on the front cover of Esquire illustrates this as well as anything. No real American "spy" in his or her right mind would be so inclined to identify and expose herself to such danger. I guess it was the sunglasses that convinced me she was out for the publicity. Anyway, I would think that such admissions would be securred with some kind of oath to silence by the CIA. Is she the real traitor? Robert Novak sure seems convinced of her misinterpretation of her past government responsibilities. I'd bet my last dollar that she'd refuse to meet and discuss on the same stage.
Who should we believe, Bush or Valerie?  Bush has a track record of NEVER telling the truth.  He has always put politics above everything.  His buddy, Karl Rove wrote the book on dirty tricks.  Bush, Rove and Cheney should be tried for treason.
