On the Road with Matt and Dan: Day 1

Posted: Sunday, October 14, 2007 11:50 PM by Dan Fleschner

I'm writing this at 10:51 p.m. Central Time on Sunday night. It's been an interesting day.

I can't say that I've ever flown from New York to Boise to Chicago in one day, but that's what Matt and I did today.

The day began at 7:15 a.m., when a car arrived to pick me up at my apartment. We then drove over to Matt's apartment and were off to the airport by 7:30. Why were we going to Boise? Because Matt was going to interview Senator Larry Craig and his wife at their home in Boise, Idaho.

The interview got underway around 3 p.m. Mountain Time, and it was pretty compelling stuff. I watched the interview on a monitor in the Craigs' garage along with, among others, Senator Craig's attorney, Billy Martin (he also represents Michael Vick, among others).

You, of course, can see Matt's interview with the Craigs Tuesday at 8 p.m. on NBC in a special primetime edition of Matt Lauer Reports. And we'll have more coverage Wednesday morning on TODAY as well. I'm too tired right now to get into the details of the interview, but you should watch. Just trust me.

One of the highlights for me happened after the interview was over. Matt proved, once again, that he's a celebrity wherever he goes, even within our business.

A reporter from the local NBC affiliate in Boise spoke to him on camera for about five minutes, asking him about his interview with the Craigs and his experience seeing Idaho (he had been there before, on fly-fishing trips, but had never been to Boise -- and we were there for such a short period of time, I don't think either of us got a real sense of the city).

After that was all finished, we hopped back in the car with booking producer Matt Zimmerman and audio guru Mike Noseworthy, headed back to the airport and flew to Chicago.

As you may have already seen, Matt is doing the show from here Monday morning, and he's got some interesting interviews lined up -- including Sir Richard Branson, Judge Joan Lefkow (who is speaking on television for the first time since her husband and mother were murdered in 2005), and Erik Prince, the CEO and co-founder of Blackwater USA.

It's been a long, long day. And my wake-up call is coming in 4 1/2 hours, so there's little rest for the weary. But rest assured, I'll have more tales from the road tomorrow...

The Craig thing is funny.  It just show how ridiculously out-of-touch those in the upper eschelon of society are.  I'm sure we would all like to go back and get our "mistakes" removed from our criminal records.  Then to keep acting like it didn;t happen is actually quite pathetic.  I guess people NEVEr learn.....don't cover up scandals...just admit the truth....Those sleepless night must be tough, Mr. Craig.
What a compelling read. America needs more heroic interviews of conservative politicians engaged in sex scandals, so that we can try to understand the "human side" behind the vital events in our world. I hope there was an intrepid assistant nearby to document the grueling process of blogging this.
Al and Matt
You are missing the boat this year with the Halloween Costumes and tying in to your trip to Chicago, if you do not dress as Hillary and Barrack.  I think it would be a hoot and only you two could pull it off!!
We do appreciate you all comming to Illinois and wish that you would come to more than Chicago.  I have been able to do some foreign travel and all they know when we say Illinois, is Chicago.  I wish that more of our glorious state were as well known.
This is a shame to a LOT of people in Idaho.  Many of us are NOT mormons - that is what Romney is also - thus the back stabbing between the two.  It is EMBARRASSING that craig would let his state become such a laughing stock of America due to his selfish ways.  Yes, he probably has done SOME things for the State, but his MOST remembered will be done in Minneapolis. He should be put into the 'Hall of Shame'.
"Matt proved, once again, that he's a celebrity wherever he goes, even within our business."

So are you and Matt in the Celebrity Business? or the News Business? And how, exactly, do you distinguish between the two? Which is more important?
My name is Kate Morris.  I'm the blonde producer in the above photo.  Matt Lauer and the Today show are rather popular in Boise, Idaho, with some of the best ratings in the nation.

Just so everyone knows we actually got a great sound bite from Matt that aired this evening at five o'clock - after a piece about the amazing Boise State victory the night before that will now be replayed on ESPN.  Matt obviously missed the greatest game ever played on the blue turf, but he was able to see something spectacular as he flew into Boise:

The following is an expert of what Matt Lauer had to say to KTVB reporter Ysabel Bilbao:  "I had a dream come true, I actually flew over the blue field,  I flew over Boise State's football stadium when they were just about to have a game so instead of only seeing the blue turf on T.V. I've now seen it actually looking down at it."

Well Matt, you were obviously working and commuting yesterday but you’ve lucked out!  E-S-P-N has dubbed the game you flew over an instant classic, and will replay the historic match up Wednesday, October 16th at 8 P-M.

I also want to mention what was going on behind the lens of the above photograph; I looked to my right and was astonished to see what I would call a small crowd of on-lookers.  That crowd included Sen. Larry Craig staffers Dan Whiting and Sid Smith, attorney Billy Martin and as I am now aware NBC Producer Dan Fleschner.  It was a sight to see and I only wish now that I would have turned my lens on them!
I don,t appreciate NBC cluttering my viewing time with a special report on Larry Craig, Let congress and the courts handle this and don't  use my viewing time to listen to his whinings and denials
Come back to Idaho when you can stay longer and appreciate our great State.
If Larry Craig is such a "fighter", why did he knowingly plead guilty? It seems to me that he made an intelligent waiver of his right to trial..so why, when there is real news happening in the world would you give this hypocrite the time of day?
I lived in Idaho and remember the stinging comments Mr. Craig made of others who exhibited his same behavior. He had no sensitivity to their feelings, so why care about his?
Mr Craig should be ashamed of himself. How many other men walked into that bathroom that day and were not arrested? Why would you plea guilty to something if you are not? To spare his family he said well it has not worked out that way. Time will tell if he is gay or not and for my part who cares. Has anyone come forward to say they "know" him? If he has had sexual partners they will soon come out of the closet. I hate to say this but if looks tell all then he is not only quilty but gay! Remember the wife is usually the last to know. As far as Mitt is concerned maybe they had more in common than we know
A few follow up questions for Matt Lauer regarding his interview with Larry Craig, namely:
1.  How wide was Larry Craig's stance when they met and had their "sit down?"
2.  Did Craig tap his feet during the interview?
3.  Did Craig's foot touch Matt's foot during the interview?
Hmmmmm?
I'm really dissappointed that Matt is having a discussion with another "i'm not gay" or "I have never been gay" person, who has decided that for his own good and probably his family's to keep what is apparently a secret, not to mention keep his cushy job in the senate.  We are spending way too much time ridiculing people who are, or are not (?) gay.  This man got caught in a restroom with his pants down, and from what information is floating about the e-waves is not the first time that he has been doing this or has had other types of "gay incounters". President Clinton helped define what is sex and what is not, and Larry Craig obviously feels that what he is doing is not sex. What he did is wrong, but does the public need to have it thrown in their faces again and on national television?  Where is the governor, who came out on television about his being gay - did we rake him over the coals.  These people are dealing with a big issue in their personal lives about being gay, or in Larry Craig's life not chosing to define his sexuality.  There are more of us out there than you think, we just don't make a habit or a point of expressing our gayness in this way.
We in Idaho are very sick of hearing of Larry Craig's mess.  Most of us see him as a total fraud, and wish he would go away.  He keeps saying he will resign, but now he won't make a decision until the appeal is over well, that will take 6 months to a year.  I guess his term will be almost over then.  Idaho is a beautiful state, some weird politics, but nothing like Larry Craig.  Remember, "his" children are from his wife's first marriage, they are not biologically his.
I really love that in all the promos for this interview, show that all the family pictures have been turned to face the camera.  I wonder what other conditions were in place in order tho get the interview?
This is sick, and how sick is his wife she is sitting there like puppet saying what he wants her to say. We will see 2 years from now when he comes out that all is true. I just hate when they make judgements about groups of people and turns out they are very much aprt of that group.
What a waste of airtime! Mr. Craig doth protest too much!! Just resign and admit you prefer the same sex. I don't think anyone really cares, let your wife get on with her life and get out the the so called " news "
What I wanna know is this:
1) Why doesn't Sen. Craig come out (no pun intended) and  simply accuse this police officer of being a lying, unprofessional piece of dung who was most likely under pressure to produce results in this so called sting operation? Just lay it on the line, Senator. We do not need cops like this disgracing the badge!!!

Best regards
I hear from many a congressmen, "if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, then its a duck. Mr. Craig you are a closet gay. Shame on you for being such a hypocrite to your fellow gays.
A person that can lie without a conscience is a flawed person; in fact they are known as sociopaths; which is exactly what I believe Larry Craig to be.  Frances C. Brame, Charlotte, NC
I am normally not a "blogger" but I am so sick of the hypocrisy that I have to say something! I am a gay guy who has never looked for sex in a public bathroom and these references to well known signals to solicit sex in public bathrooms offend me! Larry Craig is a pathetic pig who can look in the eyes of his wife and the rest of the world and lie! Personally, I don’t care who he sleeps with but don’t include him in the so-called gay community.
I take offense to most of Matt Lauer's usage and choice of words during his entire interview. Us gay folks don't have a secret handshake or foot-taping process to get sex, we go to bars just like everyone else. The codes outlined in this report have nothing to do with the "gay community", they are part of an anonymous sex world we as an entire population of gays do not all know.  I know I didn't, my boyfiend didn't either.  I found Matt's overreach here amazingly destructive and demeaning to the respect of my rights to live and work in the United States as a gay man.

Maybe if the general public was just more accepting of the gay community and their right less men would feel the need to be closeted and have anonyomous sex.

Some men independent of thier sexuality will be "cruising" for sex.  Apparently they don't care who they are having sex with. Men are pigs all of them, not just the terrible gays.  By the way, I am sure Matt is quite familiar with the term cruising as it would be hard not to living in NYC.  It could be that all of his money has him so sheltered at this point that he is no longer in touch with the public.

On a funny note: The real question to me is why is Matt so interested, maybe he and Larry should get together.  I think they would make a FABULOUS gay power couple.  If Anderson Cooper doesn't get to him first.
I appologize for the rude frankness of this question, but if Senator Craig entered a stall to take care of personal buisnes, Did he actually do that. Did he actually use the bathroom, did he flush the toilet before he came out, did he feel the need to wash his hands before going with the officer. Usually when you start that process, you are commeted to that and that alone, and have no time to pick up paper, put your hand under the divider or hold a converstion with the person in the next stall.
If he is innocent, that is his only defense, he would have been too busy to be trapped.
Craig is so full of crap, this man is GAy BI what ever, He new you could pick up a  man here at the airport, it is on the net some where that you go  there and tap feet. To get some good time.... I watched the story tonight and my GAY DARRRRR goes off with this man, He is hidding his real life....
sen. craig  you  are  not  beening   nice  gays  and rest  of  us  ether  and  we  as  gays  and rest  are  not  happy  that  all  with   you  for  putting  down   gays  and rest  of us  ether   you  leave   offices  or  get   big  law  shiut  from  gays  and rest of us  of  9.9  billon  dollars   you  get  it
In the interview with Mr. Lauer and Senator Craig, its so obvious that Senator Craig is lying. Its in his body language and his eyes. I work for a man who is a closet gay and his family has no idea. I know this because I have caught him looking at gay porn on my computer. He's done this on several of his employee's computers, obviously, so no tracks are left on his computer. We have also found gay porn stashed away in secret places around the office. This is done to keep his wife from finding out. He also lies about everything in order to make his life look perfect to everyone. He would rather die than confess to being bisexual or gay. They marry women who are very gullable which Mrs. Craig seems to be. You can go to a porn video store and see many men who look just like Craig going in the gay section all day. They have the look of business men and preachers and there's many of them. He also talks bad about gays and disapproves their lifestyle much like Craig. Yep, he's guilty. Its written all over his face.
How ridiculous the majority of these comments are. I am not a fan of Mr. Craig but let's look at this in another way;
Since when is it unlawful to tap your feet in a bathroom? Since when is it unlawful to place any part of yur hand below the confines of a restroom stall? This whole thing is ridiculous. Most of the comments made here are by people who have never met Senator Craig. Assuming that this man is gay is more than ridiculous.
In addition if a straight policeman walked to any restroom USA and observed a male/female couple fondling one another would this be a news worthy story? Would they be arrested? I think not! Instead I believe it would be the topic of the squad room and laughed and joked about for days to follow.

Once again our nations police force proves that the laws in place to govern EVERYONE have a different meaning when it involves homosexuals. I do not condone sex in any public restroom be it male/male or male/female but this is a pure case of entrapment!

Nuff Said!
This is to Matt Lawer:
I am very disappointed with your interview with Craig! You let him off the hook with many of the tough questions. I am an attorney. I also happen to be gay. I, nor any of my gay friends, know about any "gay signals" in a public bathroom.  Matt's descripition of what "gay" people do in bathrooms as signals is offensive and innacurate.  It continues the perpetration of gay people as deviant.  Truth is, the deviance would be the supposedly straight men who melign the good name of respectable gay people with their selfish, self hatred, attempts to satisfy a sexual urge in a public bathroom.  Stop demeaning respectable gay people by associating them with people like Craig.  Matt, either you let Craig off easy in a poor interview or your station did not show the hard hitting questions...both options are shameful.  NO ONE touches another's foot under a stall in a bathroom. As a man, you and I know that it just does not happen.  NO ONE picks up a piece of paper from a bathroom floor while sitting on a toilet stool! It just does not happen.  NO ONE looks into a bathroom stall through the opening in the slot. It just doesn't happen.  And if possible, NO ONE sits next to someone else in a public stall if they have to deficate unless it is an emergency and absolutely unavoidable.  Anyone who believes Craig's story, including his wife, is so far in denial, or wants to preserve the status quo, that it is a sad portrayal of American society.  But be clear, none of Craig's actions should be associated with the "gay community."  Matt, please do a story to correct your slander of my community.  I would be happy to provide you with information and statistics to correct your negative portrayal of the gay community.  You should be ashamed of your soft ball journalistic story and your cavalier usage of what is  characteristic of the gay community.  You have done more harm than good while letting a idiot off the hook.
Regardless of what happened - what really did Craig do that was worthy of arrest?

- Tap his foot?
- A hand under the stall?

Next time you're out and see a sexy member of the opposite sex - don't flash a smile - or wink - you may be arrested for solicitation!  What a crock.  I think the senator is 'guilty' of what he did - but what he did wasn't illegal!
Matt Lauer and NBC blew it!  Matt should have interviewed the arresting Sargent and the Sargent's three arests before Mr. Craig.  Mr. Craig accused the Sargent of profiling.  Did the arresting Sargent truley profile?  What would the Sargent's prior three arrests, from this Minneapolis sting, say?  Its too late now, but I would trust the police before I would trust a politician!
I think Larry Craig was framed by a police officer who needed to make his quota. Police officers can arrest innocent people anytime they want and if they dare to argue, they are resisting arrest! It's very frightening to see how power can, and is, abused every day and the regular, innocent, everyday citizens have no recourse except to use up their precious savings to hire an attorney to get themselves cleared.
Wow, great interview you all. You can really see that the guy is a total fake. Great close ups on face. It's so easy to see that craig is lying through his smirk! Am I the only one that could see that?? Great job too Matt and crew! His dislike for gays is so obvious! Classic case here!
Thank you Matt for finally asking the questions about Craig that I've had for months...."is he bi," "why didn't he seem surprised/shocked when he saw a badge," etc.  He didn't react as most of us would in similar circumstances and that rings extremely guilty.  When interviewed by Mark Johnson he said that the reason he didn't leave the senate was because he "didn't take the easy way out," "It's not my way."  Then he turned around and told Matt the reason he pleaded guilty to the charges in MN is because at the time it "seemed the easy way out."  He said he does not walk away from a fight but that's exactly what he did in MN.  Which one is it Larry?  The people of Idaho are tired of the lies and extremely tired of YOU.  Stop our embarrassment AND your own.

Trust, but Verify
Idaho Senator Larry Craig, please, just go away!
Now he’s with Matt Lauer, NBC Today
The guilty fine he will not pay
And, oh, yes, he is NOT gay
It was a “tough call”
What? Choosing the right Men’s Room stall?
I am a “Family Values” Ronald Reagan man
Larry, “Trust, but verify” who’s in the next can!
“It’s my right to do what I’m doing”
Usually, Senator, it’s the public you’re screwing
Sex sting guilty plea to appeal
Is this guy for real?
Senate Liaison for candidate Romney
“Larry” said Mitt, “have to set you free”
Not only overboard, but “under the Campaign Bus”
Reticent at first, now, quite a fuss
“He backed up and ran over me, again and again!”
Wasn’t that, sort of, the Men’s Room ‘Original Sin?’

larry reminds me of my denining ex. wife. not until she is headed to jail for domestice violence, lose custody of our two young boys does she tell me the truth. she is not happy but bisexual she is. oh this is a big secret to all else in idaho. i still love the truth because in idaho we can still be who we really are.

ALTHOUGH I COME FROM A LONG LINE OF LIBERALS, I MUST ADMIT THAT SENATOR CRAIG MIGHT BE INNOCENT. I THINK THAT IF LARRY CRAIG WAS AN EXPERIENCED RESTROOM-PLAYER, MEN HE HAD ENCOUNTERED IN THE PAST WOULD HAVE STEPPED FORWARD TO CASH ON THE SENATOR'S MISFORTUNE. CRAIG APPEARED TO KNOW THE RIGHT GESTURES, JUST LIKE A PITCHER RESPONDS TO THE CATCHER. IT TAKES EXPERIENCE AND SEVERAL BALL GAMES TO FIGURE OUT WHAT'S GOING ON. THERE IS NO PROOF THAT CRAIG HAS DONE THIS BEFORE. THIS IS WHY I THINK THE SENATOR MADE  CRITICAL ACCIDENTAL MOVEMENTS. PLUS, US LIBERALS, WE LIKE THE GAYS!
Thank You Matt for a great interview. You asked him all the necessary questions and you could clearly see, even though he was trying so hard to stay calm and keep his facial expression normal, it was so obvious he was hiding the truth! just count all the times that he said, that was a mistake!! mistake for being cought I guess and also the feeling of shame, if you haven't done anything wrong why would you feel shame anyway!! specially since you are a fighter!
Again thank you Matt, it was a great interview!
I watched both the local interview and Matt's interview tonight, I live in Idaho, and was born and raised here. Beyond the embarrassment that he has brought to the State of Idaho, I am dumbfounded at his level of arrogance and his pompous attitude.

Listening to excerpts of the tape tonight on these shows I found a few items of interest.

One of the first exchanges Sen. Craig states, "You solicited me!" I find this very odd, since he claims to have no knowledge of the meanings behind the signals he demonstrated- but he knew enough that he felt as if were the one that was solicited?

Next, he ansewered Matt about pleading guilty and paying a fine because he, "wanted it to go away."  Yet he prides himself on being a fighter and not taking the easy way out by resigning.  He contradicts himself in these interviews. He plead guilty in order to pay a fine for the sole purpose of "taking the easy way out."  He has lost all credibility and is digging the hole even deeper for himself.

I speak as an Idahoan, Senator Craig- you have done enough- it is time for you to resign.  Handle this mess you have gotten yourself into on your own time, not the Idaho taxpayers time and money.
I watched the interview with Matt Lauer and Sen.Craig tonight and I have to admit I formed a strong opinion regarding Craig's character.  And in all fairness, who really cares what my opinion or your opinion is, because it's simply that...an Opinion.  I personally do not care what sexual orientation a person chooses.  And really it's nobody's business to pass judgement.  I think the real issue at hand with Craig is his integrity, credibility and character.  Craig states that he is a fighter and never walks away from a fight, and in this case until his "name" is cleared.  As of right now, it seems that a lot of public "opinion" has been created.  So here is my solution.  Lie Detector Test!!!!!!
What i would like to know is why did Matt Lauer traveled all the way to Boise Idaho to devote an entire 10 minutes of the Today Show to an interview with Senator Larry Craig about this issue, which at most, is a violation of Senator Craig's civil rights, when a few minutes later less than 10 seconds was given to a Real story:  the fact that 43% of the continental U.S. is in a severe drought.  Why are we not calling in experts and analysts to discuss This?   I'm sure that Tim Russert and Dan Abrams might not get as excited about discussing this story, but it certainly is going to have a greater impact on American families and families around the world than whether or not a man tried to solicit sex in a public bathroom.
Larry Craig & his wife sat there smirking during the interview acting all innocent. He's an educated person, yet he's tries to act naive by not knowing what inappropriate behavior is. There is a saying that says, If it walks & talks like a duck it must be a duck.
Geez, get over it already.  I am sick of having to look at, listen to this guy and his bathroom habits.  Stop already.  How many more days of this junk do we have to mute before you stop harping on this?
I would really appreciate Matt to stop stating in his interview and comments regarding this Craig matter the words "members of the gay community that solicit sex in public places", most men that solicit sex in bathrooms are married so called  hetrosexual men, download or closeted men and are not at all members or take part of the "gay community". Are your Predators in Dateline with minors caught on tape called from a "Hetrosexual community". Matt should apologize to the gay community, this is an insult to us.
Why is it illegal to flirt with someone for sex if you are a homosexual? Should we then go into all the bars and other places and arrest all hetrosexual people for soliciting sex from the opposite sex?
Enough is enough! How sad Matt, you have devoted so much time to interviewing Senator Larry Craig. Doesn't America have more important issues that could merit an hour of TV time? Plus every news show. Like Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson reporting there will be 1,000,000 home foreclosures. Or the hundreds of people losing their jobs. Or how to get the troops home. Or why are all our cities so in debt. I hope your staff gets their head out of the toilet and report on some real issues. For now I'm watching ABC and CBS.
Shame, shame, shame on NBC.  You have dedicated an hour of prime time to reinforce the belief.  Being a homosexual is the most deplorable.  And you use this idiot, bottom-feeder Craig as a model.

Apologize to the gay community for this deplorable act you have commited.  Spend equal prime time air and say something positive about gay people.
Hopefully, the Senator Craig types who do have furtive bathroom and hustler sex with other men will die off as more of us SSCs (same-sex couples) live comfortable lives in our homes. Being gay is not a "sex life" as the Senator assumes. His way of living and acting out IS a choice. But the base nature of same-sex desire is not.
Larry Craig is a hypocrytical pig.  He is a disgrace to the gay community.
The one personal question that Matt didn't ask but should have.  Mr. Craig, Did you poop?  If you went to the toilet to use the toilet then I believe you.  If you did not have a BM I don't
One point that those with no experience in sexual contact between two males wouldn't know is these days thousands of totally straight men get off being "serviced" because there are guys willing to do so. It's quick, convenient and probably a bit exciting but believe it or not, doesn't make the guy getting off bi or gay. So it's quite possible that the senator isn't. I don't really care. In adult bookstores across the country there are straight men watching straight porn receiving oral sex from a guy. And there's not the slightest chance they think it's not a man on the other side of that hole in the wall. No difference "face to crotch" in a men's room.
How ignorant do Craig & his wife think the American people are?
