The Year of Living Biblically

What happens when you follow the Bible as literally as you can in the modern age? Journalist and author A.J. Jacobs found out when he spent a year taking a spiritual journey, following more than 700 Biblical rules for 52 weeks.

He chronicles the journey in The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible. He sat down with Matt this morning to discuss the book and his experience. WATCH VIDEO

A.J. during his Year of Living Biblically...

...
and after his return to his regular life.

I had some questions of my own, so A.J. stuck around for a few more minutes. We talked about what his wife withheld from him, why he ate insects and what a person who has to dress in white all the time wears to a black tie event.

Here's our conversation:

Q: Once you had a really good beard going and were wearing sandals and white robes, were you constantly having to explain yourself to people on the street?

A.J. Jacobs: I was. I definitely got some second looks. Occasionally people would cross the street to avoid me. But at the same time, there were people who were very interested in my project. And in some cases, I felt very flattered because some people said they felt more reverent in my presence, and that they didn't want to lie or gossip, which was a nice side benefit.

Q: What were some of the more bizarre reactions you got from people on the street?

A.J.: Well, I got everything from being treated like a D-list celebrity, where people would take photographs of me with their friends to one guy who made an obscene gesture at me. What I did to provoke him, I don't know. In fact, I did nothing to provoke him, I was just wearing my Biblical clothing and my beard. But apparently he did not like it.

Q: Was he maybe making obscene gestures at everyone or did he single you out?

A.J.: He seemed to be singling me out...he clearly was not following the Golden Rule, because I would not make obscene gestures at him.

Q: Was there ever a point where you thought about quitting? That there was too much stress on your life, too much stress on your marriage...

A.J.: Absolutely, all the time. As you say, there was a lot of stress on my life. I had to build a hut in my living room, and my wife wouldn't kiss me for the last two months of my year, because the beard was so voluminous. So it was a huge challenge. I'm glad I made it through.

Q: What about food? How did your diet have to change for this?

A.J.: I did try to do a Biblical, Old Testament sort of diet. No pork, no shellfish. I ate a lot of hummus, I drank goat's milk, because they drank goat's milk back then. I even tried to eat some crickets, because in the Bible, it says specifically that you're supposed to eat crickets. It sounds like a crazy rule, but if you think about it, it actually makes sense, because a plague of locusts comes, wipes out the crops, what do they have left to eat? Crickets, the locusts.

Q: You were supposed to wear white all the time, right?

A.J.: I did wear white all the time.

Q: Say you and your wife are invited to a black tie wedding...what do you wear to an event like that?

A.J.: Well that is a great question, but luckily I never got invited to a black tie wedding (or a white tie wedding). In the Bible, there's a line in Ecclesiastes that says, "Let your garments always be white." So I tried to follow that literally. And I have to say, it was one of the best parts of my experience. Wearing white made you feel lighter and more spiritual. You felt like you couldn't be in a bad mood if you were all white and looking like you were playing tennis.

Q: Getting ready for Wimbledon.

A.J.: Right, exactly.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you miss from that lifestyle, from that year that you maybe can't incorporate into your life now?

A.J.: There's a lot, because there were some amazing rules and amazing experiences. One thing is that weirdly, when the year ended, I felt unanchored. I felt overwhelmed by choice. There were too many options. I had lived a very structured life, and there was something too that. We all talk about freedom of choice in this country. But there's also something to be said for freedom from choice. Should you read a gossip magazine about Cameron Diaz? No. Should you give 10 percent of your money to the needy? Yes. So it provides some structure, which can be very appealing.

Q: Is there any particular thing from the Bible that resonates with you from your day now?

A.J.: Absolutely, there are lots of things. It was definitely a life-changing year. One thing is, as I mentioned on the show, I was saying thanks so often that it became part of my routine. And it's a great thing, because you forget to thank for all the little things that go right in a day instead of focusing on the three or four that go wrong.

And one other thing, I had kind of a perspective change. As one of my spiritual advisors said, you can either look at the world as a series of rights and entitlements or as a series of responsibilities. And the Bible says to look at it as a series of responsibilities, and I love that. It's like the JFK quote. Ask not what your country -- or the world -- can do for you, ask what you can do for the world. It's a great perspective to strive for. I don't always achieve it, but I try.

The point of all the Laws is to show man's inability to keep them all and how each one of us needs a Savior. This fellow's journey is not done. hopefully he continues on it.
hey listen up, ya gota really send me a copy of your book. i,ll tey to pay ya with something. but i certainly want to read about how not just reading GODS holy word but following it to a tee as we country or mountain folks say. please i do my very best to follow GODS holy word daily, in no way i can be perfect but reading your story  or should say just a bit of it gives inspiration even to the greatest beleivers in "THE GREAT I AM". please i truly enjoyed reading this great piece especially going thru heart attachs sister stroking out an we are GOD fearing folks. but we all atill need the hearing of others an how the profoundly come to know GOD an his word. so please be kind enough to send me your book. i may be poor in material but in GOD i truly have riches beyond eyes of man. i so appreicate you all writing this especially on this blessed day!
AJ,
Now that you've experienced some of the word of God it may be time experience the other part, I mean why stop half way. Obey Christ & his apostles commands & seek eternal salvation John 3:3 & Act 2:38

And you must follow the commands...literally!!
I wish more people would take a second look at there religion. It does keep you grounded. Cudos to your strength.
I have never understood this wearing of robes and sandles in order to be "literal".  It would seem that the reason they wore those things in the first place was becuase it was appropriate for the era in which they lived.  So, to be more "literal" one would wear something that is appropriate for the era in which we live today, right?
It is a tough thing to walk in another man's shoes.  It can be a bigger challenge to try to sincerely understand another person's religion, even if only from the perspective of it's rules.  Bravo.
A pleasure to read your story.
I think what this man did was amazing and challenging. I respect him for his attempt to look at life this way.  I look forward to reading his book and I wish to thank him for writing it and taking us all on this adventure with him through it.
I want to know how he wasn't arrested at some point for stoning people to death.  The whole book of Leviticus seems like it could land you in jail if you followed it literally.
I like that you stated you had a perspective change.  As your spiritual advisor said,  "you can either look at the world as a series of Rights and Entitlements",  or as a series of responsibilities.  People like the Duggars should take heed to this by realizing -- That it really isn't their right or entitlement to over populate an already  "overpopuated" world.   And to use their brain instead of their reproductive parts.
What is amazing here the real point of the bible is not the rules and regulations. We are sinners saved by grace. So when Jesus enters our hearts and lives it changes us from inside out. As Dr James Kennedy so beautifully said in one of his sermons so many people are going to miss heaven by 18 inches. Our works do not impress God at all, its our heart.
Okay, here goes...first of all, if you follow the Bible literally, you would know that there are two Testiments-old and new. Now, when Jesus died and rose again, the laws of the Old Testiment no longer are what we are to follow, but instead the laws of the New. I pray that someday, you will see that we are to follow Christ as Christians, not just because we are curious or want our 10 seconds of fame...
There's only one thing wrong with what this guy did. He forgot that the people of Old Testament times couldn't get it right either. Basically I think he wasted his time. All he needed to do was read the New Testament.
My question is -- What have you done with Jesus Christ?  He is the person you need to seek after and not try to live as they did 2000 years ago.
I applaud your search and your questioning. Everyone should do this. However, now that you have "literalized" the Old Testament, you need to do the same with the New Testament, as it is the natural progression from over 400 profesies in the Old Testament. There is overwhelming evidence that Jesus lived with us, and was the Son of God, and rose from the dead for our salvation. Don't miss the most important and critical part of the journey, you just began.  You are so close to the Truth and the Life. Complete your journey, and may God bless you.
So, if this gentleman kept all of the commandments, did he follow ALL of the commandments, such as to "remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy"? The Sabbath day as ordained and given in creation was and STILL IS Saturday. Constantine changed the day to Sunday in order to fulfill his ideal worship to the Sun-god Ra ... we all need to obey the commandments and keep the Sabbath holy!

Did AJ participate in ANY of the ordained FEASTS of the LORD? The pagan holidays such as Christmas and Easter are all tied bag to pagan sun god worship, or to mythical greek gods.
God Bless You.  I admire your courage and stamina.
Loved this story and would like to see more people try this.
You made my day.  I am inspired by your story and strength.  This proves that God does exsist for he has touched you and your family.
Jesus was never seen being transported via Taxi Cab.  Why didn't you ask him how managed to obtain cab fair and why did this guy select not to walk everywhere?  Didn't Jesus truly sacrifice himself without worldly possessions and conveniences? This guy is just trying to sell a book. What a disappointment.
I think it's wonderful that instead of decrying what's wrong with the world, AJ set a positive tone.  I agree with the respondent who stated that when Jesus came he came to rewrite the mores and beliefs of Old Testament which has its moments that one would not take literally but still the majority of churches still follow.  Christianity is the New Testament and we were even given an ideal in the form of Christ to follow and this ideal said emphatically, "love one another as I have loved you."

Anything made more difficult than that command has run off course.  So, a challenge to all of us - "just do it!"  And then you'll find how challenging it really is to be called Christian.
How were the crickets? Did you roast them or boil them? When your wife stopped kissing you, did you by any chance suggest you should hire a handmaiden? I'd like to try something like this but the circumcision part.....it literally stopped me in my tracks.
You should understand that the old testament consists of the foretelling of the coming of the Christ.  The new testament fulfils this prophesy.  Jesus Christ is the only way to our most high God.  That is the most wonderful, blessed story ever told.
Thank you for choosing this topic for a book. Regarding some of the negative feedback I'd like to answer with a quote from Mother Teresa "If you judge people, you have no time to love them."
I think following the old testament is needed to follow the new testament. I have studied many religions so that I would know the truth; but they all choose what they will adhere to or not. I believe if you hunger and thirst, God will give you food and water. I would like to know how you plan to live now and what you will teach your children. Life is challenging and living by God's rules more challenging. I decided to live by the basic laws of all the religions and being a native American, I cause no harm, leave the world in it's natural state, treat people with love and compassion, offer a helping hand when the opportunity presents itself, ask to be forgiven each day and in turn forgive every person every day, I am faithful to my husband of 26 years and have been since we married, I actually love every single person in the world, although I do not love their actions and choices. I hope your experience included a trip to Jerusalem, I pray I will get to go before I die, because you could not literally live the Bible without walking in the sand and heat and seeing a man tending his flock of sheep day after day. There is a lot to be said for people of this era that can actually bear the boredom, ridicule, and discipline required to follow the rules of God. What a blessing to have the resources and support to choose how you live your life; life usually chooses the way you live it.

It is a pleasure to see an interview regarding the Christian faith televised on national television.  Everyone can speakl out openly reagrding their faith except Christians.  It appears as if we are being silenced especially in the public sector.  Thank you for your boldness of faith.  I do so hope the love of God the Father and Jesus Christ our Saviour was one of A.J's experiences.
The bible was written thousands of years ago.      at the time there world only consisted of what they saw. People still beleaved the world was flat for a thousand or so years later. God knew what the world was for he made it. I guess the bible was written for the people in just a small area for the people that they knew then. I think it just shows man that god is always god and we are just his followers.
I think god is real and I do not have to live as if I was born 3 thousand years ago to proove it.
I'm wondering what happened when he threw rocks at blasphemers.  I know exactly what I would have done if he'd thrown rocks at me.  I'd have killed him.  Plain and simple.

This idea is almost as stupid as the concept of an invisible man that lives in the sky.  Religion is the ultimate evil.  All religions proclaim to be about love, but all they do is serve to separate us from one another.  The wall that separates the Palestinians from the Jews is RELIGION.  The wall that separates the Irish from the English is RELIGION.  The wall that separates the Blue states from the Red states is RELIGION.

I don't expect anyone to turn away from religion because of my post.  I just want each of you to know what you are a part of and why, next time you question your faith, you should consider thinking for yourself.
THE BIBLE STATES THAT IF YOU LIVE BY THE BIBLE PEOPLE WILL THINK YOU ARE CRAZY.
Hilarious.  Someone makes an attempt to understand religion and spirituality, seemingly comes out as a better person, and people rush at the chance to tell him that he did it wrong, and that he's a fraud.  Perhaps not everyone has learned the Bible's lessons as well as they think they have.  I am not a religious man, but isn't there something in there about "Judge not?"
A. J. Jacobs states that he lived "by the Bible" for a whole year emphasizing the Ten Commandments.  Yet, on your website, (I haven't read the book) nothing is said about all of the sacrifices and atonements that were commanded in the Old Testament.  And what about the pilgrimages to Jerusalem to the temple, etc?

And where in the Bible does it say that they wore white robes all the time? Living under the Old Testament or old law was a very difficult task.  But, we are not to live under that law today, thankfully, because Jesus Christ nailed it to the cross when he died and now we have a much better law, one that can save us eternally, which the old law could not.

As is stated in several of the other coments, he needs to look further.  Also, the New Testament teaches that the Pharisees stood and prayed publicly very eloquent prayers to get attention.  Christ teaches that if we are Christians, we don't have to tell the world, for the world will know by the way we conduct our lives.
This morning on an early morning talk show an author was interviewed about a book he had written. The title, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble (humble?) Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, caught my attention.  I did watch the interview. The author, AJ Jacobs, decided to write a book of a true  life experience. He consciously created the true life  experience knowing he would write about it.  He seemed like a nice enough guy, smiling, laughing.  But what was he smiling and laughing about? God, the Bible? Yes.  Blasphemy? Possibly I suppose.

He grew a beard wore sandals and a white ("In the Bible, there's a line in Ecclesiastes that says, "Let your garments always be white." So I tried to follow that literally.") robe for a year. He changed his diet, his appearance, his lifestyle and to some degree even his way of thinking about the Bible and Christianity.  He purposely made a spectacle of himself in public to get various people's reactions.  He played instruments of Biblical times  twice a day literally(in public). (Psalm 147:7 Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God upon the lyre!)  He even at one time stoned an adulterer "literally" he said.  It seems a man approached him in a park and inquired as to what he was doing. The author explained that he was attempting to follow the Bible literally.  The man  admitted to the aspiring author that he was an adulterer. The adulterer asked what are you going to do stone me?  He threw pebbles at him.

When asked what was the main thing he learned from this experience, he said, he had a rude awakening.  He was surprised at how much he sinned on a daily basis.  He said no matter how hard he tried to be  a good person and follow every rule in the Bible, even the Levitical laws such as not wearing clothing of mixed fibers, he always messed up pretty regular. Jacobs was astounded how much he sinned. When asked what "rules" he broke the most, he said, lying, gossiping, and coveting. He even admitted he had probably sinned during the interview.

The Truth that Jacobs took away from this year of trying to live it literally was this, he said, "If you take the Bible, too literally, you will miss out on the beauty."  He said he continues to honor the Sabbath day as a day or rest because he needs the rest.  He said, "Whether or not there is a God, we should be reverent of holy things." He ended the interview by saying that he learned it is important to be thankful for hundreds of little things everyday that we take for granted.

I guess if I could interview him I would want to ask who is it that he is thankful to if not God. I would ask him if he had figured out that none are good, no not one, even someone attempting to live the Bible literally, does he not then realize that he literally needs a Savior.

Mr. Jacobs said his major purpose for this project was a young son. He said when his son asked about religion he wanted to know what he should tell him.

Today's devotional ends with this prayer request. Please pray A J Jacobs will come to a literal saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and can teach his son the beauty of our Savior who loves us so much that He came and literally died on a cross  to save us all, AJ Jacobs included.
Dear AJ,
I am fortunate enough to work in a bookstore in the south. I received an advance copy of the book last month and was amazed. It's a great book and I will be recommending it to all.
What a waist of time! Why don't you try to live like the people in the caverns as a theme for your next charade?
Firstly, if I may...
Those who feel this is an opportunity to extol Jesus, ok well, it's not. I am a Christian, but this story isn't about being saved, it's about triumph and dedication in God's name and one mans mission to try to accomplish that.

Lastly, Thank you for doing this. I think, for myself, I will give this a "go", but in a more modern sense (as suggested by others here). Not ancient garb, but all white, modern (albeit humble) clothing.
Being an actor, this won't be easy as most of the time, wardrobe does not permit white as a color to be wear on set... but I will try as to my best ability. And in the end, I hope, and pray, to see what you're experiencing.
Wow, there are so many people here on this post that are judging this man.  I guess they are the ones to be worshiped since they are perfect and have the grandness to throw stones of their own. It must be so wonderful not to ever do anything that someone else doesn't agree w/.  I guess that it is easy when they don't DO anything.
Some of those rules were not rules but sayings or cliche's like the garment's be white thing. That was not a law it was like saying "may all your Christmases be white" obviously not everyone can have a white Christmas.
There is no reason to think people would react negatively to this man's experiment, and yet the first three questions-- 30% of the interview-- were premised on the untrue notion that the man had been overwhelmed with negative reaction.  That's obnoxious, and it belies a perverse sort of journalistic judgementalism: 'oh, you and I, A.J., are cool about this, but the average person out there, well, he just can't handle difference'.
His choice to do this experiment was between him and God, and therefore its purpose and its benefits are known to him only.  The fact remains that he took the leap of faith and the iniative to undertake this spiritual act, while the rest of you who have NOT attempted to do so sit at your computers to degrade and disect is own act of faith.  As the bible tells us, we should remove the plank from our own eye before removing it from our friends. I struggle with this everyday as well.  Let us not be judgemental, and allow this to remain between Himself and Almighty God.
As a messianic Jew who knows, accepts and follows Yeshua as my King, I have to reply to the people who say they are belivers and yet want to abolish the Tanakh, or "Old Testament". Where exactly did Yeshua say it was done away with? Certainly not in Matthew 5 when he says "I have not come to do away with the Torah (Law) but to fullfill it"
As in the sacrificial and priestly system. And thats not even done away with per say, in a physical sense yes, but not spiritually. If you believe HIS blood covers you, then the Levitical sacrifice system is still in effect! Also, the only sins that demanded death in Torah were the willful, defiant sins. The others, accidental and such where what the sacrifices were for!
I might add one other thought.....the Biblical (not Jewish) feast days are for us, through all generations, permanent, thats what God's word says, now do you think HE was in error and changed his mind? Or are human beings in error? The feast days are when he not only has promnised to be here powerfully among us, but also a rehearsal for things to come. They are prophetic. Passover (Pesach)- Exodus form Egypt / Yeshua on the cross and His resurrection, Pentacaust(Shavuot)- Torah given at Mt Sinai / gift of the Holy Spirit, Rosh Hashanna - His return Yom Kippur - The day of judgemnt Tabernacles (Sukkot) Yeshua's birth / The wedding feast

Shalom
Sadly he got so much wrong. There are no commands to eat crickets or locusts (just that they are kosher/fit to eat), there are no commands not to cut hair (except for certain tribes of Israel), and the only day our garments are commanded to be literally white is on Yom Kippur (otherwise they are to be AS white as wool; i.e. - we are to be clean from sin). Every command in the Old testament was affirmed and followed by Yeshua (Jesus).

His attempt may have been to follow the Torah (G-d's eternal and unchanging law), but all he succeeded in doing was living as closely as possible to how people lived in biblical times. I pray that his experience will encourage him and others to search the Scriptures, walk in Torah, and follow Yeshua.

"Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud ( ) or a stroke will pass from the Torah  not until everything that must happen has happened. So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven." - Matthew 5:17-19 CJB
Seventh-day Adventists have the truth. Some have rejected the Messiah while others have rejected the law of God. There is no salvation in a life of wilfull, known-sinning.
A.J. Jacobs was born a Jew.  Whether he is a practicing Jew or not, it makes perfect sense that he would use the Old Testament. He is not going to follow Jesus Christ or accept him as his Saviour.  He is JEWISH. Stop trying to push your belief system onto others.
Whatever floats his boat. As for me, I have found life without religion to be the most uplifting and joyous time of my life. I don't need religion or some book to live a good life.
You are an inspiration......if they could walk a mile
in your moccasins!!!
Wow, look at the responses to someone making the effort to do what he considered right for a year! He admitted that he failed to keep the law perfectly, he discovered that the experience changed him for the better, and he continues to seek to live a meaningful life. As Jesus said to the religious people in his time, "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." Way to go, A.J.--may your tribe increase!
This guy was obviously just starved for attention and out to hoodwink a bunch of unsuspecting consumers into buying his book.  To literally follow the Bible (the Old Testament), one of his first responsibilities would be to exterminate all the pagans in Canaan.  Did he do this?  No, because he was just trying to get some attention.  Did he tear down idols and destroy other religious "temples?"  No, he would have been arrested.  He was probably home on the weekends playing PS2 or Xbox and only dressed up in his get-up when he went out on the town.

Someone else mentioned that when his wife stopped kissing him, did he try to get a handmaiden?  Concubinage was the practice of the day in the Bible, why did he ignore these seemingly less tasteful, but still literal, parts?  And did he dash any babies' heads on rocks (Psalm 137:9)?  Nope.  This guy didn't try very hard to be literal.
For God So Loved the World, that He gave His only Son, that Whosoever believeth on Him shall be SAVED!John 3:16....think about it.
The hatred of this man by Christians is telling, assuming that he is unsaved just because he tried to live a Biblical lifestyle for a season. Christians have murdered millions for the last 1,800 years based upon their worldview. Their hands are covered with blood. The message is similar to Islam, "Convert or die and we will help god out in this regard". Hitler impisoned and murdered in the name of "Christ". Spewing venom and curses at other humans for trying to live a Holy life is NOT PLEASING to the Holy One of Israel and bears bitter fruit. There are two witnesses in the Scriptures; the Torah instructions of YHWH/the Father for life and the Living Torah, Yahshua Ha Moschiah/Jesus Christ. Both agree in minute detail and are never opposed to one another! Blessings.
Hmm.  How about Deuteronomy 6:5?  "And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."  Did he do that for an entire year?  A month?  A week?  How about a day?  How about 15 minutes, then?

Seems like one would have to have that down perfectly before claiming to have followed the Old Testament law perfectly for one year.
