Gun-Toting Chris Matthews?

There was a time when Chris Matthews, host of "Hardball" and "The Chris Matthews Show," walked the halls of the U.S. Capitol as a policeman, carrying a .38 Special. That's right, Chris walked around Washington with a loaded weapon. Can you imagine?

The full story is that in 1971, in order for Chris to get a job working as a legislative assistant for Utah senator Frank Moss, he had to spend the summer working as a Capitol policeman.

He served his summer, went to work for Senator Moss in the fall, and the rest is history -- more than three decades later, he's now one of Washington's most powerful voices.

This morning, he sat down with Matt to talk about his new book, Life's a Campaign: What Politics Has Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation, and Success. WATCH VIDEO  READ EXCERPT

The book is about Chris's life in politics, but it's also about the lessons that he's learned in his 36 years working in and around Washington -- and how we can apply those lessons to our own lives.

For example, one of the themes of the book is listening, which all good politicians have mastered. He points out that we can all learn from them, since listening is vital to success in all of our lives -- as we work towards a promotion, develop a romantic relationship or make a new friend.

Chris writes, "It may be a surprising thing to hear from me, the notorious on-air interrupter, but not only is it polite to let people say what they wish to, it's also downright seductive. The best gift you can give is your attention. Believe me, I'm trying to get better at this."

And if you heard Matt reference Chris's 2004 interview with former senator Zell Miller and want to watch the clip, you can see it HERE.

I always value Chris's opinion.  I'm sure that his book is a plethora novel infomation. Unlike Ann Cloulter's book that she got air time to advertise on the today show. But that's what makes N.B.C. a great NEWS network. The fact that one minute you are hearing an intelligent
conversation, the next minute Ann Clouter. Then N.B.C. let's the viewers reach there own conclusions.
This page sez it all about the human condition about politics in Wash. This is what make Matthews,Matthews! The fact is Truth, according to Matthews, is how one percieve,s their own reality. Perpective is in the eye of the beholder. Sometime he,s get it right and other times he like the rest of us.Who,what, were, when and why? He,s a social consevative with a middle class bent, which at times make you say to yourself, what the hell did he just say, well it entertaining at least which I am sure this book is. Maybe all that expierence in Wash might be useful and trying to make inroads into the conflict of truth in politics. Like getting along for the children sake in for the parents that raise them. Properity at home and Peace abroad and forever more the pursuit of Happiness. Which I think Matthews is seeking like the rest of us on the self discovery of life. What the saying,Were spritual being having a human expirence.I think his Dad would say, good job son, but you can do better. Like we all should! Can,t wait for the next one.
Couldn't put the book down.  How lucky we are to have Chris Matthews, a fine, decent, eloquent man.  He doesn't get carried away with himself (although he certainly has the credentials).  He exudes trust.  How refreshing!  Keep on keeping "them" honest.
I am a seventy six year old lady in Georgia. I have
watched Chris for years, every day at five oclock.,Plan to read his book, however if he stays on Hillary every nigjt he is going to lose me. A week after the debate is more than enoughI am not crazy about her,but enough now.
