Countdown to Springsteen: First Fans

What does it take to be a true Bruce fanatic? There are many ways to show your dedication, and a few people are literally proving it all night (pardon the Bruce pun) as I write this. At 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, about 20 people were already lined up to get prime spots for Friday's concert on the plaza.

So who is first? Two women from Cleveland, Shelly and Laura, who flew in for Shelly's birthday. They arrived on the plaza at 8 a.m. on Thursday morning, watched the show, and said, "Everybody form a line!" on 48th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues (I promise that will be my last Bruce pun). Here they are:

They arrived in New York on Wednesday, and the trip was a gift from Shelly's husband (who is also Laura's boss). They've been going to Springsteen shows since 1980, and this will be the first time they've seen him outside of Cleveland. They've also never camped out overnight for a concert like this, so that gives you an idea of just how special this performance is going to be.

Shelly and Laura have plenty of company already, including a three-generation family that came in from Ohio, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Grandmother Molly, who just turned 67, declared that everyone needed to get together in Bruce's honor, so here they are: grandmother Molly, daughters Liz, Peggy and Kath, and granddaughters Molly and Mary Elizabeth.

Three generations of Bruce fans from three states: grandmother Molly,
daughters Liz, Peggy and Kath, and granddaughters Molly and Mary
Elizabeth.

So what songs are they hoping to hear? Well, pretty much everything in Bruce's repertoire. But they did mention "Badlands," "Glory Days," "Born to Run," "Darlington County" and "Jungleland." I hope they're not holding their breath for any of those, but I'm sure they won't be disappointed with the setlist.

WOW you people are amazing.
there is NOTHING on this planet like a live concert of the boss
Hi, I'm the 92 year old mother, grandmother & great grandmother of this bunch of woman waiting to see this bruce person who ever he is!!! but he must be pretty good for them to sit outside all night waiting for him to perform. p.s. I love you Matt!!
I wish I could be there. I'll be watching in envy.
i would give anything to be there
You lucky lucky people. I'm in cold grey England, unable to get tickets for the only UK show, and hoping Bruce comes back to Europe in 2008. Enjoy!
Bruce is a poet. I've seen him at venues all over Europe since 3 times in 1985 in UK in Newcastle, Leeds and London. The last of those was 4th July and he came on solo with acoustic and started with Independence Day. This occasion I was at the concert with my 6 yr old son. I get goosebumps now 23 yrs later just thinking about that song of Father/Son breakdown. I was determined it wouldn't happen to us and I'm proud to say that my son and I are still best pals and he is just as much a fan of Bruce as I remain. Will queue all day to be at the front for the London concert. And my (same) wife and I are going to the Chicago concert too in seats this time.
Sorry if I'm going on but this guy is such a part of my life. Last story.... my daughter just got married and I got a Bruce quote into the "father of the bride" speech. It went over her head at the time but a whoop from son Jack on hearing "from small things, great things surely come".
Love and peace to all.
Julian
Have fun in NY at the Today show today...wish I was there but will see him in November with my three Bruce-aholic friends....LONG LIVE THE BOSS!!
What lousy coverage of one of Americas great singers .Not only havnt you show one song in full you made us endore a mother daughter duet while bruce was singing in the backround .Boy have you dropped the ball
my wife lori mulcahy davidson got to the studio at 4pm yesterday and has been waiting all night with a group of people. She is now near the front, but there is a VIP section between her and the stage. You can see her tattoo on the nbc website and her story on how his music saved her life. She has been talking about this performace since it was rumored to happen many weeks ago. She is going to see them play 9 times before they go to Europe after thanksgiving. She is a very big fan and has seen the band play more than 50 times!!!faith will be rewarded as she always says.
Any true Bruce fan knows that there is nothing like seeing him live in New Jersey.
I too am a huge Bruce fan, and I do have tickets for the show in Hartford, Ct on Tuesday.  Unfortunately, I had to pay triple the face value to get one,  All the tickets went to the broker sites within 4 minutes of the time they went on sale.  I got floor "seats", but found out later that the floor is "general admission" - basically, first come, first serve to get close enogh to the stage to see anything.  When I see a Springsteen show, I get to relive my youth...Bruce and the Band make me feel 18 again.  That's really something considering I'm 49 yeays old now.  I'm actually afaid that I will fall and break a hip in the crush of people on the floor! I will always be a huge fan of Bruce, but at some point, the price of a ticket will be beyond my reach.  And as all Springsteen fans know....it's ALL ABOUT THE SHOW!  I'd love to ask Bruce to do something about this ticket problem.  These days, the brokers win, and the fans lose.  Bruce always sings for the common man, but these days, the common man doesn't stand a chance to get a ticket.  I still love you Bruce!
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN! To see this group live is unbelievable. He puts his body and heart into every song. Wish I was there. I'll be watching on TV in envy. I'm going to the Oct. 17 at the Garden with my niece her husband and thier 8 year old son Neil. It's Neils first concert ever. How lucky is he. So enjoy the show. ROCK ON BRUCE!!!
Bruce used to practice on Jerseyville Ave., Freehold, NJ. I know, because it was the home of the family that used to babysit me, 36 or 37 years ago (the Oakes'). I remember him way before he was "The Boss". Keep on rockin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Shelly and Laura you rock! I know you are having a blast in NY.  See you when you get back in town.  Have a great time seeing Bruce in the front row!
I wish I could also be there, back on 2003 I flew to Holland to see Bruce in Rotterdam, I wish I could watch the Today show but unfortunately they don't air it here.
Too bad some of us are at work.  What about streaming the concert??
Joyce Millar
Philadelphia, PA
Yea Bruce!! I lived on the Jersey Shore when Bruce and his band, then called Child, practiced at a Surfboard Factory.  His then drummer, Vinnie Lopez, lived in the Factory and we used to go visit Vinnie and go surfing with him.  Also saw the band at The Stoned Pony. Ah,,such great memories!! I live in Columbia, SC now & have seen Bruce several times here and in North Carolina. I'd give anything to be in NYC at TODAY show!!!  Kathy (Curley) Bishop, Columbia, SC
OMG!  There is no other concert that can match a Bruce concert!  You leave the arena totally exhaused!
I would love to be there...Seen Bruce and his band many times here in Philly, but never in New York. I am there in spirit!
I was in New York in April when Bruce made a 'surprise' appearance at the Carnegie Hall benefit.
Great New album looking forward to seeing him live in London in December. A big hello to all on SPL.
If there is one thing I would wish for.....it would be to see Bruce live at least once in my life.
I wish he would either come to Oklahoma or even somewhere South so I would have this opportunity.
He has been an inspiration in my life for many, many years!
Hi there, all you lucky Brucetramps out there in New York City. Over here in Europe we'll have to wait a couple of months! Have a great time and say hi from us in Europe to the one and only Boss!!!
all the best,
Roy (from the Netherlands)
Thank you, thank you for this awesome concert!!!  I'm having a blast here but wish I could be there.  Couldn't get tickets for this tour, they sold out so fast, I'm bummed out about that, but this concert helped me a bit.  BRUCE YOU ROCK!!!!  I love your music, keep on rockin'.
AMERICANA: Bruce has firmly entrenched himself and the E Street Band as a very large slice of our lives.Superb musicians all,(Nils once had a very successful rockin' band named Grin) They haven't missed a beat, while if you go to a Stones concert you kinda feel sorry for them because they've aged so,kinda like going to a baseball oldtimers game and lamenting the fact Willie Mays can't run like a deer anymore and cover the whole outfield all by himself.Well Bruce and the boys look and sound as good as ever. Must be all the chemicals in our Jersey water. Whatever the reason God Bless Bruce and the E Street Band for all the joy you've brought into our lives and for showing that white boys sure got a whole lotta rythm and soul. There's been nothing better since so ROCK ON FOREVER!!!!
Wish I could have been there with you!!!  I have been a fan since the early '80's when the pop music of that time left a lot to be desired.  I believe this music helped to instill in me what being an American is all about.  Still LOVE Bruce!  The house got ROCKED today!
What a way to start the day! It doesn't get any better than this! Bruce! (and of course, Matt too!)

Looking forward to seeing Bruce in Cleveland and Pittsburgh with all the other wonderful Bruce fans!
Bruce is a living legend; one of a rapidly fading breed of true rock and roll entertainers. A cultural icon for sure, but more than that, a man and a "celebrity" with humility, and integrity.  BROOOOOOCE !!!! We Love Ya.
I watched the Today show....it was a great concert,
couldn't believe how many songs Bruce did, I am
saw about 2 concerts in Philadelphia at the Spectrum in the 70's Wachovia Center.  He never changes.
I  know this new album will be a great one.
Thanks Bruce for a great morning.
Mary Kay from Downingtown, PA
Dear Matt, Meredith and the Today staff, today was my day off. Wow, what a treat.  Instead of doing laundry, scrubbing, etc., I sat for over an hour and enjoy.  I am a senior (!), dealing with cancer patients on a daily basis.  Today was my day to enjoy.  Thanks to all of you for making my day off a great one.
As a Former New Jesery-ite..Theres NOTHING like FAMILY & the BOSS..Its All AMERICAN!!! Those Ladies is 3 GEN of Pure Beauty From the Grandmother to the Youngest W@W! And I Love the Great Grandmother even got in on it from IL with an E-Mail..LOL.. Bruce is an icon of New Jesery And to be there in THE GREATEST CITY EVER would be any fans dream come true!  LONG LIVE NEW YORK and The BOSS!!!! God Bless N.Y. P.S These Ladies is My Cousins Too Love Ya's Riley Girls...LOL
It was great seeing the band on the Today show. Their sound is very tight. I first heard of Bruce& the E Street Band after listening to my older brother LP of "The Wild, The Innocent, & The E Street Shuffle. Ever since than it was hard not to accept his music, being from Philadelphia, Bruce's stories were that of the corner boys' in the urban cities of NYC, NJ & Philly. In 1978 I got to see him perform during the "Darkness on the edge of town", it was a " grueling 4 plus hours of showmanship. Keep on rockin'.
Way to go Bruce, the richest man in the USA thinks he is working class, he never worked a day in his life.
WOW! AWESOME, JUST AWESOME!!  I just saw that concert!  I was dancing through the house.  I want to go buy that CD right now.  I just loved every song!!  Bruce and his band are amazing! It was so great how they obliged the fans and played another song.  I could just feel the electricity from the crowd, Matt, and Natalie as people were chanting for one more song.  Thanks for such an exciting start to my day!!
I was there when Bruce performed on the boardwalk at Convention Hall this week and it was amazing. Seeing him perform in my hometown and his spot is a priceless moment! His music helps inspire me to live each day with no regrets. Love you Bruce and the E-street BAND!!!!!

NJ loves you very much!!!!
There is nothing like a Springsteen concert! ESp seeing him in NJ!But if ya cant see him in NJ, NY will do!
I had to work today but hope to catch this on vidieo at home later. Bruce rocks like no other! I have seen him at least 10 times. When I hear  Bruce play, Im 17 again, driving in my car, windows down, on a hot summer day , music cranking! It doesnt get better than that!

BRuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccccccce!!
There isn't one other rock-and-roll band that has endured as gracefully as Bruce and ESB. When was the last time a band that has been around for 30+ years still seemed so relevant? From what I've heard, this is going to be one of Bruce's best!  Just paid $396 to score two tickets to the Garden Oct. 18th.  Only for Bruce and ESB!!!
We are also a 3 generation family.  I first introduced my brother and mother to Bruce music back in the early 80's. The DC Bruce concert is a family affair: My mother and brother who have seen Bruce many times. My 11 yr old nephew, his 1st Bruce concert with the E Street Band, and my boyfriend, his rookie Bruce concert. Can't wait!!!
Mike, Bethany Beach DE...Said Bruce never worked a day in his life? Then you think being a musician is Not work! Then the STONES isn't workers, the Beatles Isn't workers, ELVIS did'nt work either? come on man,What do you think Work is ? BRUCE Stands up for the Workers..Listen to the MUSIC..And as far as him being a MILLIONAIRE$$$$ He WORKS hard for the Money!  BRUCE In N.Y = Priceless..My Hometown!
When you mention Bruce...I get goose bumps....seen him so many times in concert and in person at New Jersey bars....his a true New Jerseyan...and a great live entertainer I have ever saw perform....keep up the good work Boss!!!!!
Awesome!  This is great reading all the comments about Bruce!  Yes indeed Bruce "The Boss" is the best at what he does.  We have seen almost 500 concerts and his shows are by FAR the best. We have seen Bruce 14 times so far and have tickets to both of the Boston shows.  We looking forward to the CD coming out on Tuesday.  Keep on rocking!
I got my fingers crossed for a "Jungleland" the final night of the US tour in Boston.

Bob (A diehard Bruce fan from Maine)
Met my wife 24 years ago in Asbury Park @ THE Stone Pony when Bruce, Steve and Clarence crashed and played with Cats on a Smooth Surface in 1982. We always love catching him in concert when we can. There is nothing like a Springsteen/E Street Band concert announcement to sell out numerous shows in hours. What a treat to catch him on live on the TV in the morning.
A great friend and Bruce fan and I went to the Today show and it was fantastic! Bruce was relaxed and told a joke while we were waiting. I too have been a fan for thirty years and notice that some longtime fans on this site remember that he hates to be called "the boss". I wish the media knew that! Anyone who calls themselves a fan and calls Bruce boss, isn't really fan. I also agree that the ticket agencies,a.k.a.scalpers, need to be stopped. I think Bruce does his best to thwart it. My kids and friends and I will see Bruce Sat. in Philly. Can't wait!
Happy Birthday Shelly...............So glad you were able to spend it your the way you wanted, rockin' with the BOSS.

I plan to join you soon at bootcamp.

Bootcampers are fabulous women!!!!!!!!!
Bruce, you are my number 1.
Thank you for the happiness you give me with your music.
I wait you in Italy.
Terry
peggy riley who would have ever thouhgt you go from peotone illnois to nyc and be on the today show i bet it was a ball i seen liz and mary elizabeth and kath in the crowd glad yous had fun im bored in colorado
The new songs were great. The Boss  told Matt he was returning to his roots--writing 'big hooks'--and I loved it. I go way back with Bruce, little places like the Far Inn in Long Valley NJ and when he was the LEAD-IN group at the Convention Center in Asbury Park for groups like J. Geils Band (circa 1970) We went all over NJ to hear him.
I`m a portuguese fan since 1980 and when i watch  Today show it was amazing, never saw a concert but after this i know he will come to Portugal for the second time and i`ll be there.
As a true Bruce fan I want to pass this on so  people know for future use....there is a way to get Bruce tickets with out paying double or triple face.  Backstreets.com has a section to buy, sell & trade tickets.  In order to post on the forum you may not ask or offer anything above face value for the tickets (You can add in the service charges from ticketmaster & shipping.  Some don't even charge to ship.)  The site is monitored and people are removed that don't follow the rules.  This site is for true Bruce fans...not those other people trying to make money by taking advatage of others.  I have purchased tickets and have had no problem in the past - good luck!
Bruce is still the champ! Saw him last night at the Continental Airlines Arena, and the 58-year-old cosmic kid has still got it. IS ANYBODY (ROY?) ALIVE OUT THERE!!!????
