Countdown to Springsteen: TODAY Favorites

Posted: Thursday, September 27, 2007 8:30 AM by Dan Fleschner
Filed Under:

We're just one day away from Bruce Springsteen's appearance on TODAY, and everyone here is abuzz with anticipation to hear some of his and the E Street Band's new material as well as two classic songs.

With that in mind, I asked some of the TODAY staff's biggest Bruce fans to share their top five songs and favorite Bruce memories. I invite you to scroll through our lists and post yours as well in the comments section below.

Take a look:

Bruce Springsteen
Mel Evans/AP
Bruce and the band warmed up for the upcoming tour and appearance
on TODAY with the first of two rehearsal shows at the Paramount
Theater in Asbury Park on Monday.

Dan Fleschner -- Your Loyal Scribe (and TODAY producer)

Top five songs (I get to list 10, because I make the rules):
Incident on 57th Street
Thunder Road
Backstreets
This Hard Land
Land of Hope and Dreams
Roulette
My Love Will Not Let You Down
Point Blank
Stolen Car
Downbound Train

Favorite Bruce memory:
I'll be brief, because there are some great stories from my colleagues below. But my favorites begin with my first Bruce show, August 1, 1999, at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. I went with my sister, Andrea, who was about four months pregnant with her first child. Seeing Bruce for the first time was a borderline religious experience. Opened with "Backstreets" and closed with "Land of Hope and Dreams," two of my favorite songs of all time.

Two other quick memories that come to mind -- seeing Bruce and Eddie Vedder perform three songs together on the "Vote For Change" tour in October 2004 was incredible, especially "Betterman" (even though Bruce didn't seem to know the words that well); and Bruce and Bob Dylan hacking their way through "Highway 61 Revisited" at the finale of the Rising tour at Shea Stadium in October 2003.

Erin Reynolds -- TODAY production manager

Top five songs:
Loose Ends
For You
She's the One
The Ties That Bind
Out in the Street

Favorite Bruce memory:
It was less than two months after 9/11, and my father was still grieving the loss of his best friend, who had passed away that day. After hearing that Bruce may be showing up at a Parkinson's Disease charity event, my father and I took a road trip to "Tradewinds," a popular Jersey Shore hangout.

We had already spent a few unsuccessful nights at the Stone Pony, staring at the door, anxiously waiting for Bruce to walk in...and it never happened.

So why would this night be any different? After hours of listening to band after band, no Bruce. Then suddenly, he just walked onto the stage, grabbed a guitar and starting playing...and playing. It felt like forever.

Just as he was getting ready to play his last song, he said, "I would like to dedicate this song to Gerry Nevins, a firefighter from FDNY's Rescue 1, who is no longer with us." He then busted into his own version of "Twist and Shout." Apparently, my father had caught him as he walked in and asked him for the favor. He didn't have to honor it, but he did it. It was a moment my father and I will never forget.

Tammy Fine -- TODAY producer

Top five songs:
The River
Hungry Heart
Streets of Philadelphia
Thunder Road
Secret Garden

Favorite Bruce memory:
I am not sure you know that asking this question would open you up to the ridiculous opportunity you presented me with: waxing poetic on one of my all-time favorite musicians. You see, I hate music. Well, hate may be a little strong, but when asked to do a profile of Led Zeppelin, I asked, Who? To me, music is two groups: Bruce and the E Street Band and U2. Everything is is noise.

So when, a few years ago, my bosses asked if I wanted to go to Asbury Park with Matt Lauer and do an interview with Bruce Springsteen at the Stone Pony... Well, if only I could include a .wav file of the scream.

The interview was fun. But, as if to see how much my young heart could take, Matt and Bruce hit it off so well, Bruce invited us back a week later to take a tour of his old and favorite haunts. We went, and the piece is still among the best things I ever did here. I can't believe I was paid for the day.

Bruce Springsteen is the first concert I ever went to, at The Spectrum in Philly. And I still remember sneaking a lighter in so I could add my flicker to the thousands of others when the lights went down.

Antoinette Machiaverna -- TODAY producer

Top five songs:
Thunder Road
Because the Night
Born to Run (particularly the acoustic version on the Chimes of Freedom EP)
Streets of Philadelphia
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)

Favorite Bruce memory:
As a student of journalism, I knew it was something momentous when Bruce Springsteen appeared simultaneously on the covers of Time and Newsweek on October 27, 1975. I saved the magazines, which survived many moves and my kids without getting a tear or a wrinkle.

I never dreamt that 27 years later, I'd be working for TODAY and be assigned to the Bruce Springsteen Live From Asbury Park show. I thought to myself, I'm going to get his autograph on at least one of those magazines and frame them. How cool is that!

The staff was leaving right after the show the day before the concert. I had several segments on that day and in my rush to pack, I simply forgot the magazines. I thought I'd missed a golden opportunity that probably would never come my way again. But before I left the office to get on the bus, I checked my mailbox for something to read...and in my mailbox was the latest issue of Time. The cover story: Bruce Springsteen and The Rising. It was a gift, and I took it as a sign that there were greater powers at work. I was given a second chance and vowed to get it autographed.

We got to Asbury Park, attended a private rehearsal, and as soon as it was finished, as unprofessional as it was, I jumped on stage and asked Bruce to sign the Time magazine. Today, that magazine is framed, proudly flanked by the 1975 magazines on either side. It's one of my most prized possessions, and it proves not only Bruce Springsteen's longevity and survival, but mine, too!

P.S. The 1975 Newsweek story was written by Maureen Orth, Tim Russert's wife...and one of the reporters was TODAY Travel Editor Peter Greenberg. Small world!

Sarah Clagett -- TODAY producer

Favorite songs:
Glory Days
Born to Run
The Rising

Favorite Bruce memory:
I was the researcher when Bruce gave Matt a tour of his old stomping grounds in Asbury Park back in 2002. One of my responsibilities: get the car Bruce would drive Matt around town in. So I rented a Ford Mustang convertible and headed down to the Jersey Shore.

With cameras in the car, Bruce and Matt headed around town. During the interview, I sat in the chase car with producer Tammy Fine, listening to Bruce and Matt's conversation. Towards the end of the day, the car started "dinging" -- like you'd hear if your seat belt isn't on -- or perhaps if your gas level is low.

After a few minutes, I realized that I hadn't filled the gas tank, and the car Bruce was driving was about to run out of fuel. So, of course, I panicked. But luckily, there were still a few reserve gallons. I can't even imagine what would have happened if the car had run out of gas.

After some initial trouble, Sarah eventually got her photo.

At our last stop on Bruce's tour, he performed a few songs off The Rising... I brought my camera, and at the end of the day, I finally got enough nerve to ask Bruce for a picture. Someone snapped a picture of us, and after he snapped the shot, I wanted to make sure I got it. But I soon realized that my camera didn't work -- no picture.

I told Bruce, "It didn't work," and he responded, "That happens to me all the time. Sometimes, it just doesn't work." We both laughed, and needless to say, we took another photo. And I love that he's holding the keys to the Ford Mustang I rented for him that day.

Sara Pines -- TODAY editor and producer

Top five songs:
Thunder Road
Born to Run (particularly the acoustic version on the Chimes of Freedom EP)
Racing in the Street
Nebraska
Chimes of Freedom (Bob Dylan cover)

Favorite Bruce memory:
I would say I've seen The Boss in concert about 15 times, and I have never been disappointed. Even when my friends were hating the Tom Joad tour, I thought he was great. Different, but great.

The best show I ever saw was at the Asbury Park Convention Hall (yes, the same place we did the live Bruce show on TODAY several years ago), but this was an "open rehearsal" for an earlier tour. I would say it was 1997 or 1998.

It was 2000 dedicated Bruce fans who waited out on a windy boardwalk in the dark to get into Convention Hall...and IT WAS AMAZING. He may have even peeled the paint from the walls (or maybe the Hall was like that anyway). It just felt like Bruce and the boys were a garage band in the neighborhood, and you were there to hang out with them.

Then, I was back at Convention Hall when TODAY was there and was able to be there for early morning rehearsals as well as the on-air performance. I would say that runs a very close second.

Robin Sherman -- TODAY producer

Top five songs:
Thunder Road
Jungleland
Born to Run
Badlands
Growin' Up

Favorite Bruce memory:
One of my favorite Bruce moments was actually here on TODAY, when we did the show from Asbury Park. I worked on that show, and there were two great things. First, I went to Matt's interview a few weeks earlier that he did with Bruce at the Stone Pony -- nothing more authentic Bruce than that!

Then, the day before the live show, since we were all there getting ready for it, Bruce was practicing at the Convention Center there, and literally gave our staff a full concert. The setting was perfect, though it was brutally hot, but it didn't matter -- we had our own private concert right there in Asbury Park.

Dave Scheier -- TODAY set writer

Top five songs:
Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)
Born to Run
My City of Ruins
Land of Hope and Dreams
Jungleland

Favorite Bruce memory:
My wife and I were lucky enough to have Bruce Springsteen's violinist, Soozie Tyrell, perform at our wedding. We remember jamming with her along with 200 other people...now she performs with the E Street Band and the Seeger Sessions band in front of tens of thousands!

My Bruce encounter -- I usually don't get star-struck, but one time I was at a loss for words. Bruce's wife, Patti Scialfa, was performing on the show a couple years ago, and I asked our audio guys to play his song that's a tribute to her. It's called "Red Headed Woman." The only problem is that the first section of the song is a little racy.

I walked into the audio booth and told the guys to watch out, not realizing until too late that Bruce himself was sitting there in the room. I'm not sure he appreciated being edited. I'll keep my eyes open a little wider next time.

Jen Brown -- MSNBC.com senior producer

Top five songs:
Thunder Road
Human Touch
Candy's Room
Happy
I'm Going Down

Comments on "Thunder Road":
Bruce traditionalists will tell you this song is about a young girl named Mary and her lover looking for their "last chance" out of town. They're wrong. This song is about me when I'm 40. I'm not sure how Bruce pulled this off as I wasn't born when he wrote it.

But who am I to question genius? While the lyrics do suggest a bit of sad desperation in my future life, the good news is, apparently I have a porch. Anyway, there's just something about this song that defines home to this Jersey Girl.

Ryan Osborn -- TODAY Producer

Top five songs:
Jungleland
Drive All Night
Brilliant Disguise
Tunnel of Love
New York City Serenade

Ryan's comments:
Even as a kid, I remember hearing Born to Run and knowing it was somehow different. It was happy, sad, fun and serious all at once.

People feel so passionate about Bruce. Is it the man? Is it his music? Is it his message? I think it is his passion and ambition that one person with a guitar can change the world that brings us all together. It ain't no sin to be glad you're alive.

Here are my attempts to explain why those five songs above mean so much to me:

Jungleland -- I guess it's possible that one day I will listen to the sax solo and feel nothing.

Drive All Night -- I like to joke that it's the only song that I've ever truly loved. "I'd drive all night, just to buy you some shoes"...

Brilliant Disguise -- Is it a break-up or a love song? It is so honest that it doesn't make a difference.

Tunnel of Love -- Every day this whole album seems to make more sense to me.

New York City Serenade -- A great song about the greatest city in the world.

Dan Barbossa -- TODAY associate producer

Top five songs:
Thunder Road
Growin' Up
Because the Night
Jersey Girl
10th Avenue Freeze Out

Favorite Bruce memory:
It was October 2003, and unfortunately, I wasn't at Shea Stadium to see my New York Metropolitans in the World Series. But I was seeing Jersey's own Bruce and the E Street Band. I was kind of far from the stage -- like upper deck -- and Bruce was playing Carlos Beltran (deep center field).

It was a good show, though no "Thunder Road" (Bruce, you owe me), BUT Al Leiter, then a New York Mets pitcher, came on stage for "Rosalita" and they closed the show with "Twist and Shout" with Gary "US" Bonds.

"Jungleland"
"Rosalita"
"Darkness on the Edge of Town"
"Sherry Darlin'" (Closest he'll get to singing my name!)
"She's the One"

Okay...I picked 6...so hard to narrow it down!  Too many favorites! He has quite the catalog and they're all great!  He keeps adding more and more...Love the new "Radio Nowhere" too now!

Favorite Bruce memory:  Seeing him live for the very first time at Gillette Stadium in '03 for the Rising Tour.  It was as someone else stated a "religous experience" for me, and at the same time I felt like a giddy school girl all over again!  The man has sooo much energy!  What a great performer!  I'm now addicted to seeing him live every chance I get!  See you in Boston Bruce or is it Boss-town :)  Got my tickets!  Can't wait!  Looking forward to tomorrow on the Today Show too!  Thanks Today Show for bringing on my favorite performer again :)
To have THE BOSS appear on your show on SEPTEMBER 28 is so GREAT.  My good friend,JUDY A.from Kentucky, is maybe his BIGGEST FAN EVER.  It is her BIRTHDAY and it is a BIG ONE.  Al, please say happy birthday to her from the Boss.  Do you think HE would ever say it??????
Bruce Springsteen used to be called the Boss, and he hated it: he is a working, travelin, seeking man's (and woman's )down to earth angel Bard...the songs he writes and sings resonate in my heart so deeply that i cannot even use words to touch the feelings.

Meanwhile, to pick favorites is a wonderful opportunity to share the ones that i love most: but however i can listen to and cherish Bruce's "albums" and CDs story after story after song after musical articulation of Truth with Beauty over and over and over and i do, and over all these many years...

My greatest Bruce memory was during The Rising Tour and a group of us went down to celebrate Sam's 50th birthday and for his birthday, HE bought all of us tickets and put us up in a five star hotel.  And it just happened to be the same hotel Bruce and the band were staying at.  We got to meet Bruce after the show and he signed our tickets and my special edition cd of THE RISING, which I just happened to have with me at the time (lol) To stand next to this inspiring man and look into his eyes and say THANKS for the music was amazing. It was difficult going to sleep knowing that Bruce was just one floor above us. Talk about a Birthday Party!!!!
My Favorite Bruce Memory 6-24-06 at PNC Arts Center.
I had a sign requesting he play Maria's Bed, at one point Bruce stopped and asked if my name really was Maria and said if it wasn't it is tonight and played Maria's Bed for me. I was fortunate enough to meet him the following in night, where I thanked him, hugged him and kissed him even got a photo taken, which was not saved and that person will remain nameless( LOL) , I was grateful and more appreciative to have the opportunity to thank Bruce personally for playing my request. A few months later he signed it for me. It is now framed.  And Yes, Bruce my name really is Maria, thanks again and looking forward  the tour! I have a picture but don't know how to post it.
Top 5 Songs
Thunder Road
Born To Run
Roulette
Another Thin Line
Backstreets

Jungleland, Let's Be Friends, Secret Garden, Thunder Road, Born To Run (hard to stop at just five) The Rising

Note to IPod generation - you never never allow Born to Run to play on shuffle setting.  It's sacreligious.

I have never TIVOed the Today Show but I will tomorrow.
Top five songs(as of right now):
The Promised Land
Badlands
Long Walk Home
The Ties that Bind
Jackson Cage
I'm biased but I choose Red Headed Woman! :-)
How can any Bruce Fan not mention in the top five the song Trapped, The Rising, and no Surrender. Then again to choose just five Bruce songs is a task all unto itself.
I'm 24, live in Israel and what i have to say is
i love'em all, some more than other, some less, some i can't even remember till i listen to them.
a few of which came up in mind are:
10th avenue freeze out (Just love the live versions of it)
backstreet
rosalita (come out tonight)
sherry darling
rendezvous
johnny 99
and more... you can't really have only top 5..

First (and hopefully not last) time i saw him back on 2003, The Rising tour, in Holland. i flew from Israel to Holland, i got there one day before the concert and slept under the rain, near the soccer field, we (me and my friend) were the first people there.
ill never forget it, i got into the pit, i ran the entire field, got inside the pit and was first row, to tell you the truth i still can't believe i was actually in his concert.
I'm trying to figure out how i can ask him to come and perform in Israel, if anyone knows of any way, I'd love to hear from you

Cheers.
Seeing Bruce and the E Street Band at the old Boston Garden, a week after John Lennon was shot, is my best memory of the many times I've seen them. Looking forward to 2 nights at the "new" garden in Nov.
Five songs are tough to pick. My early memories have to pick "For You", "Spirit in the Night", "Incident on 57th St.", "Jungleland", "The Promised Land", but don't hold me to 'em.
Badlands
Because The Night
Pink Cadillac
Dancing in the Dark
Born to Run
Maybe memorable or pulling at your soul best describes my five (there are just too many):
Streets of Philadelphia
Secret Garden
Radio Nowhere
Eyes on the Prize (Live in Dublin)
If I Should Fall Behind (Live in Dublin)
5 best?...impossible. There are just SO many great ones. Also...I don't want to split hairs but it depends to some degree upon whether we're talking about cuts from albums or stage performances.(some merely average album cuts become great when he's performing them onstage) Anyway....here goes:
1.BTR
2.Jungleland
3.Rosalita
4.Thunder Road
5.Badlands
It's almost painful to do this and have to leave off the likes of Sandy (Asbury Park),New York City Serenade (Kudos to Ryan Osborn for picking a great one that too many people have never taken the time to listen to carefully), Blinded By the Light (great hit and cover for Manfred Mann but Bruce's is still the best version).
I apologize for all the great and near-great ones I didn't have time to list

I've seen Bruce 7 times now, but my fave is the time I skipped work and waited in line to get in the front row for the The Rising tour in Milwaukee.  The show was completely electrifying - it brought me to tears and cheers throughout the night.  I did touch Bruce's hand that night (LOVE being in the front row) - but his music has touched my heart and soul my entire life.
Top picks, in no particular order (5 is just not possible):
Candy's Room (I pretend it's Karen's Room)
She's the One
My Hometown
One Step Up
Land of Hope and Dreams
Reason to Believe
No Surrender
Badlands
Trapped
Thunder Road.  And The Rising.  Oh, and Jersey Girl.  Wonder what it is about Thunder Road that has such a universal appeal??
Thunder Road
Born to Run
Jungleland
Candy's Room
Badlands

Just typing those titles gives me the goose bumps! My husband bought tickets for the 11/15 show in Albany, for my birthday, which just so happens to be 9/23!! Happy bday to Bruce! See and hear you soon!
My favourite Bruce memory?  It has to be November 9, 2005 when, much to my very great surprise and delight, Bruce Springsteen pulled out my 'visual aid' from beside his piano, said my name (pronounced my last name incorrectly!LOL!!!) and proceeded to use that visual aid as part of his story that proceeded the song "Jesus Was an Only Son".  And he continued to use that poster for the rest of the Devils and Dust tour!
Five????  Downbound Train, Lucky Town, Because the Nite, Thunder Road, Backstreets.

Favorite memory.

Begging five friends to go and see Bruce in Little Rock AR. for the Born to Run tour. They declined. I payed their way, and he played to a house of about 300 ( yes 300 ) for 2.5 hours. They all became fans.
What was the inspiration for the song " Lost In The Flood" My personal favorite....
All time favourite Bruce songs:
Drive All Night
New York City Serenade
Incident
Born To Run
Jungleland
For You
Something In The Night
Janey Don't You Lose Heart
4th Of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)
When You're Alone

Okay I could name another few dozen....

One of my all time favourite Bruce memories....Giants Stadium, July 24 2003.  My whole family (me, my husband, our 4 kids, ages 17, 10, 8 and 3) drove to Jersey from Northern Ontario (12 hour drive) to take part in what just happens to be the greatest summer of my life, from tailgating in the parking lot, meeting some great people, playing ball hockey all afternoon, taking the kids to play at the makeshift amusement park, and then heading into the stadium for the concert.
We had the infamous section 108 seats (kind of bad view) and were quickly upgraded to the floor!  We couldn't believe our luck.....one of the most memorable parts of all of this was just looking up at the crowd.   Our youngest (the only boy) was only three and already a tremendous Bruce fan, going as far as carrying his little yellow plastic guitar on his back that whole day(except during his pre-show nap)....as the lights went down, and the band started playing, our son insisted his Dad hold him on his shoulders and he went crazy playing his guitar along with Bruce, for the whole THREE HOUR SHOW!  He had people in complete shock all around us, high fiving him.....by the end of the night, the lighting guys, who were directly behind us the whole night, were just amazed at our son and how much he loved the show, and one of them came over to us at the end of the show and handed me Bruce's set list for the night, telling me  "This is for the boy because I have never seen anythng like it"!
We went on to see three more shows in Jersey and the final two in New York, where our kids got to see Bob Dylan up on stage with Bruce!  What more could we ask for??
By the end of that final concert, our little boy had completely lost his voice from singing so loudly....as we drove away that night, over the bridge, heading out of the city, that three year old boy, in his hoarse voice, said "Bye bye New York"....I will bever forget the feeling I had, knowing we would never have this moment again, that our kids would all be older and things will have changed the next time Bruce and his band went out on tour.
Sure enough, life has changed, the kids are older, we live at the opposite end of the country but I think we're ready for another great year of making memories with Bruce!
And I can't wait!!
I can't pick 5.  I have a playlist of my favorite 20 that are NOT the obvious choices.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Thunder Road, etc. but there is more to Bruce than just that music we've all heard.  Get your hands on some of his more obscure songs (Tracks for example) and enjoy a whole new dimension of The Boss
1.  Growin' Up          11. Bishop Danced
2.  Lost In The Flood   12. Brothers Under the Bridge
3.  Atlantic City       13. Seaside Bar Song
4.  Badlands            14. Pink Cadillac
5.  Rosalita            15. Rockaway the Days
6.  She's The One       16. Zero And Blind Terry
7.  This Hard Land      17. Give The Girl A Kiss
8.  Leap Of Faith       18. Thundercrack
9.  Man at the Top      19. Murder Incorporated
10. Janey Don't You Lose Heart 20. Radio Nowhere

I want to squeeze "Youngstown" and "41 Shots (American Skin)" in there somewhere, but can't find two songs I'd remove from the list to do so.  So it will have to be the top 22.
I have been waiting for Bruce to tour as I have never seen him in concert and had it on "my list". I had a dream I was at a party and he was there and I asked him when he was going to go on tour. I didn't get the answer, but the next day I was just goofing around on ticketmaster and low and behold, found out tix were going on sale in 3 days!
I am hoping to hear Pink Cadillac (my dear departed dad always drove a Caddie), Dancing in the Dark, Born in the USA, Thunder Road and 10th Ave. Freeze Out.
I'll Tivo tomorrow's show and sit tight for the upcoming concert in Oakland! So excited!
My favorite memory was taking my daughters to their first Bruce show, the Tom Joad tour, in a 2,000 seat auditorum. They were 8 and 10. After the first couple of songs I spotted some seats close to the stage and I hustled them down to the seats. I cried...out of joy like I did at every Bruce show...and they fell in love with Bruce because they saw how much it meant to me to have them there. They have been disciples ever since.
Top 5 favorite Bruce songs.  That's a tough one, but how about:
Born in the USA
Trapped
Tougher Than the Rest
Worlds Apart
She's the One
Just one of many fond Bruce memories:  During the 1985 leg of the Born in the USA tour, while trying to get tickets for the August shows at Vet Stadium in Philadelphia, I fell victim to an unscrupulous NJ ticket agent (a scalper in sheep's clothing).  To make a long story short, I wrote a letter to Senator Bill Bradley of NJ and copied Bruce's management on the letter.  About a week after I sent the letter, I got a letter from the concert promoter telling me that Bruce's people had received my letter and contacted the promoter, telling them to give me as many tickets as I needed for the show and that the seats would be in the Press Box of Vet Stadium.  The evening of August 15, 1985, found myself and several friends comfortably seated in the Press Box, with an unobstructed view of the stage, rocking out with Bruce and the band.  And there was a bonus to all of this.  Having Press Box passes, my friends and I were allowed to enter the stadium early while Bruce was still on stage doing the sound check.  When we called out to him as he was finishing up, he stopped, turned around and gave us a big wave, smile and a hello.  I passed up my 20th High School Reunion to be at that concert and I've never regretted it for a minute.

okay having to pick five is just not fair, you should really let us pick 5 per decade but I will play by the rules.

1) The River (live version is the best)

2) Jersey Girl (born and bred)

3) No Surrender (Something about that song)

4) Meet Me at Mary's Place

5) Thunder Road

My favorite memory was August 1984 Meadowlands Arena, 10th row on the floor centerstage tickets.  Was to a few concerts (other than Bruce) before and many after...but nothing will ever compare to that concert...
I saw Bruce during the Rising Tour at Giants Stadium.  As the show opened so did the skies.  The rain literally was coming down in buckets.  Then Bruce began to play "Waiting on a Sunny Day" and no lie, the rain totally ceased.  I'll never forget that!!
I can only think of one good Springsteen song, and it is:

Born To Run
Top 5 favorite Bruce Songs
(These are certainly not in order and subject to change depending on my mood)
Lost in the Flood
Thunder Road
Jungleland
Working on the highway (how can you not smile)
Born to Run

Favorite Bruce Memory
This one's hard cause I've got a bunch of pretty unique ones but I'd say the first is still the greatest.
June 1993.  I was 11 years old and my dad surprised me by pulling into the Meadowlands parking lot.  That was the first Concert to Fight Hunger (the second was at MSG).  It was truly a surreal experience.  I'd been to 10 shows "in utero" but here was my first.  More than 10 shows later (spanning 2 continents) that's still one of my greatest memories ever and, as a rule, whenever I get tickets now, Dad always gets asked first.
Favorite Bruce Songs;
Jungleland
New York City Seranade
Candy's Room
Meeting Across the River
E Street Shuffle

Favorite Moment;
My 1st concert was in 1985 at Giants Stadium. I was an excited 16 year old. Sleepinng in the Spectrum parking lot for tickets in 1988. After the birth of my first baby in 2003. My husband resceduled his proposal to me in 1999 so I could go to see him at the Meadowlands, his return with the E Street Band. That is a true  fan and the husband of one too. A few years ago I was standing next to him at the Red Bank Street Fair, too awed to make a move.We have photos of our 4 year old leaning against the street sign at the corner of 10th ave and E Street in Belamr. He is part of my childhood, adulthood and beyond.
BBBBRRRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! One of the greatest poets and songwriters of our time. My top 5:

Brilliant Disguise (sad and beautiful), Darlington County (can a song be more fun?), More than Heaven Will Allow (my son's goodnight song), Badlands (rebel yell!), and of course Thunder Road (wish he wrote that one for me).
Bruce's songs are so different, it's easier for me to think of them by the emotions they evoke in me.

Relationships:
Secret Garden
Brilliant Disguise
Human Touch
Let's Be Friends (Skin to Skin)

Loss and Grief:
Lonesome Day
My City of Ruins
You're Missing

Hope:
Further On (Up the Road)

Glad to be Alive:
Out in the Street
Mary's Place

My first Springsteen concert was in Pittsburgh in 1981 -- I was 21. I don't think I could have been any further away from the stage! The show made such an impression on me. I'll always remember him standing on the piano and then jumping down onto the stage. He played so long and worked so hard, he went through several shirt changes and his jeans were soaking wet. I was struck by how he much he seemed to LOVE what he was doing. I've seen many, many concerts over the years, but not enough Springsteen shows.

I'm now 47 and I admire Bruce more than ever. What a talented writer and interpreter of this journey we call life.  I'll be in Oakland CA on October 26. My tickets are behind the stage --but I'll be inside, and that's all that matters!!!!
Jungleland is my all-time favorite Springsteen; it's a masterpiece from start to finish - followed by Meeting Across the River (that trumpet gets me every time), Secret Garden (there's something so sensual and hypnotic about the constantly repeated three-note synth motif), Because the Night, and Streets of Philadelphia (with honorable mention to Blinded By the Light).
How about "I'm on Fire?"  As a hormone-addled teenager when that song came out, I played the 45 until it wore out.  To this day, I get a little tingle every time it plays.
My faves all date to my days at Penn State when early spring days were marked by dorm windows thrown wide and Bruce blasting at levels guaranteed to earn a visit from your RA :

Thunder Road
Jungleland
Incident On 57th Street
Rosalita
Tenth Avenue Freeze Out

But they're all good!
"Empty Sky" is the one that sticks with me.  That is the song that undoubtedly takes me back to the morning of September 11.  That may be why its not listed as a favorite.  But it is extraordinary.
Favorite Bruce memories are seeing him for the first time in a tiny auditorium at St. Mary's Hall at Villanova University in late '72 or early '73 (there were about 50 people in the audience and he played everything from Greetings from Asbury Park), seeing him repeatedly over the next few years at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, Pa., seeing him with my wife at the Garden the night after we got married and finally taking my teenage daughter to see him at Giants Stadium the last tour.
1975, Sunday afternoon, about 4 p.m., East Lansing, Michigan, my friend Jimmy called and said he had extra tickets to a concert, did I want to go? Who? I asked. Springsteen, he answered. Who? Oh, yeah, he's that guy our other friend Eddie likes, don't care for him myself. Gee, I don't think so, kinda busy, gotta work early tomorrow. After some arm twisting, I agreed to go. Michigan State University auditorium, maybe 3,000 people, I'm about fifty feet from the stage on a riser dead center. At exactly 7:00 p.m., no warm up band, no keep-em-waiting pretentiousness, an announcer says, "Ladies and gentlemen, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band," and the curtain goes up on the band which, without preamble, launches into "Tenth Avenue Freezeout" and proceeds to knock my socks off for three solid hours of incredible music and energy and showmanship. I have not been to a concert since that even comes close to that one.

Favorite five songs? That's tough. My choices are reflective of the impression made by that first concert: Tenth Avenue Freezeout, Born to Run, Thunder Road, Backstreets (I guess the entire Born to Run album), Rosalita, Sandy (Fourth of July). One of my favorites is a song that's not Springsteen but I love the way they did it in concert (L.A. Colosseum, 1985): "War."
1979 Old Boston Garden, The River tour first concert ever, nothing has ever compared...
4th of July Asbury Park
Thunder Road
Rosalita
Born to Run
Brilliant Disguise
My favorite Bruce memory involves my second Bruce show with my sister, who is a HUGE Bruce fan.  I think it was the 2000 tour and he was having the Men in Black upgrade folks with bad seats who arrived early.  We arrived in plenty of time, in fact the venue doors weren't yet open! So when they opened, we went to our nose bleed seats and pretty much camped out with binoculars.  Then my sister sees him ... the Man in Black!  He motioned us over and you should have seen the look on my sister's face.  Not only did he upgrade us to better seats, but we got front row center!  About the third song into the show was one in which Bruce played his harmonica.  (See, I'm such not the fan that my sister is that I don't even know what song it was).  At the end of this song, Bruce did a little jump-kick on stage, then looked square at my sister and tossed his harmonica right into her hand!  Everyone around us was high-fiving her and when I looked down at her hand I couldn't see the harmonica.  I asked, "where is it?" and she calmly replied, "It's in my pocket and his spit is on my hand!"

Thanks for the awesome memory, Bruce!
Such a difficult assignment . . .

1.  Two Steps Up
2.  Nebraska
3.  Galveston Bay
4.  Thunder Road
5.  Racing in the Street
Of course all of the above, but I don't see two of my favorites:

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town  (Clarence, you been practicing real hard so Santa will bring you a new Saxophone?)
Held Up Without A Gun - B side to Hungry Heart single.  Very short, on getting ripped off on his first record contract.
It is hard to narrow down the list to five, but here goes...

The Promise
Born To Run
Tougher Than The Rest
Fire
The Rising

Like most people, I first got introduced to Bruce during the "Born In The U.S.A." years, but I "really" got introduced to Bruce in 1992 thanks to my Freshman college roommate.  My life has been different ever since.  Through the deeepest of lows and all time highs, Bruce's music has been with me to hold my hand through each and every step of life's journey.  My best "Bruce" moment was tailgating outside Giants Stadium in 2003, watching some of my closest friends and soon to be Bruce converts take it all in and then afterward turn to me and say, "I get it now."
Rosalita, The River, Born to Run, I'm Going Down, and Drive all Night are a few of my favorites. You guys are so young, the first time I saw Bruce was at Duke University about 1975, I had read in Rolling Stone that he was the next Elvis. I had to see what this was all about and man I have been hooked ever since. One of the greatest concerts I have seen to this day.   It wasn't long after that he quit touring and recording because of a contract dispute with his record company. Thank goodness he was able to work out his problems and let the world really see what Bruce was all about.
Clarence Clemons' "Jungleland" solo is probably the most amazing solo (sax or otherwise) ever recorded.  I get chills every time I hear it!
I Wish I Were Blind
Wild Billy's Circus
Growin' Up
The Rising
Jungleland
Quite frankly, five difeerent versions of Growin' Up would suffice
I have been a fan for 23yrs. I will never get tired of seeing the boss live in concert. I can't wait to see him again. My favorite 5 songs are.

BORN TO RUN
JUNGLELAND
SHE'S THE ONE
NEW YORK SERANADE
ROSALITA
If I should fall behind
The river
Badlands
Jersey girl (cover)
Further On (Up the Road)
