Countdown to Springsteen: Matt Lauer on Bruce

Filed Under:

In anticipation of Bruce Springsteen's live concert on the plaza on Friday, Matt and I sat down to talk about the man and his music. Here's our Q&A:

Q: There are a lot of people out there who would love to get the chance to hang out with Bruce Springsteen. You've gotten to do that -- so what's he like?

Matt: He's the real deal. He is a no-frills rock star with no major entourage and none of the trappings of what you usually expect from a rock star.

Lauer interviews Springsteen on "Dateline" in 2002

I interviewed him in Asbury Park a few years ago. He drove himself into the parking lot of the Stone Pony and walked in, totally unassuming. Just a real down-to-earth guy. He's not the kind of guy who is requesting to have only red M&M's in his dressing room.

He's the same guy that he writes about in his songs. He's a working class guy, a hard-working guy, the type that comes across most vividly in his work.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you remember from your time with him in Asbury Park?

Matt: We jumped in a convertible down there, and he took me on a tour of Asbury Park, explaining why it was such a special place for him. It's a town that has had some difficulties over the years, fallen on some hard times.

What struck me the most about our trip there was how the people of Asbury Park acted towards him. They treated him exactly the way I would have hoped they would -- people would wave and say, "Hey, Bruce!" He would wave and say hello back, and then they'd go about their business. They really treated him like one of their own.

It was clear that they felt a connection with this guy, that they didn't put him on a pedestal. They treated him almost like a friendly neighbor. It's so rare, in this celebrity-obsessed culture that we live in, to see people act that way towards such a huge star.

Q: What about your conversations with him -- what kinds of things have you talked about?

Matt: One thing we've talked about is what it is in his music that connects with people. I asked him about "Thunder Road" particularly. The song begins with, "The screen door slams/Mary's dress waves/Like a vision she dances across the porch/As the radio plays." Yes, his music is filled with broad themes like working class life, love, respect.

But it's the little things -- a screen door slamming, a dress waving in the wind, Roy Orbison's voice -- those are the things that seem to connect with people. He said that when he writes a song, he's trying to link up pieces that mean something in his life, hoping that they'll mean something to his audience, too.

So when you listen to "Thunder Road," you're really able to indentify with an image that's stuck in his mind.

Q: Do you have any particular memories of Bruce's music from earlier in your life, maybe from the Born to Run era?

Matt: In 1975, when Born to Run came out, I went off to college. My freshman year, you could not walk past a bar without hearing the song "Born to Run" blaring from a jukebox. It was the great anthem of my college days.

From [his first album] Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. on, I've always had a great feeling for his music. But it's really since I've been in this job that I've come to truly appreciate the kind of guy that he is.

In this role, I get to interview presidents, senators, celebrities, all kinds of people.  But the ones that I get the most excited about interviewing are my rock and roll heroes. With a president, that person is in your life for no more than eight years. But these guys -- Clapton, Springsteen, the Rolling Stones -- have been in my life for 30, 40 years. They are a part of who I am.

Interviewing Bruce every couple years, I've gotten a real appreciation for the kind of down-to-earth person that he is. And it's a lot more fun to interview someone who has intelligent views on important subjects.

We also just talk about our families as much as music. What it's like to raise kids. He was telling me last time we spoke about one of his kids getting their driver's license, and what that was like. He's a much more multi-faceted guy than just his music.

Q: You've gotten an early copy of Bruce's new album, Magic. First impressions?

Matt: I haven't been able to give it a thorough listen yet, but it's a throw-back to the rock and roll of some of his earlier albums.

Q: Favorite songs?

Matt: Well, he's playing five songs on Friday -- three new ones and two classics -- and I requested "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road." For me, "Thunder Road" is one of my favorites by any artist. And "Born to Run" means a lot to me from my college days.

I'm just excited to see him here on the plaza. When he comes on the stage, it doesn't feel like it's 8:30 in the morning. When he gets going, it feels like one of his great concerts at the Garden.

Matt, the boss was never my favorite but i will watch cause that was a great interview and i watch you everyday and maybe the boss will pick up a new fan on friday.
To Rose...don't worry Floridians....he's only announced 18 US shows. That's no Bruce & the E Street Band tour. He will be back and I guarantee he will be playing multiple shows down there.
I can't begin to tell you the thrill and chill that run through my body when I'm able to crank up the volume on any of my Springsteen albums.  It's amazing!  Although Thunder Road is one of my favorites, my all time number one song is Jungleland.  You can just feel and see the power of the story telling through this song.  Matt, you're too lucky to be able to interview Bruce.  I'd give my left _______ (fill in your own), to be able to sit and talk to him about the impact he's had on my life and lives of his millions of fans.  Can't wait for Friday's concert!
I have been a fan since sitting near him at a Nils Lofgren concert in Blacksburg Va. in 1975. He had come to watch his friend (now bandmate) play. And sat in the audience with the rest of us. I have never had the oppurtunity to see him live because of the criminal way the tickets are sold. His ticket prices are 69 and 99 dollars, but there is absolutely no way you will get a ticket anywhere near that price. I tried to get tickets at 3 different venues as soon as they went on sale. Its so unfair to fans to have to bow down to scalpers to get to see their favorite musicians. Until the practice is stopped I will never get to see this great band I am afraid.
Talk about down to earth....here is a video where he just picked up a guitar on the streets of Denmark and played for 4-5 minutes.

I love his music, but down to earth, no trappings of a rock star? check ou his band's tour rider http://www.thesmokinggun.com/backstagetour/bruce/bruce1.html He may seem down to earth to a fellow elitist like lauer.
Hey Matt, Ask what the kokomo is in Sandy
Can't wait to see the show friday Matt. "Born to Run" is my personal favorite too. Keep up the good work on "Today".
P.S. Meredith is "hot"
Matt -- I was fortunate to attend the "Born in the USA" Tour at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas while I was in college.  I will never forget:  The concert was slated to start at 7:30; we were outside the Cotton Bowl meandering around, looking for our entrance -- assuming one or two backup bands would precede his performance.  At 7:30 on the nose, Springsteen was on the stage striking the first note on his guitar of "Born in the USA."  I was so struck by that -- no big ego needing to make the fans wait a couple of hours and listen to backup bands; instead, Springsteen was on the stage at the time the ticket said the concert would start.  And, of course, he rocked the house for hours.  As you point out in your article about lyrics in the songs, it's the small details that make his songs, and him, great.
I'm a jersey girl and though I love Bruce since my first of many Springsteen concerts in 1978(first row!!!!!!!!),Clarence is the coolest man on earth.
First heard Bruce when an "underground" station in Chicago, WXRT, played Greetings from Asbury Park in 1973 and I have been hooked ever since. Saw him at New Orleans Jazzfest on his last tour, outstanding set.

I remember the first Rolling Stone article on him with the classic line "I have seen the future of rock and roll and he is throwing up on the hood my car" after the author and Bruce went out drinking following a performance of Bruce and the E Street Band.

Bruce and I are about the same age and we have spent decades together through his music. Rock on Bruce, you ARE the man.
how's this for appropriate language. matt lauer is a terrible interviewer.
bob from granby mass you're an idiot, but entitled to your opinion. saw bruce for the first time at providence college's alumni hall just when born to run was released. at that time he wouldn't play to more than 5,000. also saw him in the worcester and providence civic centers where he blocked off half the arena to meet his 5,000 limit. bruce and the e street band was and is still today my favorite group. i live in florida now and am disappointed that there are no dates in florida. but isn't the released sites just half of his tour? shouldn't he pick up again after the holidays and tour the south and other parts of the country that weren't included in his fall tour?
MY BOYFRIEND IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BRUCE FANS EVER, AND THE KNOWLEDGE HE HAS ON HIM,,, AMAZING, DOUG IS GOING THE THE SHOW IN OHIO THEN MICHIGAN WHERE WE ARE FROM ON MY BIRTHDAY WEEKEND THE FIRST OF NOV, AND ITS FINE WITH ME, HE LOVES HIM,,,
Hey Matt. My husband and I will be there on Friday! Coming from CT.to visit with the"Boss"My husband is a die hard fan. Can't afford to see him in Hartford. Thanks for having the show there! How I only wish you can do something to have my husbands CD signed! He would be in a daze for days! See ya there..
Hi Today Show! We are ready for "The Boss" on Friday!! He's is a down to earth guy!which is Great! We hope to get an autograph...if not a good time! The guy never ages!! Love you guys. miss Catie!!
I mean no harm!
Love the man. Love his music. He always presents himself as just another guy, only more thoughtful and intelligent than most you'll ever meet. You get the feeling you could have a dialogue with him about most anything.
My daughter and I drove up the Garden state parkway  to Asbury park last night the beach, weather and full moon over the ocean were beautiful! We heard Bruce and the E street band inside the convention center, we could see thru an open side door just a little bit! They were GREAT! We watched the band members leave, each said hello to the group of waiting fans, then the Boss and Patti came out and talked a bit to the fans before driving away in his 59' convertable corvett! It don't get any better then this!  We love your new music as well as the classics! rock on Bruce! Pat Z. from Little Egg Harbor NJ
Mstt - you are a lucky guy - looking forward to tomorrow's concert.  So many great songs - would love to hear Tunnel of Love.  Love that song. Saw Bruce at the Meadowlands with a million other screaming fans - it was great!
I've seen Springteen no less than 5 times, the first time in Detroit in 1978, never disappointed. Named my daughter, now 23 years old, Wendy (Born to Run). My daughter surprised me with tickets for her and I to see Bruce in Sacramento three years ago. Bruce you rock.......
I agree completely with Larry Cerone - Bruce needs to "Shut Up and Sing."  I long ago went to my last Springsteen concert when I was in FL shortly after 9/11.  You could walk up and buy a ticket in Tampa that night. I prefer to listen to old Springsteen stuff from back when he could almost sing. Oldies Cruises wouldn't be a bad move for the Boss.
I am a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band and have been since 1986.  I saw him and the band in Dallas the last two times they were here and I will go again if they come back.  I really understand the man behind the music.  He has a gift to reach that part of my soul that says healing from anything is possible.  Thank You Bruce and to the E Street Band for bringing my soul to life through your music.
If you haven't seen the VH-1 Springsteen episode of "Storytellers" on DVD, make a point to do so. His explanation of "Thunder Road" is simply incredible. Bruce's songs are the soundtrack to most of the past 33 years of my life. I truly believe that he is America's poet laureate. One more thing, Matt... I, for one, think that Meredith also adds a lot to the Today show (not just Al and Anne). Wish I could sit in on your interview, and am psyched for Friday!!!
Bruce Springsteen's music helped me to hold on during the rough roads of my 20's and 30's. My son learned to walk to "Born to Run". I'm back in another small town, teaching my son the saving grace of Rock and Roll and Mr. Springsteen is one of the giants. Would that his generation had such anthems, and that people like Britney Spears would subject themselves to his training and values.
Matt: We all sure do respect Bruce and right you are about intelligent! You too seem like the real deal. One thing thou, you've got me all confused, Mary's dress sways! That's what you said in the 2002 interview! Know what, forget it: Mary's dress swaves!  As lonhg as Bruce and the band do Thunder Road it's all good!
Matt...as a true, lifelong Bruce and E-Street fan, you messed up...are you kidding with your choices?  I wonder if you ever saw him in concert before you became famous...I doubt it, as he plays those songs at pretty much every concert (and I've seen him a lot)!  You are so lucky, but it's obvious you're not a real fan of Bruce's music.  Why not request real fun, crowd-pleasers like "I'm a Rocker" or "Night" or "Rosalita?"  You seem nice enough, Matt, but the Today Show should have let the true fans choose the two songs he'd play!
I just love going to a Springsteen concert you get to act like a kid again singing and dance along with the band.  It just feels great!!!!

Whoever thinks Bruce should be doing county fairs and Vegas obviously has not seen him play recently. Bruce has not slowed down! He is in excellent shape and still runs from one side of the stage to another & jumps up on the piano. For the Rising tour he was sliding across the stage on his knees and I would not be surprised if he did it again on this tour.
His concerts are full of energy and he puts his heart and soul into them, they are actually like a spiritual revival at times. He is still selling out venues and has the ability to control a crowd like no other nd have them eating out of his hands.
Vegas, really youve got to be kidding!!! He is not a flasy, fake showman, the type to sing the same song over and over again. He often adapts songs. Who else would have the courage & talent to take "Born to Run" and sing it as a slow acoustic version, making it just as powerful?
I first heard of Bruce around 1980 and went to see the River tour concert, and was hooked.  took my parents to see his Born in the USA tour in 1984 and they were hooked.  he is one of the generations great, moving songwriters and eveyone should see him at least once Live.  Please come to tampa this tour BRUCE!!!
On the morning that you announced Bruce's upcoming visit to the Today show, I heard you say that you would have a chair RIGHT ON STAGE and you are not moving! I hear ya, brother! I will be parked in front of the t.v. from start to finish on Friday. Thanks for being as excited about Bruce as we (those who have never interviewed or met him) are! Enjoy!
One of the most telling aspects of Springsteen's music is that it transcends the generations.  My dad (who passed away last summer) and I both loved the music from the early days, and when things got tough between a headstrong teen and her dad there was always "Thunder Road" to bring us together.  The love affair with Springsteen continued, and is porbably the only music my 23-year-old son and I agree on.  We share a love (dare I say "passion"?) for the music of the Boss, both classic and recent, and crank up the radio, joyously singing at the top of our voices together.  How many musicians can claim fans from three generations?

Looking forward to Friday morning and next Tuesday when "Magic" arrives!
An amazing presence is Bruce Springsteen and his music.  Had the great fortune to see him many years ago in Los Angeles and was amazed that he and the band played for not less than 3 hours with about a quarter hour break.  He's the man for all seasons.  Keep rockin' it Bruce.  You're much loved by all ages...and I know, I'm at 61 years young now, retired, and will be watching tomorrow!
I'm gonna try so hard to get to that concert, I've always wanted to see Bruce live. It's so nice to hear one of your favorite artists is as down-to-earth as he seems.

And I hope he listens to Matt and plays Thunder Road, that's my all-time favorite song.
Bruce is and has been the quintessential man in my life! He has gotten me through and over some major trauma and drama.  Everyone else comes and goes - Springsteen is forever.
Matt,
Love ol' Bruce, but the last time I heard him on NPR, I was less than impressed with his latest release. I still agree, however, with your nostalgic accounts of how he ruled the late 70's. My favorite was Tenth Avenue Freeze Out - what a great song! As much as I enjoy much of his music, "The Boss" can't hold a candle to Stevie Ray!
I saw Bruce at the Orphan Theater in Memphis during his "Born to Run" Tour. I was fortunate to go Back Stage and meet him face to face and sip on Heiniken with him. He was so natural, polite and geniune. I have always respected his realness. I hate that I missed his show at the Orphan in Memhis before the City of Memphis decided to destroy it a few years ago.

Just sittin up listening to the new album online. Sounds great. They all get better with time.Born and raised in Jersey now live in Seattle.Slow on the trigger for getting tickets this time around. All the home town shows make me really homesick for the old times.God bless on tour Bruce everyone stay well.
Matt,

If you read this, is there anyway you can convince Bruce to tour India
"If I fall behind ", "land of hope and dreams", I'd love to know the inspiration behind these and other emotional and inspirational songs among the zillions in his rep.
I saw Bruce and the E Street Band at the Houston Summit in November 1980. What I wouldn't give to step back in time for a day. We were both a lot younger then. Long live The Boss!
We are all waiting to hear his second round of tour plans, (please Bruce!).....which would include Kansas City and the South!
I will have the honor of bringing my 14 year old (guitar enthusiast) son to his first Springsteen concert on Friday at the Continental Arena.  I can't wait to see what kind of an inspiration he'll bring to my son.  Back in the 70's, I grabbed and removed Bruce's tie as he made a trip into the audience......we will not be attempting that again!  Favorite Song:  Incident on 57th Street
Woo Hoo!  Got my tickets to one of the Boston shows!  SOOOOO excited to see Bruce again!  He is such an icon and a great talent!  Love ya Bruce!  See you soon in Boss-town!  I'll be watching on the web on Friday!(Have to work! :(   Too great...my favorite morning show and Bruce!  What could be a better way to start my day!  Thanks Today Show!
Live in NJ.very close to where "the boss" lives..Hes great yeh yada yada yada...that we know..It would just be great, if he shut his mouth and played his music..No one wants to hear his liberal rants and raves about politics or the NYPD!!! He professes alot, but his family and all still live secluded and in private schools away from the people he professes to be like...JUST SHUT UP AND PLAY YOUR MUSIC..WE ALL HAVE VIEWS, WERE NOT BUYING YOUR RECORDS FOR YOUR VIEWS YOUR GREAT..JUST STAY NEUTRAL....
It's not just a concert.  It's resuscitation.  His music is filled with real human beliefs and convictions that mirror our own.  He doesn’t jerk us around.  He plays for his fans, not the ticket agencies.  He opens the doors to fans for rehearsals and the price of admission goes to charity.  How many performers can you say that about?  You can’t complain about the ticket prices either. Try seeing the Rolling Stones at $100 a pop.  I'll be at the rehearsal show tomorrow night (among other nights) and I’m so stoked! We'll be singing along with all our hearts.  A Bruuuuuce concert is a heart filling, hootin', hollerin', hard rockin' knee slappin', sports bra wearin' revival!
We loved Devils & Dust & The Seeger Sessions tours but it's been a long time.  I've got the E Street jones!
pati depalo and all the other idiots that posted about Bruce's "liberal lyrics" obviously have no clue what they are talking about....
Born in the USA is NOT what Ronald Reagan thought it was about --- Bruce's first album is NOT Born in the USA!!

Jeesh -- go buy Nebraska, go get GOTJ, get NO Nukes Concert, go get The River, go and get Devils & Dust, understand the reasoning of the absolute amazing project that was The Seegar Session Band--read some of the wonderful books out there about the man that is Bruce Springsteen!!!

Integrity -- Bruce stands behind what he sings about and what he generously shares with us.

What the hell do you find so "wrong" about celebrities who took the initiative and went down to New Orleans to HELP -- especially when the fuck in the white house proved he didnt' give a damn about all those people!!

Bruce HELPS -- but because he does not publicize every single charity he's involoved does not mean he is not involved!!

and "Patti depalo" what the fuck is wrong with you? OBVIOUSLY to protect his children he will keep his kids in private schools!!!
Think before you post!!!!

Just last week, I came across my ticket stub from the first time I saw Springsteen & The E Street Band in 1975 at Kutztown College. I had loved what I'd heard on vinyl, but once I saw him perform live, I was hooked. Over the past thirty-two years, I've added quite a few more Springsteen ticket stubs to my collection (especially love those road trips to Asbury). I saw him this past Monday at Convention Hall, and haven't stopped smiling since. Looking forward to next Friday in Philly!
I was in a halfway house, just a month sober after 15 years of kowtowing to my addiction to alcohol. I went to the library, and checked out an old cassette of "Darkness....". I listened to "Factory" and "Racing In The Street" perhaps 20 times each: ending, rewinding, starting again. For the first time I honestly felt like I was going to be okay. Now, ten clean years later, I believe in the "Promised Land". Bruce helped spell it out for me. God bless you sir.
BRUCE..your the greatest singer and muscian.I have been your fan since i was 16yrs old..I have never been in one of your concerts but it is my biggest dreams ever. Why don't you come down to the Rio Grande Valley down south in Texas..me and my grown children love to listen to your music..My youngest son now 14 always wanted to play the sax he likes the way the Big Man played his sax..but now he plays the baritone in school.I love all of your lyrics and  music and can't wait to get the Magic. My children has given me as gifts your dvd's and your cd's either for a birthday or christmas.YEAH I also have your book..my old time favorites are Dancing In The Dark, If I Should Fall Behind,Land of Hope And Dreams..all of your music gets through me when I feeldown..your music just brings me back up..keep on doing what you do best and never stop..BUT PLEASE COME TO THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY IN SOUTH TEXAS..PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
