Countdown to Springsteen: Matt Lauer on Bruce

Posted: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 11:45 AM by Dan Fleschner
Filed Under: ,

In anticipation of Bruce Springsteen's live concert on the plaza on Friday, Matt and I sat down to talk about the man and his music. Here's our Q&A:

Q: There are a lot of people out there who would love to get the chance to hang out with Bruce Springsteen. You've gotten to do that -- so what's he like?

Matt: He's the real deal. He is a no-frills rock star with no major entourage and none of the trappings of what you usually expect from a rock star.

Lauer interviews Springsteen on "Dateline" in 2002

I interviewed him in Asbury Park a few years ago. He drove himself into the parking lot of the Stone Pony and walked in, totally unassuming. Just a real down-to-earth guy. He's not the kind of guy who is requesting to have only red M&M's in his dressing room.

He's the same guy that he writes about in his songs. He's a working class guy, a hard-working guy, the type that comes across most vividly in his work.

Q: Is there anything in particular that you remember from your time with him in Asbury Park?

Matt: We jumped in a convertible down there, and he took me on a tour of Asbury Park, explaining why it was such a special place for him. It's a town that has had some difficulties over the years, fallen on some hard times.

What struck me the most about our trip there was how the people of Asbury Park acted towards him. They treated him exactly the way I would have hoped they would -- people would wave and say, "Hey, Bruce!" He would wave and say hello back, and then they'd go about their business. They really treated him like one of their own.

It was clear that they felt a connection with this guy, that they didn't put him on a pedestal. They treated him almost like a friendly neighbor. It's so rare, in this celebrity-obsessed culture that we live in, to see people act that way towards such a huge star.

Q: What about your conversations with him -- what kinds of things have you talked about?

Matt: One thing we've talked about is what it is in his music that connects with people. I asked him about "Thunder Road" particularly. The song begins with, "The screen door slams/Mary's dress waves/Like a vision she dances across the porch/As the radio plays." Yes, his music is filled with broad themes like working class life, love, respect.

But it's the little things -- a screen door slamming, a dress waving in the wind, Roy Orbison's voice -- those are the things that seem to connect with people. He said that when he writes a song, he's trying to link up pieces that mean something in his life, hoping that they'll mean something to his audience, too.

So when you listen to "Thunder Road," you're really able to indentify with an image that's stuck in his mind.

Q: Do you have any particular memories of Bruce's music from earlier in your life, maybe from the Born to Run era?

Matt: In 1975, when Born to Run came out, I went off to college. My freshman year, you could not walk past a bar without hearing the song "Born to Run" blaring from a jukebox. It was the great anthem of my college days.

From [his first album] Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. on, I've always had a great feeling for his music. But it's really since I've been in this job that I've come to truly appreciate the kind of guy that he is.

In this role, I get to interview presidents, senators, celebrities, all kinds of people.  But the ones that I get the most excited about interviewing are my rock and roll heroes. With a president, that person is in your life for no more than eight years. But these guys -- Clapton, Springsteen, the Rolling Stones -- have been in my life for 30, 40 years. They are a part of who I am.

Interviewing Bruce every couple years, I've gotten a real appreciation for the kind of down-to-earth person that he is. And it's a lot more fun to interview someone who has intelligent views on important subjects.

We also just talk about our families as much as music. What it's like to raise kids. He was telling me last time we spoke about one of his kids getting their driver's license, and what that was like. He's a much more multi-faceted guy than just his music.

Q: You've gotten an early copy of Bruce's new album, Magic. First impressions?

Matt: I haven't been able to give it a thorough listen yet, but it's a throw-back to the rock and roll of some of his earlier albums.

Q: Favorite songs?

Matt: Well, he's playing five songs on Friday -- three new ones and two classics -- and I requested "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road." For me, "Thunder Road" is one of my favorites by any artist. And "Born to Run" means a lot to me from my college days.

I'm just excited to see him here on the plaza. When he comes on the stage, it doesn't feel like it's 8:30 in the morning. When he gets going, it feels like one of his great concerts at the Garden.

I happen to think you are fantastic. You are blessed to be able to interview people that obviously get your motor running. Keep up the good work on Today. I still miss Katy alot on the show but you Ann and Al keep me watching.
I have been a fan since I was 13 and "Born in the USA" came out...my dad took me to the last "USA" tour concert in Los Angeles - it was amazing.  I can't wait for "Magic"...then again - everything Springsteen does is Magic!
They PAY you to interview Bruce Springsteen?  That has to be a tough gig...  Hang in there!
Bruce Springsteen and the E Streeters are THE BEST musicians out there.  It is NOT "just" the amazing lyrics Bruce writes, it's not "just" the intricate music that is created and performed, - it is not "just" the stage performances with constant interaction with the audience.......each and every member of the band are amazing performers -- AND THEY ARE ALL down to earth, friendly, nice people.

Being lucky enough to get tix to one of their shows, -- it is truly a Religious Experience.

I simply can not say enough positive, emotional, admiring things about this band.

The fact that they sell out arenas and stadiums within 3-5 MINUTES speaks in of itself.

I'm just as excited as you are, Matt, to see you interview my favorite musician, Bruce Springsteen.  I know that I would act like a total groupie around him!!  He truly has influenced music and has contributed some of the best tunes that have ever hit the radiowaves!!
I had the pleasure of seeing "The Boss" in Rupp Arena in beautiful Lexington, Kentucky for his Tunnel of Love concert series in the late 1980's.  There's nothing like his acoustic, slowed down version of "Born to Run".  He's the "real deal" when it comes to being a musician.  I doubt you could catch him lip synching on SNL...To the entire staff of "The Today Show"...You rock!
How cool and unusual to have Springsteen on the Today Show!!  I always enjoy the concerts with the older musicians.  They are the music of my life too.  I'm a big James Taylor fan, and you all do a great job when he's there.  With the importance of your jobs and the celebrity that you all have attained, it's fun to see that you all are fans of these guys too!  I'm going to have to get my VCR programmed for Friday!!
Springsteen has been relegated to an "oldies" act.  I saw him on "The River" tour which was great....but now he should being doing Vegas or doing county fairs....
Thanks for the insights!  My first concert ever was Springsteen in 1976, and I was the school photographer at the edge of the stage.  To this day, I still get goosebumps when I hear Born to Run, and others from those days.  I have enjoyed all of his music, and look forward to hearing the new tracks! I may have to go in to work late Friday!
Too bad Lauer gets to spend time with The Boss as you can tell he is a total middle of the road fan at best.

However what can we expect from a guy like him.

I am sure he is a nice guy, good parent etc.

But c'mon....

Matt, I made my 7th grade teacher take me to see the Boss, on the Born to run tour, when they were in N.O. He took pictures, and based on his rockability, the pictures could have been taken last week. One of the all time greats. I'm not sure anyone in this day and age is on a pace to be similar to him in stature? Any clue?
Great answers, Matt, and i am glad to see someone of your own stature appreciates the music of those magical times when we were "growing up."  Looking forward to friday...
bruce---  your   the    greatest----your   a    walking    intrument,   one   of   a    kind,    bless   you   and   those   close    to   you,,   Fasteddie
Okay, I can certainly understand you asking Bruce to play 'Thunder Road' and 'Born To Run', but you missed an excellent opportunity to ask Bruce to play 'The Price You Pay' live for the first time!
Matt,
Maybe when you talk to Bruce again you can find out why he isn't playing in Florida.  There are many die hard fans that are upset.
Matt, I wouldn't want your job because I know it is tough...really it is, but my dream since "Born to Run" is to not sit in the back.  I have attended every concert in our area, never missed a tour and did everything from sleep in front of ticket stores with the wonderful Springsteen/E Street fans to resorting to buying outrageous scalping costs, just because I won't miss this opportunity unless I am dead.

I was once red headed, but that red is now gray.

We have sat still when asked, we listen, we hear, we understand the message and we are loyal.  This is our religion and our hope for a better tomorrow.
Matt -- If you see this please ask Bruce if he's going to add anymore concert venues after the first of the year.  He isn't performing anywhere in the South this tour, and he didn't for the Seeger Sessions tour either.  Hope he doesn't have anything against the South!  He always sells out here in Texas, and I'm certainly hoping he'll add Dallas to the next leg of his tour if there is one.
I'm stoked Bruce Springsteen is still making and putting out good music. I will admit that I wasn't a huge fan until I saw him live at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. That performance still ranks at the top of my "best live shows" list, and probably always will. Since then I've acquired all of his albums and could listen to them over and over again. Good work Boss!
Matt,

I just had a conversation with my Dad about music.  More specifically, how some people simply enjoy music, while others are much more emotionally invested.  Music has the power to stir the soul, and Springsteen's music has stirred mine for 30+ years.
Matt - great tribute to the all time best rock singer.  If anyone doubts Springsteen's sincerity or hard work ethic, they have NOT been to one of his shows in the past 30 years.  The guy gives 150% on the stage as well as his band and you are taken to places unknown while listening to his music.  Can't wait to see him on Today again. Keep rockin' Bruce!
I can't wait ..here's my story.

Once upon a time there were 2 girls named Wendy who met in middle School in 1974 and became friends for life.

Back in 1975, it was the dark ages- no Ipods, Internet or Compact Disc.
But we did have the WNEW FM Radio with Dave Herman , Scott Muni , Alision Steele and lots of other great DJ's'

WNEW introduced us to Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Born to Run came out, It was our anthem song about surviving high school & growing up in a small town. And our name was in it.

Wendy & I are still " Born to Run". Of course our running, is to schools, work and all the activities our young children can fit in a day.

After years of saying we would get together, we decided it was time for US to do something for ourselves.

Wendy is flying in from Florida & we are staying in NYC for three days.
We will laugh, giggle & cry .
And we'll probably pull an all nighter on Thursday, so we can see Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band at the Today Show On NBC on September 28 2007 .
Great interview, Matt.  Now I've got to remember to set my old VCR timer for Friday!  My memories go back to Pittsburgh and the River tour.  A four-hour concert that ended after midnight, and we walked out into the freezing December cold with our jackets open, sweating like crazy!  That was one week before Lennon was shot...
I think he is one of the greatest all time entainers out there.  He really just seems like a regular guy and does not have a ego like so many others and really does seem to be down to earth and like a normal person you would want to have as your friend. I continue to enjoy his music and have been a fan for a long time. Keep up the good music and entaining Bruce!
Matt, if you were any kind of Bruce fan you would have requested 'Kitty's Back'!  :-)
COUNTY FAIR? ARE YOU FOR REAL?STOP HANGING WITH MICHAEL VICK
I was fortunate enough to see Bruce in the early 70's at Grady Gammage auditorium at Arizona State University. He had the third balcony swaying in time to the music so intently it damaged the support structure of the balcony. My newlywed wife and I watched part of the show from the wings for fear the balcony would collapse under the stress.
And yes, in the audience we saw "all the little pretties raise their hands!"  If his show on Friday is even half as exciting as the two previous times I have seen Bruce and the E Street Band perform, we are all in for a great treat!  ROCK ON!
matt, you are one lucky sob...not only do you fly around the world to exotic places on nbc's nickle...you have interviewed on more than one occaision the one musician who in my opinion best personifies all the best things you can embrace from a rock and roll artist.  As you said, he is the real deal...what i would give to be in your shoes friday morning.
I've been a fan of Bruce since the late 1960's, when he had his first band, Steel Mill. I grew up around Freehold and Red bank where Bruce is from. Occasionally, I would see him at parties (he was a legend even in the Steel Mill days) and he was a quiet, unassuming guy, never flashy, who didn't drink or do drugs that EVERYONE else, including me, were sucking down! But, no one ever came down on him for being "straight". A true upstanding regular guy.
My last night in New Jersey, June, 1982, my going away party wound up late at the Royal Manor in New Brunswick, N.J. This place had 5 clubs inside it. Huge. The largest room wa the Rock Room. You could put 2 Stone Poney's inside this room. Four bars. Band was on break and I was talking with the guy next to me while waiting for the bartender. Band comes back on and says they have a special guest and asks him to jam with them. The guy that I was talking to leaves and jumps up on the stage. It's Bruce!! I've been a major fan of his since 1969 and I didn't even realize who I was talking to! THAT is how unassuming Bruce is! That, and all the refreshments I had that day! LOL! Point is, Bruce is the kind of guy that ALL guys would like to be. Honest, level headed, never rude. All around American guy. AND, Jersey's favorite son!
Like you said Matt, the E Street band brings back my teenage years. I think the boss was (and is) a big part of us baby boomers. I have followed every step he has taken. We love you Bruce, thanks for being apart of us and the USA!!!!
Matt,
From the days of PM Magazine in RI to talkin" with the man who no one can fill his shoes..great job...And for the guy who says Bruce should be doing county fairs...yeah right..NOT!!!!
I discovered Springsteen in 1978. Hearing his music brings me right back to High School and College.  There are so few true performers around that haven't gone through "packaging and production" in order to  apeal to the lowest common denominator of the masses.  I'll have to pay through the nose for tix but for memories of a lifetime, it's worth it.  Looking forward to the show on Friday. Keep on rockin'
Hey Matt... I'm just as excited to see Bruce as you are my friend.  Needless to say I got tix to see him at the Garden and at Contintental Arena next month - I can't wait!!!!!!!!
I'm originally from St. Louis and now live in Kyoto. A few weeks ago I met a guy from New Jersey who lives nearby, and as we talked about where we grew up, we discovered that we attended the exact same Bruce concert in St. Louis 27 years ago.  We both remembered the show in such amazing detail after all this time (they took everyone by surprise by opening with Born to Run), and we felt an immediate bond.  That's the MAGIC of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.  Come to see us in Japan, Bruce!
Amen, we need Bruce to play Orlando, Fl. Clapton sold out, so will Bruce. Rock On!!!
I can't even begin to say how jealous I am of the Today show crew and all the folks that will be on the plaza Friday morning to hear Bruce and the band. I would give anything to be there!  But similar to a Bruce tune, I'm a working mom of two 'in baltimore jack,' and will DVR the show so I can catch it Friday evening.  Enjoy!!!
I am pretty much a Bruce fanatic.  I have seen him in concert no less than 50 times, beginning with front row seats at the LA Sports arena in 1981. Pre-Cortney Cox, Bruce plucked me from my seta and danced with me to Sherry Darling (remember that one?!) My ticket cost $12.50!! And you had to send for them via mail order. No joke! We moved to NJ 2 years ago, and I went to the Devils and Dust show at the Meadowlands and am happy to say I did score tickets for one of the upcoming shows. Still calling Ticketmaster every 2 hours to try to get tix to the rehearsal on Friday!  The Boss & his music does this to you!!
Good job Matt.  I used to work for Cats on a Smooth Surface and had my share of interaction with the Boss.  One on one you see the man.  Onstage you see the God.
To Bob from MA- An oldies act? Check out the setlists from 2003
and the setlists from the rehearsal shows. Sounds like that 1980
River Tour left you in the 80s!
Matt,
I love you and Bruce!  You are both "regular guys" and you both could come to my home and I would entertain you as though you were my own family or friends.  Looking so forward to Friday.
Matt, you Al and Ann do a GREAT job!  Thanks much.
Matt

Thank goodness that I have a day off from work to watch this legend of a guy....Bruce
You are a very lucky guy!
Bonnie -  Galveston,Texas
Bruce used to be a genius but lost his way somewhere on the way to selling out. As a teen growing up at the shore I remember his shows at the Carlton and the Pony....when the music was all taht seemed to matter, but like many others (Penn,Spacey Sarandon etc etc.) they have become mis directed politics who abuse their fame by preaching what many don't want to hear. As a long time but no longer fan of "The Boss" I no longer go to his shows if I want to be bored by leftist dribble I can stay home and watch Bill Maher on HBO!
Matt, why did you request two songs that Bruce plays at every concert, "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road?"  Any true fan would have bypassed those and gone for something crowd-friendly but less obvious, like "Growing Up" or "Out in the Street."  You're so fortunate to be in the position you're in with Bruce, and I love watching you every day, but you bombed on your song choices.  You should have let the lifelong fans vote!
I have to thank a wonderful man I dated. not knowing he's a huge Bruce fan, I mentioned to him, it has been my dream to one day see Bruce in concert. To my surprise he took me to not one but two of Bruce's concerts. I was over my head with joy.
E.O., Hollywood, CA
Matt,
Great interview with Bruce Springsteen.  I could see how you two hit it off, both very down to earth, quality type guys.  Bruce is a fantasic musican, but what a great compliment you paid him - "not on a pedestal" and "a friendly neighbor."  I also see you (Matt) in the same way, a type of guy you could just sit and chat with about your job, family and life.

Looking forward to the concert on Friday.  You are doing a great job on Today Show, just wonder how long they will be able to keep you.
my favorite bruce song is thunder road
i love bruce! i saw him first, (3 different shows) on the best tour ever, (darkness tour, 78-79). i have "born to run" tatooed on my bicep. ( to bad i'm 55 lbs overweight now, it takes something away.)i have seen him over ten times, the last being the great seeger session tour. unfortunately he has priced me out of his latest tour. 95.00 for a, non nosebleed, can't see him, seat is out of my league. a total bummer cause i can sense something special this time around. i am sure he will do more than just"not dissappoint".

               m. adams
                 whitman, ma.
saw his show in '85 at the Olympic Stadium in Munich
it was sold out in the US
bought a ticket at the door...worked my way to the front
we were not in the US, but for a few hours that night we were "home"
Anybody who thinks Bruce Springsteen should be "relegated to an oldies act" (as one writer commented) obviously hasn't lived long enough to know better.  See who remembers Justin Timberlake or Puff Daddy in 20 or 30 years.
Springsteen is a trusted friend to many of us. His music in some very real ways, is the sound track of our lives. Highs, lows, divorce, job loss.... Real issues that us "Johnny lunch bucket types" face in REAL life.
I am an 8 month pregnant woman with 3 small children and have waited forever for Springsteen to play in my area. Now that he is coming to Philly, I wont be able to go! ( The excitement would probably throw me into labor!!) I will watch from my T.V. on Friday, on the edge of my seat, wishing he would play all the classics like "Im on Fire"
