Barry Bonds's Home Run Ball: The Verdict

Posted: Wednesday, September 26, 2007 8:50 AM by Dan Fleschner
Filed Under:

This morning, fashion designer Marc Ecko -- the guy who bought Barry Bonds's 756th home run ball -- was back to announce the results of his online poll to determine the fate of the ball. WATCH VIDEO

He paid more than $750,000 for the ball and asked people to go to vote756.com to determine what he should do with the ball:

a) Bestow It -- give the ball to the National Baseball Hall of Fame

b) Brand It -- branding the ball with an asterisk before giving it to the Hall of Fame

c) Banish It -- put the ball on a rocket and send it into space

More than 10 million people voted and they opted to...brand it with an asterisk. Here are the complete results:

Brand It -- 47%
Bestow It -- 34%
Banish It -- 19%

Ecko said he'll be giving the ball to the people in Cooperstown "soon," so you'll be able to visit the ball -- with an asterisk.

My Q&A with him last week generated debates among commenters over what Ecko should do with the ball and whether he was just seeking publicity. Some applauded his decision to turn over the choice to the public and others called him "transparent and lame" and said the whole thing was "a waste of money."

I think Ecko was genuinely excited by the prospect of turning over the decision to the public, and he clearly has no regrets about spending more than $750,000 to buy the ball. (Plus I assume his donation of the ball to the Hall of Fame will be tax deductible -- maybe an accountant can comment on that.)

For Ecko, it was a win-win: although he didn't talk about his company, he got himself on TODAY a couple times, and that's never a bad thing in the publicity department.

Shame on you NBC, shame on you.

Okay People, let's all get real here. Steroids DO NOT GUARANTEE HOME RUNS. If he took them or did NOT take them, the man still has to be able to exhibit timing and skills to hit a home run. Maybe, if he took them, it may have helped him in the STRENGTH department, but steroids DO NOT Guarantee HOME RUNS by themselves. So, let us all PLEASE put this in perspective. I think the ball should have been put into the hall of fame INTACT. The ball is an innocent player in the game !! And NOW you know the REST of the STORY.
I think the vote and determination are very appropriate. Also think the story is as well. Who on Today does not like publicity? I mean really. I think the publicity comparison is in poor taste considering the obvious bolster, (yep publicity), Matt gave to UGh Bill O'Reilly this morning. Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt, Matt I was so disappoined. Some of us out here can and do think for themselves. But gee thanks for the suggestive push.
THIS SAYS IT ALL: Even though baseball did not until 2004 begin penalizing players for drug use and did not have a policy on performance-enhancing drugs at all until 2002.  He did nothing wrong.
As far as I am concerned this man is an idiot.  Steroid use in sports has been ignored by the powers that be as there is always a possibility it makes them more money. If they had wanted to stop it, they would have set up rigid testing long ago.  There is no way to know who has been using stroids and have many performances and "records" it has affected.  Let history tell the story.  The ball should be left alone and put into the HOF as is.  For this man to make a petty self indulgent thing out of it, is wrong.
It is not his place to decide that a piece of history should be defaced because he thinks that Barry used steroids, and that use of steroids allowed him to break the record.  That is like saying if he was using steroids he too could break Hank's record.
This is just an ego trip for him nothing more, and I hope that the Hall of Fame does not accept a ball that has been defaced in this manner.
Dublin.  If I could hit the ball perfectly everytime; I would still fall short of a homerun everytime, because I lack the power needed.  The drugs were critical to his performance.

If I were in charge I would have stripped him of any records; banished him from baseball and reminded everyone that cheaters will always loose in the end.

(Cheating broke the USA when Bush stole the 2000 election, and now cheating can buy you fame.)
The public has spoken.Thank you Mark Ecko. We, the people are sending a message to all baseball players that this American pastime should be played fairly and with one's true strength and ability. Steroids are not an American pastime. Let all balls from this day forward be branded as such so we teach our young children if you cheat you will pay the consequences.

Lets see.......Mr. Bonds has never failed a drug test, has never admitted to drug use and no one has ever come forward with any definitive proof of drug use. Hum......... The 99.9% of morons, racist and out right idiots who voted to have an asterisk placed on this historic baseball give credence to the saying ( IF YOU PLACE A MONKEY IN CHARGE ( Mr. Ecko) HE WILL SPUR TEN MILLION MONKEYS TO FOLLOW. But given what has been going on in America over the past six years this I guess this is par for the course. Mr. Bonds should not donate one item to the hall of fame. That way future generations can look back and see just how ignorant sports fans and sportswriters were during what I call the George Bush Jr. era!
Wrong is wrong.  Cheating is cheating.  Rules and laws sometimes are behind the times, and cheaters take advantage of that.

Bonds cheated and deserves no respect.
There needs to be an asterisk placed on the Today Show. You are the idiots for promoting this segment. If Cooperstown excepts the ball with an asterisk they are endorsing the idea that Barry Bonds used steroids.
What really prompted the pandora's box of steroids being opened?  Concern for athlete's well being? Concern for the sanctity of professional sports?  NO.
Concern for the IRS to get proper tax revenue from the companies providing these "illegal" drugs.  So lets put this whole issue into perspective......and btw, Ken Camminidiot deserves a lot of credit for this as well.....

Barry has never been proven guilty - yet here we are destroying a piece of history?  I wish i had the money to buy the ball from this jerk, and show him where I could blast it.

Long live the home run king!
Boycott Ecko - if anybody even still wears it

So many of us complain loudly when we feel our basic rights as Americans are threatened in any way.  Yet now we're seeing many people willing to deny Barry his right to be considered innocent until proven guilty.  I've never heard anything about definitive proof that Barry used steroids.  Have I missed something?
Bravo to Marc Ecko and Bravo to the voters!!
Mark Ecko is nothing but trash. God bless Barry Bonds.
Sounds like Ecko is crawdadding on the branding now.  Something about preserving it as an artifact?  Hope he doesn't wimp out on those of us who voted for the brand.
Know the facts.  Barry used steroids.  Baseball rules were not up to date, but wrong is wrong.

Mark Ecko is retarded. He is alienating a large percentage of his own fan base by his actions. He should stop to consider the affect this could have on the selling of his merchendise;which is aimed at urban youth.Historically african-americans have stood behind our celebrities right or wrong. It wouldn't surprise me to see a boycott of Ecko clothing. This could turn into one of Mark Ecko's biggest mistakes.
This is rediculous. Until someone PROVES he took steriods then we can have this discussion. Sure there can be a case made, but no one has produced a failed test. Until they do get of Bonds' jock (pun intended).

Does McGuire's 70 home runs from 1998 have an asterisk next to in in the record book? MLB is quickly becoming a joke. So is this what we have come to? Mr. Selig Bonds is the bad guy. The rest of the players are squeaky clean. Since you are sticking to bonds you have really taken care of the problem. Not!
Yes, you did miss something, The 50 pounds of muscle that barry bonds has put on over the last 10 years and that fact that his head is twice the size!!! He should be stripped of his title, it is very obvious that he has used PERFORMANCE enhancing drugs which are, as of now 2007, illegal.
I appreciate what Mr. Ecko has done.  He has given a voice on this issue and the larger issue of steriod use in sports to the people, which is where it belongs.  Baseball is a game that belongs to the people who grew up loving it, playing it, and learning about life from it - not to the money-grubbing execs who run the league and the irresponsible players association and their members.  Shame on anyone who says Mr. Ecko doesn't have the right to do what he wants with the ball.  Will there be a measurement of Barry Bond's head from year to year or his arms from year to year next to his plaque in Cooperstown?  Of course there won't.  But people like myself who watched him as a young child up to now know the truth - he became a totally different person and player going from a sleek member of the 30/30 club to 73 home runs in a year while using pinch runners because he's too big to run the bases.  The people know the truth and Mr. Ecko has given us a voice on this, and I for one appreciate it and look forward to a lasting comment from the people being in the hall of fame forever.  If Barry Bonds didn't want this to be his legacy, he should not have created the situation where the people have no choice but to make it so.
I'm just really ashamed at this country's continuous and relentless bashing of people of color. After hundreds of years of oppression and enslavement (both physically and mentally) Black Americans are still being robbed of their achievements by idiodic caucasians who still can't cope with the reality (which sadly has always been a skewed and downplayed reality of colored people since the formation of this country) that A BLACK MAN/WOMAN IS JUST AS EQUAL AS A WHITE MAN/WOMAN . . . and any other color of person for that matter.
When will this poisonous, hegemonic white power stuggle end? Different DOES NOT EQUAL "WRONG" OR "LESS". Stop degrading a man just because he's not the "white icon/hero" that this racist country was based on and start creating a true new "MEANING" of what "All Men Are Created Equal" was meant to mean.

After Mark McGwire broke a record he was not chastized nor was a question of his integrity or honesty questioned in the media and in turn in the minds of millions of his on-lookers. Why?  . . . because he DID fit into that "white iconic" box which the racist foundation of this country can continue building on.
Bonds' Home Run record should not only be praised for the name of the game but be praised for helping to destabilize this white power structure which for too long has brainwashed this country into accepting the mistreatment of colored people.

Barry Bonds is a hero to all colored people who have all been made to feel that they will always be less than that of a cascasian person.

. . . Let this outstanding man of color have his fame, free from degradation and oppression.
BRAND IT!!!  Put a big "*" on there to remind Baroids that his record will forever be tarnished.  The next person that comes close to the record, should they be drug free, should be given a chance to break the legitimate record, 755 home runs, as well as the not so deserved record, 756 home runs.  I agree with Kirk in Detroit, that if it were up to me, he would be stripped of the record and banished.  Look at Pete Rose.  He was banished for betting on sports, something to is a common practice among many regular citizens, whether it is legal or not.  I don't agree with what Pete Rose did, but in my opinion, cheating and beating a record, seems far worse than gambling.  Just my two cents.
the question to ask is how many of Bond's home runs just made it over the wall?  without performing enhancing drugs, his strength most likely would have gotten around 100 or so less home runs.  so yes, his skill proved his is a good hitter, but steroids got him the record.
If Barry was from Ukraine would Marc have done this?
It seems there are some definite clues to Mr. Bonds' alleged steroid use, such as the definite bump in power statistics after he was generally seen to be quite blown up from his earlier days as a fleet-footed and generally very good defensive OF.

A closer look at his pictures from the earlier days shows that Mr. Bonds was a wiry young man with tremendous strength in his forearms and very good eye-hand coordination. Much the same way as Ted Williams (521 career HR and he took a few years off to serve his nation as a fighter pilot), Joe DiMaggio (hitting streak over 56 games, still to be surpassed), and Mickey Mantle (536 career HR, as a switch hitter). The thing with these guys is that, within a certain measure of deviation, they were all consistent, with no real upward break from before and during use of any performance enhancers. In fact, if anything, as the years and injuries took their toll, you might see a slight pulling back during their "mature" years. All were OFs right up to their last playing days, of at least adequate skills. And none of them blew up like Bonds did.

As for Babe Ruth (714 career HR), you know, hot dogs and beer are not performance killers in everyone.

I'm glad that Hank Aaron (755 career HR) chose the graceful words he spoke - and liked it that he hoped that someday someone else will come along to break Bonds' record (?). Oh yeah, Hank, as wiry as Williams, DiMaggio, and Mantle, weighed about the same on the last day of his career as he did on the first day. His record came through a unique swing which gave him the nickname of "Hammerin' Hank" and rock-bottom consistency from year to year. BTW, Al Downing didn't give the pitch to Hank; Hank got his record-breaker the hard way - he earned it.
George Bush made him do it.  Just like Katrina.  And, and OJ too.  Yeah, its Bush's fault.  Picking on Barry Bonds.  A role model MLB player.  Come on.  Next you'll be making disparaging remarks about Paris, Brittney or Lindsay Lohan.
That's messed up!

I don't care for Bonds personally, but this branding thing disgraces the game.

Hopefully the Hall of Fame will refuse to accept the ball.
Let's get real,  If you dont think that Barry was using steroids then your a bigger IDOT then he is.
Now everyone for gerarations will know the truth BARRY was a cheater!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Mr. Ecko.

Fisher Williams, Saundra McKenzie,Ryan Burke, Bill Mangham, John Stockton, Robert Keve, Doug, Dave dye. All of you guys are right on the money. If they give all of us "STERIODS" I doubt we will all be able to do that. So people stop hating.
Why is anybody even paying attention to the MLB anymore?  It's so far behind the sporting times that I can't even see it from here.  In other sports, if you miss a mandatory test, you get suspended for months.  They don't even have to prove that you did anything, you just have to miss the test.  If the MLB is just realizing that athletes will cheat to get ahead, then it's outdated and irrelevant as a sport.  I say burn the ball and burn Bonds.  I just hope he doesn't find another team to play on.
wow people need to comment who ARE NOT giants fans.... its obvious to see he was on somehting... look at the pictures of him on the giants... I talked with him then asked him for a autograph awhile back... he said no... HE WAS PROBABLY ON HIS ROID RAGE.. calling other ppl idots? its funny... hes the only idiot i know! he didnt want the ball because he knows he didnt earn the record!!!!! think about that one barry fans!
maybe Bonds and McNabb need to go cry eachother... or to someone who actually cares!!!
ITS NOT A RACIAL THING PEOPLE!!!! thats the excuse for everyone ... if it was wouldnt people be calling him the N word? but they arent so maybe you people should find a reasonable excuse to use... you dont see white people complaining when they are called crackers... some of the highest paid people in sports are black and you dont hear them saying they should get paid more but they arent because their black.. cmon now people lets chill and think about what your saying
Those people making accusations of racism might have a stronger case if the man whose record Bonds broke* was not also black. Just a thought. Personally, I'll take Aaron over Bonds as a role model any day.
Please! Arron did it with work and sweat, Bonds did it with money and cremes. Arron is still the king so play your race card somewhere else.
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS OPEN UP YOUR BIBLES AND READ THEM IF YOU HAVE ONE!!!!!! TURN OFF THE TELEVISION SETS PUT DOWN THE REMOTES AND READ!!!!!! HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE!!!!!!! LEAVE BARRY BONDS ALONE!!!!!! GET A LIFE WHY DON'T YOU!!!! IF HANK ARRON CAN DO IT SO CAN MR. BONDS!!!!! YOU ALL NEED TO BE TRYING TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND HOPING YOU MAKE IT INTO HEAVEN!!!!!!! GEEZE!!!!!!!!
The racist comments confuse me. People are angry that he that he (possibly)used steroids while beating the record of another black man. He's not supplanting Babe Ruth or some other white guy, he's supplanting Hank Aaron.
So how exactly is being angry about his drug use racist?
Also, it's not like the baseball world didn't turn against Mark McGuire when it turned out he was juicing.
I think people are angry, not specifically at Bonds, but at the last ten years of baseball. Fans feel duped and angry, and the last and greatest member of the doping generation is, of course, the person to bear the brunt of it.
The ball should sit in the hall of fame with the brand to forever remind the world that while great athletes who turn to cheating can become the best the world has ever seen, they will always be remembered for how they got to where they did.
the ball should be left alone untill proff that he used drugs the ball should be LEFT ALONE and i leave you with this throught " people do bad things and get away with it. if barry did something something wrong and gets away with it something needs to be done"
DEAR Alex Dohrmann, of Mill Valley, CA, the smart guy calling this a race issue, saying it's the white man keeping the black man down because whites hate black achievers... TWO WORDS- TONY GWYNN. A true black icon for all colors to respect, and emulate. You say that Big Mac was accepted as a hero for hitting so many homers in a season because he's white... Don't forget Mark DID NOT GET INTO THE HALL OF FAME. He cheated, like Barry did. To hell with them, and your racist, white guilt BS.

Grow up. Barry is a cheater, BRAND that ball with a big smiley face. Or the word "CHEATER". You want to see someone deserving of your respect, look at Tony Gwynn. Unless he's not "black enough" for you.
It can't be a black issue, unless breaking a record of another black man is racist! Physical enhancing drugs do cause players to go beyond what they are capable of.  That should be the end of the discussion. Lets give those who think there is nothing wrong with taking these drugs a reality check, for instance, you or someone you know works there butt off in a sport, they are at their peek, now they go up against someone who is cheating by taking performancing enhancing drugs, you or your friend loose, they are considered a looser but the guy who cheated is considered the winner, WHAT KIND OF JUSTICE IS THAT!? Baseball isn't man against ball, it is man against team. So anytime one man steps up to the batters box he is cheting against 9 other people plus the fans in the stadium.  I say to Barry Bonds and every other player no matter what the sport, shame on you.
IF MARD ECHO puts an astericno the ball and if MLB accepts it as such then we shall shun them both.
Questions for Echo and the Idiots
How many drug test did Barry Bonds Fail ?
How many intentional walks were he given ?
Was a ground rule double today was a homerun in Ruth's day? Steriods huh why is he still hitting homeruns when they have the courage to pitch to him ?
Dear Bloggers, since a certain someone with initials M.A. of Rohnert Park, CA can't seem to follow the freaking blogging rules of not attacking other people's comments . . . this is not a man to be taken seriously. And since he went there, he can expect something in return:
How can you say it's not a race issue when he's never been proven guilty of anything? And it's not about anyone being "black enough", that's just idiocy and dare I say it, "racism" shining through on your part. Of course there are the exceptions of black people succeeding . . . but why should there just be those exceptions? Every black man should have the opportunity to succeed without the contant torture and being picked at for "cheating".
And for the "white guilt bs", I'm not even black, you narrow-minded a$$. I am a minority however and I don't expect you to understand the inequalities that minorities face because I'm sure you've never had to deal with them.

Take some Ethnic Studies courses on the history of Black America, or even some sociology courses on American Ethnic Minorities. Enlighten yourself . . . you might actually see how pathetic your scope of reality is on the equality in this country.
I haven't brushed up on my ethnic studies in a while but I know any flax seed oil that can put on 40 lbs of muscle in your mid thirties is good flax seed oil.
GET REAL PEOPLE, LOOK AT PETE ROSE, HE SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME, AS SHOULD BARRY BOND.  NOW, PEOPLE HAVE MADE THEIR MONEY AND HAD THEIR FACE ON THE NEWS.PUT  THE BALL IN COOPERTOWN WITH THE NAME OF THE HITTER AND DATE. THERE IS NOTHING RACIAL ABOUT THIS. JUST PEOPLE WANTING THEIR NAME IN PRINT
I AM A BRAVES FAN AND  KNOW LITTLE ABOUT THE ART OF THE GAME, BUT THIS IS AWFUL TO BE TEARING UP AN AMERICAN GAME.

As a result of Ecko's display of ignorance and disrespect to baseball and his egregious display of wasting money, I am going to perform options B & C to ALL of his clothes that my family & I currently own!  We will put an asterik on all the clothes and banish them immediately to the incinerator and accordingly NEVER buy any of his products again!

Thank you for proving that some people should not have too much money!

Ken
Thanks Mark For letting the public speak. All you non-believers that think he didn't take performance enhancement drugs to hit the long ball need to do a couple of things.  One just look at his stats. How do you go from being (men's PEAK age is between late twentys and early thirtys) mid thirty's and start to hit balls further and more prevalant.  Two how do you grow two hat sizes bigger! Not to mention when the big guys started bringing down the hammer on performance enhanceing drugs he is conveniently injured and dosen't come close to the numbers two years in a row after the scandle. Everyone talks about steriods and Barry. I don't think he took steriods...I think he took Growth Hormone!  There is still not a test for it and that would explain the hat sizes.  I think the guy deserves to be in the Hall because we had HOF numbers before his miracle work out regimine (which it is just coincidental that his work out trainer is one of the largest Dope dealers in Baseball history! uh huh that doesn't have any correlation at all!). Hank Aaron was a consistant athlete who did it day in and day out! Babe Ruth was a large fat man that dieted on beer and hot dogs and swung a much heavier bat and did it! To put Barry in a league with these men who did it with determination and unadultered skill (not to mention without questionable elbow gear to crowd the plate!) would be insulting not only to these men, but to me and the rest of baseball fans! Let's reward our hero's and abolish the zero's. I will say this though Barry other than a performance enhancing drug scandle, you are a great father figure and i have never heard of you doing anything else wrong. I am sure Bonds is great guy personally, but the public has spoken. whether it was publicity, silly, stupid, or brilliant I am glad that I got the oppurtunity voice what I think should happen to the ball.  Mark Thank You! Barry I wish you well in the off season and hope you play for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays!  They need all the help they can get! Go Houston Astro's!!!
