Ahmadinejad Controversy: Let Him Speak

Protesters gather outside Columbia University on Sunday to speak out
against Iran president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's scheduled appearance
at the school on Monday afternoon.

It's officially a nutty time to be here in the city, with some of the most talked-about world leaders convening at the UN this week. We've got embattled Iraqi prime minister Nouri Al-Maliki, new French prime minister Nicolas Sarkozy, and, yes, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the president of Iran. As a result, we've got more traffic, more police escorts and generally heightened security around town.

Ahmadinejad's arrival has touched off heated debates over whether he should be permitted to visit Ground Zero and whether Columbia University should have invited him to speak at the school's World Leaders Forum. There, he is to engage in a question and answer session with Columbia students and faculty members later today.

Ahmadinejad has a mile-long rap sheet of statements offensive to most Americans. Among them: his referring to the Holocaust as "a myth" and his calling for Israel to be wiped off the map.

Beyond those comments, the State Department has labeled Iran a state sponsor of terrorism, aiding groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, is believed to be contributing arms to insurgents in Iraq, and Iran's nuclear program has been shrouded in mystery for years.

It's no secret: we don't like this regime. We don't like who they support, we don't like what they say, and we don't like the way they treat their people. Instead of improving economic conditions for his people, Ahmadinejad's regime has instead cracked down on things like the national dress code (more than a million people have been arrested for violating clothing laws since April). Such is the domestic situation in Iran, that some analysts believe that two years from now, he'll be voted out of office.

But returning to the present -- doesn't restricting Ahmadinejad from speaking here, and for criticizing Columbia for giving him a forum, run counter to what our country is all about? Aren't we supposed to be in favor of free speech, of having a dialogue about world issues?

Furthermore, how is this different than NBC or any other outlet broadcasting an interview with him? I didn't hear anyone condemning CBS for airing an interview with him last night on "60 Minutes."

When I heard former House speaker Newt Gingrich say that Ahmadinejad's visit to Columbia was "an outrage against civilization" and called the president Iran "a dictator," I almost fell out of my chair (truth be told, I was sitting on my couch and had no physical reaction).

First of all, the hyperbole is almost comical. An "outrage against civilization"? Really? Second, calling Ahmadinejad a "dictator" would be news to his boss, Iran's supreme leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Regardless, we don't have to agree with what Ahmadinejad says, and we don't even have to listen to him. In fact, I'm all in favor of people protesting his comments. But I think denying him the opportunity to speak -- and criticizing Columbia for offering him that chance -- gives him the same kind of treatment that he forces on so many of his people back home in Iran.

Some of these comments are just too funny...
I mean in all honesty..some of the comments are so stupid that I can't even retaliate because they're actually that bad...

For example:
"This is a slap in the face to the 911 surviving families, the military and seems absurd. Aren't we supposed to STOP terrorists not invite them in?"

Thank-you Lori West from Paradise Valley, Arizona..
Ahmadinejad shouldn't be allowed to talk because he is the president of Saudi Arabia; the country which the hijjackers hailed from..He's also a terrorist.  He invaded iraq and afghanistan killing thousands.

"What ancestor did he have in the United States that fought for his rights.  My grandfather fought in WWII for my rights to free speech.  "

-Kim Brown from Fredonia, KY
Damn, my ancestors didn't fight in WWII does that mean I lose my right to free speech?  + I never knew WWII was actually a war that gave me my right to free speech..And all this time I thought it had something to do with hitler..

"However it is a disgrace to our nation to give him access to anything else while he is here. This man is our sworn enemy! Would we have invited Hitler to speak at one of our universities? Inviting Ahmadinejad to speak is the same as inviting Hitler! "

Hmmm... Hitler killed how many people?
       Bush killed how many people?
       Ahmadinejad killed how many people?

Btw, people really need to stop bringing up WWII, believe it or not, the whole ahmadinejad = hitler thing is getting old.

However, I was glad to see some people post comments that didn't insult the president of iran.  I was even more content when I actually saw some people not writing four-five sentences of complete bs.

"We embarrassed ourselves today, the moderator embarrassed himself today, and the President of Columbia University embarrassed himself today. We stood up and proved, to the world, our ignorance to the foundation true democracy, equality.

This man was insulted when he should have been applauded for even coming. We had the opportunity to begin the movement towards understanding and co-existence between our people and our allies, however we felt it better to reflect immaturity and ignorance."  -Christopher

I think Ahmadinejad did a good job considering how rude and inapropriately he was being treated by the host.
I also think it's a shame that so many westerners (myself included) are so ignorant to foreign countries and politics.
Ahmadinejad should've been invited to a university in Canada instead.  At least there the hosts would've treated him with the respect any world leader deserves.
The USA doesn't deserve to be the hq of the united nations.  Many other nations in the world are better suited to fufill this role.
Its funny to read all these ignorant comments, why do all americans judge every country and religion?instead of facing the facts that United States our own government is the real terrorist, just like 9/11 attacks it was all planned by the U.S and not by any countries, just like before the plane crashed it already blew up...America is failing to realize that the world is not about fighting and causing drama just cuz you cant get what you want...why do you think america went to war with Iraq?Oil...Tell me isn't American the country who gave Iraq and saddam Hussein weapons and help during Iran/Iraq war???now america goez and kills saddam and takes over his country,Instead of being arrogant and facing the facts you people realize your getting fooled by the media 24/7 instead of facing the facts?Iran been der for a long time with alot of history,U.S just came to the map being arrogants not facing real facts about countries,Name me the country who put Mullahs and Leaders Iran has right now?U.S,Iran was a free country 25-30 years ago, everything was free just like other countries,Until U.S had to put forces and exchange The King with some Mullah Leader,so Iran can go back a century,How come americans and jews get all offended by The Holocaust? But you people fail to realize Armenian Genocide???and you telling Us It never existed and no facts???Do your history and stop Fake Media talks and educate children with the facts, and stop living like cowards and realize the truth from fake.
This debate is very similar to the Skokie controversy in the 70's where the ACLU defended the right of the Nazis to march in a community filled with Holocaust survivors.  "Freedom of speech must be defended even when the beneficiaries of that defense are far from admirable individuals. It raises both constitutional and moral issues critical to our understanding of free speech and carries important lessons for current controversies over hate speech on college campuses, inviting people to think more carefully about what the First Amendment really means."

To understand why we must allow even those with what we socially agree are reprehensible views and opinions speak, see the Movie "Skokie" or follow link to a book review on the subject...

All governments, ALL GOVERNMENTS, act in their own self interests.

Allies become enemies, enemies become allies when it serves their (our) interests. We all have our flaws and virtues. If anyone here is looking for a truly good or evil player...you will not find one, not one in the long history of this planet.

To point fingers is an exercise in hypocrisy.

I, for one, welcomed the visit to Columbia, because I'd rather hear and learn for MYSELF what Ahmadinejad believes, than listen/read what all of the self serving media, political parties and special interest tell me what THEY think I should think.

I will make up my own mind, thank you.
Russia- Attacking Iran Would Have Catastrophic Consequences
September 18th, 2007

Any US military intervention in Iran would be a “political error” that would
have “catastrophic” consequences, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander
Losyukov said in an interview published Tuesday.
“Generally speaking, bombings of Iran would be a bad move that would end with
catastrophic consequences,” he told the daily Vremya Novosti.
-------------------------------------
Catastophic consequences?  Russia threatens to NUKE US if Bush attacks Iran.  &
!!!! NOBODY in the US TV media even NOTICES!!!!

STOP the madness.  BUSH MUST come out & say he will just LEAVE dealing with IRAN
to the NEXT PRESIDENT.  There's NO HURRY.  IF ISRAEL wants to bomb IRAN --- they
can just go ahead & do it & Then THEY can get NUKED; NOT US.

Damned neocons "envisioned" a NUCLEAR "Exchange" (between US & Noth Korea) in
their PNAC document.  THOSE Mental MIDGETS WANT to get us nuked!  STOP those
SOB's.
Michelle Silvia, the author above, couldn't have said it better.

Judging from many of the comments on this board, there's a lot of over reacting and too much attention is being given to this Iranian president. If, he did say the things that are being quoted ( which I have yet to hear) I believe it is important to try and understand why he feels the way he does instead of branding him quickly as a nut-case.

This administration, the Bush administration, is a dangerous one and the information being released should be carefully questioned.

This is 21st Century we, as a superpower should avoid war and destruction and seriously meet these countries with different ideologies half way. And, as long as they are NOT committing horrific human rights violations, we should observe them clandestinely, thwart when necessary but, leave these people alone. If they want to participate in global trade then fine!!
Okay...from here, the next step is...fast forward about 50 years from now...one of the Iranian Prime Ministers' successors appears on Joe Six-Packs' tv, announcing the Provincial Governor appointed for your area. What about "the terrorists want to take over and impose their way of life on us" do we seem unable to grasp here ? One last thought...remember, Solomon showed off his country and it's riches to his future conquerers, too. These criminals must never be allowed to set foot on our soil again.
You know, him coming here isnt such a bad idea. Letting him visit ground zero is definitely a "NO GO". I agree and disagree with all of you. Although, here in person and seeing what Iran does for these insurgents is not ok. I mean, I have seen what happens at the border of Iraq-Iran and to be completely honest, ITS HORRIBLE!! Him speaking in our country shows him and Iran that we can be civilized and give him his time to tell us his plans and his points of views. Also, do you see what is happening, the media flips and turns every story into something completely different. Getting you to focus on the wrong issues at hand. It takes you being there to know what is really going on!!!  Plus, what in the "you know what" does he know about the Holocaust? GOD BLESS
