And I thought my family was big!

Posted: Friday, September 21, 2007 7:00 AM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Janet Shamlian, NBC News Correspondent)

Their home is large and lovely, but what I noticed first driving up to the Duggars house was the industrial dumpster alongside it. And why not? With 17 children, the family would need at least as many trashcans...and who wants to haul those to the curb twice a week? When I got the call to meet the family (right) in Arkansas, I briefly wondered about typecasting. I have my own full house -- five children under the age of twelve. A starter kit, mom Michelle Duggar would later call my family!

Inside, this home was nothing like mine. It was fairly quiet, even though everyone was home. They were going about their chores and schoolwork, and the younger children were putting a backyard trampoline to the test.   It was also clean; no dirty dishes in the sink, no clothes on the floor of bedrooms or stacked atop the washing machine. Certainly, they must have tidied up for our visit, I thought. Their grandmother later shared the truth that made me squirm: it always looked this way.

As Michelle gave me a tour of the house,  I must have had that deer-in-the-headlights look on my face. The pantry was the size of a corner convenience store. Let me just say, the guy who sells Cheerios is having a great year. The laundry room resembles a Laundromat, lined with oversized washers and dryers, and the commercial kitchen is about the size of the one in my children's elementary school.  Every week, the Duggars go through 40 loaves of bread, 30 dozen eggs and hundreds of apples and oranges. And laundry?  More than 200 loads a month!

As the mom of a (relatively) large family, I struggle with the juggle and constantly question whether I'm giving each of my children enough individual time. We tend to do things as a group, and I'm convinced some therapist is going to hear about it 20 years from now when one of them complains about never getting enough solo time. So I had to ask Michelle and Jim Bob how they managed this aspect of parenting. They never run an errand, they told me, without taking a child along, whether it's a walk to the mailbox or a drive to the bank.

As I was getting ready to leave the Duggars' home for my own, I asked Michelle about the bus outside, curious whether it was big enough for all 19 of them.  "Actually, it seats 21," she told me, "and some day, we may fill every one."

Do all 17 children have one mother?  Or are some adopted?
I watch the Today show everytime I get the chance in order to keep up with the news around the world. It saddens me so to hear about all the crime, hatred, abuse that is in our world today. Why then, would anyone criticize the Duggars at all for bringing into this world "little soldiers" for God? The fact is if all parents in the world today would give to their children what the Duggars are giving to theirs, the world would be a better place. It doesn't matter if you have 1 child or 17 children, if you do not teach your children to be Godly and to love one another as God loves you, chances are they will grow up hating, discriminating, judging others like so many do in this world today. I thank God for Christians like the Duggars.
What do the Duggar's do for a living that they can feed that many children?
Do all of your children get along?Do you and your children fight?
What kind of a job does Mr. Duggar has?  It must be very expensive to raise 17 kids.
I think you are both very loving and awesome parents, the love truly shines in your eyes when you speak of the blessing God has giving you.  The children are very lucky to be raised in such a loving enviremont.....however do they ever resent each other?  Or say I wish I was an only child?  Do the girls fight over clothes? Or do they fight over which chores they have to do?
Do the older kids attend Middle School and High School?  Or are they all home schooled?
are there any mulitples (twins, triplets..)? do any of the older ones go out w/ friends or on dates?  will they be allowed to go to college?
How do you keep up with each of the children's birthdates?  Is there a birthday every month?
What are they doing to teach tolerance and cultural awareness for their homeschooled children?  How do they encourage individualism and creativity?
Curious of how the Holidays are at your home, and is it hard to buy gifts for so many?
How can one person home school so many children who are on different grade levels? Are they getting a proper education? Wouldn't they get more out of going to school? Do the older children have to take care of the younger ones, and still have a childhood themselves?
We watch your show all the time, we love it , and at first i thought my 5 kids were a hand full, but you have the most well behaved children i think i have ever seen. I absolutely loved the show about going on vacation. Well my question is my daughter dearly loves your too and do you ever make appearances anywhere where we could meet you all, we feel like your family all ready. By the way ,I think mom and dad duggar are saints.
What about the environmental impact of having 17 children?  Are they doing anything to reduce the waste created by so many people?  What about human global overpopulation?
As a widow with four children struggling in today's economy, how can you afford so many children?  I know Mr. Duggar works outside the home, but are you also using your family's publicity as a means of income and if so, do you feel that this is appropriate?
Is that a typo or do you actually have five children? I bet working for the Today Show is a full time job, how on earth do you do it?
Do the children get involved with children outside the family? Are they involved with other children in their age cattagory?
How do you keep up with each of the children's birthdates?  Is there a birthday each month?
Great job on the kids ! Do any of your kids have ADHD or do any of them have any form of Autizm ? If so how do you handle it ....
What type of occupation does the Duggar parents have, that they can afford a large family like this?
Would they still have so many children if they could only afford to live in a two bedroom home?  What if they couldn't feed them all?  Would that make a difference?
How do they afford the life style that they have? Such a large house (with 9 bathrooms), and the storage is amazing. What does this man do to support this many people? They are well dressed and very mannerly. This woman wants MORE? Is it for attention, since they are on TV all the time? They must get some kind of assistance.
All I can say is this is a prime example of irresponsible reproduction in the face of world over population and global warming.
As a single parent trying to raise ONE child on a very limited income, I think it's appalling that not only do the Duggars continue to have children, but they FLAUNT and EXPLOIT them on TV.  In a perfect world, families have the nice house, the white picket fence and all that - but there are some of us who have to honestly work 2-3 jobs just to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table without putting it on TV and showing the world that it is irresponsible to have this many children.  How nice that Mrs. Duggar has the older children to cook, babysit, do the laundry, etc.  And all of this is in the name of God?  Sorry - I think God is frowning on the Duggars exploiting their children and their obvious lack of common sense when it comes to family values.
