Update: Too Sexy to Fly?

Remember Kyla Ebbert? She's the young woman who was on the show on September 7 to talk about her experience flying Southwest Airlines -- a Southwest customer service representative deemed her outfit too revealing to fly, and she eventually had to cover herself with a blanket during the flight.

Her appearance on TODAY received a tremendous amount of attention, including more than 1,000 comments here on allDAY.

Well, Southwest has decided to turn a potential PR fiasco into a marketing idea. WATCH VIDEO

CEO Gary Kelly apologized to Ms. Ebbert and released this statement: "Some have said we've gone from loving hot pants to having hot flashes but nothing could be further from the truth. The publicity caught us with our pants down, quite frankly. The story has such great legs, but we have an even better sense of humor, so we're going to jump out there and lower our fares to match the mini skirts we've all been hearing so much about."

Kelly later said, without tongue firmly in cheek, "We don't have a dress code at Southwest Airlines, and we don't want to put our employees in the position of being the fashion police. But there's a fine line you walk sometimes in not offending other passengers."

So we've heard from Southwest...have we now heard the last of Ms. Ebbert?

Southwest was right!  If she wanted attention, she sure did get it.  Next time, she should fly with the private jet of Playboy Magazine's owner!  She can fly naked and no one would bother her!
Pants make much more sense than a mini skirt on a plane.  But the deciding factor for me was when this woman sat down on the Today show set - she flashed her underwear for everyone to see.
I am amazed that this story is getting so much attention.  Earlier this summer a lady was kicked off a plane because her 2-year-old toddler was chattering and she didn't want to drug him as the flight attendant suggested.  That incident was much more disturbing to me.
It is sad that these issues have such emphasis in the news and lowers the level of substance. What is next?
let it go. . . What somebody else wears is THEIR choice not someone else's Ugly -- beautiful or whatever, if you don't like it, just look at the beautiful things that you do like.
If it's not against the law, and there was no policy in force when she bought the ticket, they had no right to harrass her.

I hope she sues hard, gets a big payout, and the backwards white trash moralizing flying waitress who caused this trouble gets fired.

Poor white Christians mooch off of Liberal Coastal tax dollars and spit hate in our faces.  Gotta love that....can't even run your own damn business without our money, and you insult us too.

I think Southwest was right.  I prefer not to see cleavage and buttock cheeks sitting next to me when I fly or have my children and grandchildren see that walking up and down the aisle.  I saw the segment on TV and imagine that the girl pulled her top UP and her skirt DOWN for the interview.  We never got to see the outfit from the back.  yes, you could see her underwear when she sat down on the Today show. It just appeared that the mother was an "opportunist".
The first time you showed the segment with her sitting down, her underware (crotch) showed.  I noticed that after that, the picture was edited.  If it was too much for you to show, it was too much for the rest of us to see.  I do have to admit that the males show more of their underware on the streets and in the schools every day.  It does look funny though when their colorful underware is displayed.  I hope they are not offended if I laugh.
As the CEO of Southwest conceded, they could have handled it better.  Having said that, what kind of values is Mom instilling in her daughter?  Not modesty, accoutability (for your actions), or sensitivity to those around you.

I hope this young woman doesn't cash in whatever dignity she has remaining by suing SWA.  That would be sad.
I'm glad that the president of Southwest came to his senses and also found his sense of humor. The company was founded on hot pants and pretty girls. Here we are in 2007, he was his menopause phase of life but luckily, he found his youth again.
I am FULLY appalled and outraged that tons of OBESE people can walk around with clothes that are 3 times too small with rolls of unsightly fat oozing out all directions. Somehow the sight of this is not offensive and no one says a word. But if you are pretty and have a nice figure it is suddenly offensive and inappropriate??? It's a good thing I wasn't the flight attendant on that aircraft because I would have been defending her!
All I can say is "good thing she was wearing underwear for this segment" because she flashed her crotch when she carefully sat down on the show.
I don't agree with limiting the rights of citizens, but I would say that I would be very upset if I were on that flight with young children and she was wearing what she wore.  I don't think the airlines should impose a dress code unless it directly affects safety. But I would hope that her friends or at the very least her parents would tell her that clothing like that makes one look trashy.
I would also like to know what businesses Sean of Torrington CT built and what poor white Christians have mooched off his tax dollars?  I know of many Christians who have built very successful business.   However because I am a Christian I would not presume that I am a successful business man and that all those liberals are mooching off my hard earned money.
I agree, Southwest has the right to make any decision and comments about their passangers to make it a pleasant experience for everyone. Kyla is selfish and cannot take honest criticism. Kyla acts like a terrible two-year old throwing a tantrum and wants to sue for not getting her way. Her parents should be ashamed and embarrassed by the way they raised her and how Kyla carries herself! Its unfortunate Kyla has such a low self esteem that she needs to walk around like a "street walker" to get attention and feel good about herself.  She's a "butherface" girl.

The way this lady dressed is not as upsetting as parents that do not control their children, or people that have bad body oder.  If she doesn't dress like your mother, read a book.
Sean from Torrington has it all wrong. Too many people "sue" and when did this become racial?  We have other things to worry about. Move on people!!!!
It's really hard to decide were to 'draw the line' in todays world. We've  excepted a "thong" swimsuit; allowing females to let ALOT show in a public serounding but turn around and say that this skirt is too short...? We also allow alot of breast to show these days too- was she really the ONLY ONE in a short skirt?
IF the airline had to do anything, I feel they could have commented to her personally; 'to keep her lap covered', to have not draw so much attention to her. To be a lil' more realistic...when a child is out of control, the airline will speak to the parents directly; asking the parents privately and politely to 'please control your child'. The airline will also speak to a person who has had too much alcohol to drink; to calm down and sit quietly. From what I have seen, this woman did nothing but board a plane and sit quietly. Why should that be so harmful? AND... because of this arguement, will every woman have to wear pants on a fleight from now on?  ...OR, it may not be a 'short' skirt, but don't PULL it up either... right? What's "short"? Where's all this going people???  :/
I have to say, for as big as her boobs are, her cleavage isn't even showing - that tank is covering her! The skirt is short, but come on - what you wear is your choice and like she said, it was the middle of July and she was trveling to ARIZONA! It's hot down there. I can understand people being worried about her not wearing pannies or something, but I dont think she should have been treated so badly.
I have seen worse on flights.  If the airline wants to set standards, just make it across the board and enforce it consistantly.
The out fit was too revealing, but no more revealing than anything else I've seen. This is what our clothes makers are making for the teens and it's the in thing. What else would you expect her to wear? SHe COULD have wore some jeans on the trip. She could have maken a better wore drobe choice at least for the waist down. I will let my duaghter wear certain things at home, that I would STRONGLY suggest for her to not wear out in public. I think she should have been allowed on the plane without a problem, but as she was leaving she might have been told to dress where when she sits down you can't see her underware, Come on it's all about common sense which many lack these days. (we buy whats out there, but we have a choice to wear it in public or not, or same with food, we have a choice to buy it or not. (Dhe doens't deserve any money, and no appology, she made a big deal out of this and drew attention to herself)
My husband & I just watched the episode of Dr. Phil where the CEO of Southwest sent an apology to Kyla Ebbert for the way she was humiliated on the plane. It is so obvious (by the way that she was set-up) that Dr. Phil must be great friends with the CEO of Southwest and wanted to do the CEO a favor.

First of all, Dr. Phil tried to get Kyla to say that she wouldn't sue if she would get a Southwest apology. She never did say that, but she DID say she would stop talking about it on TV shows. After commercial, Dr. Phil whips out an apology from the Southwest CEO, then asks her if she is done with all this. She said she is done discussing it on TV. Then, he acted appalled that she would even consider still suing Southwest, while giving the audience just the right moment to gasp and boo at how greedy he was making her out to be. I was falling for it too, thinking perhaps she was being greedy, but then he said he thought she should just "make her statement and move on instead of cash in and make it a pay day". As if Dr. Phil has never cashed in. This is coming from someone who used his fame to cash in like everyone else on dieting (as if he has any idea what it is like to lose a lot of weight or any professional schooling in nutrition). He was cashing in at that very moment, making it a "Pay day" for his own ratings and show by setting that young girl up to try to make her look greedy when he whipped out that apology note that he & the CEO of Southwest obviously wrote together. I'm not for frivolous lawsuits either, but Dr. Phil and the CEO teaming together to humiliate that girl even further makes me thinking she should really sue. They had no respect for her. On top of that, the CEO even made a joke about her great legs, as though he could charm her into not suing (insulting to her intelligence and not appropriate!). I hope somebody uncovers the friendship between Dr. Phil and the CEO of Southwest (they are both from Dallas, so it should be easy).
I bet she could get a career of some kind by doing what she did. She could get some kind of an offer. She's got the look, she's tall blonde, she could do just about anything. Just wait, she will be in a book or write a book be offered a contract for hair, clothing, perfume, television, shoes, maybe Hugh Hefner will call her. Someone will be contacthing her. She looks a little like Amber Frey
I’ve been playing devil’s advocate with Kyla Ebbert’s story since I read it last week. And I find myself asking questions which lead me to seriously consider if the airlines acted justifiably. The outfit we see Kyla wearing on The Today Show and in The San Diego Union-Tribune is now in its most conservative state. In all likelihood the skirt was higher and the shirt was pulled down so the public could admire the new breast augmentation. While watching the clip from The Today Show I could see clearly see the crotch of Kyla’s white panties.
Remembering this is in its most conservative state we have to ask ourselves to what degree could this same outfit be in its most liberal state. Is it possible she wasn’t wearing panties? Is it possible her wardrobe was inappropriate? This is a good story because of its shock value and because it involves a local, young college co-ed. If a 300lb man were sitting next to me on a plane in nothing more than a Speedo I would ask a representative of the airlines to address the situation. Is it illegal? No. Inappropriate? Yes.
If a passenger boarded the plane wearing a shirt with a swastika logo and the phrase I hate niggers, I – a white man – would be offended. It is implied that we as individuals use good judgment when interacting with each other. And when someone doesn’t show good judgment, as is very possible in this situation, we ask a representative of the business to use their good judgment on our behalf. If you go to Kyla’s myspace page, the first photo she chooses to represent herself is her in a black bra and black panties wearing high heels with a few friends dressed the same way.
What we are doing by giving Kyla so much attention for this story is encouraging some of the same behaviors many of us find nauseating: Litigation because a business refuses to apologize for using what may have been good judgment. Does every business and public place need to outline a proper dress code? If we keep flaming this story from the perspective that Kyla is a victim of big business without first giving the airline the benefit of doubt, we are doing all of ourselves a disservice. It seems to me Kyla enjoys using her new breasts and her body, in general, to get attention and financial reward: her myspace page, Hooters, the lack of wardrobe, her many flights via Southwest, etc… And that is fine in the appropriate venues.
She is making the circuit on as many of the media outlets which will have her before she ends up nude in December’s issue of a men’s magazine. But before we all feign outrage, I suggest we consider the flip side of this coin. It is possible she was dressed inappropriately. It is legal for a private business to weigh the circumstance and make a judgment. I would much rather Kyla’s stay offended during this media blitz because she didn’t receive an apology than for me to have to succumb to a detailed, written dress code in every public place I go. I prefer to use my own common sense when dressing, and would hope I don’t get pulled aside and asked to change my outfit because it is inappropriate or take a shower because my body odor is intolerable or stop using profanity while drinking too much or any one of many things which are legal but tasteless.
Kyla was on KGB 101.5 on 09/12 in San Diego. She mentioned she flew with Southwest more than 100 times last year. Why and Where? Vegas perhaps. Also on her original (below) myspace she mentions she is “retired”. From what?

I am not sure Kyla is being truthful. Rumor has it in San Diego that all she was wearing on top was the green overshirt/sweater thing.  If that is the case, then yes, she was inappropriate.  As a Hooter's girl she  is used to wearing less so that must be ingrained in her.

Comparing her to Amber Frey? WHat?  Amber had integrity and did the right thing. She fell for a pyscho(who lied about being married) but she was key in putting him behind bars.  All I see in the Kyla girl is someone looking for attention in 1. all the tv coverage, 2. Her line of work at Hooters, and 3.  The way she dresses.  (She's very hard & "used" looking.)
She's cute but being a white american male I dont think I'd be chaseing her and drueling on other passangers.I find nothing wrong with her attire. For the woman that commented, I bet their most likely obese and just jealous that they'll never be able to fit into something like the girls outfit. The person working at the airport is just mad and started a whole shebang mess for nothing. For the jealous woman, they make wax for those mustaches and dont eat 2 supersized macdonalds for snack time and you might make your hubby happy.
