More OJ Simpson: Q and A with the Goldmans

Posted: Friday, September 14, 2007 7:37 AM by Elizabeth Neumann

This morning we had Fred and Kim Goldman, Ron Goldman's father and sister, on the show to talk about O.J. Simpson's controversial book, "If I did It" which hits shelves today after a year of legal battles over its publication.  WATCH VIDEO

There are two large components to this controversy: the legal implications that led to the Goldman's getting the rights to the book and then publishing it, and the emotional and passionate fight that all sides involved have made over the the text.  I spoke with the Goldman's lawyer, Peter Haven, before the segment to hear about the legal situation, and followed up with Fred and Kim after their segment to ask a little more about their personal journey.

Q: Can you explain how the bankruptcy court's ruling on O.J.'s book meant it eventually had to be published?

Peter: When O.J. pushed his company into bankruptcy, which owned the rights to the book, he believed it would either be destroyed, or he would eventually get it back in his own hands.  What actually happened is that when the company declared bankruptcy, the book became an asset of the company, just like a house or a car or any other possession.  So the book had to be sold, and the bankruptcy court mandated the book be monetized.  That means it's going to be published one way or another; if a house is mandated to be sold in bankruptcy court a homeowner will buy it, and if a book is sold, a publisher will buy it.

Once we decided to publish it on our own terms, we had the opportunity to put a total turn on it - we took the word "If" in the title and made it tiny on the cover - so you really see, "I Did It."  We got to add a foreword giving our position.

Q: What about the fact that this book is...creepy, or disgusting, if it is true?

Peter: You know, this book is similar to a horror movie which is more terrifying when you don't see the monster.  Your imagination makes it much worse than it actually is.  The same is true of this book.  O.J. really believes he is the center of the universe - that's what you get from the book.  You are left with the impression that he is painting an inaccurate picture of Nicole, and that he is an idiot for confessing in this way.  He really thinks people will read this and say, "It's not really O.J.'s fault, anyone would have done that..."

Q: Do you sleep well at night?

Peter: I sleep very well at night.  The Goldmans have been victims without recourse for years, and as horrible as this book is, it is something he coveted that they took away from him.  It gave them power, and I believe it has transformed them.

Q: Kim, you have been fighting this man, O.J. Simpson, for over ten years.  You must think of him every day - how do you deal with that?

Kim: It's like having another appendage.  It becomes part of your existence.  Do I think of O.J. every day?  No.  I think of my brother every day, and the loss his death created in my life.

Fred: I think of Ron constantly.  I feel a natural warmth when I think of my son.  But after thinking of Ron, I immediately have the thought that he was murdered by a monster and my feelings turn to hate.  The two are sadly connected forever.

Q: How do you keep that hatred from taking over?  How are you able to be a parent, or a grandparent, and enjoy any part of life?

Kim: You make room for it.  We can't let him dictate our lives.  It just becomes so much a part of what we do - you have to find a way to compartmentalize.

Fred: I have a beautiful daughter, I have a beautiful grandson, I have a wife and stepkids and amazing friends.  If it was not for all of them, it would be a lot harder.  But I think Ron would want us to find peace.  It would do Ron a dishonor to let the hatred for that monster take over.

Kim: Ron suffered the most pain anyone could suffer when he was killed.  There's nothing I can feel that even comes close to that.  So there's really no other option, you have to make room for it.  People ask me all the time, 'How do you cope?' and I answer: I honestly don't know.  I just...

Fred: You just do.

Q: Peter, your lawyer, was telling me about the legal implications of the ruling in bankruptcy court.  What was that conversation like, when he sat you down and told you your options?

Kim:  It took more than one conversation, that's for sure.  When he told us that the book was going to end up published, we were kicking and screaming.  We were so torn about going down that road and we were worried about Nicole's family and the kids.  But as we kept uncovering information - the kids had signed off on it, O.J. would be getting the proceeds, we decided we needed to take something back.

Fred: The bottom line is that we got the rights through the court.  And the bankruptcy court required the book rights be monetized.  I made a promise to the judge that I would maximize the asset and have it monetized.

Kim: My father and I started a foundation - the Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice, and a portion of the proceeds will go to that.  Also, the children will receive a portion of the money as well, whereas when it was in O.J.'s hands they weren't seeing any of it.

Q: Do either of you sleep well at night?

Kim: I am a horrible sleeper.  I've had insomnia since my brother was killed.

Fred: I haven't slept well since Ron died.

The Goldmans are money hungry and I hope in some way their son can forgive them for their atrocities....
I do believe that the justice sytem in our country means if you are found NOT GUILTY then you are NOT GUILTY!!!!  LET IT GO!!!!  I dont know who killed nicole and ron and neither does anyone else....  Maybe OJ did it but Then again the evidence was not there to convict him so Maybe not.
Get on with your lives folks and stop making money off of these poor deaths!!!
I love to see pictures of OJ still enjoying life - how awful that he had to go through this.  Thank goodness that the killer had smaller hands than him or he would be suffering even more.  He seems like such a loving father to his children.  I hope that some day the Goldmans learn to deal with their loss and realize that pursuing a man who was found innocent will not bring him back.
Yep, money hungry vultures praying on an innocent man.  I hope Oj's book is a best seller, that these vultures get the stupid money and Oj can be left alone.  He should sue them for their continuous repulsive actions.
I heard that 80% of white believe OJ is guilty and 80% of blacks believe he is innocent. As a white person, I find it hard to find him guilty.  There was so much corruption during the trial.  White America needs to look at this and realize the blacks are not always treated fairly.  This man was found no guilty in an awful, public trial.  He served time in prison too.  He needs to be left alone.  This Goldman family is after $.  They don't look at all like they are hurting for Ron.
Fred Goldman has from the begining sought fame for himself and his family. He always been in it for the money and publicity. I don't think he ever missed a chance to put his face and his tears on TV. I have no idea why they keep putting this hate monger on TV. If OJ was dead he would have no life. The Goldmans only want fame and fortune for themselves. In the words of a wiseman, if you have nothing good to say then SHUT UP!

I'm tired of all of the people who act like they know OJ did it.  He was found not guilty.  That's what the trial was for.  He lost a woman he still cared a lot about, his children lost their mother, he lost most of what he worked a lot of his life for.  I feel bad for him.
I would have bought the book had the greedy Goldmans not got involved.  I will wait for it to come the library.  I don't want to give that crazy guy a dime!
p.s. had Ron Goldman been murdered all by himself without Nicole Brown - we would not be hearing about him today.  Although sad, fame and celebrity have kept the Ron Goldman murder alive.  Let us think about all those homicide victims who have had no airtime, nor newspaper time, other than a paragraph if they were lucky.  No book deals, no $33 million dollar judgement to go after, nothing. These people were murdered and they are gone. The only people that remember them are their parents, friends and siblings.  Let us remember all of those people who don't get on Oprah or Msnbc or Cnn.  These people need to move on.  It is becoming very hurtful for all the other nameless victims out here who will never have the opportunity that they have had to heal.
MONEY sure changes people's convictions, about 180 degrees.
Let's see....what about our troops in Iraq?  I think that is so much more important here....let's not lose the real focus people.
Exploiting their son? Get over it and move on? OJ Simpson got away with a cold blooded murder of 2 people and some of you want the Goldman's to move on?? Stop tormenting OJ???
OJ has been laughing at both familes for over 10 years and flaunting the fact that he is a free man. And to show how sick and arrogant he is he writes a book telling the world how he did it...what the hell are they going to do? Our justice system says he cannot be tried again for the same crime and the Goldman's are supposed to move on?
IF OJ felt any remorse at all that book would have never seen the light of day but he's a sick, self-centered twisted human being, but not to worry he will be judged if not in this life he will be judged in the next life.
People who make comments should get their facts straight. The Goldmans published the book because if they didn't, it could possibly fall back into O.J.'s
hands. If it were my son or brother who was murdered and the killer strutted around free, I would do whatever I could to take him down a notch. You have to
look at the facts, the evidence, the whole picture and
once you do, only an idiot could say he is innocent. A
man who leaves a trail of blood from the crime scene to his Bronco to his property to inside his home, up the stairs, in his room and bathroom is not an innocent man. He knows he did it.  Also the killer's
glove dropped from the crime scene to the killer's own
back yard. Let's get real here! And as far as the quote goes "If it doesn't fit, you must equit", have you ever tried on a dried, blood soaked, shrunken glove over top of a latex glove? Common sense will tell you it is not easily done. He's a murderer. He knows it. And a man who would put something so horrible in to print for monetary gain shows what kind of person he really is. I would never put something like that into print for my children to read about their mother's death even if i were innocent! Nicole once said if anything happened to her he would O.J. himself out of it and she was right. I can only hope that his latest robbery stunt will put him behind bars where he should of been all along. Being a great football player does not excuse
the horrific murders he has commited.
I would like to send my heart felt condolences to the Goldman Family, they seem like super nice people who obviously suffered tremendously from the loss of Ron. Since the trial brought no justice to the family, the only possible recourse for them was the civil suit. There have been some who accuse the Goldmans of exploiting the situation for money, anyone who has heard them speak passionately about their beloved Ron would know that is not at all the case. I applaude their efforts to hound O.J Simpson's every step, this complete and total outrage of a book he wrote was a poorly disguised confession that he should not be allowed to profit from. Money means a lot to someone like O.J, a man who is used to getting his way and used to a lot of attention, it's obvious he loves his material goods.
Hopefully, Fred and Kim will be a painful thorn in O.J "IF I Did It" Simpson's side to his dying day.

It makes me very happy to know O.J's "Dream Team" could not save him from the wrath of a civil suit, Try that custom tailored suit on for size Mr. "If I Did It"!

I can't imagine the deep pain that the Goldmans have gone through losing their son in this way. This truly is NOT about the money for them. No amount of money would ever heal their deep loss. There were mountains of evidence against OJ and his preferential treatment, such as a change of venue, and his slick attorneys made a mockery of our justice system. This book finally gives them the power to reveal the truth.
I certainly believe OJ murdered those people and got away with it.  But, sheesh!  It's time for the Goldmans to move on with life.  They need to stop beating a dead horse.  There are hundreds of others out there who have also lost love ones to persons who escaped conviction. Obsession will kill you
One of the most brutal murders of the century..I dont think you every get over it. It doesnt help when OJ seems to put salt in their wound. My prayers go out to this family. Just imagine if your child was murdered in the fashion they were murdered. I think I would loose my very mind if not for my Faith.
Its not about money it about justice and someone getting away with it. Truly  the goldmans are  a family I respect for their unity, diligence, strength.

How can anyone defend this monster after all these years? OJ killed two people and he must pay whether through public opinion, financial means or jail. He was found innocent by a bunch of idiots who are more than likely collecting welfare. It was the ultimate payback to us "Crackers" and these people are still thrilled by the "not guilty" verdict. It was a black/white deal and the "Race Card" was once again played by our less than fortunate dark skinned bretheren. OJ is a punk and he will be going to jail very soon for his Las Vegas stunt. He has no more money to buy the likes of Johnny (another jive punk) and Shapiro (less than human being). Hopefully this will be the last we hear of OJ the killer.
When someone makes the comment that OJ was proven innocent - I am in total disbelief.  I cannot imagine that there are people out there wandering around whom are really that ignorant.  Not guilty does not equal innocent.  Wow!
FOR ALL YOU O.J. SUPPORTERS:  WHAT IF A KILLER WAS ACQUITTED OF KILLING YOUR DAUGHTER OR YOUR SON WITH THE SAME EVIDENCE?

I CAN'T SAY I'D BE AS PATIENT.  THE GOLDMANS GOT SCREWED WHEN O.J. WALKED BECAUSE JOHNNY COCKREN PULLED THE RACE CARD AND O.J. HAD MONEY.

SEND O.J. AWAY FOR LIFE!!!
Let this thing go!! What is this hatred for?  People are dead, and that is really sad but if this thing is going to go on and on forever, when will the deceased find peace and rest? There is a judgement for all of us because God knows what exactly happened on that fateful day.  We can wrangle and wrangle with the law and solicitors who are just there to get all the money they can to keep cases open. Please let it go and let God give you peace
Oh PLEASE!!!!!!!!!! The apple doesn't fall far from the tree this family rasied a son who lived off of others incomes so why would any of you be amazed that they want to do the same.
THE GOLDMANS AND THE BROWNS AS WELL AS NICOLES CHILDREN ARE STILL VICTIMS AS LONGS AS THAT EVIL MAN BREATHS. MAY OJ ROT IN HELL AND I HOPE THIS LATEST CRIME GETS HIM THE JAIL TIME HE SHOULD HAVE RECIEVED AFTER WHAT HE DID TO RON AND NICOLE.
Most of the responses here show a clear grasp of reality and a sense of justice. But some of you remind us of the unthinking segment of our population; you're the kind of simpletons who found  OJ not guilty in the criminal trial. To you -- the generally uneducated and clueless -- I say enjoy yourselves and continue to look up to OJ...and Jerry Springer. To those of us who have a brain and children, we understand the Goldmans' dedication to justice and Ron's memory. To condemn the family for sticking to their mission is fatuous. They should be commended for doing what few people have the guts or strength to do -- follow through on a promise based on love and principle. Would you forget your only son so quickly and allow his prime-time murderer to golf in peace?
I use to feel sorry for the Goldman's.  Now I pity them.  Fred Goldman is a very bitter person.  It only leads me to believe that the relationship he had with his son Ron was a poor one.  He really seems to be a man that is torturing himself and his family because of guilt.  He definitely is a man who shows he was an outsider in his son's life.  Forgiveness is definitely not in this man's nature.
The goldmans (aka golddiggers) need to get over themselves...and MOVE ON...We are all surely over them by now...LET IT GO....no one cares anymore....
It amazes me how many people say that the Goldman's just need to get on with their lives. In my opinion it would be much better for their health if they could but is that really possible? O.J. killed their son in a very brutal way. I know he was aquitted but, come on. A majority of the people feel that the evidence against him was overwhelming. Now he walks free and gets his face in front of a camera every chance he gets. How would any of us feel if our child was murdered and the killer walks free. Not only walks free, but lives a life of luxury while the parent suffers everyday for the rest of their life. Getting on with life and not feeling hatred toward Simpson, to me, is a lot easier said than done.
I tried to read most of the opinions you all gave which you are entitled to, but I firmely believe OJ is quilty and if this was my child this happend too I would do the same as the Goldmans are doing, as long as the Goldmans keep on OJ's tail whichever way they do it, it will make OJ remember every day how he butchered two innocent people.
OJ was found NOT GUILTY-----------I beleve Ron Goldman was Nicole's lover! Remember she had drawn her bath surrounding it with burning candles when Ron was returning her misplaced glasses. I also believe its possible they were murdered by a drug dealer. Nicole's friend was a drug addict who had recently stayed there. The Goldman family just want publicity and money!
Two points to consider. First, while OJ was not found guilty, that by no means assures his innocence. The standard of proof in criminal cases is "beyond a reasonable doubt". The verdict must be reached by unanimous decision of the jury. Given the circus the investigation and trial became, it is not surprising that one or more of the jurors would have a reasonable doubt of his guilt. That's all it took. The standard of proof in a civil matter is "by a preponderance of the evidence" meaning more likely than not(even if only a tiny bit more likely) and only requires 9 of 12 jurors to agree on the defendants liability. No one ever proved OJ was innocent. Second, no one who has not lost a child violently or unexpectedly has any basis by which to judge the Goldmans, their grief or their decisions. You may say I know what that must be like and I know how I would respond, but you do not. They will never "Get over it". They may "Move on" but their lives have been permanently and indelibly altered by the death of their child and brother. There is nothing in their lives, no event, no emotion that is not filtered through their loss. Consider that the actions they have taken, from siezing his Heisman trophy, to publishing his book, to appearing in the media are not attempts to enrich themselves or to punish OJ but are attempts to do what they can to make sense of the terrible hole left in their lives when Ron Goldman was killed.
I dont know why old man Goldman doesnt just kill OJ...its what I would have done if he killed my son....
OJ was not proven innocent. I watched every minute of the trial and I can say from what I saw, he's GUILTY. Why shouldn't the Goldman's benefit from this admission of guilt from the man who killed their son and got away with it. They've hounded him everyday since the trial. I would do the same if it were my child that was killed. They won a large settlement and haven't received a penny from the killer. I'll buy the book and read how he killed them. The jury didn't care about guilt or innocence, they just wanted to send a message to the LAPD. Plain and simple.
How sad it is to watch this continue.   I have lost a loved one through violence.  Can I bring them back, no.  Am I still alive? Yes.  I have learned that when you hate a person so much, they control your life.  I refuse to let that happen. It is unfortunate the suffering all families involved have gone through.  At this point it is not about guilt or innocence.  It is about living and making a difference in life.  The press needs to stop putting OJ everywhere they can. You keep him popular by following him with a calendar.  Mr Goldman, your son is gone, you can't change that.  You need to move on, find something different to do.  Mr Simpson owns you and your family until you do.  There is a life after the loss of a family member.  Start living again.
All of you people have no idea what it can possibly feel like to have a loved one literally ripped from your life while the murderer sits back and writes a book about it and scoffs at the cameras at every chance.  How can anyone feel ANYTHING but empathy for the families of the victims?  Money?  Whatever.  If you really think that the Goldman's are doing it for the money, you need to think about what it would feel like if your brother, son, nephew, father or even a distant relative, (neverhteless, a decent and law abiding young man),  was ripped to shreds by a man who was upset that his wife did not want him anymore.  Plain and simple, I would do the same exact thing if I were Fred Goldman.
The Goldman's need to move on -- I too have lost a son, but in the insane war this country is in.  You can't carry that kind of hatred around -- it eats you alive.
Couple of things... OJ was acquitted.  The law thus says he is not a murderer.  period.  If  you don't like that, move out of the country.  OJ must abide by the civil court ruling and pay the punitive damages as that court found him liable for the untimely death of Nicole and Ron.

That being said, the Goldman's speak about Ron wanting them to find peace.  Then go and do that.  Quit claiming that OJ is a murderer.  I'm surprised there hasn't been some kind of harrassment or slander suit filed against them.  Get over yourselves.  Drop it.  OJ is going to rot in jail anyway.  Karma is beautiful even if you aren't a murderer.
You poor, misguided, and delusional people that think the Goldmans should just get over this and move on, and that it's just about the money, and that they're leeches, are beyond belief. You are the same people that turned patriotic after 9/11 and now demean our government for going after the terroists. To even believe one iota that Simpson did not commit this murder is pure stupidity.  I could see through the defense attorneys diversions and smoke screens from day one of the trial.  I commend the Goldmans for doing what they are doing and encourage them to do more, WAY more!  They are better people than I because I would shadow Simpson every last footstep he placed on this earth. I WILL buy the book for myself and for gifts for others just to make a point.
What a shame from Fred Goldman! Well, his last name say it ( Gold - Man )
I watch part of the goldmans on dr phil I was sick to my stomach that the fact is they can't change nothing and, that while there trying to get oj the devil is cheating him and his daughter out of life god said revenge is mine said the lord people is allowing this behavior on national tv is really upsetting to me to me. I can understand their pain but enough is enough the jury spoke and you or Dr. phil can't change that and by the way that book don't tell me any thing, who is dr. phil to judge he's not god .goldman's just want money he has't spoke to his son in 10 or more years prior to his death what is the real motive behind chasing oj simpson you tell me
The Goldmans are proving themselves to be money-grubbing  low lifes.  How could they tolerate the publishing of that book under any circumstances, let alone advocate for its publishing and accepting proceeds from the sales.  They are contemptible scum.  Money money money; they probably aren't that sad Ron was killed - the money sure does ease their "pain".
Take a good look at a photo of Ron Goldman then try to imagine him some 10 plus years later. So Sad
I was led to believe both goldman and mrs. simpson
were in pact to a dual suiside, if O.J. would not give
in to leave them both alone.. to pursue a happier union without the interferance of O.J..
This never came out in the trial nor was it investi-
gated by the press or police. Was ron goldman and mrs.
simpson suisidal?  Why, then would california liberal
courts try a civial suit when a federal court set mr. Simpson free.  The viability of the two arranged their
death so Mr. Simpson, would be blamed..
I know it has been a long time for the goldmans but
in truth, they may not be entitled to anything and in
fact owe Mr. Simpson!
what bothers me is not the fact that they are doing anything with the book...theres a lot of death and violence in history books we teach our kids with. that would hyprocritical....the Goldmans didn't ask oj to write it.  And they don't need Nicoles families permission to lead their lives as they see fit.  Yes they should receive some kind of compensation he IS writing about THEIR loved ones. He owes them by a COURT order. i think the fact that oj trying to have the book destroyed or hoping it would come back to him exclusively.... speaks volumns in itself to his guilt and i think its great karma turned it around and bit him on the arse with it.

its the expectation of those who have no idea what's it like to lose a loved by murder saying they should move on...that amazes me. Look, if you're sick of hearing about it, turn down volume or change the channel.  take some responsiblity in what you watch, listen or read... but don't put the  blame that on families who lost a loved one that way...What has happened to TOLERANCE AND COMPASSION for others in America?  If Ron and Nicole had been LITTLE CHILDREN murdered like that...please tell me... would those of you who say "move on i am sick of hearing about it"..feel the same way?  Would the monetary issue be looked at as greed?

Do any of you know how much it costs to and how much time is taken out of your life to have the counseling required to "get on with your life" ?  Or how hard it actually is to do so?

Both families need support, tolerance and compassion
I can't imagine the deep pain that the Goldmans have gone through losing their son in this way. This truly is NOT about the money for them. No amount of money would ever heal their deep loss. There were mountains of evidence against OJ and his preferential treatment, such as a change of venue, and his slick attorneys made a mockery of our justice system. This book finally gives them the power to reveal the truth.
Goldman's name say it all.  A pot of free Gold in life.  The American public are not fooled by money hungry famlies like these people.
Not once do you hear the Goldmans talk about missing the good times that they had with Ron, but they sure talk about the money and getting OJ back for what?  He was proven innocent?  And as you recall in the beginning they said that Mr. Goldman didn't have that close of a relationship and it sounds like he is trying to make up for the time he wasn't for the dad he wasn't.
Stop be so concern with OJ Simpson and money, and you can move on with your life and get some sleep. Pray and don't hold grudges, and you will see that life has a lot more meaning.
Of course, OJ did it.  He is still getting away with
whatever he does because he is charming when he is not
in his murderous rages.  He believes he can continue
to play his games with anyone who disagrees with him.
I have a hard time accepting selling a book that has
to be horrible and extremely sad but if it helps the
GOLDMANS at all, then it is up to them what they do
with the money.  I don't think it will buy them peace.
Only God will help them with that.  They do need to
focus on what is good in their lives, children, grand
children, friends, etc. otherwise they will become
ill and not be able to function at all.  I wish they
only blessings from this day forward.
LET IT GO ??? THIS FAMILY HAS BEEN THREW HELL IN BACK, IT 'S BAD ENOUGH TO DEAL WITH A LOSS OF A LOVED ONE,( I LOST MY BROTHER 2 YRS. AGO) BUT TO BE IN THE PUBLIC EYE GREIVING, BEING JUDGED ON EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO. LET THIS FAMILY DO WHATEVER IT IS, THAT THEY FEEL IS THE RIGHT WAY, TO KEEP RON'S MEMORY ALIVE, AND IF THAT MEANS MAKING SURE THAT THIS S.O.B NEVER STOPS HEARING THE GOLDMAN'S VOICE ON THE NEWS THEN SOOOO BE IT. P.S SAMMY FROM ANAHEIM, U R AN EMBARSSEMENT TO SOCIETY , I BET IF UR SON OR BROTHER WAS MURDER AND THE KILLER WALKED FREE U WOULDN'T BE SAYING THAT !!!! WHO IS ACTUALLY INNOCENT AND THEN RIGHTS A BOOK " HYPOTHETICALLY IF I DID IT "WHAT A #@*& JOKE !!!!
Absolutely nobody can understand what the Goldman's are going through unless you have gone through it yourself.  My brother was murdered as well, but unfortunately due to shoddy police work, it was  never solved. I was so obsessed with finding the truth on my own. I have a book written about it that I hope to publish called Tonight the Lion Sleeps. It's a sad and terrible thing to live it, so cut the Goldman's some slack.
I can't judge anyone, till i walk in their shoes.
Someday we will all know what really happened.

Nicole letter, says it all.
