More OJ Simpson: Q and A with the Goldmans

Posted: Friday, September 14, 2007 7:37 AM by Elizabeth Neumann

This morning we had Fred and Kim Goldman, Ron Goldman's father and sister, on the show to talk about O.J. Simpson's controversial book, "If I did It" which hits shelves today after a year of legal battles over its publication.  WATCH VIDEO

There are two large components to this controversy: the legal implications that led to the Goldman's getting the rights to the book and then publishing it, and the emotional and passionate fight that all sides involved have made over the the text.  I spoke with the Goldman's lawyer, Peter Haven, before the segment to hear about the legal situation, and followed up with Fred and Kim after their segment to ask a little more about their personal journey.

Q: Can you explain how the bankruptcy court's ruling on O.J.'s book meant it eventually had to be published?

Peter: When O.J. pushed his company into bankruptcy, which owned the rights to the book, he believed it would either be destroyed, or he would eventually get it back in his own hands.  What actually happened is that when the company declared bankruptcy, the book became an asset of the company, just like a house or a car or any other possession.  So the book had to be sold, and the bankruptcy court mandated the book be monetized.  That means it's going to be published one way or another; if a house is mandated to be sold in bankruptcy court a homeowner will buy it, and if a book is sold, a publisher will buy it.

Once we decided to publish it on our own terms, we had the opportunity to put a total turn on it - we took the word "If" in the title and made it tiny on the cover - so you really see, "I Did It."  We got to add a foreword giving our position.

Q: What about the fact that this book is...creepy, or disgusting, if it is true?

Peter: You know, this book is similar to a horror movie which is more terrifying when you don't see the monster.  Your imagination makes it much worse than it actually is.  The same is true of this book.  O.J. really believes he is the center of the universe - that's what you get from the book.  You are left with the impression that he is painting an inaccurate picture of Nicole, and that he is an idiot for confessing in this way.  He really thinks people will read this and say, "It's not really O.J.'s fault, anyone would have done that..."

Q: Do you sleep well at night?

Peter: I sleep very well at night.  The Goldmans have been victims without recourse for years, and as horrible as this book is, it is something he coveted that they took away from him.  It gave them power, and I believe it has transformed them.

Q: Kim, you have been fighting this man, O.J. Simpson, for over ten years.  You must think of him every day - how do you deal with that?

Kim: It's like having another appendage.  It becomes part of your existence.  Do I think of O.J. every day?  No.  I think of my brother every day, and the loss his death created in my life.

Fred: I think of Ron constantly.  I feel a natural warmth when I think of my son.  But after thinking of Ron, I immediately have the thought that he was murdered by a monster and my feelings turn to hate.  The two are sadly connected forever.

Q: How do you keep that hatred from taking over?  How are you able to be a parent, or a grandparent, and enjoy any part of life?

Kim: You make room for it.  We can't let him dictate our lives.  It just becomes so much a part of what we do - you have to find a way to compartmentalize.

Fred: I have a beautiful daughter, I have a beautiful grandson, I have a wife and stepkids and amazing friends.  If it was not for all of them, it would be a lot harder.  But I think Ron would want us to find peace.  It would do Ron a dishonor to let the hatred for that monster take over.

Kim: Ron suffered the most pain anyone could suffer when he was killed.  There's nothing I can feel that even comes close to that.  So there's really no other option, you have to make room for it.  People ask me all the time, 'How do you cope?' and I answer: I honestly don't know.  I just...

Fred: You just do.

Q: Peter, your lawyer, was telling me about the legal implications of the ruling in bankruptcy court.  What was that conversation like, when he sat you down and told you your options?

Kim:  It took more than one conversation, that's for sure.  When he told us that the book was going to end up published, we were kicking and screaming.  We were so torn about going down that road and we were worried about Nicole's family and the kids.  But as we kept uncovering information - the kids had signed off on it, O.J. would be getting the proceeds, we decided we needed to take something back.

Fred: The bottom line is that we got the rights through the court.  And the bankruptcy court required the book rights be monetized.  I made a promise to the judge that I would maximize the asset and have it monetized.

Kim: My father and I started a foundation - the Ron Goldman Foundation for Justice, and a portion of the proceeds will go to that.  Also, the children will receive a portion of the money as well, whereas when it was in O.J.'s hands they weren't seeing any of it.

Q: Do either of you sleep well at night?

Kim: I am a horrible sleeper.  I've had insomnia since my brother was killed.

Fred: I haven't slept well since Ron died.

This family needs to move on.  No one knows what happened for sure...therefore OJ's acquittal was appropriate.  By not letting this rest, it tells everyone that the Goldman's only care about $....very sad.

I feel sorry for the Goldmans.  But they seem to be obsessed with OJ Simpson.  He is certainly the "lowest form of humanity", however they need to get on with life.  They will never heal until they put all of this behind them.  They should take a lesson from the Amish in Pa who lost their children last year.  They have truly acted in forgiveness by helping the widow of their daughters killer.  They don't recognize the anniversary of their deaths publicy.  They mourn in their own simple way.  The Godmans seem to "lavish" in the publicity that they are always creating.  They need to let it go.  Many have...
The Goldmans should stop exploiting their dead son for money.  O.J.'s trial was filled with so much corruption that any reasonable person would have concluded that he was not guilty.  These people should not be allowed to continuously torment him.
I don't want to read ojs book.  he is a narcissist through and through.  he is getting the attention he is seeking to continue his lies through the book.  the book should be burned.  there are many people out there like oj and it is very scary when you come face to face with them.  oj won't stop with the book he will come alive.  just wait!!!
I completely agree with the previous comments.  It seems the Goldmans are exploiting the situation by brining the book to the table, using the court as the exuse. The Brown family is right by not wanting to have anything to do with this.
The Goldman's seem to forget that he was proven innocent, let it go. They seem to always pop up when their popularity is fading. What next a movie of the week, do they care about OJ's kids or are they monsters to. Take a page from Nicole's sister let it go.
I will not be reading OJ's book. But I feel that if the Goldman's want the book published, for what ever reasons that they have, then the public has no rights to say anything. If it was your child, brother that was murdered, well, nobody could ever feel what they must feel. The Brown's should not be involved and should respect the wishes of the Goldmans, since their son was an innocent bystander that got in OJ's way.
I agree it does seem the Goldman's are exploiting the book. I also agree with the Brown family that the book should not be published. I have a hard time accepting that some legal maneuver could not have prevented the printing of this horrid book. Does not seem the Goldman's have much feeling for the children of Nicole. But then money and mirrors block the vision. They should move on and allow Nicole's children to do the same.
I don't think the Goldmans are concerned about the "money"  one bit.  And for people to say the Goldmans are exploiting their dead son for the money, are very cold and cruel people.  They should walk a mile in their shoes -- and then see what they would do.  The Goldmans are doing it for the principle of the thing.  Simpson was ordered to pay the Goldmans by a civil court, and I believe that is exactly what he should do!
The Goldman's are not exploiting their son, I don't blame them for whatever they do, the killer deserves everything that is said about him, he killed Ron and Nicole and someday the creep is going to burn in hell, I hope he knows this but being that he thinks the world revolves around him, who knows. The KILLER will someday pay for this crime and the sooner the better.
The Goldmans have let OJ win, he rules their lives, they can't stop thinking about him and they have an obsession with being involved in everything he does, it's sick, they try to make it about justice, now it's just about them not wanting to let go of OJ, so now he rules their lives in everything they do. so sad
Fred Goldman needs to get on w/his life. How many times can you beat a dead horse? By Fred asking the american public to buy this book, he is asking us to pay OJ's judgment, that was levied on him. Also this book is no longer OJ's book when the Goldmans altered 2 chapters in the book, this book becomes their book not OJ's. Someone needs to tell Fred Goldman enough is enough,by his constant obsession w/OJ he comes off as a less symathetic victim. I know that all my friends are all saying when is this man going to get on w/life, we all can see that OJ certainly has. He needs to accept that he is not the only person in america that has lost a child to violence. This can't be good either for Fred's health. He can be doing so much good for others survivors of violence if he just lets go of his hatred for OJ.
I hope that every person in the US goes out and buys this book. I believe that both families involved deserve something for all their suffering. I know it's not from OJ's wallet but he will at least  suffer from the knowledge that he is not getting the money and the families are.
I don't know if it's so much the greed, but more the Goldman's anger and hatred for their son's killer that is killing them and the fact that O.J. got away with it.  Anger and hatred makes for very bad decision making.  They think they're getting even, but they are actually helping him throw the fact that he got away with it in their face and everyone else's through the very book they are publishing.  The money they will get will never outweigh the pain this will cause for the Brown's, but mostly, the innocent children who must carry this burden for life through no fault of their own.  They need to move on for their sakes and the sake of all affected.
What a bunch of money grubbing leeches, they are exploiting thier own son for money.  Is O.J. the criminal or the Goldmans and Brown's? If you think that they too are not a part of this money project you have another thing coming.  It is appalling that they would claim the moral high ground in accepting Money for Ron and Nicole's death.  How dare they do this...Shame on the Goldman's and Brown's.  someone out to send them to Iraq to learn what true families have to deal with in the loss of a loved one...
What is so funny about this entire situation is that at first the Goldman's put this put right up there with the devil's handbook and didn't want anything to do with it.  Now that it looks like they could make a few million from this book - well - $$$$ changes everything.  It's been years - they need to move on with their lives.  This book is not going to bring Ron and Nicole back and neither will the $$$$.
Before I watched the Oprah interview yesterday, I too thought the Goldman family needed to move on. Today I feel differently. OJ received a sizeable advance for the book when it was first published. That money and his NFL pension (millions of $ a year) will never be touched to pay the judgement from the civil case because he has his team of clever lawyers and lives in Florida (a state that protects pensions from lawsuits).  The Goldmans stand to collect a measly 17 cents per book sold. This isn't about the money, this is about keeping the money out of OJ's hands.  I for one, commend them! Who cares what they do with the money, they won the judgement and should collect it!
Very odd decision by the Goldman's in my opinion.  In the beginning when they first heard of this book they were "disgusted" by the idea of it.  Now, since they stand to receive the benefits of it, they are all for it??  Kind of hypocritcal in my estimation.  This book should never even have gotten off the ground in the first place, it sounds like complete rubbish.
All the comments that I have read state that the Goldman's should move on and get over it.  Well, how many of us have had a close family member murdered?  I would be so angry that the person who murdered my son or daughter was walking around free, getting the same star treatment as he did before the murders.  This book may be the only avenue that the Goldman's have to get back at OJ. To show him he can't control everything. We all know what he did but this book now shows that he knows what he did. What is the difference between the Peterson case and the OJ case?  The OJ case was made into a black and white issue.  I followed both the OJ and the Peterson cases and by far there was more evidence to convict OJ than Scott Peterson. Scott Peterson is guilty also.  Something troubling about the OJ trail that has always bothered me is him trying on the glove.  Well, leather gloves that are exposed to liquid, either blood or water will shrink.  That is why they did not fit his hand.  Marsha Clark and Chris Darden did do their job and did it very well. Nicole and OJ had a history, either good or bad and the Brown's had to of known of the abuse.  Ron Goldman on the other hand was honestly just at the wrong place at the wrong time. Tt is not for us to judge.  We do not walk in the Goldman's or the Brown's shoes.
Although I had nothing but sympathy for this family when this tragedy took place, that feeling has been slowly replaced by disgust. These people are vampires feeding off of the blood of their son and brother. Money is their motivation for publishing this book and I can't imagine wanting one dime in payment for the loss of a family member.  Their rationalization that they are keeping money from OJ doesn't ring true. If that was their motivation every penny would go to charity, not to line their pockets. What a sad tribute to Ron Goldman's memory.
Until anyone has walked in their shoes, they should not judge how and when to move on. Anyone that has lost a child, particularly by a violent crime, knows that you will never get over it and there is no time frame for moving on. Compassion for a breaved family goes along way.
Goldman is all about money - he is a sick person.  Someone needs to interview his ex-wife.  Leave OJ alone, he has suffered enough.
You people SO DON'T GET IT.  A court of law declared OJ civilly responsible for the two murders.  The only rememedy that the court is able to award in a civil trial is money.  IF OJ were all that innocent, he would have gotten off in civil court too.  I note none of you are from Southern California, where we know all too well that celebrity means you can kill your wife and get away with it.  I hope the Goldmans pursue every cent they can get from OJ, until he finally pays his debt.  Maybe they can get his jail wages if these burglary charges stick.
If the Goldmans were going to exploit their son for money they would not have waited 11 years. Any one of them could have written a book but have never done so. You cannot use the Amish Murders to compare because they do not have to deal with a killer that is laughing in their face and in the face of the justice system. Forget the criminal trial it has nothing to do with the Civil Trial where he was found responsibile for the deaths and ordered by a court of law to pay millions to the victims family. I don't blame the Goldmans for waiting as long as it takes to make him pay. It was made clear the book was going to be published by someone and all the Goldmans have done is to refuse to allow this killer to once again laugh in their face and turned the tables on him. From what I can see they have gotten on with their lives, after all you don't see them in the media until he pulls another one of his stunts. Who can blame them for continuing to fight for justice for Ron. Don't Judge until you lose a child or Brother by Murder.
I believe that the Goldman's are so obsessed with OJ that they will never be able to get on with their lives.  It is sort of understandable given what happend to their son and brother.  I also believe that they have turned this into a money game.  They are never going to destroy OJ.  I am certainly not sticking up for OJ but that is the way it is.  I can not believe that the Goldman's are allowing OJ and giving him the satisfaction of concuming their lives.  It is sad for everyone involved.
"I haven't slept well since Ron died."  Who's he think he's kidding?  This guy wants the cold hard cash!
I never comment on the web but I have to say this:

This book made me sick when I read an excerpt.  In my opinion OJ confessed through this book.  And to think that he would get paid for it is even worse.

Ron's family should get any money this book brings in but I won't buy it either way.  It's just sick.
The Goldmans need to build a bridge and get over it.  They are just greedy at this point and that is not a proper memory for their son or anyone.

Move on-- stop grubbing for money and headlines.
No one could possibly know what Fred and Kim Goldman have been going through these past 13 years. To see the killer of their son and brother get away with murder would eat anyone up. I applaud them for seeking any type of justice against this murderer.  Anyone that doubts that OJ Simpson is a killer is only fooling themselves. The evidence was there and a killer got away with murder. Plain and simple.  I will buy the book only because I know where the money is going and these people can have some sort of justice over a killer. They know it won't bring Ron back, but they took something away from Simpson that he values most: money.
The Goldman's are as bad as OJ - making money from their son's death.  I guess now Fred and OJ can go on a book tour together to make even more money from this terrible crime.  It's time for closure Fred.
The corruption spoken about in the previous e-mail is the American justic system and its inability to provide that justice. Letting OJ keep his house, his pension, etc. and then telling the Goldman's they can have millions of dollars is ridiculous. They have a dead son, 13 years of fighting and absolutely nothing to show for that fight. OJ has his life, healthy children and lawyers who seem to know how to protect him. He has had no consequences of any import.  If the civil suit had been properly administered, perhaps the Goldman's could put this away. There are no winners here. Money seems to be the only thing OJ understands - better the money go to the Goldmans than into OJ's pocket to feed his already over-inflated ego.
The Goldman family say the had to monetize the book they could have done that and deystroyed. The fact that value is added to the book dose mean it needed to be published. This makes them no different than the man they accuse they are plain and simple people seeking limelight and most importantly money!
The Goldmans get paid for a man who slept with another mans wife.  is O.J innocent? I don't think so.  However the should not get a dime for his moral choice to endanger himself this way.  The irony of this is that if a woman had killed her husband and lover under similar circumstances, she would be a hero.  Bottom line no one should profit from someone's death.  No matter how you paint him Goldman's no saint.
To the people who proclaim the Goldmans need to "move on," and "put it behind them," I wonder, have you ever lost anyone to a brutal murder?  How about a widely publicized murder?  Do you have to suffer the pain of seeing your loved one's butchered body in magazines and on the internet?  I'm incensed at these comments and feel deeply for the Goldmans.

Anyone who has lost someone close knows there is no such thing as "getting over it."  The Goldmans HAVE moved on.  They move on, but their permanent loss will always be a part of their lives.  They are making an effort to seek justice, but clearly the Goldmans' explanations fall on deaf ears.

My heart goes out to you, family and friends of Ron Goldman.  I applaud your efforts to seek justice any way possible, not just in Ron's honor and memory, but in the honor and memory of all victims of violent crimes.
I think the Goldmans should let it go.  All their son is worth to them now is getting a huge sum of money.  Very sad...
"Money Makes the world go around".  That's the bottom line.  The Goldman's know that they are supposed to be rich, and they are not.  That's the way it is.  It is all about the dollars at this point.
OJ continues to circumvent the court ruling in the wongful death award and the Goldman's have every right to pursue him in every legal way.

It's good to see OJ doesn't completely get away with more than he already has.

The Brown family should realize that anyone who reads the book and believes OJ's disparaging words regarding Nicole are the same people who believe him to be innocent of killing her.
I totally disagree - The Goldmans want to hurt OJ where it hurts - his wallet - because he got away with murdering their son/brother.  I intend to buy the book if it benefits them.
I feel sorry for the Brown and the Goldman families. Honestly, I don't know how I would handle it if my sister-son were murdered. I'm torn about whether OJ did it- but, my gut says yes he did it!! I agree with Denise, I don't think the Goldman's should have went back on their word...and published this book. I wouldn't read it. I'm not interested....
In America money seems to make it ok! I don't get it, I agree with Denise Brown. I could never spend money gained from my dead child, I don't car what the circumstance. It does appear that although the Goldmans claim it's not about money, it really seems to be....shame on them! Ron must be looking down and saying I hope I was worth it to you! Just shameful. Here's a thought, not about the money....then donate it 'ALL' to causes that would help others learn from this, not a portion, but 'ALL' of it, then America may see why you are taking blood money for your son, and the children of Nicole!
OJ was found not guilty. Why can't America accept that and let him move on?  It funny how we loved him to when he was playing football and now hate him for a crime evidence shows he didn't do.  I think this whole book thing was pretty smart of OJ if it helps to pay off that bogus debt he "owes" the Goldmans.
I cannot believe what I have read.  Can you people not see the pain that the Goldmans are in?  They are trying hard to keep Ronald's memory alive.  If someone killed my child like that and did not go to prison - I would make his life a living hell here on earth!

I hope the Goldman's continue on!

"OJ - Innocent??????" "You're kidding,right?

M
No one deserves to die like Nicole and Ron did.  Our judicial system failed the Goldmans and the Browns.
If Fred and Kim Goldman had a choice I am sure they would rather have Ron than the money.  Killer Simpson will never pay for his crime in jail so hit him where it hurts in his pockets.  Another thought - If he truly were innocent - wouldn't he have hailed Ron Goldman as a "hero" trying to save the life of his childrens mother.  Instead from the beginning he trashed everything about a man he probably never even met.  May he burn in h--l.
My understanding is that a 'Universal' outcry resulted over the publishing of this book by OJ. The thought that two murdered people's lives and deaths would be put in print by the murderer was disgusting to say the least. My understanding is that OJ profitted from the book by being paid $680,000.00 in conference fees. I don't understand why the Goldman's and Brown's did not receive that money?
I try to understand why the Goldman's have decided to publish this book at this time,or any time and no matter how I look at it, it is all about revenge and money. While I believe that it is true that they should do what they want with the book, I pray that some day they get closure on this painful part of their lives. At the same time, I believe that the only people that will buy the book are the same people that would have bought the book if OJ had it published.
OJ, if guilty, will have his judgement day by the biggest judge of them all. Meanwhile, I find it hard to believe that he is not being punished on this earth. I mean..really..would you ever talk to him or be alone with him?
As wrong as it seems, I do agree with the Goldmans. Like their lawyer said in the blog: "They have taken something OJ coveted away from him". Victims of brutal crimes are often left with a sense of powerlessness that is impossible to get over. I can crealy see why publishing this book themselves and been able to hold this money away from OJ's murderous hands is very empowering to the Goldman family. They finally feel like they have the upper hand, even if the circumstances are less than ideal. It is not their fault the system has protected OJ all these years. I mean, just put yourselves in their shoes. I don't know how they have managed to keep living their lives after, not only the actual tragedy, but seeing this man walk free, smiling. Smiling every day, on every media. They are hitting OJ where it hurts. I will not be buying the book, I do not wish to read OJ's words but I do hope it is a best seller for the Goldmans sake. It is a victory for them. I wish the Goldmans peace. It is not the best situation, but they did manage to make something out of nothing. Ron would be proud.
I feel terribly sorry for the Goldmans-always have.  I must commend them in their continued efforts to thwart OJ Simpson and to try to obtain some sort of justice.  Simpson continues to live in the spotlight, on TV, magazines; continues to roam around free and live his life.  These poor people are left to deal with this tragedy every day of their lives.  More power to them to deal with it in whatever way they can.  It's very easy for everyone to say they should get on with their lives-walk in their shoes for even one day and imagine their tremendous loss.
I will not read the book, the man has nothing to say that would be of interest to me.  I wonder if anyone has considered the fact that every penny we spend on this book is going to help OJ pay off his debt to the Goldman and Brown families.  I work to hard for my money to help pay the debt of a man like Mr. Simpson
Thank goodness that O.J. has his pension protected from these money hungry vultures.   The man was rightfully found innocent, so why should he suffer.  The Goldmans can waste the rest of their life going after him, but O.J. is obviously still enjoying life.  He has plenty of money and is smart enough to know how to keep out of these people's hands.  God Bless O.J. Simpson, still an American Hero.
OJ is nothing more than a killer that got away with it, he continues to hire and pay lawyers, so there is no doubt he has money, which was already awarded to the victims familys. If the trial would have been held in any other part of the country it would have been about the murders and not the off the wall defense reasons why he could't have done it. Simple fact in California if you are a public figure, you can get away with murder...no one has been convicted yet.
