Going from size 24 to 2 was 'easy'

Mandy Muniz is chronicalling her weight loss journey as part of TODAY's Fit Club.

Yesterday she wrote about hitting rock bottom when she realized she was 5'5'', 298.6 pounds.  She decided it was time to change her life...

I felt awful and ashamed, and knew I had to do something.   I looked at the card for the gastric bypass clinic, but I just couldn’t think of trying the surgery without fully committing to a diet and exercise plan first.  I had seen ads for L.A. Weight loss on TV and knew that the program involved real food so I decided to try it.  I was almost crying as I steadied my defense mechanism in order to call L.A. Weight loss.   At 293.8 pounds, talking about my weight was difficult and I remember uncomfortably laughing when the woman at the Bandera Center asked me how much weight I wanted to lose.   I was pretty sure she was going to say, “You’re too heavy, you need to see a doctor about surgery.”  Getting ready for her response, I chuckled and said 100 pounds.  I was taken aback by her response : “Ok, come on in and let’s get started.”

The first week I couldn’t believe the energy I felt, and the ease at which I took to the program.  I was eating more food than before and watching the weight come off quickly.  People noticed right away that my attitude was more positive, and I found myself eager to try new things that contributed to an active lifestyle.  I started walking, riding a stationary bike and even jogging around campus to run errands between my classes.  It quickly became apparent to me that my lifestyle was adjusting.  I started to love the smell and look of fresh fruits and vegetables, and I started to really be turned off by the look and smell of the fatty fast foods I used to eat with frequency.  I learned to make healthy meals quickly and with my new energy, I was getting chores done quickly and without the usual sluggish dread that used to accompany the idea of cleaning house or doing laundry.

I used to come home from work before the weight loss and just crash.  I would pick up something to eat for my husband and myself on the way home and plop in front of the TV completely exhausted. A typical day would start with me skipping breakfast entirely or on the weekends eating a bean and cheese and potato, egg, and cheese breakfast taco with two large glasses of orange juice and six slices of bacon.  By mid morning, I would have consumed two Cokes and a Snickers bar or bag of M&Ms. For lunch, I would grab fast food like a super sized quarter-pounder with fries and a large shake or hit a Chinese buffet for three or four platefuls of food like fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, fried shrimp and dumplings.  For dessert, I would have five almond cookies, a large soft-serve ice cream and, of course, my fortune cookie.  I would go to bed at 10:00 but would fight the alarm clock in the morning because I had no desire to get out of bed.

As soon as I started the program, I had energy at night to fix dinner, complete tasks, spend some quality time away from the TV with my husband, and, most amazing of all, I was getting up before my alarm went off with energy.  I hit 100 pounds lost with ease and chose to adjust my goal to lose the rest of the weight I had carried all my life. I reached my goal of 140, and currently through maintenance I weigh 126.6.

Frankly, I am amazed at how easy this transformation has been.  I started the program 4/22/05 and reached my overall goal on 8/4/06. I have also lost a total of 71.25 inches over my entire body.  My thighs no longer rub together; for the first time in my life, they don’t even touch!  In a little over a year, I have taken my body from the worst condition it has ever been in at almost 300 pounds and I have transformed it into the best shape I have ever been in.  I am smaller than I was in high school going, from a 24 to a size 2-4.

Check back tomorrow to find out how Mandy's life has changed since losing the weight.

what program did you do to loose aLL THAT WEIGHT?
I congradulate Mandy!  I don't know why she says it was easy, because I am currently going through the change of diet and exercise too, and I've lost 14.5 pounds since March of 2007.  It does take time, but it is well worth it, because you don't just lose the weight, you start a healthier way to eat and live and then you don't have to TRY to lose weight, you just live and maintain the weight you are at.  Keep up the good work Mandy and to everyone else out there looking for that lose weight fast pill, it doesn't work like that.  Follow Mandy's example.  God bless you all.
Congratulations on taking the first step.  You look wonderful and you have inspired me to get back on the plan that has worked for me in the past.  I had been feeling convicted by my husband's commitment to walking an hour on the treadmill 5x per week.  Then, one day last week I wanted to demonstrate a cartwheel for my ever curious grandson and realized that might result in a visit to the doctor.  Thanks for your story.
That is great!  Good for you Mandy!  Keep up the good work. I currently weigh 220 lbs and would love to get down to 130. My only concern is after losing so much weight that I will have lots of left over skin and it will look gross. I'm wondering if anyone else has had that problem. I see alot of ads where people lost the weight and they look good but then I wonder if they had to have surgery to remove the excess hanging skin. I've lost 14 lbs already and hope to reach my goal by the end of next summer. Thanks for being an inspiration.

Congratulations!

Are you really saying that you never had a moment when it was difficult, that you never "feel off the wagon" for even one day? If you did, how did you get back on track?

Did you have any issues with lose skin after you lost that much weight?  Did you need to have surgery to get rid of it?
I am truly inspired by this story. I have been fighting a weight problem my entire life as well. In fact, I just hit the same weight as Mandy Muniz. Thanks so much for sharing your story and providing proof that it can be done without surgery. Like many other people who posted I am also very curious about tightening your skin up after such an enormous weight loss. Please let us all know what you did and how we can follow in your footsteps. I hope that I too will be a success story a year and a half from now.
Hi. I just wanted to say congrats and that you look great!!!  I am a 38 year old mother of 5 who has just learned that my cholesterol is at 299!!!!  I'm just beginning my journey on the weight loss trail, and I hope and pray that I can do as well as you have done.  It will be tough because I'm a hard core southern cook!!!!  For my kids, my husband and myself, I'm going to do it.  Thank you for your wonderful story and your inspiration. God Bless.

I read about your story in a magazine.  I thought it sounded balanced and easy to follow.  I too have about 100 pounds to lose and have lost 26 pounds in the past month. I feel great and am looking to your blog for inspiration.  I am also curious about extra skin and what you have done.  I also would love to see some other sample menus.  I look forward to reading more tomorrow.
I just looked up LA Weight Loss and am thinking of joining. If she can do it so can I.  I wish they would profile men as well.  I'm a guy who is 340 give or take, I never know for sure and I would love to see my after pic after having the type of success that Mandy has had.  The only thing I would say that was not said is that you need to be really determined to do this. Wow Mandy! Good for you girl.
Mandy,

I have heard other people sayt they ate more food and lost weight. Please, whoever is in control of the content Mandy is writing, stop the teasing. We all want to know specifics. How did you do it Mandy, specifically.  What foods did you eat. I am a picky eater. I don't like most veggies. I need to lose 60 lbs. I want to know what to do...please can you be specific?
Seeking more infomation on this club...
I only need to lose about 30 pounds but at 5'2 that 30 pounds is alot! You're story is an inspiration to me. thank you for sharing!
Congratulations Mandy!  How I wish I could accomplish a weight loss of 30 pounds! (smile)  I am about 5'3" and I weighed myself last week and I am a wopping 223lbs!  I keep visiting WeightWatchers.com trying to decide if I want to join.  I missed Mandy on the Today Show, but I really need some admiration.
I am so happy for you! I don't know how you did it in a year. Keep the weight down and go shopping!
Please share with us how it is that Mandy seems so fit and tight with no loose skin.  Thank you.  She looks beautiful and is a true inspiration!
Did you remain on the LA plan the entire time?
That's awesome!!  Keep it up.  I do have one question for you, though.  Did you have to have any surgery for the loose skin after losing that much weight? Or does it naturally tighten?  Thanks.  You have inspired me to start exercising again and to continue eating healthy.  Thanks.
Is there any more detail available on Mandy Muniz and her weight loss plan?
Sounds like a good idea to me. Last night we were watching "The Biggest Loser" and my 3 year old daughter said "Hey mommy she looks just like you". She was referring to the mother of three with the elevated liver enzymes. I was floored.
I think it's wrong to title anything that has to do with losing weight as "EASY", I think no matter what you do to lose the weight, it's just not easy.  There is so much going on physically and mentally.  It just discounts the effort.  I've lost 32 pounds in the last 4 months and I think it was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life!

No one else thinks losing weight is work?  Maintaing a healthy weight can't be a breeze either!  How about when you add exercise to the mix?  Was it really easy?
