How I lost over 170 pounds in a year

My name is Mandy Muniz and I am 32 years old.  This is the story of how I went from almost 300 pounds to 126 in just over a year.

Growing up, a great deal of family time was spent enjoying food.  Saturday mornings were started with Dad’s homemade waffles with plenty of yummy butter and syrup or cream-filled and glazed donuts hot from the store.  We often celebrated successes with food, such as hot fudge sundaes for good grades.  As a family we did not eat fast food often but enjoyed the luxury of eating out at restaurants and getting appetizers and desserts with our entrees.  I have always associated food with family, feeling good, socializing and comfort.  I have seen food as a reward and a luxury to be enjoyed.

I have struggled with my weight most of my life but as I turned 25, I began to see my weight increase dramatically each year.  I made excuses for the gains by saying that my focus on my career as a High School drama teacher was stressful and didn’t allow me time to eat right or exercise.  When I got married I used the excuse of “newly wed and happy” as a reason for the weight gain.

My reality check came over a period of two years where my doctor, friends, family and even an assistant principal at my school pulled me aside to tell me how concerned they were about my health.  Several of my co-workers had managed their weight through gastric bypass and had given me cards to their surgeons.  They all commented that I was a bright, vibrant personality who did my job with excellent results and they were just concerned that I wasn’t taking time for myself.   I was hurt by these interventions and refused to consider the issue.  I even stopped going to my doctor because I knew he was going to tell me I needed to lose weight or, even worse, that I had a health problem.  I chose to block it all out and just continue my lifestyle.

The weight, however, became increasingly hard to ignore.  Our campus has three floors and if I needed to go to a meeting upstairs, I would climb the stairs and then find a place to hide while I caught my breath.  I had painfully chaffed inner thighs from my thighs rubbing together when I walked.  I constantly felt stressed and exhausted and really uninterested in socializing, choosing to go home and sleep instead.  Still, I chose to believe that I did not have a problem.

One day I agreed to help a student with his independent film project.  He was thrilled to have me act in the movie, and I was excited about the project until he brought a rough cut of my scene to show me.  When the movie started to play, the shot came in on a woman’s arm.  I remember thinking, “Who’s fat arm is that?”  When the camera panned out, I was truly shocked to see that the arm was mine.  I knew I was buying bigger clothes but I had lost all vision of what I really looked like.  In that moment I had to come face to face with myself, not what I thought I looked like, but the real me: size 24, all 5 foot 5, 293.8 pounds.

Check back tomorrow to read about Mandy's weight-loss plan.

This is very encouraging. I am nearly 500 lbs. and almost without hope. I am self employed, uninsured, and on somedays; I feel like I am committing suicide in a very slow and public way. I am 44 yrs. old and beginning to think it may be too late to make a change. I cannot afford a gastric bypass, and I am not convinced it is the only safe way to lose weight for the morbidly obese. (What a wonderful term that is -- invented by a skinny person I am sure.) I am anxious to hear more about how she did it and what the Joy Fit Club is all about.
How can I find out more about this?  I tried doing an internet search, but didn't have any luck!

Thanks
Congratulations on your success!  I started a new lifestyle in July and have dropped from 350 to 309.  The first came off fast, but now I'm at a more sensible 3 - 4 pounds a week.  Weight loss is tougher now that I've reached menopause and have arthritis in my knees, but I was living a very poor quality of life at my heaviest.  Your story was an inspiration and I admire your success.
Mandy thank you for sharing your story.  I am 272 lbs and so want to loose the weight.  As most have tried many things and cant seem to get past the 30 lb mark.  I am interested in what you ate to loose the weight and how you handled the times when you wanted to eat.
you look fabulous by the way and are a true inspiration.
Of course reading you story is inspiring because I read what I am now and what I would like to be. My biggest problem is after a very bad ski accident I am happy to be able to just be walking. I have painfully become more active but don't have any inspiration to regular exercise and keep to it. I have tried aqua exercise but didn't have enough cardio exercise to lose the pounds. What do I do to get started?
What an inspirational story.  I have 50 pounds to loose and can't seem to get any modavation to do it.  You have changed that for me today.  Do to some health problems with my digestive system I could not have gastric bypass even if I wanted to.  I am even afraid to use diet pill.  Since I have a lot less to loose than you did, There is no reason why I cannot do it on my own.  You look wonderful.  Congratulations!
Great addition to the new hour of Today.  I'm looking forward to each new persons story.
I'm also a 32 year old teacher and I also gained so much weight through out the years. I recently joined WW and I hope to stick to it. You're an inspiration!!!
What a fantastic story Mandy has!  I, too, have experienced weight loss and found myself quite emotional watching her story this morning on the Today Show.  My highest weight was 225 pounds and I have lost 80# and maintained it for nearly 3 years now.  It completely changed my life and I am now proud to say that I am a certified personal trainer and love to encourage people to lead fit and healthy lives!  I'm 37 and a single mother of 2 boys, ages 9 and 12 . . . I have more energy now than I ever have!
I saw the show today, I live near San Antonio, Texas, Iam exactly 23 miles south on I35. And I have one thing to say about your story, you have always been a beautiful girl and all this weight loss is so awesome. Keep up the good work, I have to start losing weight too. My problems are more emtional, my marrage is on the rocks. Alot of things I feel have gone down hill. Anyway, the best of luck with your weight and with your marrage. But please remember to thank our Lord Jesus for also being there for you..

Hugs: Maria Garcia, Lytle, Texas
I am so happy for you.  You are such an inspiration to others, including me.  I have struggled with weight loss my entire life as well.  My family too has always celebrated every event in life with food.  We spend most of our family time centered around a meal, or an outing somewhere which involved eating somewhere great!  I kow the determination it takes, and am thrilled you have accomplished your goal, and are feeling better than ever.  Most importantly, you are healthly now from the insdie out.  God bless you and your family!
I need to lose weight so so bad for my health and me
Definitely a true inspiration.  I was actually watching your story this a.m. at the gym while I was on the treadmill.  You gave me the motivation I needed today and I even increased my speed and incline!!  I couldn't wait to get home and look up the story on the Today Show so that I could really take it all in.  I have about 35-40 lbs to lose and am definitely trying to do it the right and healthy way.  Thanks again, Mandy, for your courage and determination!  Kristen - North Carolina
Mandy I enjoyed your segment on the show and reading your blog.  You are an inspiration!!!  I am struggling with my weight and know I have to work harder to get in under control!  Thank you for sharing your story with all of us!
Mandy you look great.  I am sure it was hard to loose the weight but you stuck with the plane, and the results shows.
in high school I weighed 125 pounds.  my measurements were 35, 24, 36.  I am 5FT 5 IN.  I wore a size 12. yes, TWELVE.  Will somebody please tell me how 125 pounds is a size 2 or 4????  I dont understand it.  I am very tired of weight loss stories that claim to have such small sizes.  email me: dianemoniz@juno.com if you can explain this.
How do I find Mandy's Blog?  I am very desperate with my weight loss issues. I need to loose about 100 lbs, give or take. I have high blood pressure and I am on thyroid meds and working weight watchers for about 3 months now. Nothing seems to work. I have lost a grand total of 10 lbs. Oh, did I tell you I am over 50, so it might already be too late for me. I just read her story and I thought, we have some major stuff in common. It is a shot.  If you cannot share her blog info, I understand.  Thanks for the story, anyway.

Mandy, can you tell a little bit about your journey when your reached the 150 pound mark?  Your appearance is amazing for someone who lost so much.  Did you have a personal trainer?  What about cellulite - how did that change?  Great job!  Thanks for sharing your story.

I'm thrilled too death to hear that you guys are doing this!  So proud of Mandy.  I myself have been obese my whole life --- well, from 1st grade on.  All through I have small victories until now, nothing lasting.  I sat and cried through the whole thing I was so thrilled for Mandy and also I LOVED ALL the topics on the 4th hour of Today.  Thank you!
Impressive committment.  What diet program did you use?
Mandy, I was interested in what you did to lose
all that weight!
I have over 100 lbs. to lose. I have not always
had a weight problem. I have been overweight since
I started menopause, about 12 years ago.
I now have heart problems and high blood pressure.
I was so inspired by your story, only I didn't get
to hear what steps you took to get the weight off.
You look wonderful!
Hope to hear from you.
Caroline
Thank You for your story!  My husband was just diagnosed with Type II Diabetes and we started eating right and walking 30 minutes every day.  I told him it was a God send that he was diagnosed because I needed an excuse myself to start a weight loss plan.  I myself have considered Gastric Bypass, but couldn't bring myself to do it.  I have dieted all my life and will lose and gain.  I am heavier than I have every been in my life and disgusted!  I saw you this morning and said to myself if you could do it, then I could too!  I am 43 years old have 2 healthy children and I want them to be proud of their mom and dad!   You are truly an inspiration to me and others I am sure and I appreciate you sharing your story, it came to me at just the right time!
I was very interested in hearing what Mandy eats now that she is maintaining. However, the ladies all talked at once and you couldn't hear what either of them were saying. They told what she eats for breakfast and then they all wasted so much time talking at once and laughing that there was no time to get to the other meals. I think that was a disservice to not only Mandy but the viewers wanting to hear the rest of the report. I was very disappointed.
This is so weird that I would be home to watch the show this morning.  I am 41 yrs old and weigh approx 315 lbs.  I was in the process of getting ready to have the Lap band surgery when I got sick and had to have a hysterectomy ( 8 days ago.), so now i am at home thinking do i need to do the surgery or can I do this on my own.. You did it? This is so strange that I would see you on the show this morning and that you are from San Antonio, TX (me too!).. I have been overweight since I was a young teen, and like you Food was the circle of all.  I am so ready to get started and feel maybe I should really focus on doing it "on my own" since now they say I will feel much better after having my hysterectomy ( i would have period for 4 months at a time) ... So I am very excited to read tommorow about how you lost and if I can do it... Congrats on the weight loss!! I want to be where you are in 1 year!!..
Hi My name is Stephanie Soto and Mandy Muniz made a big impact on me this morning as I was watching her on TV.  I also live in San Antonio, Tx and struggle to lose weight.  I would love to know how I could possibly get in touch with her if all possible.  Thank you for your help.
did you diet before and what made the difference of success this time? did you at times eat things that were not healthy or on diet
Hello you look so good when I saw you on the show I was so happy for you, your smile told it all. I'm trying to lose weight myself. which has been a challenge seem like all my life.. I would like to know in details what did you do to look like you do.
what a great story! your story movitvates me even more not to give up. i've made excuses just like the rest of the blogs above. i too cut down on my portions and still have been feeling hungry, but the infomation given today about eating about 3 hours was a great idea. exercise is another issue with me. it's hard to get started. 1st step with me was just cutting back on my food portions. i am a type I diabetic with a insulin pump and my blood sugars are even better since started. i am a controlled diabetic however i don't want my health to spin out of control. so your story is so great-i can't wait to hear what you ate because time is another problem for me. how did you fix your food in a timely matter? keep up the great work and i'll keep watching.
I too was like mandy I was 1 pound under her.  I only got on a diet when I came home from walt disney world and seen my fat face in those pictures. I got on weight watchers and lost 85 pounds only to prevail to gain half of it back.  I would love to be able to lose that 43 pounds that I gained over the 8 months.  So go mandy go and keep it off, don't do like the rest of us have done.  Don't set back and let life pass you by and not do anything about it when you see the weight come back.  I wish you good luck and stick it out for yourself and not anyone else.
What diet program did you use?  This is so weird that I would be home to watch the show this morning.did you at times eat things that were not healthy or on diet.
I forget that people really can change.  I just am so used to not believing it.  I mean, for others maybe, but not me, so I just go on... I am 300 plus and have been for so long I just am so resigned to it - i just feel like I will die this way. Unless I go have surgery or get inspired for more than a day or a week.  I will log on tomorrow to see how you did it.
I have tried all kinds of diets to loose about 20 pounds and gain it back over a few.  I hate the feeling of deprivation because it can only last so long.

I found that making some kind of "emotional healing" is a good solution for lasting results.  I don't have the same intensity of craving as before.

mandy , i too watched you this morning and i too needed to lose over 150 lbs  i would like to know what your diet plan was like for a week or two  and how did your execise program go and what and how did you start the program  thank you
After 3 children I was 204 lbs. and unhappy. Through diet and exercise I lost 52 lbs. in 3 1/2 months and kept it off for over 18 months. I treated myself to a tummy tuck as a reward and was then horrified when 20 lbs. crept back on during the course of my divorce and a sprained ankle, but I am determined to lose it and more! Seeing Mandy's story has inspired me to keep working out and watching what I eat.  I would like to lose the 20 I gained and at least 20 more...I love how it feels to be healthy!!!
I saw Mandy's story this morning on The Today show,
and I can't wait to read more about her story and diet tomorrow online I'm 290 right now my highest being 315. I know that I can loose the weight its just sticking with it and following it as a life change...anyhow I know that I can do it your story is already helping me to improve my life hopefully I can make a change like Mandy has...
Mandy---you go girl!!! You look amazing.  My highest weight was 260 lbs!! I am now 190--I have muscular dystrophy and wear braces on my legs to help me to walk.  I walk on my treadmill--4 days a week, for 1 hour each day.  My goal is to get to 150 lbs.  You are a true inspiration and I look forward to reading just what you ate---and did you ever have a treat??
I am where you were with weight. You are where I want to be with weight. You are so inspiring, thank you for sharing that part of your life with us.
